A SK THE EXPER TS By Kimberly Freeman, MD

The Importance of Preventative Healthcare 1. Why is prevention important? The importance of preventive medicine cannot be overstated. Diabetes, hypertension, and heart disease are leading causes of disability and death in society. By diagnosing and treating such health conditions in their early stages, it can potentially avoid invasive and costly procedures in the future. Early diagnosis and prevention can enable people to lead longer, more functional lives.

2. What are the major risk factors leading to heart disease? The major risk factors for heart disease are smoking, family history of heart disease or stroke, diabetes, poor lipid profile (high LDL and low HDL), hypertension, advanced age, and obesity. Chronic inflammation from infection, autoimmune disease, or oxidative stress has also been linked to heart disease.

3. What is included in a preventive wellness exam?

5. I want to stay healthy, but I don’t want to have to take a lot of medications. Are there ways that I can stay healthy without taking prescription medication? Adopting a healthy lifestyle is one of the best medicines available. A healthy lifestyle includes daily exercise, good nutrition, and the pursuit of interests that enrich your life. By increasing your daily exercise and adopting a diet that consists of lean meats, vegetables, fruits, and whole grains and minimizes refined sugars and fried foods, you can improve your cardiovascular risk profile. Also, doctors are increasingly realizing the connection between mind, body, and spirit. Emotional stress can increase your body’s inflammatory responses and increase your risk for diabetes and heart disease. Addressing the emotional stressors in your life is an important first step in taking care of yourself. Talk to your doctor about your health concerns. The best regimen for your health is one that you and your doctor devise together and that focuses on your physical, mental, and spiritual wellness. Taking good care of yourself doesn’t have to mean taking a lot of medication.

A preventive wellness exam starts with a thorough medical history, including personal medical problems, family history, and social history (smoking, alcohol, habits, living situation). Secondly, the doctor will perform a complete physical exam that includes blood pressure, pulse, and assessment of body mass index along with an EKG and a chest X-ray. The doctor will also collect blood for your complete blood count, a comprehensive metabolic panel, hemoglobin A1c, lipid profile, thyroid hormone, and vitamin-D levels. Other tests may be appropriate for patients with specific risk factors, including bone density assessment, measurement of prostatespecific antigen, exercise treadmill test, and ankle brachial index.

4. If I believe that I am at greater risk for a particular health condition because of my personal and family history, are there additional tests that I can request to assess my risk? One optional screening test that can further evaluate the risk of stroke is a screening carotid artery ultrasound, which assesses for plaque buildup in the carotid arteries. The development of plaque in the carotid arteries a risk factor for stroke and can be mitigated by smoking cessation, cholesterol lowering, and blood pressure management. If diagnosed with plaque buildup in your carotid arteries, medication to lower cholesterol may be beneficial, even if your cholesterol levels are not alarmingly high. Patients with a long history of smoking are at increased risk for developing abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) and may benefit from a non-invasive screening ultrasound to evaluate for an abdominal aortic aneurysm. An early colonoscopy and mammogram are recommended for patients with first-degree relatives with colon cancer and breast cancer respectively. Finally, a body composition scan can measure percentage body fat and lean muscle mass and evaluate the distribution of fat within your body. This information is important because a high proportion of visceral abdominal fat has been linked to such health conditions as diabetes and heart disease.

How Lashara Wheeler Made Way for Ducklings Those who know 36-year-old Lashara Wheeler see her as a health-conscientious and upbeat person. Training under Kelvin Brown at Memphis’s I Am Fitness, she focuses on weight lifting and some kickboxing. You’ll find her there four days a week working out. To round out her health, she meal preps every Sunday to ensure she sticks to a healthy diet high in proteins and carbohydrates.

From the street, they could see two small ducklings were trapped inside the drain near the duck. Lashara and her friend got a police officer to open the drain, and Lashara immediately climbed down to save the ducklings. She discovered there were actually eight in total!

Lashara admits, “I used to have low self-esteem, but working out helped me physically and emotionally.”

The officers mistakenly thought the ducks were part of the infamous Peabody Hotel Ducks. “They weren’t,” Lashara recalls laughing, “but they entered the Peabody as if they were going home.” The Peabody quickly adopted the rescued duck family, and Lashara became the Honorary Duck Master for the day.

