Menopause Mayhem Hormone Replacement Therapy to Make Aging Easier Imagine if the news headline read, “Dozens Die on Flight Because of Hot Flash.” That’s what I thought of recently when I was trapped in an airplane because the door was jammed. The flight attendant admitted to her coworker that she had a hot flash when she went to open the exit. Menopause strikes again! We passengers were also having a hot flash because there was no circulating air in the cabin. A maintenance man entered from the service entrance and came to our rescue. He was able to jolt the door open with the help of someone on the other side. Menopause and its related symptoms can be life altering for some women. A friend used to joke that you lose a brain cell with every hot flash. Unlike previously thought, brain cells can regenerate, which is called neuroplasticity. Hormones (like estrogen), good fats, low sugar intake, no processed foods, and exercise all play a role in keeping the brain functioning healthfully for a long time. Neuropsychologist Dr. Pauline Maki said to the American Psychological Association, “Hormone replacement therapy may protect against age-related cognitive decline and against Alzheimer’s disease, but it doesn’t look particularly hopeful as a treatment for Alzheimer’s.” Dr. Maki and fellow researcher Dr. Susan Resnick recently published results in the journal Neurobiology of Aging that estrogen users, compared to non-estrogen users, showed increased blood flow over two years in the hippocampus (important for verbal memory) and other brain regions known to be part of a memory circuit that are impaired early in Alzheimer’s disease. The use of estrogen therapy in the perimenopausal and postmenopausal periods has been shown in several clinical trials to help women maintain a premenopausal level of cognitive function and help brain fog that women commonly complain of during the transition time.
6
Despite some beliefs, studies suggest that estrogen treatment, a form of hormone therapy, can have a positive effect on memory and the risk for Alzheimer’s disease when initiated early during a “window of opportunity.” Bioidentical hormones (estrogen, progesterone, and testosterone) that are identical to what your body currently makes (or made), can have benefits such as improved quality of life and relationships, while possibly
helping with cognitive function. Speak with your doctor to see if bioidentical hormone replacement is right for you. The McDonald Murrmann Center for Wellness and Health and Center for Laser and Aesthetics practice have specialized in bioidentical hormone therapy for over 20 years and continue to stay on the cutting edge of the field. May your plane or your life never be grounded due to the mayhem of menopause!

HE ALTH+WELLNESS By Gregory Burana, MD
Infertility Explained Many have a friend or family member who has struggled to conceive or stay pregnant. Often, she will have irregular cycles or is unsure if she is ovulating. She and her partner have likely tried to get pregnant for many months, maybe years. Approximately 10%–15% of the population has issues with infertility. Evaluating infertility is unique because it involves a couple rather than an individual. It is defined as the inability for a couple to conceive after 12 months of regular intercourse without the use of contraception. If the woman is 35 years or older, then infertility is defined at six months.
How does pregnancy occur? In the monthly menstrual cycle, ovulation occurs 14 days prior to the next cycle. For example, if your cycle length is 28 days, then you will ovulate on day 14. If your cycle length is 35 days, then you will ovulate on day 21. This releases an egg that moves into the fallopian tubes. If a woman has intercourse around ovulation, then the egg and sperm meet in the fallopian tube where fertilization occurs. The fertilized egg moves through the tube into the uterus where it attaches and grows. Infertility results if there is a problem with any of these steps.
What causes infertility? Many factors may cause infertility. It is estimated that female factors are the cause one-third of the time and male factors about one-third of the time. A combination of factors in both partners is responsible for remaining couples. Many times, no cause is identified, resulting in unexplained infertility. Below are the common reasons for infertility. • L ack of or irregular ovulation is very common, especially with polycystic ovary syndrome, a condition that causes increased androgen levels and multiple cysts on the ovaries. Women may notice abnormal menstruation or male pattern hair growth. • P roblems with the male testes that affect sperm development and function. A semen analysis can help identify these issues. • A dvancing age is a major factor that causes egg quantity and quality to decline. Healthy couples in their 20s or early 30s have a 25%–30% chance of becoming pregnant in any single menstrual cycle. This percentage declines beyond a women’s early 30s and more rapidly in the late 30s. The chance of a woman getting pregnant falls to around 10% per menstrual cycle by age 40. • P ermanent scarring of the fallopian tubes from prior surgery, sexually transmitted diseases, and endometriosis can prevent the sperm and egg from joining. • L ifestyle factors causing women to be underweight or overweight can affect ovulation and make it difficult to conceive. • S moking, heavy drinking, marijuana use, and exposure to other toxins can decrease sperm count and movement. • C hronic diseases such as lupus, diabetes, and thyroid disorders. • E xposure to chemotherapy can affect the quantity and quality of eggs and sperm. • U terine abnormalities such as a septum, fibroids, or a polyp can make it difficult for an embryo to implant and grow. This increases the risk of miscarriage and can be causes for recurrent miscarriages. Be aware that despite the stresses and hardships of infertility, most couples can be treated. It may require lifestyle changes, medication, surgery, or assisted reproductive technologies. If you have not been able to get pregnant after trying for a year or have any questions on preparing for pregnancy, see your doctor for an evaluation and to discuss potential treatments.

