GOT 10 MINUTES? JUMP ROPE
FIT PRODUCT
Not many exercises burn calories and sculpt shoulders, chest, arms, and legs like jumping rope. According to Scientific Daily, just 10 minutes of jumping rope is the equivalent of running an 8-minute mile. That’s not the only good news; Jumping rope, even just a few minutes a day, helps with bone density, balance, quickness, and hand-to-eye coordination. Research shows exercise that includes rhythm, coordination, and strategy is also better for your brain than exercise alone (like To restore from dull and dry to bright and strong, Raw Sugar’s ColdPress Sugar

Did you know that the Super Bowl is the second biggest calorie consumption day for Americans, coming in just behind Thanksgiving? Don’t sabotage your healthy resolutions for one game. Keep your eye on the ball with these six simple tweaks so you won’t fumble your results.
PICK 6 1. Grill or bake wings (#1 football food) and grill veggies. 2. Crunch on raw veggies instead of chips. 3. Make a heart-healthy dip like guacamole. 4. Make your hamburger, hot dog, or brat bun-less for fewer carbs. 5. Fill up before the party, so you are not starving when you arrive. 6. Hydrate with water. If beer is must (50 million cases consumed this weekend), try a lower-calorie, lower-carb beer like Michelob Ultra.
Cremant de Bourgogonine

A SK THE EXPER TS By Roberto D. Lachica, M.D.
HD Liposuction Less Invasive Procedure with Minimal Downtime Stubborn fat that doesn’t go away despite a healthy diet, consistent exercise, and weight loss can be frustrating. Many consider plastic surgery, such as liposuction, but feel apprehensive about “going under the knife” and facing significant downtime and discomfort. Body contouring after weight loss has been around for years, with liposuction bursting onto the scene during the early 1980s and gaining in popularity since. Today, this surgical technique is every bit as popular but has evolved with newer, more advanced procedures that heighten results and lessen the downside. Less invasive and innovative options are now available in the Memphis area. University Plastic Surgeons offers a full array of liposuction and body contouring techniques, from traditional suction-assisted (SAL) and ultrasound-assisted lipectomy (UAL) procedures to newer and less invasive techniques such as HD Liposuction. Consult a board-certified plastic surgeon to help choose which is right for you.
Liposuction produces fantastic results in properly selected patients, but
it needs to be performed by a qualified board-certified plastic surgeon who knows the technology, who can properly identify the best procedure for you, and, most importantly, who operates safely. An excellent plastic surgeon exhibits good judgment and knows the intricacies of different procedures that will produce the desired result. Liposuction is ideal for patients with persistent fat and tight skin. Those patients who desire fat removal but have loose or hanging skin are not candidates for liposuction alone but can get dramatic improvement from “excision” procedures (surgical removal). Examples include abdominoplasty (tummy tuck) and belt lipectomy (buttock lift).
Large-volume liposuction is traditionally performed in an operating
room facility under general anesthesia. Patients who have only small fat or skin pockets that persist despite diet and exercise alone may not need traditional liposuction. Instead, they may be ideal candidates for less invasive procedures like HD Liposuction.
HD Lipo is the latest method of liposuction, which is an in-office
procedure performed with local anesthesia or monitored sedation. It is a way to quickly and effectively perform liposuction with a high-frequency oscillating device that makes the procedure more comfortable and tolerable while the patient is fully awake or sedated.
The University Plastic Surgeons facility contains a dedicated HD Lipo Suite. Longer procedures may even be performed under sedation provided by an anesthesiologist. Patients can be comfortable without having to pay for a costly off-site operating room. The best part about HD Lipo is that recovery time is minimal. Near-normal activities can be performed the next day, exercise, and return to work the same week. Patients receive a compression garment to lessen any swelling and ensure proper healing. For patients looking to refine their figures to reveal the tone they have worked hard to achieve, HD Lipo may be an inexpensive and ideal solution. Remember that the first step in the process is choosing an experienced, board-certified plastic surgeon who can properly choose the treatment plan to fulfill your goals and perform the procedure safely. Roberto D. Lachica, M.D. is a Board-Certified plastic surgeon with 20 years experience in aesthetic surgery. He is a Memphis Magazine Top Plastic Surgeon and Castle Connolly Top Doctor. Eating Disorders
By Teri McCann, Ph.D., CEDS, Fairhaven Treatment Center for Eating Disorders
It’s Not About the Food Many people think of an eating disorder as a lifestyle decision or a diet “gone too far.” In reality, eating disorders are serious mental health conditions that can have serious, life-threatening implications if left untreated. Those individuals who have struggled with an eating disorder know too well that the “just eat” or “just stop eating” intervention is not helpful. They also know that it is not only about the food. An eating disorder is a complex and often chronic illness with medical, social, and emotional implications—and the underlying cause of the eating disorder lies well beyond the food relationship.