Her lifestyle changed suddenly when she was faced with the possibility of cervical cancer. “I had cancerous cells in my cervix that easily could have easily spread and got worse.” Lashara had surgery in May and says, “I kept an upbeat spirit and didn’t want to let this change me, although I did have to step away from working out for a little while.” Lashara’s life changed abruptly once more on Memorial Day when she met up with a friend. “We were walking, and I saw a duck on the side of the street. I didn’t think much about it until we passed the same spot two hours later and the duck was still there.”

8

“They were the softest, sweetest things to hold,” she remembers.

Her friend recorded the rescue so Lashara could show it to her three children. “I didn’t record it for the public but thought my kids would like it, especially my eight-year-old daughter who is autistic.” However, the story went viral. The Peabody Hotel treated Lashara like a celebrity, and people in Memphis wanted photos with her. Even “Good Morning America” and the “Ellen DeGeneres Show” reached out because she received national attention.

“Everyone just loves a feel-good, positive story,” Lashara says. “The experience helped take my mind off of cancer. I actually interviewed with Channel 5 the day of my surgery.” Lashara says that staying positive is what got her through the difficult time. “The symptoms of something may be there, but focus on the health you do have instead.” Her gym family has been hugely supportive. Thinking about exercising was an encouraging thought for her during her recovery. “I think this whole experience, including the duck story, has positively impacted me and also shown my children the importance of taking care of themselves and being positive.”

“I use to have low self-esteem, but working out helped me physically and emotionally.”

COACH’S CORNER By Rachel Randall

How to Survive Summer Running Summer is officially here and getting out the door to run in the heat takes some serious motivation, along with some preparation. With the right mindset and a little planning, you can become acclimated to running in the heat—and might even find you enjoy it!

CLOTHING

ACCLIMATION

As the saying goes, ‘There aren’t bad conditions, just bad gear.” Having the right clothing can go a long way toward your comfort when running in the heat. Wear loose-fitting shorts and singlets or tank tops made from technical fabrics that wick moisture away from your body. Choose a light-colored hat or visor to keep the sun from directly hitting your head. Sunglasses will help protect your eyes. Most run-specific specs these days have polarized lenses, are lightweight, and won’t slip. Having the right gear won’t solve everything, but it will improve your comfort level.

Allow your body time to get used to the hotter conditions. Most runners and walkers can adapt to the heat with consistent effort in a 2-3 week period. Heat and humidity can have a huge impact on your effort level and therefore your pace. Afford yourself walking breaks. Or better yet, leave your watch at home and run based on effort.

Be flexible and slow down if needed, maybe even by 1-2 minutes a mile for a few weeks

Goodr is a great option for stylish and affordable run-specific glasses.

TIMING HYDRATION This is always important, but even more so during the hottest months. Make a habit of sipping water or an electrolyte drink throughout your day, every day. Depending on the length of your run, you may need to carry extra water or electrolytes in a handheld bottle or a “fuel-belt” style carrier. Electrolytes will help your body retain the water you drink to keep your hydration level high. If carrying a bottle isn’t your thing, plan your route around TapRoutes or carry some spare cash for a convenience store stop if needed.

Nuun, SaltStick, Tailwind Nutrition, and Scratch Labs are all good electrolyte options.

Visit Fleet Feet for your hot weather running needs. We have a large assortment of hydration systems, electrolyte supplements, and technical clothing to make summer running bearable.

10

Timing is everything. Run in the early morning or late at night to avoid the heat of the day. Memphis sees lower temperatures with higher humidity in the mornings. Evenings bring lower humidity but typically have higher temperatures. Find what works for your body and what is most comfortable for you.

While summers in the South don’t present ideal conditions, you can embrace the heat and get outdoors with the right mindset and some preparation. Daily attention to hydration and nutrition, as well as having the right gear and planning ahead, can make summer runs tolerable. Not only will you see your performance improve when cooler temperatures return, but you might just find more appreciation for those cold winter mornings.

Rachel Randall is the go-to girl for all marketing, media, and events at Fleet Feet Sports. She has run more marathons that she can count, including the 2017 NYC marathon in November.

4 STEPs for your Best Skin Ever The saying, “No pain, no gain,” is daunting, but keeping fit and healthy takes hard work and consistency. The same is true for the health of your skin. While experiencing pain isn’t guaranteed on the journey to healthy skin, it needs a push in the same way your muscles do. Keeping skin fit can be fun by following these STEPs.

