Discover, Connect, and Know through Art A Peek into the Brooks Museum’s Art Therapy Access Program “I found I could say things with color and shapes that I couldn’t say any other way–things I had no words for.” — Georgia O’Keeffe The pioneering American modernist artist Georgia O’Keeffe (whose work was recently on view at the Memphis Brooks Museum of Art) had a way of discovering, connecting, and knowing the world around her through the creative process of art making. The profession of art therapy works in a similar way. It brings together the fields of visual art and psychology to help people of all ages and needs learn, heal, and grow. By creating art, being with art, and reflecting upon art, art therapy clients often discover a new language beyond words— using lines, shapes, and colors—that allows them to (re)discover parts of themselves..

Discovering Through Art Imagine walking into an art museum. You see a painting of a young woman sitting under a tree reading and you feel a sense of peace. In the next gallery, you see a sculpture made of an unexpected material that sparks your curiosity. A few steps more, a photograph ignites memories of your childhood and you feel surprised by how vivid those moments and emotions are after so many years. These types of experiences and feelings drive the Art Therapy Access Program at the Brooks Museum.

Connecting Through Art Now, imagine walking into an art museum and you join a group of people who, like you, are interested in growing and healing. You discover pieces of art in the galleries that make you feel peaceful, curious, and surprised. As a group, you explore what this art is about through colors, materials, setting, and composition to understand what

evokes these positive emotions. Together, you begin making connections about where and how you experience these positive emotions in your own life, as well as the challenges that hinder you from feeling them. The art therapy process strives to help you discover and make connections through art in a trusting environment while connecting with others to help you safely and genuinely express yourself as you explore various topics.

After spending time discovering and connecting in the galleries, you head to the museum art studio. You create a piece of art about a positive emotion you would like to feel more your life. It’s been years since you have created any type of art, but your newfound trust and connections with the group inspire and empower you to take a chance to try out this new way of expressing, knowing, and sharing about yourself through art.

LIVING WELL By Robert Wegner, MD

Gastric Bypass: Still the Gold Standard The laparoscopic gastric bypass has been done on hundreds of thousands of patients; its outcomes have been studied and its risks and benefits evaluated for decades. Although the sleeve gastrectomy has gained popularity since 2015, largely replacing the market share lost by gastric band, the gastric bypass is still widely accepted as the “gold standard” for weight loss surgery. Here’s why:

• Studies show patients lose 60%–70% of their excess weight in the first 18 months after surgery. • The resolution of common comorbidities associated with obesity are resolved up to 90% of the time (hypertension, type 2 diabetes, sleep apnea, acid reflux, hyperlipidemia, joint pain, etc.). • The American Diabetes Association has now accepted gastric bypass as the recommended treatment for obese patients with type 2 diabetes. • Not only is there a restrictive component (less volume of food consumed), studies show gastric bypass has the highest hormonal effect on satiety, appetite, and metabolism. • According to the most recent STAMPEDE trial from Cleveland Clinic, not only did gastric bypass have the most percentage of excess weight loss and greatest resolution of comorbidities, but it also scored higher on long-term patient satisfaction when compared to the gastric sleeve. • Gastric bypass is an extremely safe operation when compared to other commonly performed procedures. Its overall 30-day mortality is lower than laparoscopic gallbladder removal. • The procedure typically takes about an hour to perform laparoscopically through six small incisions, and the hospital stay is usually one night. • Gastric bypass is covered by most private insurance plans, including Medicare.

These are some of the reasons why the gastric bypass is such an effective and safe treatment for morbid obesity. Having performed this operation thousands of times, I can personally attest to its power to change people’s lives. For more information on gastric bypass surgery, visit Memphisweightlosssurgery.com.