What is an eating disorder? The most common eating disorders are anorexia nervosa (extreme restriction of food intake), bulimia nervosa (obsessive purging or intentional vomiting of food), and binge eating disorder (uncontrollable eating of large amounts of food in a short time period). Conservative estimates suggest that approximately three percent of males (adolescent and adult males do have eating disorders) and six percent of females struggle with an eating disorder. Among adolescents, the prevalence is 14 percent among females and 6.5 percent among males.
What are the complications of an untreated eating disorder? Eating disorders often result in serious consequences for mental and physical health, work and school productivity, and relationships with family and friends. The mortality rate for people with eating disorders is the highest of all psychiatric illnesses and more than 12 times higher than that of people without eating disorders. Left untreated over long periods of time, anorexia and bulimia can result in heart failure, suicide, early-onset osteoporosis, amenorrhea, kidney failure, pancreatitis, and other serious issues. Binge eating disorder and compulsive overeating can lead to morbid obesity, Type II diabetes, heart disease, high blood pressure, and other illnesses.
What are some of the signs or symptoms of an eating disorder? Not every food-related behavior qualifies as an eating disorder. Stressrelated eating and infrequent bingeing—as well as an obsession with lifestyle diets—can often be a sign of “disordered eating.” Early interventions with disordered eating patterns can avoid the slippery slope of a full-blown eating disorder. Warning signs of an eating disorder can include: • Dramatic weight loss • Preoccupation with weight, food, calories, fat grams, and dieting • Refusal to eat certain foods or whole categories of foods (e.g., no carbohydrates or dairy products) • Anxiety about gaining weight or being “fat” • Denial of hunger and/or development of food rituals • Excessive and/or rigid exercise regimen
8
A useful screening tool used by healthcare providers is known as the S.C.O.F.F. questionnaire. While the S.C.O.F.F. screening tool is not a diagnostic tool, it is helpful in identifying those at risk for anorexia or bulimia and can identify the need to contact a treatment professional for a more detailed assessment.
S.C.O.F.F. questionnaire S – Do you make yourself Sick because you feel uncomfortably full? C – Do you worry you have lost Control over how much you eat? O – Have you recently lost Over 14 pounds in a threemonth period? F – Do you believe yourself to be Fat when others say you are too thin? F – Would you say Food dominates your life?
What types of treatment are there for an eating disorder? Recovering from an eating disorder is not a matter of simply choosing to eat healthily. Eating disorders are complex illnesses that affect perceptions of body image, as well as behaviors, and they are not easy to change. Treatment of these disorders works to change these thoughts and behaviors, but these changes do not happen immediately and take time. The Department of Health and Human Services recommends evidencebased treatment from a coordinated treatment team that specializes in eating disorders treatment. Treatment includes medical stabilization, nutritional rehabilitation, pharmacotherapy, and psychosocial treatment. Because of the unique needs and complexities of treatment for an eating disorder, ask your healthcare providers if they have expertise on treatment of eating disorders. In addition, look for treatment providers that are Certified Eating Disorder Specialists (CEDS) or Certified Eating Disorder Registered Dietitians (CEDRD). Seeking help for an eating disorder is often a difficult step to take. It is important to know that help is available and full recovery is possible. Dr. Teri McCann serves as the Founder and Clinical Director of Fairhaven Treatment Center for Eating Disorders in Cordova. McCann has specialized in the treatment of eating disorders, trauma, and attachment disorders for more than 30 years and earned her Certified Eating Disorder Specialist designation from the International Association of Eating Disorders Professionals (IAEDP) Foundation. Fairhaven has both a Residential and Outpatient Facility, offering residential, PHP, IOP, individual services and transitional living to older adolescent and adult females recovering from the depths of eating disorders and trauma. This certification allows McCann to offer patients the assurance and confidence that the highest standards of care will be provided throughout all stages of treatment.