HE ALTH+WELLNESS By Tegan Reeves, RYT, PHD
Turn Back Time Mindfulness to Reduce and Reverse Aging As a yoga teacher and professor, health and wellness are central components of my work. Understanding the nature of aging and how choices influence it is important. My goal is to hone in on what we can control and how and why certain techniques work.
This table includes awareness, meditation, and breathing exercises for different types of physical activity. Seek out teachers and resources in your local community to continue cultivating a practice. Awareness
Meditation
Breath
Runners
Feel each step Leave the headphones at home on your next short run and concentrate on how much you can take in.
Open-Focus Acceptance Set an alarm for 3–11 minutes, allow thoughts and feelings to come and go.
Forceful Exhalation Take a long inhale and 10 strong, short exhales. Repeat about 10 times.
Strength Trainers
Grounding In between sets or intervals, take a moment to close your eyes and feel the connection of your feet or seat to the ground.
Progressive Relaxation/Body Scan Lying down, bring your attention to your feet, squeeze them, and then feel them relax as if they were melting into the ground. Progress up the legs, torso, arms, face, etc.
Three-Part Breath Inhale by filling the belly and waist first, then the ribs, then the chest. Reverse it on the exhale, compressing the chest, ribs, then belly.
Meditation is a central focus in many studies looking at wellness, health, resilience, aging, and much more. There is an overwhelming amount of books, videos, workshops, and apps available to help cultivate a mindfulness practice. The important thing is to keep it daily, not necessarily difficult or even structured. Just as we practice dental hygiene, mental hygiene is also important. A short daily practice, just like brushing and flossing, helps the mind and body last longer.
ClassGoers
Check-ins Set a goal of five times during class to notice how fast or slow you are breathing, what you are thinking, and how you are feeling.
Yoga Nidra Check out a local Nidra class or look it up on YouTube before bed.
Triangle Breath Inhale for 3–5 counts, exhale for 3–5 counts, hold the breath for 3–5 counts, then repeat.
Focused meditation sharpens brain function by flossing out mental and emotional buildup. Adding in breathing techniques brushes the vagus nerve, strengthening the autonomic nervous system and the response to stress.
ThrillSeekers
Sensing Immediately before and after an activity, pick a sensation to focus on (sight, sound, touch). Take at least 30 seconds to feel that sensation fully and notice any differences.
Meta Imagine yourself safe, happy, and peaceful. Then imagine a friend or family member feeling safe, happy, and peaceful. Then imagine your community or the world safe, happy, and peaceful.
Alternate Nostril Breathing Plug the right nostril and breath in through the left. Switch to plug the left nostril and breath out through the right. Keep the left closed and inhale through the right, then switch sides to exhale. Repeat.
Many breakthroughs in science over the last decade can help unravel how to reverse the effects of bad environments, bad genes, and even time itself. Cell regeneration, brain elasticity, and how bodies respond to stress are important components. There’s empirical evidence for the effects of awareness, meditation, and intentional breathing in reversing the aging process. And these studies don’t just show observed or reported results, there is evidence of the impact on the cellular level. A ground-breaking example of this is recent research on telomere length; a telomere is the part at the end of a chromosome which aids in replication and stability of the chromosome. Researchers compared the DNA of Zen meditators with people who had not practiced meditation. They found meditators had longer telomeres and a smaller percentage of short telomeres in individual cells. Telomeres protect cells/chromosomes, but the telomere region shortens with age. This is tangible evidence that mindfulness practices influence aging.
Researchers at Colombia University have shown specific breathing techniques can improve performance in elite athletes and resilience in people with high stress. They suggest it’s more than just creating an optimal environment for gas exchange during breathing because of the element of intentional awareness. Intentional awareness in the present moment allows us to strengthen our ability to think before responding. In her book, Counterclockwise, Ellen Langer reveals how attentional awareness can actually reverse signs of aging. Langer speaks of mindfulness as a state of being aware of one’s surroundings and movement. Dan Siegal expands on this in his book, Aware.
Even for just a few minutes a day, intentional awareness, attention, and breathing promote a healthy mind and body. When done consistently, these practices create an optimal environment for cell regeneration, neural integration, vagal tone, and gas exchange with the additional benefit of feeling good. Research and resources cited in this article are available through the author.