1 2

STIMULATE The skin needs to be stimulated to produce gene signals that lead to repair and rejuvenation. Laser and light treatments, such as erbium:YAG, CO2, IPL, and RF microneedling, stimulate the dermis and deep tissue with heat-induced injury. This stimulates the reparative processes and the induction of growth factors, cytokines, and proteins that repair the wound. This leaves you with younger-looking, rejuvenated skin. In addition, light treatments, such as Broadband light (BBL), may induce the expression of genes associated with reversing signs of skin cell aging and increasing cell lifespan.

TREAT The term “anti-aging skin care” refers to topicals designed to reach the cellular and molecular levels of the skin. They promote signaling that drives collagen production and remodeling, barrier repair, and healthy cell turnover. Retinoids, such as retinoic acid and retinol, improve cell turnover and promote new collagen growth. Cleansers containing alpha and beta-hydroxy acids help exfoliate dead skin cells for smooth, reinvigorated skin. Pigment-correcting serums and brightening creams help even skin tone and remove signs of sun damage and aging. And don’t forget to moisturize with high-quality hydrators and emollients.

3 4 12

Dr. Alan Levy is a dermatologist and owner of Levy Dermatology. He specializes in surgical and cosmetic dermatology. For a consultation call 901.295.0183 or visit Levydermatology.com.

These STEPs are the foundation for improving your skin’s health and keeping it looking good for many years. If you want your skin to do its job, you must do yours to make it the healthiest it can be.

ENRICH What you eat impacts your skin by nourishing it from the inside out. Similarly, polypeptides, antioxidants, vitamins, and growth factors found in high-quality skin care can nourish the skin and improve the functioning of the cells from the outside in. Skin research has led to new technologies for anti-aging. Topical growth factors and polypeptides specifically engineered to enrich the skin with new collagen and elastin can really improve the appearance of photo-aging skin at the molecular level. Vitamin C serums and green tea polyphenols are potent antioxidants that fight free radical damage, which occurs with everyday environmental and ultraviolet exposure. All of this helps reverse signs of sun damage and kick starts the reparative processes in your skin.

PROTECT The harmful effects of solar radiation and environmental pollutants on the appearance and quality of the skin are clear. Broad spectrum sunscreen and UPF clothing are critical for preventing the process of elastosis, which is the degradation of elastin and collagen that occurs with chronic sun exposure, and carcinogenesis, the development of skin cancer. Sunscreens containing zinc oxide or titanium dioxide are the most protective because these substances reflect the harmful UVA and UVB rays that are responsible for skin cancer and photo-aging. Other chemicals such as avobenzone, oxybenzone, octinoxate, and octisalate absorb ultraviolet rays so that they do not advance to the deeper parts of the skin. While sunscreens containing these chemicals are beneficial, physical sunscreens with zinc oxide and/or titanium dioxide provide superior protection with a greater degree of water resistance. In addition to applying sunscreen 20 minutes prior to sun exposure, always remember to wear a wide-brimmed hat when exposed to the sun for longer than 5-10 minutes. Seek shade during peak hours from 10 am to 3 pm, and reapply sunscreen every 80 minutes or more frequently if you are in the water or sweating.

Follow these STEPs every day to work your way to healthier, more resilient, and more beautiful skin.

WEEKEND WARRIOR

TRACY CHISM Runner, 49, Business Development Director for BDO USA, LLP, wife & mother

1

6

I am a member of SoleMates Running Club, MRTC, and Memphis Hightailers. I recently ran the Luigi 5K (2nd place in age group), Andrew Jackson Marathon (2nd in age group), and my first 50K in March.

Because I am a business developer, I entertain a lot. Amergio is my favorite lunch place in Memphis. My favorite dish is the Barramundi on the plank with charred veggies. At night, you may find me at Jim’s Place Grille with my husband and a Woodford on the rocks.

2

7

My most memorable experience was running my first marathon. It was the inaugural Herb Parsons Trail run. It rained all day and the temps were in the 30s. Over half the entrants didn’t show or dropped out at the half. It was so grueling that I felt defeated at the finish, but a month later that feeling changed to pride and accomplishment.

My biggest guilty pleasure is a Sonic Oreo Blast. (Don’t tell my trainer, Javier Castro).

8 I would love to have dinner with (the late) Este Lauder. She was a very interesting businesswoman who used unconventional means to accomplish her goals. Not only was she a trailblazer, she was also a bit misbehaved. That would be an entertaining evening!

3 I love so many things about running. For one, it’s cheap therapy! During the week I run very early in the morning, often alone. I love the stillness of my environment and thinking through my day. Other times, I run with friends as a social outlet.