EATING DISORDERS HIDE IN PLAIN SIGHT. Eating disorders are serious and can be life-threatening. The mortality rate for people with eating disorders is 12 times higher than for people without them. The U.S. Department of Health & Human Services recommends evidence-based treatment – including medical stabilization, nutritional rehabilitation, pharmacotherapy, and psychosocial therapy – from a coordinated team of eating disorders specialists. Regaining Your Balance Bio-Identical Hormone Replacement Therapy Hormone imbalance and deficiency is
something many struggle with, especially once they reach their 50s. Though seemingly small, this difference in overall health can have a significant impact on anyone in the midst of its symptoms and side effects. Hormone imbalance can occur in both men and women, but all women will inevitably face this change.
Menopause is a widely known condition that
occurs in every woman. Menopause is characterized by a decrease in both estrogen and progesterone levels in the female body, resulting in a myriad of symptoms and psychological changes such as depression, anxiety, mood swings, and memory loss. Women who go through menopause can start to feel like a completely different person or like they are losing a part of themselves—the femininity they have had their entire life. While not lifethreatening, menopause and its symptoms can be a staggering change. For years women have been desperate for a treatment. There are several options in the form of bio-identical hormone replacement therapy. Testing can determine hormone deficiencies in men and women. Some of the most important hormones in the body include estradiol, progesterone, and testosterone in women, and testosterone and estradiol in men. These hormones are produced by the ovaries/testes and the adrenal gland. Deficiencies in these hormones can happen during menopause or perimenopause, the transition period women go through before menopause, resulting in hot flashes, night sweats, insomnia, mood swings, brain fog, weight gain, and decreased libido. DHEA and pregnenalone are also produced in the adrenal gland and can negatively affect energy levels and memory, as well as mood and libido.
10
Simple blood work is all that is needed to check these hormone levels. There are a variety of bio-identical hormone replacement therapies available for supplementing all of these hormones. They may be compounded as creams, oral and sublingual tablets, or pellets, which are popular because they stabilize hormone levels and only have to be replaced every three to five months. This is the most common form of the hormone replacement therapy. These pellets, no bigger than a grain of rice, are inserted via a small and virtually painless incision. Hormones are slowly released based on cardiac output over the next three to five months in women and four to six months for men. This method is easy and painless, allowing the patient to live their life as they normally would, without being tied to a daily prescription regimen.
Men are no strangers to hormone imbalances,
though they are less commonly heard about. Men suffering from hormone imbalances can experience symptoms such as decreased sex drive, fatigue, weight gain, depression and anxiety, inability to maintain muscle mass, decreased sexual function, and more. Much like in women, these changes do serious damage to a person’s confidence and sense of comfort in themselves, which is no insignificant thing.
Seeking treatment could be right for you if gaining back a spring in your step, your confidence, and your excitement for life are crucial to you. If you have noticed a significant
change in your quality of life recently and are suffering from fatigue, moodiness, or changes in desires and memory, look at testing your hormone levels. This may be the chance for you to start the journey to regain balance in your life. Dr. John W. White, Jr. is the medical director at The Transformation Doctor in Collierville. He is double board-certified in Family Medicine and Obesity Medicine. He has also completed additional training in Age Management Medicine and has personally used hormone replacement therapy himself for over six years. COVER PROFILE
FIT LOVE
By Christin Yates Photo by Tindall Stephens
Julié Valencia: 24, Coach at Orangetheory Fitness and personal trainer
Lewis Edwards, II: 23, Fitness manager and Coach at Orangetheory Fitness
Zodiac signs: Julié–Capricorn, Lewis–Sagittarius HOW THEY MET: Their love story began in high school. Lewis attended Julié’s birthday party with a mutual friend, and the pair has been together since. Julié attended Bartlett High School and Lewis went to Arlington High School, but that didn’t stop them from being together. They recently became engaged over Christmas and plan to marry this month. THEIR FITNESS JOURNEY: Julié has been involved with martial arts since she was eight and eventually earned her black belt. “I like to ask people, ‘Have you met my little friend?’” Lewis says of his 4-foot-11 fiancé. “She may be small, but she’s very tough.” Lewis, 6-foot-3, was a standout football player in high school until he tore his ACL in senior year. He later walked on at the University of Memphis where they both attended college and graduated in May 2017. Both Lewis and Julié majored in Exercise Sport Science because of their love of fitness and helping other people lead healthier lives. About two years ago, a family friend approached Lewis about coaching at Orangetheory Fitness (OTF). After trying a few classes, he jumped at the opportunity. Julié was introduced to OTF soon after and became a coach as well. Both are also sponsored athletes for Nutrishop on Germantown Parkway. THEIR WORKOUTS: Both take classes at OTF three times per week weightlift at ATC Fitness. They also compete in NPC competitions, Lewis in physique and Julié in figure. “Our workouts vary depending on whether we’re prepping for a show or not,” says Julié. THEIR DIET: During competition prep, their diets are strict. They eat six or seven small, clean meals per day that usually consist of tilapia, salmon, and “tons” of vegetables. They always allow themselves one cheat meal per week during the 15-week prep season.
