A SK THE EXPER TS By Amelia P. Bailey, M.D.

Recurrent Pregnancy Loss 101 How is recurrent pregnancy loss (RPL) diagnosed?

What are possible treatments?

A woman is diagnosed with RPL after she has two miscarriages, which do not have to be consecutive.

For some factors, medication is able to optimize outcomes; for others, surgery is recommended. In vitro fertilization with genetic testing of embryos may also help decrease future miscarriages in some cases. Your doctor will be able to walk you through the decision-making process.

How many women suffer from RPL? Approximately 25% of women experience at least one miscarriage with 3-5% having RPL. It is very common, so do not feel alone if you are going through a loss.

When should I go see a specialist? Reproductive endocrinology and infertility (REI) specialists have additional training in the evaluation and treatment of RPL and should be seen as soon as the diagnosis is made.

What are causes of RPL? There are many potential causes of RPL, which your provider will investigate: genetic, anatomic, lifestyle/environmental, immune, infectious, and hormonal.

What tests will be done? Typically, this consists of blood tests on both the male and female partners as well as a vaginal ultrasound on the female. Tests may also be run on tissue from a miscarriage if that is available.

10

What are helpful resources for women with multiple miscarriages? Physical healing after a miscarriage typically takes six weeks. Emotional healing can understandably take much longer. There are books, support groups, and skilled therapists around Memphis who can help. It’s important to not blame yourself for a loss. Most miscarriages are due to factors outside your control.

Is there hope for a baby after multiple miscarriages? Even after three miscarriages, a woman has a 60-80% likelihood of carrying a baby to full-term. There are many things that can increase your chances of success. For more information call Fertility Associates of Memphis at 901.747.2229 or visit fertilitymemphis.com.

A SK THE EXPER TS By Larrie Rodriguez

The Benefits of Massage for Athletes From beginner athletes to elite competitors, massage therapy offers a variety of important health benefits. Professional athletes and their coaches have sworn by massage therapy for years—even keeping massage therapists on the payroll indefinitely. A growing body of research supports the health benefits of massage therapy. According to the American Massage Therapy Association, massage acts to improve performance, reduce pain, prevent injury, encourage focus, and shorten recovery time. It basically involves two types of responses: a mechanical response as a result of the pressure and movement and a reflex response where the nerves respond to the stimulation of a massage.

Types Of Massage For Athletes Athletes will benefit more from deep tissue, sports massage Thai, or table Thai massage. They are often fast-paced and involve stretching and other approaches, depending on their sport. They can be tailored as a pre-workout stretch and opportunity to warm up muscles, or used as a post-workout massage to reduce soreness and increase flexibility.

When To Schedule A Massage Research suggests that a massage here and there is nice but doesn’t have the same benefits as a regular massage program. Like exercise itself, the benefits are cumulative, meaning regular massages are more beneficial. Think of it as preventative maintenance. For best results, schedule a massage once a week, if possible, or every other week if training at a high level. If getting a weekly or bi-monthly massage isn’t in the budget, try for at least once a month.

Massage can do the following: • Reduce muscle tension • Help monitor muscle tone • Promote relaxation • Increase range of motion • D ecrease muscle stiffness and soreness after exercise • Enhance athletic performance • H elp prevent injuries when massage is received regularly

From Brows to Lasers Our Beauty Picks will put a Spring in Your Step

The Brows before

It’s all about the brows. From runways to fashion ads, models are flaunting thick and full eyebrows. Microblading is a semi-permanent tattoo done with a superfine pen that etches in “hair-like” strokes that fill in thin eyebrows to give a more natural look.

“Brows really define and frame your face and open up your eyes,” says Sarika Patel, Microblading Specialist/Permanent Makeup Artist with Glo Medical Aesthetics. “Microblading adds more dimension and is ideal for women who pencil in their brows every day.”

It requires two appointments to get the ideal brow and takes about two hours per session. Microblading lasts 12–18 months. Prices range from $550-$650 and consultations are free. glomedmemphis.com

It’s time to get your skin in shape for summer. Get rid of rosacea, sun damage, blemishes, spider veins, acne scars, and even wrinkles and droopy skin. Photorejuvenation has never been faster with the new Excel V laser treatment. Improve overall skin texture and tone with a gentle, non-invasive procedure. Most lasers take multiple sessions to achieve noticeable results, but many procedures performed with the Excel V will require just a single treatment, and results are visible almost immediately.