4 One of my other passions is cars! My father built and raced cars. I grew up at the drag strip and in his body shop.

18

5 The next big event I have scheduled will be my second 50K trail run in October at the inaugural “Walking Tall.” This is being held in the area that I grew up in, so it will be nice to go “home” as well as run it with several of my Memphis friends and family.

“I love so many things about running. For one, it’s cheap therapy!”

WEEKEND WARRIOR

SCOTT STADER Runner, 46, Consultant with AT&T, President & Founder of RUN365, husband & father

1

5

We are a running family. My wife, Jana, and I run races almost every weekend. Ryan has run at least one 5K a month for over two and a half years now.

The 2013 Boston Marathon was my second year running that race and the most unforgettable experience.

6

2

To me, running is all about relationships. I feel incredibly blessed to share miles with my wife, daughters, friends, family, and co-workers. Seeing their success and joy in this sport/ community keeps me going.

I finished Bear Lake Marathon, which was three consecutive days of racing: Day 1 - Marathon in Idaho, Day 2 - Marathon in Wyoming (2nd in my age group), and Day 3 - Half Marathon in Utah.

7

3

I lost 70 pounds when I started running 13 years ago and have kept most of it off. The Lord used running to help change my life and give me a firm direction.

I have a running streak of at least one mile every day for five and a half years. I wanted to share my love for running with others so I started my running group, RUN365, six years ago. Through the success of this community, we started a kids club, Kids RUN365, that has just begun its fourth year and has over 250 kids involved on a weekly basis.

20

8 Casa Mexicana is my favorite restaurant in town. If you run every day, you should eat Mexican every day too!

4

9

I also am working on running a full marathon in each state. I just finished states 40 and 41. I’ve run 79 full and/or ultramarathons and 102 half marathons so far.

“No one, regardless of talent, ever makes it on their own.” —Team RUN365

Snack Ideas that Pack a Punch!

By Blair Mize, MS, RDN, CSSD, LDN

For some, snacking feels foreign or forbidden. For others, nibbles between meals consist of trips to the candy dish or vending machine. And still, others are just tired of the same old snacks day in and day out. Here’s What We Know:

Dippable…

Establishing a rhythm of eating every 3-5 hours leads to stable energy levels and prevents ravenous hunger (often followed by overeating at the next meal). However, not many are ready to eat dinner at 4:00 in the afternoon. Snacks work double duty by filling longer intervals between meals and closing “nutritional gaps” or providing additional opportunities to nosh on a wider variety of foods and nutrients.

Portion out a handful of tortilla or sweet potato chips and dunk in a mini cup of guacamole.

Most people need one to three snacks per day. Follow this formula: carbohydrate + protein and/or fat = optimal satiety, balance, and variety. No matter the craving or occasion, these snacks hit the spot.

Try a snack pack like Balanced Breaks or create combinations of dried fruit and nuts with cheese in pre-portioned containers.

Budget Friendly… 1-2 hardboiled eggs + summer berries or a banana.

Sweet & Savory…

Desk Drawer Snacks…

Craving a creamy cooldown… Mix frozen fruit like blueberries, pineapple, or mango into regular or Greek yogurt. The yogurt freezes around the fruit, making a frozen sweet treat.

A snack that travels... Create your own trail mix. With endless assortments of flavors and textures, you’ll never burn out on combinations of nuts, seeds, grains, dried fruits, and sweets. A personal favorite: salted cashews, walnuts, dried cherries, and dark chocolate cranberries.

Drinkable… Blend yogurt, frozen fruit, a little juice or milk, and ice for a refreshing poolside smoothie. For a sippable snack during an afternoon meeting, look for new grab-and-go Greek yogurt drinks. An 8-ounce glass of milk packs carbohydrates, protein, and a little fat for a surprisingly satisfying snack.

It can’t hurt to keep a stash of jerky or protein bars at the office.

Creative in the kitchen… With a little planning and prep, make your own energy balls instead of rummaging at the bottom of your bag for a crushed granola bar. There are hundreds of recipes online.

Craving crunch… Toss popcorn with grated Parmesan cheese and fresh rosemary. It’s shareable too!

Feeling fancy… Plate a combination of olives, prosciutto, cheese, fruits, and veggies for a mini charcuterie board.

Needing Staying Power…

Perfect for mid-morning snacking: a frozen whole grain waffle or mini bagel with a little cream cheese and sliced fruit.