Yoga Skin
Look Lit from Within
What is Yoga Skin? It’s the newest makeup trend sweeping Instagram, created by U.K.-based makeup artist Sara Hill. Don’t think of red blotchy skin after hot yoga; it’s more like the lustrous shine of an opal. Skin looks bright, hydrated, and radiant like your inner peace is shining from the inside out. You don’t even have to be an avid yogi to achieve it!
How do you get it? 4/15/19, 7)10 PM Page 1 of 1
Refer to this simplified step-by-step guide for this gorgeous look. It’s quick and easy, SHOP Buy SELECT and looks good with just a little mascara or played up with a dramatic eye or lip.

Step 1

Start by applying a primer to fresh, clean skin. I like to use Hangover Primer by Too Faced. It hydrates skin with a coconut water-infused formula. After the primer dries, conceal blemishes or darkness under the eyes.

Combine the ingredients in your hands. The warmth of your skin helps the makeup melt into your skin. Normally, you would apply with a brush or beauty blender, but not for this look. Apply with your hands. The stimulation from your fingertips increases circulation to help reduce puffiness. If you require more coverage, let this layer dry before adding another.

Yoga Skin
Create your mixture in the palm of your hand. Start with a lightweight foundation that will make up half. I like to use MAC Face and Body Foundation for its consistency. Then add 3–4 drops of Iconic’s liquid Illuminator to the foundation. Next, add 2 drops of face oil like Farsali Rose Gold Elixir. If you have combination or oily skin, skip this step. Take a spatula and scrape off a little bit of a highlight powder, SHOP Buy SELECT like BECCA Shimmering Skin Perfector. This one is a favorite because it’s not glittery.
Step 4 Finish the look with a cream blush or bronzer. My go-to is NARS The Multiple. When choosing a color, mimic the lightly flushed look after the warmup of a good yoga class.
Adding this inner peace-inspired routine will bring your “no-makeup” makeup look before&after-7.jpg to the next level or add a soft glow to your glammed up night look.