LIVING WELL By Paul Bierman, MD

Prevent Colon Cancer! Cancer of the colon is a serious but easily detected malignancy. It is the second-leading cause of cancer deaths in the country and killed 50,000 people this past year. Early detection promises a high chance of survival. When detected early, 90% of patients can be cured. Colonoscopy screenings have decreased colon cancer deaths by over 50%. Cancer that begins in either the colon or rectum is called Colorectal Cancer (CRC). It begins in the tissues that line the colon (the large intestine) as small growths called adenomatous polyps. Over 7–10 years, these small growths become cancerous. The majority (90%) of cases occur after age 50. There is strong evidence of abnormal genes for colon polyps (abnormal growths) that can be passed from parent to child. When the controlling genes are absent, there is a tendency to grow polyps, which in turn can become cancerous. A colonoscopy can find precancerous polyps so they can be removed before they turn into cancer. At least 75% of colorectal cancer can be avoided through early detection and removal of precancerous polyps. Unfortunately, fewer than 60% of people over the age of 50 get their recommended colonoscopy.

Does screening really reduce cancer mortality and why? Yes. Colorectal cancer screening can detect early-stage cancer, leading to the removal of premalignant polyps. This reduces both cancer incidence and mortality by 90%. There are other types of screening tests that are less effective, but the best test for a patient is the one he or she is willing to undergo. These include tests to detect blood or abnormal DNA in the stool, a virtual colonoscopy via CT scan, or a flexible sigmoidoscopy combined with stool blood testing.

Why do you recommend colonoscopy as the preferred cancer screening exam? The American College of Gastroenterology considers colonoscopy the “gold standard” for colorectal screening because it allows physicians to look directly at the entire colon and to identify suspicious growths. It is the only test that allows for immediate biopsy and removal of a polyp at the same time it is identified. For persons at average risk of colon cancer, a colonoscopy only needs to be performed once every 10 years. If polyps are found, then a colonoscopy should be repeated every five years.

Who is at risk for colorectal cancer? The risk of developing colorectal cancer increases with age. Men and women ages 50 and older are at an increased risk for developing colorectal cancer and should be screened every 10 years. Some people are at a higher risk and should be screened at an age younger than 50. These include those with a personal or family history of colorectal cancer or polyps; people with Crohn’s disease or Ulcerative colitis; and those with a strong family history of breast, ovarian, or endometrial cancers. However, only 20% of colorectal cancer patients report a family history with these risk factors. Most colon cancers occur out of the blue for unknown reasons. Some factors that can increase risk include obesity, smoking, heavy alcohol use, a high-fat diet, and a sedentary lifestyle.

What are the Symptoms? Most colorectal cancers produce no symptoms until late in the disease, which is why screening is so important. Symptoms that should prompt a visit with your physician include: new onset of abdominal pain, blood in or on the stool, a change in stool caliber or shape, or a change in typical bowel habits (constipation or diarrhea).

How can I lower my risk? To lower your risk of colorectal cancer, the American Society of Gastrointestinal Endoscopy recommends that you: • G et regular colorectal cancer screenings beginning at age 50 • E at a low-fat, high-fiber diet with lots of fresh fruits and vegetables • L imit your consumption of red and processed meats • Drink alcohol in moderation • Q uit tobacco (Alcohol and tobacco in combination are linked to increased risk of colorectal cancer.) • E xercise at least 20 minutes three to four times each week and maintain a healthy weight. If you were born before 1969, prioritize your colonoscopy screening!

BEAUT Y By Shannon Anzivino, NP

Platelet Rich Plasma for Facial Rejuvenation Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) is the part of the blood that is rich in growth and healing factors. It repairs damaged joints, tendons, and muscles, while also rejuvenating skin!

Actual Glo Patient

This may bring up images of celebrity faces smeared with blood on social media. A PRP facial may appear scary, but it’s actually an amazing treatment with visible results. It begins with a blood sample, which is placed in a centrifuge and spun down so that PRP can be extracted. PRP is then applied to the face through microneedling and injection. Both the PRP and microneedling stimulate collagen production and are more effective when done together. This medical procedure should be performed by a licensed professional. It’s safe because it uses your own recycled blood, and it works for all skin types. According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, all 14 studies that have evaluated the use of PRP for facial rejuvenation have positive aesthetic outcomes. Reported benefits of PRP include improvements in the volume, texture, and tone of facial skin and decreased the appearance of wrinkles. Improvements in acne scarring and hair regrowth in areas of hair loss have been observed. PRP is also beneficial for under the eyes because it generates volume, collagen, and elastin, which strengthen and thicken the tissue in this area.