“After performing laser treatments for over 10 years at Solutions, the Excel V results are the best results I have seen thus far,” says Kate Gassaway, Family Nurse Practitioner and owner of Solutions Medical Center. “It is the most advanced technology, and we have had great customer satisfaction.” Treatments begin at $400. COACH’S CORNER

Secrets of the Sports Bra By Rachel Randall Time and time again, people stress that good quality and expertly-fit running shoes are a must when you’re pounding the pavement. If you’re a woman, though, there’s another piece of equipment worth spending money on—your sports bra. They are designed to significantly reduce breast movement during physical exercise. Breasts have no muscle, and without proper support, the skin and ligaments can break down and cause sagging. Once those ligaments stretch out, they do not bounce back. One study says a staggering 68% of women do not wear a sports bra during exercise. Brooks Running predicts that around 8 of every 10 women who do wear sports bras are either wearing the wrong size or the bra needs to be replaced.

HERE’S HOW TO GET A CORRECT FIT:

CARING FOR YOUR SPORTS BRA:

• G o to a specialty run or lingerie shop and get fitted, especially the first time you are purchasing a sports bra.

• I t should not see a birthday! Most sports bras last six months to one year.

• T here are many different breast shapes, so try on several different styles. • T he band that sits underneath is the foundation of the fit. It should be snug and lay flat and even across your back. If the band is loose or rides up, then the bra is too big. If the band digs in, then the bra is too small. • The straps should be snug and not slip. • I f wearing an underwire, it should lay flat across your body.

• I f you start to see some chafing, your bra is probably stretched out. • W ash your bra in cold water. If it is an adjustable bra, make sure the hooks are clasped and the straps are attached. Use a lingerie bag if you have one. • D o not use fabric softener, which takes away the moisture-wicking properties. • Hang to dry. A dryer will ruin the band. For the long-term health of your breasts, invest in a high-quality sports bra. They might not be cheap, but they are worth the money in the long term. And if you are spending the money on one, then take the time to get a good fit and treat it with care.

Recovering From Lupus How Tori Black overcame her diagnosis The early signs were there. Forty-one-year-old Tori Black had dealt with occasional issues with her knees and swelling over the years, but it never prevented her from living a normal life. It was something she attributed to her days as a cheerleader in high school. But the symptoms started piling up: swelling, pain, lack of energy, loss of appetite, and skin rashes. She was hospitalized multiple times, and during one of those visits, she was finally set on the path to a diagnosis. “One day a nurse came in and asked if I had been tested for Lupus,” says Tori. “The nurse said she was confident I had Lupus because she had it herself and could see the initial symptoms in me, including a butterfly-shaped rash that was developing on my face.” In May 2006, tests confirmed that Tori indeed had Lupus. Then age 29, she began her journey of learning to live with the disease. She was placed on medication and bedridden for almost a year. When she got back on her feet, she was ready to get her symptoms under control. Tori began incorporating light exercises into her weekly regime. Last year she reached out to personal trainer Roland Genesy at Transforming Bodies. He developed a rigorous fitness plan and nutrition plan that removed beef and pork from her diet. Tori cut out fast food, processed food, soda, sugar, and dairy from her diet completely. She sticks to lean meats, fruits, and vegetables. Within three months of training with Roland three days per week, she lost 16 pounds. “More important than the weight loss was that I felt good and strong on the inside for the first time in 12 years.” Tori went back to her doctor, who informed her that her Lupus had gone into remission. After monitoring her for two more months, he took her off her medication in January 2018. “I couldn’t believe I had overcome Lupus by changing what I ate and sticking to a workout routine. By changing my lifestyle, I improved my health!” Inspired by her transformation, Tori went on to receive her Fitness Nutrition Certification through NASM so she could learn more about properly fueling her body. She’s added Piyo to her fitness routine and recently became a certified instructor through Beachbody Fitness. Tori still weight trains with Roland three days per week. The alternate days are dedicated to cardio including walking, jogging, and cycling. “I incorporate yoga into my workout routine as often as possible because it is important to stretch the muscles when you weight train,” she says. Now in remission, Tori wants to share her story to help others who suffer from Lupus. “I have not been on social media much, but I plan to use Instagram to connect with others who are suffering. I hope my story is an inspiration.”