Rebuilding Her Body and Mind at the Memphis Kroc Center Thirty-year-old Rehana Rashid started in a place of darkness before she found light. She’s a decade-long domestic abuse survivor who’s found wholistic wellness through balancing her physical health and a sound mind. Rehana once lived in fear and silence, suffering frequent abuse and injuries around her neck and throat. Through repeated physical torment, she had learned that her voice lacked value. “Life was nerve-racking and full of anxiety. I wasn’t living for myself and became numb to my body and my surroundings,” she says. In 2015, while removing herself from 10 years of harm and mistreatment, Rehana found the Memphis Kroc Center, where she has learned to reclaim her strength and voice. Now she prioritizes her mental health and cares for her body with compassion. “I wanted to start speaking a true narrative about wellness. Depression, addiction, and abuse are real for so many people. What’s going on inside the body is really what’s affecting the outside,” she says. The Ray & Joan Kroc Community Center has fitness classes, an aquatics center, and worship programs. It also provides childcare for its members in an extensive facility that will expand even further after renovations this summer. Rehana joined with a simple fitness goal: lose weight and find strength. She had gained nearly 50 pounds from her mental and physical trauma. The Kroc Center had the resources to help her accomplish her goal and a large network of caring community members. “On my first day, I was still very critical of myself and felt I didn’t belong. However, everyone was encouraging and welcoming. I made friends with the instructors and began hanging out with them outside of classes,” Rehana says. She attended Redbirds games, dinners, and church services with her new support system. “That community helped me rebuild a belief in myself and fostered a positive inner voice when I needed it the most,” she says. After one year of membership, Rehana was radiating joy. Her background in dance and
passion for creative movement fueled a fire to help other community members find power and strength in their own bodies. Rehana developed and began teaching the Kroc Center’s first barre fitness program in 2016. She continued her training to become an Experienced Registered Yoga Teacher (E-RYT), Children’s Yoga Teacher (CYT), and Prenatal Yoga Teacher (PYT) through Yoga Alliance. “Rebuilding strength in your physical body and being able to analyze when it’s in a state of stress is a tool for learning how to process any kind of traumatic event without judging those past emotions or experiences.” During a final reflection segment at the end of her classes, participants recite a mantra that affirms each person’s worth and validity, free of judgment. They either speak these mantras to themselves in the mirror or Rehana speaks them for the group as they are in meditation or rest. She hopes that every participant can see him or herself with unconditional love. As during any recovery, Rehana still has setbacks. She used to struggle to keep her own negative voice at bay. “I couldn’t look at myself in the mirror and tell students to believe in themselves when I didn’t believe in me,” she says. “Our Fitness Director told me, ‘Rehana, you can do this, and you’re going to speak truth and love to other people until you believe in it yourself.’” Rehana’s true passion is the well-being of her students. “I am humbled to witness the healing and transformation in other men and women who have a negative inner voice or trauma of their own.” In 2017, she was promoted to the Marketing and Communications Manager at the Kroc Center, and she continues to teach classes. Her work allows her to combine her passions for creativity and empowering community members in an environment she considers spiritual and authentic. “I get to come in each morning and plan how we’re going to market our brand and programs, and in the evening I get to live that out and see the impact we make in our community.”
“What’s going on inside the body is really what is affecting the outside.” — Rehana Rashid

Stepping Off the Scale with Natalie Hurst
In 2015, Natalie Hurst suffered an unexpected stroke that made her pause and reflect. Though she has had no residual speech or movement damage, the experience encouraged her to take a closer look at her diet and begin a new journey with Pilates. Today, 36-year-old Natalie spends her days climbing at Memphis Rox, instructing community classes at the Core Collective on Broad, and chasing after her five-year-old daughter, Evelyn (with another on the way).
16
Where did your fitness journey begin? The very first leg of it began with my older sister, who was a runner through high school. Although I don’t use it as my main workout anymore, if I need cardio, I incorporate a run here and there. I really changed my attitude and goals after I had Evelyn and started at Memphis Rox. My philosophy shifted from skinny to strong. That made a world of a difference. I have begun to make measurable goals like accomplishing a certain climb or hitting a certain number of push-ups or pull-ups. It’s not good for your head to weigh yourself constantly or count calories. Now, I don’t need a scale; I measure by climbing, which I see as a healthier obsession.
What inspired you to start climbing? My husband worked at Outdoors Inc. when we met. He taught me how to do their small climbing wall, and he bought me my first pair of climbing shoes. When we came to Memphis and heard Memphis Rox was opening, I knew as soon as I stepped in the door in March that I was hooked. The people there are amazing. Everyone learns your name and gets to know you. People aren’t afraid to help each other and give advice. There’s so much I love about climbing. One reason is that men and women are on the same field; I might have an advantage over someone who is taller or stronger than me. It’s a true community, but it’s also a solo sport. It’s not just about muscling through but planning and always thinking ahead.
"There's so much I love about climbing. One reason is that men and women are on the same field."
What does a typical week of exercise look like?
What foods are essential to your diet?
Why are you passionate about Pilates?
When I have it my way, I climb at least three times a week and workout (usually Pilates) five times a week. I always warm up before a session with some weights or cardio. Then I head into an hour-plus climb if I have the time. I just get so lost in it.
I follow a pescatarian diet. My staples are quinoa, yogurt, eggs, fruits, and veggies (especially broccoli). I always have almonds and carrots in my purse. If I’m on task, I’ll meal plan, and that gives me a lot of energy. If I’m training, I normally won’t go out to eat, but if I do, I try to be as good as possible because there’s going to be more salt and fat in restaurant food.
I consider it to be very mindful movement with strength built in. It’s not an easy workout, but it’s efficient and involves everything: core-strength, tone building, resistance work. You’re so much more aware of your body and tuned in with Pilates, which helps a lot with climbing.
What motivates you? What I love about fitness is that it’s always changing, so my goals range from doing a triathlon to getting more certifications or becoming a lead climber. My workouts are fun, and they give me the energy to keep up with my daughter. I’m motivated to stay healthy for my kids and be a good example to them of what a “strong mom” is. 17