How long do the benefits of PRP last?

before

after

On average, the collagen produced in your body lasts about two years before it begins to dissipate. Therefore, the benefits of PRP last for approximately two years. Most will want a touchup treatment in one year.

Does a PRP facial hurt?

Actual Glo Patient

There is minimal discomfort during the treatment. A topical numbing cream is applied prior to the start of the facial.

How many PRP facials does one need to see the full benefit? Three consecutive treatments spaced approximately four weeks apart are recommended for optimal results.

What is the downtime after a PRP facial? There will be visible redness on the first day. On day two, a mineral powder can be applied to cover any existing redness. Orthopedic surgeons have already been using PRP for years to heal injured joints with excellent results. Those using PRP for aesthetic procedures are also enjoying beautiful results with little to no risk and very little downtime. Because collagen is the latticework for the face, the twofold stimulation of collagen through PRP and microneedling has the potential to restructure the skin and reverse the signs of aging.

Keto and Consistency Darnell Settles’s 250-Pound Weight Loss Journey After a decade of failed diets and emotional eating, Darnell Settles III, 36, completely transformed his life. He was slowly gaining weight through high school and during undergrad at the University of Memphis. At his heaviest, he wore a size 72 pant and suspects he weighed about 560 pounds. “I did a good job avoiding scales,” he says. “When you’re overweight, it affects every aspect of your life. I felt powerless, and people would constantly talk to me about my weight and accuse me of not caring. My mom always bought me workout clothes for Christmas as a way of encouraging me to start exercising.” In January 2017, Darnell finally started to put those gifts to use and signed up for a gym membership. He saw some positive results, but it was after a difficult breakup in February that he decided to make a permanent change in his diet. Friends from online fitness communities encouraged him to try a keto diet. He got the tools he needed to start weighing food and tossed carbs for good. Over the next year, Darnell weighed himself monthly at the Baptist Memorial Hospital scale. By January 2018, he won the Kroc Center’s annual Aim to Maintain program for the biggest weight loss. Today, Darnell weighs 308 pounds and is looking toward hitting 20% percent body fat. He also moderates the same Facebook page that jump-started his lifestyle change, Ketogenic Dieters, and uses that platform to encourage and help others. “Losing 250 pounds in two years completely changed my life,” Darnell says. “Non-scale victories are the best part. I can buy clothes at a regular store. I can fit into the booths at restaurants. I’ve been freed of lots of insecurity and anxiety.”

The Diet Darnell ascribes to a version of keto focused on adequate protein, moderate fat, and low carbs. On a typical morning, he eats three eggs and four slices of bacon and drinks a black coffee with zero-carb protein powder mixed in. Lunch and dinner are strict, usually grilled meat with a side of dark green veggies; sirloin and broccoli are his favorites. “I had to shift my mindset,” Darnell says. “I’m in control of what I put in my body, and I don’t feel limited. Because I live downtown, it would be so easy to go grab a pizza at a place like Aldo’s, but I just don’t. These aren’t just foods I can’t eat, they’re foods I don’t eat. My version of going out is to order two sides of grilled chicken at a Mexican restaurant.” Some of his favorite accommodating eateries in Memphis include El Mezcal, Babalu, and the Majestic Grille. “Even at work, when we have lunches catered, people take my needs seriously because I do. People have seen me be consistent, and they want to help,” he says. “The most important thing is not being afraid to ask. I have learned to stand up for who I want to be.”