Mighty Mom How Brooke Pomerenk juggles family and fitness Brooke Pomerenk and her husband, Steven, have two daughters, ages eight and 11. Brooke focused less on the gym and taking care of herself and more on raising her two beautiful girls when they were young. However, she eventually had a wake-up call and knew it was time to get back in shape. Brooke, 38, had played competitive sports since she was a kid but eased herself back into physical activity with group fitness classes at Lifetime Fitness. She found the camaraderie of the classes more compelling than competing. She says, “I thought to myself, ‘Why not get paid to work out?’” Through AFAA, she became certified to teach group fitness. In addition, she became a certified personal trainer. Brooke currently teaches kickboxing and different strength-cardio classes at Germantown Athletic Club. For her own

workouts, she likes to mix it up between hot yoga, kickboxing, strength-cardio classes, and running. Through her journey with fitness, Brooke has learned to balance her family and taking care of herself. On a typical day, she teaches in the morning after dropping her girls off at school. Afterward comes mom duties like homework, extracurriculars, and making meals. “It’s easy to get caught up in the routine of being a mom, but we have to make time for ourselves.”

“Working out makes me a better mom, releases endorphins, and relieves stress.” For her and her family, Brooke emphasizes nutrition. “My kids joke that we have chicken and broccoli every night, but it’s kind of true.”

While they eat healthy during the week, they splurge a little on the weekend. Some of their favorite places to eat out are Las Delicias, Huey’s, and Memphis Pizza Café. Brooke says there are healthy options at nearly every restaurant. Fitness isn’t just something she does on her own. Brooke, her husband, and her daughters also work out as a family. They go on bike rides on the Greenline, and sometimes her kids join her at the gym. “Setting a good example for them is important to me, and I want them to lead active, healthy lives.” Brooke encourages other moms to find a balance between work, family, and self-care. She highly recommends starting with a group fitness class. “A lot of women are intimidated by the gym, but group classes can be the best place to start because you meet other people and have accountability. The people in your classes can become like family.”

Suffering in Silence Mollie Walker’s Infertility Journey Mollie and Taylor Walker just celebrated their daughter’s third birthday on Easter. However, getting to that point wasn’t easy. Once the Walkers decided they were ready to be parents, it took them a year and a half to conceive.

Mollie Walker and daughter Lawson Grace

Mollie, 30, learned she doesn’t ovulate on her own and took the advice of Dr. Jason Williams of Memphis Obstetrics & Gynecological Association (MOGA). She tried Clomid, an ovulatory enhancer. Just one month later, they found out they were pregnant with their daughter, Lawson Grace Walker, who was born April 1, 2015. The couple started trying for their second child in November 2016, and Mollie became pregnant within the first month. “We went in for an ultrasound at 7-8 weeks and found out I had miscarried,” she says. They continued trying to get pregnant and again turned to Clomid for help, however, Mollie ended up having a second miscarriage in 2017. Anxious to expand their family and looking for answers, Mollie made an appointment with Dr. Amelia Bailey at Fertility Associates of Memphis. “Dr. Bailey was wonderful and thorough. We found out that I have a blood-clotting disorder, which could have caused the miscarriages,” Mollie says.

“Many women struggle with infertility in silence or feel embarrassed. I want them to know that there are support groups and resources.” After trying several medications and taking daily shots for her blood-clotting disorder, Mollie and Taylor learned they were pregnant again. They will welcome their son, Noah Daniel Walker, to the world in August 2018. I can’t say enough positive things about Dr. Williams (MOGA) and Dr. Bailey (Fertility Associates of Memphis). They were with me every step of the way and kept a close eye on my baby and me.” Mollie’s journey to motherhood opened her eyes to the number of women suffering from fertility issues. She is active in Memphis Friends Through Infertility, a Facebook group that brings together women as a support system for each other during their journeys with infertility. “Many women struggle with infertility in silence or feel embarrassed. I want them to know that there are support groups and resources. It has been amazing to see the number of women who have said they’re struggling, too,” Mollie says, “It’s important for women to know that they shouldn’t give up and they are not alone.” She recommends that families explore fertility options that might be covered by their employers. Molly has become an advocate for fertility coverage in the workplace.