14
WHAT’S NEXT?: Julié is planning to go back to school for her second degree in nursing to combine her love of health and medicine with helping others. The couple is also planning to do another fitness show and is excited for their wedding. “We’re having our reception in the restaurant where we met, which will be really special,” says Julié. “I describe Lewis as my big old teddy bear. He’s a big guy and can look intimidating, but he’s really a goofball.”

Gwen Mrva: 36, Administrative Director at the Memphis Child Advocacy Center
Mark Mrva: 36, Consultant Zodiac signs: Gwen–Capricorn, Mark–Aries HOW THEY MET: Gwen and Mark met in the Bluff City in 2008 at Fielder Square pool. Gwen often hung out there with a girlfriend, and Mark was also a regular. Though they were familiar, it wasn’t until a mutual friend instigated a call between the two that they began talking, which led to dating and eventually marriage. Although, Mark disagrees, saying Gwen called him all on her own. THEIR WORKOUTS: Gwen is a former competitive gymnast, so fitness has always been a part of her life. In 2010, the couple decided to complete their first half marathon together. “I use the term ‘run’ loosely,” says Gwen. She’s since improved her pace and time and has run several other races and half marathons. Gwen continues to run as well as cross train with weights. Mark, on the other hand, grew up golfing. “I was golfing before golfers were known for being fit,” he says. For the past five years, he’s done
CrossFit and IronTribe classes. When asked if the couple ever works out together, Mark says, “We’ve attempted, but we differ in when we like to go to the gym.” Mark is an early riser, and Gwen prefers to go after work. THEIR DIET: Mark and Gwen are on their second round of Whole30, a strict elimination diet that consists of whole foods without any added sugar for 30 days. During their first Whole30 in 2017, Gwen became obsessed with a combination of thick cut bacon, Brussel sprouts, onions, bell pepper, and sweet potatoes. When not on Whole30, the couple tries to eat clean during the week, but Gwen says, “Who doesn’t love Little Italy pizza and Gus’s Fried Chicken?” Mark admits to consistently grabbing salads at Wild Beets. “Anytime I’m not prepared for lunch, which is more often than not, I find myself there. They have great options whether you’re doing Whole30 or not.” The couple’s next challenge is parenthood! They’re expecting their first child in 2018. “We are both hoping to keep up our regular healthy eating and fitness routines throughout the pregnancy.”
“If it weren’t for Mark, we would not eat dinner. I’m great at making breakfast and lunch, but Mark cooks most of our dinners, and I’m thankful for that.” — Gwen 15

Lisa Aven: 56, PLC Coach at Kate Bond Elementary
Bruce Aven: 60, Retail grocery manager Family: Two daughters and two son-in-laws, three grandchildren and a fourth on the way
Zodiac signs: Lisa–Gemini, Bruce–Leo HOW THEY MET: “He had a nice car,” says Lisa. Bruce jokes, “A Camaro will usually get them.” The couple met at the Bartlett Library where Lisa worked. They watched fireworks on their first date, igniting the spark in their relationship. They’ve been married for 35 years. THEIR WORKOUTS: Bruce has been a cyclist for as long as he can remember. Lisa got into fitness more recently. She decided to tackle a half marathon a few years ago, but arthritis pain kicked in around mile 6-7 and became too much to bear. Bruce convinced her to start biking instead. They started riding casually at All About Bikes’ Tuesday night family ride. Lisa enjoyed it and learned about the Bluff City Blues 100 Training Team, a 100-mile cycling ride. “I thought, ‘That’s like the marathon. I want to do that,’” says Lisa. Bruce and Lisa began training with Memphis Hightailers and finished the ride in October 2017. “It was honestly the hardest thing I’ve ever done, but I knew I couldn’t give up,” says Lisa. THEIR DIET: Training for a 100-mile ride challenged how they fueled their bodies. The night before a long ride, they ate a lot of pasta and protein and upped their water intake. Immediately before a ride, they ate peanut butter sandwiches. They fueled with protein bars and bananas during rides. The Hightailers had supplies and gear stops about every 15 miles on the training rides, which helped them stay on track with fueling. Now that the ride is over, they have continued to focus on healthy eating and drink more water. The pair continues to ride with Hightailers and will volunteer with the Bluff City Blues 100 Training Team this year. Lisa says, “I couldn’t have done it without encouragement from others.” “Memphis has come a long way making itself bike-able with access to the new Greenway and Greenline and all the streets with bike lanes,” says Bruce. “We wish we were younger to enjoy it more.”