The Workout Darnell started slowly with exercise, walking a mile or two every morning on the Green Line back in 2014. Since then, he has expanded his regimen to 45 minutes of strength training four times a week at LA Fitness or Harbortown Fitness. “I like to use 5x5 weight-lifting programs with classic exercises like bench presses, upright rows, leg extensions, and more,” he says. “The best advice I can give to people is to be consistent. You don’t have to make yourself miserable, but you also can’t skip.”

“Losing 250 pounds in two years has completely changed my life.” 16

FIT KID By Chloe Webster. Photo by Tindall Stephens.

Gymnast Taylor Ann Wilson and the Power of Getting Back Up Again

Since age three, the gym has been a second home for high school senior Taylor Ann Wilson of St. Mary’s Episcopal School. While most people would picture a room filled with treadmills and weights, Taylor sees balance beams and uneven bars, cheering families, and insistent coaches. Through constant challenge and competition, gymnastics has taught this young athlete the importance of persevering when times get rough. Like most young gymnasts, she wanted to make it to the Olympics one day, but she eventually started focusing on the more realistic goal of competing at the collegiate level. Getting into a school that’s competitive in gymnastics means going through a rigorous recruiting process. After years of work, Taylor had finally reached Level 10 in the USA Gymnastics Junior Olympics program. However, after competing in her first meet at that level, she broke her foot during practice, putting her out the rest of her junior year season. This was a devastating setback because junior year is the prime time for scouts and recruitments, and she only had one meet’s worth of statistics.

18

Taylor was convinced that her injury had stolen any chance of continuing her dream at the college level. “I thought it was too late, so I tried to convince myself that I would just have a good Level 10 season during senior year and stop after that,” she says. When she finally got back to the gym, it was already summer. Taylor was anxious about getting her skills back. “I was stressing so much that I was working backward,” she admits. Her coach advised her to stop worrying about college and just focus on getting her skills back for her, not a college scout. She says, “It was pretty much decided that college was not happening at that point.” A mid-August surprise got Taylor’s hopes back up again. A coach from Centenary College of Louisiana contacted her after seeing some of her Level 9 regional meet performances on YouTube and was wondering if she was still looking for somewhere to go to school. After a couple months of exchanging emails, Centenary asked her to come down to take a tour and meet the team. “It was crazy because it seemed so late,” she says. In October, the Centenary coach offered Taylor a spot on the team, and Taylor immediately

accepted, making her dream of 15 years a reality. Taylor’s injury that came during her most crucial year was the hardest challenge she had to face as a gymnast but was certainly not the only one. Showing up for long practices day after day on top of schoolwork and trying to have a social life has required years of dedication and focus. Taylor admits that finding balance is always challenging and that late nights are common. Through all of the work, sweat, feats, and falls, she has had her teammates to boost her up. These are the girls that have been with her through it all and continually push her to be her best. “We cheer each other on because we know how important the team is to making sure each one of us is successful,” she says. Every day in the gym has made Taylor Ann Wilson into who she is today. She says her life as a gymnast has taught her one major lesson: fall seven times, get up eight. It’s that lesson that pushed her to come back after her injury, and it’s that lesson that will make her a success as she fulfills her dream as a collegiate athlete.

Half marathon runner, outdoor enthusiast, and lover of chai tea, Chloe is an aspiring writer with a passion for living a healthy life. Why Chris Collins Is In Demand From elite athletes to absolute beginners, this trainer is making exercise accessible to everyone. At 31, Chris Collins is already becoming a well known go-to guy for all things fitness-related in Memphis. With an impressive roster of clients, including top American soccer player Tim Howard and a former NFL defensive back, he’s also earned the position of strength and condition coach for Memphis’s new professional soccer team, 901 FC. This dynamic and outgoing Collierville native grew up competing in football, basketball, and track. Chris went on to play football at Tennessee State University and majored in Exercise Science. While in college, he racked up experience as a personal trainer at Life Time Fitness, and then graduated with a masters. He’s also a certified Corrective Exercise Specialist and Performance Enhancement Specialist.