Kellyn Quinn Lives Gluten-Free and Shame-Free Kellyn Quinn, 27, can be found at ATC Fitness in Collierville seven days a week, often twice a day. She learned from an early age how important it is to take care of her health, which began with an accident in high school. Sensitive to needles, Kellyn left the doctor’s office feeling lightheaded and passed out in the waiting area. Her head hit a metal table, and she fractured her skull. She stayed in the hospital for two weeks. Because of her sensitivity to light, she was homeschooled for the rest of high school. Kellyn got a fresh start studying marketing at the University of Memphis. With encouragement from her sorority sisters, she became a plus-sized model with Allure as her main employer. “I’ve never been small,” Kellyn says, “but I learned modeling was still something I could do and something I love.” Modeling was a great job for her as a student. It allowed her to travel to new places like New York, Las Vegas, and Atlanta. However, it was difficult being in an industry that didn’t foster a healthy body image. “It was also hard,” Kellyn recalls. “A lot of the models didn’t eat. Being around tiny people and former beauty pageant contestants who drank water instead of feeding themselves was challenging. I still ate and took care of myself though.” Recovering from a brain injury only a few years prior, Kellyn understood the importance of taking care of her body. Despite the pressure to be a certain size, modeling gave her a strong sense of self-confidence. In 2015, in the midst of her modeling career, Kellyn began having severe stomach pains and felt sick almost on a daily basis. After several misdiagnoses, she learned she has celiac disease—an inability to process gluten. “A gluten intolerance makes you sick, but celiacs disease destroys your intestines. Eating just a little on accident makes me very ill and fatigued,” she says. Kellyn had to cut out everything with even the faintest traces of gluten, including certain shampoos, makeup, and perfumes. Although she had gained weight prior to her diagnosis, she lost it as soon as she cut out gluten because her body could finally absorb nutrients properly. She encourages anyone facing stomach issues to get tested for celiac disease. “I feel so much better knowing what was making me sick. I have more energy and feel like I can fully live now.” Eventually, she ended her modeling career to become the marketing and event manager at Harley Davidson. Even though she isn’t a model anymore, she still faces pressure from others to be thinner. “I love the way I look and my husband does too. I don’t go to the gym to lose weight. I’m not putting on a show for anyone.” Her main advice on staying healthy is for people to take care of themselves and not give in to pressure to be a certain way. “It’s all about pleasing yourself and not other people.”

May is Celiac Disease Awareness Month. For more information visit Celiac.org. 22

I swim with the Nuber YMCA Masters swim group and cannot think of a better group of people to train with. We are all so different but share the same love of swimming. Coach Kelsey brings out the best in everyone.

If I were stranded on a deserted island, I would bring goggles so I could swim around the island, nail polish because I like pretty hands, and a permanently cold pillow.

7

2

I am a self-proclaimed, undiagnosed Oreo addict. Don’t laugh… I am so un-fancy.

I recently ran the Hardwood Dash for Disabilities 5K. I have always wanted to “push” someone (in a stroller) who is unable to run and give them the opportunity to experience a race. We placed 3rd in our age group!

8 I was running St. Jude marathon many years ago, and as I ran through the hospital campus, I saw someone holding a sign that read, “Run because you can.” There are so many people who cannot do what they love (for many different reasons), and I am grateful every single day that I am able to fulfill my passions..

3 Being able to represent Team USA in Canada last year was an experience of a lifetime. Being around like-minded people from all around the world was almost surreal. My Ironman races also left me with unforgettable memories.

5

I love the feeling of accomplishing a difficult race or workout. Successfully pushing myself outside of my comfort zone is such a reward. In addition, the camaraderie, support, and kindness of athletes have led to many close friendships.

Watching my fitness improve with each daily workout keeps bringing me back for more. Having a race on the calendar keeps me accountable and dedicated to the process. I love the journey.