Veggie Delicious… Roasted chickpeas come pre-packaged, but making them at home is pretty easy, too. Raw veggies + hummus or homemade salad dressing can quell your appetite long enough to get dinner on the table.

Sweet Treat… We love some of the new protein cookies hitting grocery store shelves!

Roll up slices of turkey around cheese and/or avocado slices. For extra energy, wrap it all up in a tortilla.

REMEMBER: Different food satisfies hunger for varying periods of time. Experiment with different combinations and portion sizes based on the time since your last meal and how long the snack needs to sustain you. With a little practice, 22

Breakfast Part 2…

you’ll become a pro at gauging which snack is right for which scenario.

Coastal Quinoa Salad By Andrea LeTard

Inspired by a salad eaten on a summer trip to a seaside resort on the southern coast of England, this meal is clean, light, healthy, and perfect for hot days. A few unique ingredients may surprise you but are available at local specialty grocery stores. They make this salad extra-special and delicious. It’s nutty, sweet, salty, acidic, and tart with a perfectly crunchy texture you won’t be able to get enough of.

4 to 6 servings

INGREDIENTS q ½ red onion – thinly sliced q 1 /3 cup apple cider vinegar q 1 ½ Tbsp sugar q 1 ½ tsp kosher salt q 1 cup black quinoa q 4 cups spinach – roughly chopped q 1 cup crunchy or regular sprouts q 1 cup Petits Poivrons, also called Sweety Drop Peppers (found at salad buffet or canned at specialty grocery stores) – drained q 3 green onions – sliced q 2 plum tomatoes – cubed q 2 red radishes – sliced as thinly as possible q 1 large mango – peeled, pitted, and cut into matchsticks q ¼ cup capers q 2 Tbsp good-quality white balsamic vinegar q ½ lemon q ¼ cup good-quality extra virgin olive oil

24

PICKLE THE ONIONS

COOK THE QUINOA

ASSEMBLE THE SALAD

Place the sliced red onion in a mason jar. Heat a saucepan over high heat and add ½ cup of water, apple cider vinegar, sugar, and 1 tsp salt. Whisk together until sugar and salt dissolve, then pour over onions. Let sit for at least 1 hour at room temperature. Refrigerate until ready to use and drain before using.

Heat another saucepan over high heat and add the quinoa, 2 cups water, and ½ teaspoon salt. Bring to a boil, then cover it and simmer until all water is absorbed and the quinoa is cooked.

In a large salad bowl, add the quinoa, drained red onions, spinach, sprouts, Sweety Drop Peppers, green onions, tomatoes, radishes, mango, and capers. Toss together, then drizzle with the white balsamic, lemon juice, and olive oil. Toss together again until well combined.

Abdu brings minimally invasive hope to women’s care

R

arely does a day go by that A. Ben Abdu, MD, isn’t amazed at the strength of his female patients. Dr. Abdu focuses on minimally invasive gynecological surgeries at Regional One Health. His training focused on advanced laparoscopy, minimally invasive female pelvic medicine and reconstructive surgery, vaginal surgery, tubal reversals, female urology and pelvic pain medicine. He primarily works out of Regional One Health’s East Campus, which houses a hub of super sub-specialty women’s services including minimally invasive GYN surgery, urogynecology and reproductive medicine. It’s there that Dr. Abdu interacts with patients who never cease to amaze him by their resiliency to continue on despite pelvic issues. “I think women are amazing and innovative in their approach to their problem,” he said. “Women find unique ways to deal with their problems and live with them. They think it’s just part of aging. They’re thinking, ‘I’m 56, I’ve had three kids and it’s just par for the course.’ No ma’am, it’s not par for the course. It always blows my mind and I say to them, ‘You know I can fix that?’ It makes me in awe of women.” Dr. Abdu works with women experiencing a range of pelvic issues that have been undiagnosed or inadequately treated. Those issues include chronic pelvic pain, history

BEN ABDU of endometriosis, painful periods, pain during intercourse, leaking urine or a vaginal bulge. Dr. Abdu also is the only surgeon in Memphis who does tubal reversal procedures robotically. Dr. Abdu’s laparoscopic approach is a low-risk, minimally invasive procedure. “I’m here to help,” he said. “I love what I do and I love Memphis. I say this to a lot of patients and I say it sincerely. There are no guarantees in medicine. But the one thing I can give at the end of the day is my 100 percent guarantee that I’m meticulous, and I give the care to my patients that I would expect for a family member.”