Even though he’s backed by some serious credentials and a notable client list, Chris says, “My goal is to help as many people as I can.” He works with those of all ages and abilities in person and online, and does corporate wellness coaching. “My goal has always been to be able to sit down with anyone, regardless of their level of fitness or socioeconomic status, and be able to help them. Everyone should be able to enjoy good health for a higher quality of life.” Chris takes a collaborative approach to training, which he credits to his background in team sports. “It’s easy to find a trainer who will kick your butt,” he says. Instead, he starts with a face-to-face conversation. “I believe in empathizing with people in order to motivate them. Understanding someone means

getting to know the whole picture by looking at their social support networks, knowing what challenges they have faced, and taking in their concerns.” With each person he takes on, he envisions long-term lifestyle changes and doesn’t emphasize a one-sizefits-all approach. “If there’s something a person dislikes, I don’t force that on them. This is particularly true for dieting. You have to see what works best for a person’s body and make it sustainable. This fitness journey is about changes that can be maintained for life.” Chris has a solid record of helping people reach their aesthetic goals, but his priority is overall health. “I’m happier when I see people come in with great blood work than when they reach a number on the scale or

can show off a six-pack. Appearance and athletic performance are great motivators, but I want to train people to be fit and healthy inside and out.” “The fitness industry loves to promote success stories, but the reality is that there are even more people who lost their motivation and didn’t attain their goals. A good trainer needs to know how to motivate people and keep them motivated.” Helping people be their best selves is a way of life for Chris. “I love it when a client tells me, ‘It’s getting easier.’ What’s really happening is that they’re getting stronger! That’s beautiful because we don’t need our journeys to be easy. What we need is strength and someone to support us along the way.”

901 FC is Memphis’s new professional soccer team. Tim Howard, U.S. Men’s National Team all-time winningest goalkeeper, is a minority owner of 901 FC.

Chris Collins, Assitant Coach (Strength and Conditioning) at Memphis 901 FC

901 FC is part of the United Soccer League. The season begins on March 9 with a match against the Tampa Bay Rowdies. All home games will be played at AutoZone Park in Downtown Memphis.

Equestrian Coach

Ashley Fant 22

Talks Health and Horses

COVER PROFILE By Caroline Sposto. Photo by Tindall Stephens.

T

here’s a reason Ashley Fant exudes radiant contentment. Her childhood dream has become her career. Fit, trim, and energetic at 39, she is a mother, horse trainer, rider, equestrian coach, and entrepreneur. “I would not be who I am without horses,” she says.

She runs Ashley Fant Show Stables in Collierville, serving hunter and jumper riders at all levels. She’s there in the barn getting her boots muddy every day. “Equestrianship is a very active lifestyle from caring for the horses to tacking up and riding,” Ashley explains. The benefits of riding go beyond the physical though. “The bond between horse and rider does a lot emotionally and spiritually,” she says. “They’re partners. Every time a rider and a horse work together, both learn new things.” According to Ashley, riding is a lot more than just sitting down on the horse and holding on. You have to develop heightened control over your body from your posture to the angle of your feet and subtle hand movements. “Everything you do affects your horse,” she says. A big part of riding is strength and balance. “Equestrian training quickly makes you aware of asymmetry in your body,” she says. Equestrianship also builds coordination, suppleness, and agility. “Every rider needs to be a good ‘dancer partner’ for their horse.” Ashley says that after a few months of riding, students often notice their clothes look and fit better. “Good posture makes a person stronger, and it helps them look a lot fitter, too!” She sees a lot of improvement in the young riders, who would otherwise be bent over a phone or laptop. It was at age 10 when Ashley herself fell in love with horses. A field trip brought her class to a farm outside her native New Orleans. The owner had a horse and let each