This year’s Bluff City 100 will take place on Oct, 8.

Dennis Prewitt, Sr: 52, Inventory Coordinator at Wright Medical
Family: 7 children and 6 grandchildren Zodiac signs: Vivian–Sagittarius, Dennis-Taurus
HOW THEY MET: Dennis and Vivian both went to Fayette-Ware High School, but it wasn’t until their 20-year reunion in 2004 that the two connected and became a couple. At the time, Dennis was in the Army and got deployed. By the time he returned, the two decided to get married, and the rest is history. THEIR WORKOUTS: Dennis’s first race was The Navy 10 Nautical Miler in Millington in 2011, and he later completed the St. Jude marathon in December that year. There, Dennis saw someone wearing a 50 States Marathon Club jacket and bought into the idea. His started his quest in 2012 at the Atlanta Marathon. He completed all 50 states in November 2017. “My favorite race was in Fargo, North Dakota,” says Dennis. “I didn’t hit a double-digit mile the entire race.” He’s a cocaptain for the running group Black Men Run.
Vivian followed in Dennis’s footsteps and took up running in 2012. She started with the Black Girls Run Couch to 5K program. In 2016, she retired as a Black Girls Run ambassador. She completed her first half marathon in 2013 and has 28 states under her belt in her 50-state half marathon goal. Dennis ran her first full marathon with her in New Orleans, but she decided the half marathon is her thing. Vivian also leads a beginner women’s ride with the Memphis Hightailers and is a SHERO for Black Girls Do Bike, a national cycling group.
“For anyone who wants to take on the 50-state challenge, my advice is to take
THEIR DIET: After Dennis’s sibling passed away, the couple became even more conscious of their eating habits. “I’m trying to develop a vegetarian diet, which I’m going to try for a year,” Dennis says. The pair typically eats oatmeal, a banana, and a boiled egg for breakfast. For lunch, it’s veggie plates or salads. “I try to eat healthy dinners, but I also have to satisfy my sweet tooth,” says Dennis.

New Knees Replacement Technology For More Mobility
By Christin Yates Photo by Tindall Stephens
Gail Blayde, 61, is an active member of her
church and regularly visits local hospitals to comfort elderly or ill patients. Recently, she was forced to scale back on visits because of severe pain in her knees that made her dependent on a wheelchair. “Before I had knee pain, I was very active and also had a physically demanding job at FedEx,” says Gail. “The pain became so severe that my quality of life was impacted, and I had to rely on a walker and wheelchair to get around.” Now retired, Gail took a cruise in May 2016, but she was highly discouraged after she couldn’t enjoy the vacation or go on any excursions. She decided she needed to take steps to regain her mobility. She met with Dr. Peter Lindy of East Memphis Orthopedic Group. Dr. Lindy uses a relatively new technology for knee replacements called ConforMIS. Customized knee implants are sized and shaped to fit each patient’s unique anatomy for all stages of osteoarthritis of the knee. ConforMIS allows the surgeon to reverse the traditional approach to knee replacement. Rather than making the patient fit the implant, ConforMIS makes the implant fit the patient. The technique involves a CT scan of the patient which is then sent to a 3D printer. The printer develops a wax mold of the patient’s knee that is used to develop the metal components of the replacement knee. Doctors use custom instruments to place the custom piece in the patient.
20
“Theoretically, if the knee replacement fits the person better, they will feel better, and if they feel better, they will function in a more normal
manner,” says Dr. Lindy. “I like to think of it as a custom tailored suit versus a suit off the rack. ConforMIS makes for a better fit.” Gail had her first ConforMIS knee replacement in June 2017. Her recovery went so well that she had her other knee replaced just two months later. She is doing much better and is on the road to living a more active life again.
“I can now walk without a walker or wheelchair, and I don’t have the fear of falling anymore,” says Gail. She’s also back to visiting the ill and elderly and making an impact on the Memphis community. To learn more about ConforMIS knee implants, visit EastMemphisOrtho.com.

AHA 2017 LIFESTYLE CHANGE AWARD How one surgery turned Rachel Riley’s life around For the 13 years she worked at the FedEx Hub, 46-year-old Rachel Riley never worried about her fitness. Her job was physically demanding, and she regularly worked out during the day before her shift. All that changed when she transitioned to a position at the company’s corporate office, where her day became more sedentary.