I am a member of the Running Republic. My most recent WW events were the St. Jude Half Marathon, Spartan Stadium Sprint (Arlington, TX), and Spartan Super (Lanier Islands, GA).

I would love to have a go at the Spartan Beast race this year.

6 I live every day to the fullest and embrace simply being healthy and alive with my loved ones near.

2 My first marathon, April 2013 in Nashville, was my most memorable. There was heavy rain, wind, and endless hills. Not to mention, my stress fracture wasn’t fully healed. I remember hearing a runner tell his buddy, “Hey man we’re halfway there.” I looked up and we had just passed the mile 6 marker. They were running the half marathon! At that moment I realized it was going to be a wet, long, and humbling experience.

7 My favorite local restaurant is Folk’s Folly. I usually order the petite filet mignon, baked potato, and iced tea.

8 I have an inability to say no to pizza—especially Chicago deep dish. Sadly, apple pies are not safe around me either.

3 What I love most about running is that it gives you a reason to get out of the house and explore the city, parks, and trails every day. Running gives you a chance to clear your mind of the daily stressors.

9 My personal motto is Psalm 118:6 “The Lord is on my side; I will not fear. What can man do to me?”

4 Every morning when I wake, I think of the many people who are not able to walk, run, or exercise for various reasons. With that in mind, I have a constant spark to stay active.

Shining a Light on Food Allergies By Blair Mize, MS, RDN, CSSD, LDN

When my eight-month-old son started fussing as I ate peanut butter crackers, I didn’t think twice about holding him in my lap while I finished my snack, but within an hour, he was in the emergency room with symptoms of anaphylaxis. Fast-forward a few years, we ended up in the ER again even though the owner of a bakery promised the muffin my son ate was free of his food allergens. It wasn’t until food allergies personally touched my loved ones that I grasped the impact they can have on a person’s life and the lives of those around them. Food Allergy Awareness Week is May 13-19, and this year’s theme is “Shine a Light on Food Allergies.” Here are eight ways to illuminate your awareness of and sensitivity to food allergies.

1

Ask guests about food allergies prior to planning food-centered events.

I remember purchasing birthday cupcakes with peanut butter icing only to find out that a guest had a peanut allergy. Now, as a parent, it hurts to hear my little boy say, “Today was Susie’s birthday, and I didn’t eat any cake.” It’s always a kind gesture to ask about food allergies when hosting a dinner party or to notify parents of upcoming birthday treats at school.

2

Recognize the symptoms of an allergic reaction.

Mild-to-moderate symptoms may include one or more of the following: hives, redness of skin, itching in mouth or ears, GI distress, sneezing or nasal congestion, or coughing. Severe symptoms include difficulty swallowing, wheezing, shortness of breath, loss of consciousness, weakness, confusion, and/or swelling of lips, tongue, or throat that blocks breathing.

3

Understand that food allergies are serious & potentially lifethreatening.

After hearing about my family members’ food allergies, people often ask, “Are they serious?” Allergic reactions can be different with each exposure to an allergen; therefore, there are no mild or severe food allergies—only mild to severe reactions. All food allergies are serious and must be taken seriously.

4

28

Be supportive, understanding, and a good listener.

Food allergies are not a choice! Since eating is woven into so many aspects of life, food allergies can have a significant emotional impact, including added stress and anxiety for the individual and his or her loved ones. Be sensitive to challenges at holidays or the disappointment of having to avoid certain foods or restaurants. This is a daily occurrence for individuals with allergies.

Wash your hands before and after handling or consuming food to prevent the transfer of food allergens.

5

While you may not be directly affected, for someone with food allergies, even a trace of their allergen could be deadly. I’ll never forget eating sushi, brushing my teeth, and kissing my husband goodnight only to realize my goodnight kiss caused him to be up all night with what we later discovered was an allergic reaction to shellfish.

6

Find the silver lining to food allergies!

Focus on all the foods a person with food allergies can eat. Despite the limitations of allergies, “side effects” may include more dinners at home with family, increased kitchen creativity, and more focus on non-food aspects of celebrations and social gatherings.

7

Spring into action!