kid take a turn riding. Ashley felt immediately at home in a saddle. Her parents encouraged her to pursue riding lessons, and she had to start working early on in order to supplement the expense. “Most people who grow up to become professional equestrians have to do that,” she says. A little while after Ashley graduated college, she found full-time work at a riding stable, and then nine years later, she was able to open her own barn. “Riding horses is immensely satisfying, but it’s not easy,” she says. Ashley views the inherent challenges in horsemanship as character-building opportunities. She loves to see the growth in her students as well. “My students are responsible for the equipment, the horse, and the facility. Our standards are very high. It’s fun to see a child who wouldn’t pick up their clothes turn into one who will muck out a barn without being asked.” Riding is also a great way to gain fortitude and self-confidence. “It’s not unusual for a shy student to start excelling in other areas like theater or public speaking after just a year of riding lessons.” She says that adults often come away with a heightened ability to pick up other people’s nonverbal communication as a byproduct of working with a horse. Horseback riding isn’t the easiest sport to get into. Ashley reiterates that she didn’t come from a wealthy family. “Equestrianship isn’t as cost-prohibitive as people think. Like any other investment, it requires focus, prioritization, and a little sacrifice. If someone is determined to ride, there is always a way to work it out.” Another preconception Ashley wants to change is the notion that horseback riding has to start when you’re young. “It’s never too late to start riding,” she says. “You can find that spark at any age.” Clearly, Ashley still has that spark when it comes to her career. “I love what I do,” she says. “And I’m grateful every day to be able to do it!”

WEEKEND WARRIOR Interview by Hailey Thomas. Photo by Philip Murphy.

LISA MARIE HILL Distance Runner, 52, Counselor for the State of Tennessee, Running Coach with the MRTC Women’s Walk/Run Group

BRAGGIN’ RIGHTS:

OBSTACLE COURSE

I have competed in countless 5Ks, 10Ks, half marathons, marathons, and ultramarathons with numerous wins in various age groups. I ran the Boston Marathon in 2016, 2017, and 2018. I’ll be going back this Spring, and I also qualified for 2020.

I experienced two major injuries. The first was a partially torn Achilles (both ankles at the same time) right before the Phoenix Marathon in 2012. I went in a boot and air cast and ran a sub 4:30. I also experienced a knee injury that lasted 18 weeks before the 2018 St. Jude Marathon and missed qualifying for Boston by one minute. Six weeks later, I qualified for Boston 2020 at the Baton Rouge Marathon with a 14-minute cushion.

HIGHLIGHTS I like the Boston Marathon due to the level of competition and the prestige. It’s the same distance as any other marathon, but the Boston Marathon means so much more.

I

f RUNNING

Competing against myself is a constant challenge, and it takes a lot of self-discipline and motivation. This is what I enjoy the most about running. I only have my previous time to beat.

MOTIVATION My family history of diabetes and high blood pressure motivates me to stay fit.

NEXT CHALLENGE I’m running in Boston in April and the Detroit Free Press International Marathon in October this year. I’ll also participate in a few local races (MRTC Road Race Series).

GO-TO GEAR I absolutely can’t run without my Garmin 235, but I forgot to take it to Boston in 2018. I ended up buying another one at the Expo. Without it, my run doesn’t exist.

FAVORITE GET-AWAY Rehoboth Beach in Delaware is my favorite place to travel. It was the very first place we took our twins when they were 15 months old. It has a nice climate and a family-friendly beach.

“Competing against myself is a constant challenge.”

BEST EATS Southern Social is my favorite restaurant. I celebrated my recent birthday there and ordered roasted quail, mashed potatoes, and grilled asparagus. Their margaritas are delicious.

MOTTO Find the positive in defeat, as well as victory.

ROBERT GRIFFIN Runner, 44, Marketing Director for the Memphis in May International Festival

BRAGGIN’ RIGHTS: In the last eight years, I’ve completed 27 half marathons and six full marathons (including the Chicago Marathon three times and the Marine Corps Marathon once). While I never placed or won, my half marathon finishes were consistently in the top 12%–15% until recently when injuries slowed me down.

FUN RUN The New Orleans Rock & Roll Half Marathon has a fast, flat course, and there are so many great places to eat while you’re there. I’ve run it five times.