“She has changed her eating habits and looks totally different,” Krista wrote in her nomination. “Except for her smile!” Rachel modified her diet to incorporate smaller meals throughout the day and snacks. In the two years since she made a commitment to get healthy, she lost 44 pounds and nearly 30 inches.
“I stopped going to the gym regularly and just started making excuses when I got to thinking about getting back into the swing of things,” she says.
“Before, I wouldn’t eat a snack because I wasn’t hungry, but then I would eat too much at mealtimes,” she says. “Now, I eat breakfast, and then two to three hours later, I need to have a snack.”
It wasn’t until she underwent surgery to repair a torn rotator cuff that Rachel made the decision to improve her health through regular physical activity and a healthy lifestyle.
In addition to the weight loss, Rachel also noticed a significant drop in her cholesterol. “Before I started working out, my doctor wanted to put me on cholesterol medication, but he agreed to give me a chance to lower it naturally. After about six months, I went back and my cholesterol had dropped 50 points.”
“I first started going to PT Squared for physical therapy following my surgery,” she says. “After my four months were over, I realized I didn’t want to lose the progress I had made with my therapy, so I signed up for six months of personal training.”
Rachel plans to continue her training and even hopes to add a few extra days to her workout routine.
Rachel began with the basics and was slowly able to increase her amount of cardio. “When I first started, I ran maybe five sets of stairs and was winded the whole time. Now, I can run 25 sets of stairs and actually talk at the same time.” Rachel’s dedication to fitness is what led Krista Robinson, owner and physical therapist at PT Squared, to nominate her for the American Heart Association’s Lifestyle Change Award, which she received in May of 2017.

A Heart to Encourage
By Susanna Lancaster Photo by Tindall Stephens At age 63, John Daniel is physically active every day of the week and makes wise food choices. To most, he is the perfect example of what it means to live healthily. Even doctors have told him that if it weren’t for his healthy habits, he would not be here. Twenty years ago, a virus severely damaged the muscles in John’s heart that left it only 60% functioning. In the hopes of getting his heart to stabilize, he went through over 30 different procedures. Still, at the age of 60, his heart started to fail. For the next year, John waited on the heart transplant list and lived with an LVAD, a left ventricular assist device implanted in the heart to help it pump blood. In September 2015, John received his new heart. Because he had taken such good care of himself he had a high chance of a successful transplant. He knows he’s alive today because of it. While it would have been easy to feel defeated, John stayed positive and relied on his wife, Leslie, their three sons, and his friends and coworkers at First Tennessee Bank to get through the challenging time. “When I was going through the transplant and living with the machine in me and being in a hospital for life, I realized you have to have a vision about what you want to be on the other end. You need to surrender to your faith and let friends help you.” During his heart transplant, John did his best to keep healthy. In the 60 days that he was in Baptist Hospital prior to the transplant, he worked out with weights—sometimes making the heart monitors go off. After such a huge surgery, doctors were concerned about his lowered immune systems. While John did get sick, he returned to work alarmingly fast after only four months of being in recovery. “I worked out the whole time I was in the hospital and they thought I was crazy,” John says. “I knew it was easy to get down, but I wanted to remember there was life after this. It’s okay and human to be low, but you need to focus on the future.” John continues to remain active. Before going to work every day, he wakes up at 4:45 am and works out at the Fogleman YMCA. He does weight circuits and walks on the treadmill for an hour. On the weekends, he enjoys walking and jogging along the river with Leslie near their home in Harbor Town. John reaches a minimum of 10,000 steps daily. John also realizes the importance of eating healthy. During the process of the heart transplant, he lost 30 pounds from his already lean frame. However, he worked his way back to his normal size. He lives on a hearthealthy diet, avoids too much sugar, and limits his fat intake. For John, surrounding himself with positive people is just as important as exercise and diet. His biggest supporter was his wife. “She lifted me up,” John says. Though Leslie was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2016, “She stayed positive and upbeat.” Together, they overcame John’s heart transplant as well as her cancer.
24
In June 2017, John and Leslie completed a 25-mile Ride for Life, and John is now a chair of the American Heart Association. “I want to give back to the fact that I survived,” John says, and he acts as a role model for others and wants to encourage them. “We promised that if we survived we would tell our story,” John admits. “It’s humbling. Now that I’m on the other end, I want to say ‘you can do it’ to someone else.”
“I worked out the whole time I was in the hospital and they thought I was crazy.”