Make the world safer (and more fun) for people with food allergies by participating in the Teal Pumpkin Project at Halloween, hosting food-free Easter egg hunts, making a donation to food allergy research, or walking in a Food Allergy Heroes Walk.

8

Utilize food allergy resources.

Check out the Food Allergy Alliance of the Mid-South (FAAMidsouth.org) for additional resources, food allergy support, education, advocacy, and fellowship here in Memphis and surrounding areas.

Honey Mustard Chicken Chopped Salad By Andrea LeTard

All salads are a good option when it comes to healthy eating, but a loaded chopped salad makes the perfect hearty meal. By chopping the ingredients together, the salad shrinks so more greens, protein, and veggies can be packed in. Plus, it means there’s a little taste of everything in each bite. 4 servings

SHOPPING LIST q 1 /2 loaf whole-grain bakery bread (not pre-sliced) q 1 Tbsp olive oil q K osher salt and freshly cracked pepper q 1 /2 cup honey q 1 /2 cup Dijon mustard q 2 lemons – juiced q 2 Tbsp low-fat mayonnaise q 4 oz fat-free feta cheese q 1 tsp liquid smoke q 1 2 cups spinach q 2 rotisserie-cooked chicken breasts – cubed (skin and bones discarded) q 2 Granny Smith apples – cubed q 1 large cucumber – seeded and cubed q 1 small red onion – sliced q O ptional: 4–6 slices bacon – cooked and crumbled

CROUTONS

DRESSING

CHEESE

BUILD THE SALAD

Heat oven to 400F. Cut bread into ½-inch cubes. On a sheet pan, toss them with olive oil, ½ teaspoon salt, and ¼ teaspoon pepper. Spread out evenly and bake for about 10–15 minutes until golden. Store in a container until ready to use.

In a mason jar or container, add the honey, mustard, lemon juice, mayo, and a dash of salt and pepper. Shake until smooth and combined.

Keep the feta cheese in the container you bought it and add the liquid smoke. Shake together until well combined. Store the dressing and cheese in the refrigerator until ready to use.

In four separate salad bowls, add an even amount of spinach, chicken, apple, cucumber, onion, (optional) bacon, croutons, and feta. One at a time, dump each salad onto a cutting board and add 1-½ to 2 tablespoons of dressing. Chop together using a large chef’s knife. Scoop salad back into the bowl and serve.

Abdu brings minimally invasive hope to women’s care

R

arely does a day go by that A. Ben Abdu, MD, isn’t amazed at the strength of his female patients. Dr. Abdu focuses on minimally invasive gynecological surgeries at Regional One Health. His training focused on advanced laparoscopy, minimally invasive female pelvic medicine and reconstructive surgery, vaginal surgery, tubal reversals, female urology and pelvic pain medicine. He primarily works out of Regional One Health’s East Campus, which houses a hub of super sub-specialty women’s services including minimally invasive GYN surgery, urogynecology and reproductive medicine. It’s there that Dr. Abdu interacts with patients who never cease to amaze him by their resiliency to continue on despite pelvic issues. “I think women are amazing and innovative in their approach to their problem,” he said. “Women find unique ways to deal with their problems and live with them. They think it’s just part of aging. They’re thinking, ‘I’m 56, I’ve had three kids and it’s just par for the course.’ No ma’am, it’s not par for the course. It always blows my mind and I say to them, ‘You know I can fix that?’ It makes me in awe of women.” Dr. Abdu works with women experiencing a range of pelvic issues that have been undiagnosed or inadequately treated. Those issues include chronic pelvic pain, history

The one thing I can give at the end of the day is my 100 percent guarantee that I’m meticulous, and I give the care to my patients that I would expect for a family member. DR. BEN ABDU of endometriosis, painful periods, pain during intercourse, leaking urine or a vaginal bulge. Dr. Abdu also is the only surgeon in Memphis who does tubal reversal procedures robotically. Dr. Abdu’s laparoscopic approach is a low-risk, minimally invasive procedure. “I’m here to help,” he said. “I love what I do and I love Memphis. I say this to a lot of patients and I say it sincerely. There are no guarantees in medicine. But the one thing I can give at the end of the day is my 100 percent guarantee that I’m meticulous, and I give the care to my patients that I would expect for a family member.”