I

f RUNNING

No expensive equipment or other people needed. It’s a chance to think, pray, and clear your head. By yourself or with a group, running is a stress reliever without a prescription!

MOTIVATION My waistline. Fitness is cheaper than buying bigger clothes. Plus, my wife is a multiple Ironman. While I have no desire to do those, I also have no excuse to sit around while she stays active.

NEXT CHALLENGE I’d like to run the Memphis in May Great American River Run Half Marathon, but I will be working the event. Instead, I’ll be at the Navy 10 Nautical Miler the following weekend.

GO-TO GEAR I highly recommend Superfeet insoles because I’m flat-footed and they work great for me in all my shoes without the cost of custom orthotics.

OBSTACLE COURSE The only hardship I experience is getting out of the bed every morning at 4:15 to run or hit the gym.

26

FAVORITE GET-AWAY

BEST EATS

PASSION

After nearly every marathon, my wife and I fly straight to Punta Cana, Dominican Republic to enjoy a recovery week on the beach and in the resort restaurants. The DR isn’t as hot as Playa del Carmen, and it’s an easy flight compared to other Caribbean destinations. Your legs feel better after a week of laying on the beach.

There are so many choices! The lamb chops at The Capital Grille, the Tinga Nachos at Maciel’s Taco Shop downtown, the pulled pork at Central BBQ, the chili at Bogie’s in East Memphis….

Reading and cooking because they’re both stress relievers and entertainment. In the last three years, I’ve read 260 books, and my desserts are sought after among my friends and family.

“Running is a stress reliever without a prescription.”

FOOD+NUTRITION By Leslie Ely

Eating for a Healthy Colon The colon is a crucial part of your digestive system. This organ is tasked with re-absorbing fluids and processing waste products for the body to eliminate. With colorectal cancer as the third-most common cancer in the United States, it’s time to start thinking about the role of nutrition in gastrointestinal health.

Keep your colon as healthy as possible with these six strategies:

1

Chow down on fresh fruits and vegetables.

2

Choose lean meats like fish, chicken, and turkey when possible.

3

Consume enough vitamin D and calcium.

Choose a variety of colors to maximize the variety of vitamins, minerals, phytochemicals, and antioxidants. In addition, the soluble fiber found in fruits and veggies such as asparagus, artichokes, onions, legumes, bananas, apples, oats, and wheat bran can act as a prebiotic, supporting your “good gut” microbiota. Insoluble fiber found in legumes, whole grains, leafy greens, squash, and root veggies prevents constipation and keeps the walls of the colon strong.

4

Whole grains contain colon-friendly fiber, essential fatty acids, antioxidants, phytochemicals, vitamins, and minerals. Sources include barley, quinoa, whole-wheat flour, wild/brown rice, and oatmeal. Look for the words “100% whole grain” or the whole grain stamp on the packaging.

5

Get Moving!

6

Drink wisely.

Substitute lentils or other legumes as a protein source for a meatless meal.

Recent studies suggest these two micronutrients are associated with decreased risk of colorectal cancer; however, men should not consume more than the recommended daily calcium level (2,000 mg) due to the potential risk of prostate cancer with high calcium intake. Dairy products are well known for their rich calcium content, and non-dairy sources of calcium include dark leafy greens such as kale, spinach, and collard greens. Vitamin D can be obtained through sunlight, fatty fish, foods fortified with vitamin D (like dairy products or orange juice), and supplementation with Vitamin D3.

Consider making your grains whole.

A little exercise can go a long way in keeping bowels regular, reducing constipation, and lowering the risk of colon cancer. Whether it’s hiking, running, biking, yoga, kickboxing, hula hooping, or dancing, there’s no wrong way to move.

Drinking plenty of water can also help prevent constipation. Use the urine color test to determine whether or not you’ve had enough. Urine color should be pale yellow. Not a fan of plain water? Try adding fresh fruit. Limit alcohol consumption to two drinks/day or less for men or one drink/day or less for women.

It’s small changes like these that greatly reduce the risk of colorectal cancers while boosting overall health!