COACH’S CORNER
A Good Race Season Starts With Aerobic Training By Rachel Randall Start building your base now for faster race times this Spring. Base-building is the first step towards peak performance. A good running season starts with a strong aerobic base. Base miles set the tone for the rest of training because it teaches the body to burn fat. As runners gradually increase the long run, they build aerobic strength, which pumps blood more efficiently leading to more power and speed. A strong aerobic base decreases the risk of injury later on by strengthening muscles and connective tissues. Together, this all prepares the runner for more strenuous training and racing later in the cycle. Ben Rosario, the head coach of Northern Arizona Elite, states, “Aerobic endurance is the key to everything else in running. You can’t get the most out of the hard repeats, hill workouts, and tempo runs until you’ve built the base to handle them.” Many runners find base-building to be their least favorite part of training, but the mental focus it takes to find enjoyment in long, slow runs will pay off on race day. A race takes extraordinary discipline and mental toughness, and if you’ve done it in training, you can be confident about reaching your race day goals. Building your base means long easy to moderate runs where your heart rate is 60% of your max heart rate. Your weekly mileage gradually builds in distance, including a long run. This doesn’t mean cutting out all speed work; it is okay to incorporate some strides and strength work, but
your major focus should be on building endurance at an easy pace. The pre-season or base-building period is the perfect time to add in some upper/lower body and core workouts. Building full-body muscular strength will help you maintain good running form and prolonged endurance throughout training.
Do you have questions about getting started or finding a plan to work for you? Stop in and talk to anyone on our staff. We’ll be happy to help!
26
As you start dreaming of race day, get out the door and log some long, slow miles for a while. Be disciplined by building the strength and endurance you need first, and then the speed will come when you need it most. Happy Running!

I just ran St. Jude for the fourth time and hit my own personal record, 4:23. I run every year as a hero. I usually try to run with Breakaway training group for it. I had always been a solo runner until I started training with my best friend Megan! Now I’m training for the Little Rock Marathon. This will be my sixth!
Even though I started running for the wrong reasons, I never thought it would be in my future. I started with one goal: lose as much weight as possible. I did not care if I died trying. I fell into a severe eating disorder and barely had enough energy to exercise. I went from a size 8 to barely fitting in a 00. I overcame that and learned that being healthy, not skinny, made me the fun, happy, and beautiful Jordan I am supposed to be.
2 Every time I run a marathon it feels like a new accomplishment, but I will say the first time I was able to do a full push up was one of my biggest successes.
7 I could eat Mexican food every day. Las Delicias is my favorite: tortilla soup with a side of rice and way too much chips and salsa. And no good Mexican dinner is complete without a margarita!
3 Staying fit gives me something to be proud of. It gives me the energy to be up and going all day and gives me a break from the long hours of studying.
8
4 I have three pairs of the Brooks Glycerin 15 in three different colors. They are the best! Can’t run without my Apple watch using the Strava app and my Bluetooth headphones. I’m usually in head to toe Lululemon (it’s an addiction).
28
5 If I could have dinner with anyone famous it would be Ellen DeGeneres. Do I even have to explain why? She’s Ellen.
“You are beautiful and STRONG and if you want ice cream, eat the dang ice cream.”
I’m obsessed with looking at the weather. I know way too much about weather, and if the tornado sirens are going off, I am 100% in the closet. Sunrise and sunset are the best. In college, I would wake up at 4:30 am to drive into the mountains and see the sunrise.

My bucket list includes biking with my wife Kathy across the USA in 2019, and we also want to hike the Grand Canyon from rim to rim.
There are so many formal and informal groups to run with in Memphis! I have met many awesome people through the sport. Joel Lyons, Bob Wilson, Tim Verner, and I regularly run together with other Pilgrims. The Germantown Thoroughbreds is a fantastic group for Sunday runs, and I appreciate the many Breakaway Runs offered throughout the year.
8 Thanks to Paul Sax and Barry Roberson, I was fortunate enough to have dinner with two running legends this fall, Bill Rogers and Dave Wottle. This would be hard to top, but the teacher in me would love to have dinner with Albert Einstein.
3 A favorite fitness accomplishment was setting a few local MRTC age group records this past fall in the Road Race Series.
9 Most people don’t know about my love of basketball. I spent every winter in Maine either playing or coaching for 40 consecutive years from 13 to 52. Kathy and our children were all excellent players!
4 I love the simplicity and flexibility of running. There is something primal about it that is hard to explain. I also enjoy the challenge and excitement of competition. Most of all, I appreciate the many friends and acquaintances I have met through the strong running community here in Memphis.