How Ultrarunners Todd and Allison Barcelona Came Back from a Devastating Injury Imagine waking up in the emergency room in pain, unable to move, and with no idea why you were there. That’s where Todd Barcelona, 53, found himself four years ago. In a split second, another car cut in front of him and changed the trajectory of his life. Among his many injuries were a broken neck, a slashed artery, severed tendons, a broken leg, a crushed heel, and severe head trauma. After 10 days and multiple surgeries performed by Campbell Clinic specialists, his wife, Allison, was able to take him home. Prior to the accident, the Barcelonas were training for the St. Jude Marathon. The couple has been married for 32 years and has three children and a grandchild. They enjoyed church, family, and an active lifestyle. After the accident, Todd could barely stand with a walker. “I woke up in the hospital and my wife was by my side,” Todd recalls. “She stayed with me through all of this. On our first follow-up visit with the ortho surgeon, he told us I would never run again.” “He had to learn to re-use his legs,” Allison recalls. “Every step he took was painful.” After months of hard work and many hours on a stationary bike, Todd returned to his job as a line mechanic for Cadillac. However, the effects of his head injury and PTSD from the accident began to surface in dramatic ways. Once easygoing and agreeable, Todd became volatile, angry, and severely depressed. This radical personality change was hard for his family to bear.
After seeing Allison run, Todd decided to try. Both still remember that day. “It was very painful, but I wanted to see what I could do,” Todd says. At the end of a quarter mile of slow steps, he felt tears streaming down his face. Despite excruciating pain, he continued and built up more stamina with each session. He was determined to succeed, and his wife and running coach were behind him. As Todd’s body healed, his mental and emotional state improved. Before the accident, Todd and Allison ran separately because Todd ran much faster. Since the accident, they’ve stuck to running together. Under the direction of their coach, they ran their first 50K (31.7 miles) less than two years after the accident. Soon after, they completed a 50-miler. Now they run 100-milers together. Under their current training regimen, they run about 50 miles per week. Allison says that running together for hours has given them more opportunity to talk. That level of communication has made them grow closer. She also says they both love the new friends they have made among ultrarunners. “It’s a small group,” she explains. “You see the same people at the races. Ultrarunners are very positive, and the energy is contagious. In marathons, everyone is looking to cross the finish line faster. In ultrarunning, you’re side by side. You’re a team. You’re a family. We want everyone to cross that finish line.”
“I didn’t know how we could live the rest of our days like that,” Allison recalls. “But there was no way I was going to bail out.”
Todd’s gait and body have been permanently impacted by the accident, but those challenges haven’t kept him from completing a race.
One day, she received a letter from Regional One Health inviting them to participate in counseling for families of head trauma victims. “I believe that was God’s answer to my prayers about all the trials we were going through,” she says.
“The pain is still there, and I still deal with it,” he says, then adds, “The accident changed my perspective. I know now that we take things for granted. We take getting up every morning for granted. The reality is that anything can happen at any second.”
Counseling led Allison to start doing research on her own. She changed their diets by removing certain foods and sought activities that would create feelings of accomplishment and joy. Though she had learned about the mental and emotional benefits of running, she didn’t know whether or not it could ever be a possibility for Todd. With the help of coach Kevin Leathers, she decided to return to the sport herself.
Allison adds, “If anyone has a goal, they should go for it. Don’t say, ‘I want to climb a mountain.’ Start training!”
“I didn’t know what else do to,” she says. “Going back to running was a matter of survival for me. Todd 20
was in a state of anger and frustration. I had to stay strong and find a way to help him.”
Both of the Barcelonas say they never could have made this successful journey without faith. “God guides us, but we’re the ones who have to take the steps,” Todd says. “My Lord gets all the credit. I was a willing participant. His healing power put me back on my feet.”
“ The accident changed my perspective.” — Todd Barcelona