5 I am particularly excited to run the Boston Marathon this April with many Memphis and Maine friends, as well as my daughter Eileen, a first-time qualifier.

A Mediterranean Lifestyle Good for the Heart — and Soul By Blair Mize, MS, RDN, CSSD, LDN
American Heart Month is in February, a month not only dedicated to celebrating Valentine’s Day with loved ones but also raising awareness about and preventing heart disease, the leading cause of death for American men and women. The Mediterranean Diet has long been associated with lowering cholesterol levels, reducing inflammation, and decreasing heart and cardiovascular disease risk. Nutrition plays an important role in heart health, and when looking at traditional Mediterranean regions, it’s clear the lower stress lifestyle of those who lived in southern Italy, Greece, Spain, and Morocco 50+ years ago also heavily influenced the health of the culture. Though Valentine’s Day may have you dreaming of a trip to the Mediterranean, you can incorporate aspects of this way of life without even leaving your home!
Make it Mediterranean by… Adding Mediterranean flavors to your menu. Traditional foods and flavors of the Mediterranean include seafood, fruits, vegetables, beans, nuts, whole grains, olive oil, seeds, herbs, spices, eggs, and yogurt. Traditionally, Mediterranean meals are plant-based with accents of omega 3-rich fat sources such as fatty fish. They also contain plenty of vitamins, minerals, fiber, antioxidants, and phytochemicals. Even a traditional steak dinner can be made more Mediterranean by shifting the proportions of the plate to include more produce and a moderate amount of meat.
Shopping locally for seasonal ingredients. Visit local farmers’ markets and consider getting involved in Community Supported Agriculture (CSA). Purchase groceries from stores that buy from local farmers. Doing so supports the local economy, saves money, and presents a challenge to be creative and incorporate variety (more nutrients) into meals and snacks.
Making time for meals. For many, breakfast is inhaled in a rush on the run, and lunch is eaten with one hand while typing emails with the other. The traditional Mediterranean culture didn’t buy into the fast food, fast life approach. Meals were included in their daily schedules to promote savoring,
30
community, stress relief, and improved digestion. What’s the worst that could happen by consistently carving out mealtimes on your calendar?
Moving daily. Movement was a natural part of the traditional Mediterranean culture that didn’t require grueling hours in the gym; however, they still reaped the benefits of being active daily through lots of walking and some manual labor. If “exercise” has become a word that evokes a sense of dread, simply consider activities that would make moving more enjoyable like dancing, gardening, walking meetings, playing with the dog, or getting out on the Greenline. Just 20 minutes per day can significantly reduce the risk of heart disease!
Doing more of what matters to you. What is your passion? What would you do with more time to yourself? People living in traditional Mediterranean regions were known to prioritize fun, family, and friends. They cherished social interaction, family meals, time to relax and unwind, and adequate sleep. With stress being a major contributor to high blood pressure and heart disease, it’s time to stop romanticizing self-care and make it a reality. These practices of the Mediterranean culture were non-negotiable habits that led to better health and lower stress, which is good for the heart…and the soul!
Sample Mediterranean Menu Breakfast Eggs / Fruit / Whole Grain Toast with Avocado
Lunch Chicken Sandwich on Whole Grain Bread with Veggies & Pesto / Vegetable or Lentil Soup
Dinner Grilled Salmon / Brown Rice / Greek Salad
Snacks Raw Veggies or Pita with Hummus / Fruit & Greek Yogurt / Assorted Nuts

Smoked Oyster Bites: An Easy Aphrodisiac
By Andrea LeTard
Cold winter months feel like a time to ditch the diet and cuddle up on the couch with something fun to eat, but it’s important to keep yourself and your significant other on track with clean eating. Surprise your sweet this month with something out of the ordinary. This fancy yet surprisingly simple appetizer will woo your love. Don’t let the “canned oyster” part of it shock you. They’re absolutely delicious, and even non-oyster lovers can’t get enough of these little bites.
GROCERY LIST: q 2 0-25 fancy round crackers q 1 (8 oz) package fat-free cream cheese – room temperature q 1 (3 oz) can smoked oysters – drained and rinsed q H ot pepper jelly q F resh dill q F leur de Sel or Coarse Kosher Salt DIRECTIONS: Spread a generous amount of cream cheese on each cracker and top with a single smoked oyster. If you don’t have enough oysters for each cracker, cut larger ones in half. Spoon a dollop of hot pepper jelly over each oyster. Top each with a sprig of dill and a sprinkle of Fleur de Sel.