Road to Recovery Leads Back Home After a years-long battle with anorexia, 23-year-old Carolyn Mallett is celebrating recovery and her new career as a trauma nurse at Regional One hospital. In September 2014, Carolyn suffered an eating disorder relapse during her freshman year of college in Chattanooga that forced her into inpatient hospital care. “Everything was taken from me, and it was really overwhelming,” she says. “I was there for two and a half months, which helped get me back on my feet. I had dreams I wanted to follow that weren’t compatible with my condition.”
She returned to Memphis with her parents and completed a successful program at the Transformation Center for Outpatient Therapy. In the years since, she’s graduated with a degree in nursing from the University of Memphis and started an Instagram @thelittlehungrycaterpillar, which is devoted to helping young people who struggle with eating disorders. She posts regularly on mental health, ending the eating disorder stigma, and some of her favorite meals.
What was the inspiration behind @thelittlehungrycaterpillar? I originally used it as my own diary to keep myself accountable and stay on track. Slowly over time, I met all of these incredible people from all over the world who had been in the same place as me. It’s been really rewarding because I’ve had the opportunity to reach out when I needed advice and have been the person others can reach out to. I picture myself in that position, like the little girl I was in high school, and what I would want to say to her if I could go back.
What’s your daily diet, and how has it changed? I’ve gone through phases of everything: calorie-counting, Paleo, vegetarianism, and veganism. I decided this past year that I don’t need any of those labels anymore because they can lead to shame or guilt. For years I used to look up menus before I go out to eat, but now it’s so much more relaxed. I’m able to go out and pick what I want rather than what I feel like is necessary. That’s been a huge weight off my shoulders. Every fad diet I’ve tried has felt like I was missing something. Carbs, fats, and proteins are the three macronutrients that are essential for survival. Eating more of one doesn’t make me weak. It’s just a source of energy.
Cook at home or eat out on the town? Eat out because I love seeing what people can create. I love sushi and picking up ice cream with my boyfriend. If I’m at home, I always make sure I have a lot of sweet potatoes on hand. I eat smoothie bowls, I make a tofu scramble, I love salmon.
What are your fitness goals? I used to be very all or nothing and I’d have to workout every day. Now I work out four times a week, which is much more attainable. I’m cutting down on cardio and working on weightlifting. I just started climbing at Memphis Rox, which I love even though I’m terrified of heights. I love my original gym, Planet Fitness in Midtown, where I’m an ambassador. I’ve met many cool people there and the staff is like my family.
What motivates you? When I was at rock bottom, I couldn’t visualize what my future would look like, but now I’m inspired by the work I do as a nurse. Every day, I have the opportunity to make a difference in someone’s life. If I can’t do it for myself, I want to do it for the difference I can make. On those days when it’s difficult to take care of myself, I think about my work as a nurse and the kind of mother or wife I want to be one day.
22
“ I picture myself in that position, like the little girl I was in high school, and what I would want to say to her if I could go back.”
A huge thing for me has been my support system. My friends, family, and boyfriend have all been exceptional. Rather than bringing judgment or listening to the stereotypes of eating disorders, they really tried to understand where that piece of me was coming from. That’s made so much of a difference.

Fitness, Faith & Fertility Jennifer and Robert Daniel’s IVF Journey Jennifer and Robert Daniel, married six years, live a life of service. They rescue animals and have taken a number of mission trips to Nairobi through Be Free Revolution. They’ve gone so frequently, they have a close group of friend they call their “African family.” Despite their many friendships and a close-knit community at Highpoint Church, they still long for a family of their own. Jennifer, 36, and Robert, 49, started on their journey with in vitro fertilization (IVF) three years ago with Dr. Paul Brezina of Fertility Associates of Memphis. “We had all but lost hope when we went to him,” Robert says. “Now, after three years and four attempts, he’s like family to us.” “It’s been a complicated journey,” Jennifer says, “But it’s taught me a lot. I have always been a control freak, and in this situation, you learn pretty quickly you are not in control. I learned a lot about patience and a lot about faith.” Jennifer, who works in pharmaceutical sales, says that she spent the past year getting into the best possible shape before attempting to get pregnant again. “When I first started dating Robert, I made a point to tell him that I’m not into weighing my food, counting calories, or working out.” At the time, Robert was competing on the US Team in the National Sumo Federation. His influence has led her to kickboxing, cardio barre, and eventually weightlifting. Jennifer has been working with a trainer three times a week and never missed a day. She had to take a proactive approach because she knew that doctors would likely prohibit her from exercising during a pregnancy. 24
Being naturally slim, she admits that she was long careless about her diet. “Before we got married, I was literally eating icing out of a can,” Jennifer says. “My love for working and my dedication to my health out has definitely grown through being married to Robert.
I feel a lot better.” Robert, a bond broker, is now focused on competitive bodybuilding and is working on setting a world record in a strength and endurance event. The IVF journey is intensely demanding—physically, mentally,
“Life would be a lonely journey without support.”
and emotionally. It requires a plethora of drugs and hormones and administering shots to yourself at exact times. “If you don’t do things precisely, you can ruin any chance of it working. You have to make it a priority and be willing to cancel plans.” Despite following every protocol to the letter, the Daniels’ first three attempts failed. While some couples are quiet about IVF, Jennifer shared the details of her experiences with the public on Facebook. She sometimes hears from strangers who have sought her advice after reading her posts. “Sharing what I know means I’m able to help others who are also on this journey. It’s important to be open. I don’t believe anyone should feel they have to pretend that everything is fine if it isn’t.” Robert has been with Jennifer every step of the way. “I’ve gone to every one of her medical appointments. Those miscarriages broke her heart, and they broke mine too.” The couple decided that their fourth round of IVF would be their last attempt. “It’s a long process and a waiting game. Sometimes there were tears. We had to make the decision to go in with hope every time.” The Daniels will welcome a baby girl in September. Given the ups and downs of IVF, Jennifer encourages other women to join online communities for support. “The groups are worldwide,” she says, “They’re designed so women can join a group of women on the exact same timeline. Sharing is important. Life would be a lonely journey without support.” Robert says, “I lean heavily on God… Anyone strong enough to do this without faith must be incredibly strong.”

135 Pounds Lighter!
Mother-daughter duo Lisa Glover, 53, and Constance Anderson, 33, came to the Transformation Doctor in 2017 after being fed up with health issues stemming from their weight.
Mother and daughter team up to change their lives
In two years, the pair has lost a combined 135 pounds.
What jumpstarted your weightloss journey?
How has your health improved since then?
My health was spiraling backward, and my mom was concerned with issues like becoming pre-diabetic. I had also had high blood pressure since I was 13. My health continued to get worse with pain, nose bleeds, and other issues. It was getting out of hand.
Our health is great, and my blood pressure is wonderful. I don’t have any nose bleeds. Combined, we have lost at least 135 pounds, which is more than 60 pounds for each of us.
How did you end up at the Transformation Doctor?
We altered our diet, but really our whole approach to eating is different. If we want a cheat meal, we’ll have it, but it’s not like we’re going to have another one right away. We do walk, but mainly it’s our eating habits that have totally changed. We wanted to get that down first before focusing on exercise.
I did the research and was trying to find places for my mom and me to go. I came across the Transformation Doctor, and we stopped in on a Saturday. They were so welcoming. We met with the owner who talked to us about our situations, and we were sold from there. That was July 22, 2017.
Lisa & Constance lost a combined 135 lbs. 26
How has your lifestyle changed?
What does your diet look like? My mom has always been someone to try to count calories, but I don’t like it. When I introduced her to low carb, she thought she could get on board with it. We don’t eat bread or sugar or drink much else besides water. We eat a lot of vegetables, and I am now a pescatarian. My mom still eats meat, but more white meats like chicken and turkey.
What was your plan like with the Transformation Doctor? We started with a three-day detox, eliminating sugar, cheeses,
breads, etc. It was straight clean eating for three days with lots of spinach and green, leafy vegetables. Then we moved to the second phase and began to introduce certain foods back in. The last phase is where the lifestyle begins. You can eat the foods that were in phase two, but we just had to be careful with our carb intake. If we start to fall off a bit or feel a little off, we’ll still incorporate the detox into our lifestyle.
How has this changed your life? We feel like totally different people. This has been a wonderful experience being able to change our lifestyle, stick with it, and enjoy it.

CROSS-TRAIN: I enjoy weightlifting about six days a week. I mostly train in our home garage that my husband and I slowly built up. Or I’m at the gym at work on my lunch break.
NEXT CHALLENGE: I am training for the Running of the Rams 5K this May in Bartlett!

The Dangers of Diet Culture and Disordered Eating At least 30 million people of all ages and genders suffer from an eating disorder in the United States, and eating disorders have the highest mortality rate of any mental illness. Healthcare providers receive very little training in the identification and treatment of eating disorders. As a result, they are often overlooked and under-diagnosed until substantial physical and psychological complications develop.
How You Can Help
To further complicate matters, we live in diet culture. Our society places high value on being a certain size, weight, or shape rather than on actual health. Diet culture promotes the false notion that health equals thinness. It praises weight loss and rigid, restrictive (aka disordered) eating patterns as tools for health despite clear research that diets do not lead to sustainable health or weight loss. The result? Normalization of disordered eating patterns.
2. If you suspect a friend or loved one is struggling, express your concern without blame or criticism, but with sensitivity and compassion. Since accurate self-awareness is often absent and fears about seeking treatment can be high, do not be surprised if your loved one does not recognize their behaviors as a problem or the severity of their situation. Encourage the individual to seek help and begin treatment as soon as possible. Early intervention is associated with higher recovery rates.
Dieting is a major predictor of future eating disorders. When it comes to recognizing the potential signs, don’t be deceived by diet culture. Knowing these facts about eating disorders could prevent them and ultimately save lives…
3. Ditch Diet Culture. In doing so, you’ll likely improve your own sense of wellbeing and, in turn, help prevent eating disorders. A few ideas to get you started: Derail diet-related conversations. Don’t comment on people’s bodies, even if you think you’re giving them a compliment. Detox from diet-related social media and dig into accounts promoting body acceptance.
• P eople with strict diets are often praised for their willpower, their discipline, or for being “good,” but a person’s rigid or scrupulous eating pattern may actually be the beginning of an eating disorder.
1. K now the warning signs. For more information on specific emotional, behavioral, and physical signs and symptoms of eating disorders, visit the National Eating Disorder Association’s website: Nationaleatingdisorders.org.
• M ost people with an eating disorder are not underweight. A person’s physical appearance is not an indicator of whether or not they have an eating disorder. • P eople with eating disorders don’t always lose weight as a result of their disorder. Some people gain weight as a result of an eating disorder. • W eight cycling, which often results from going on and off various diets, could be an eating disorder in disguise. • N egative body image is common for individuals with eating disorders, but it is not universal. • T hough amenorrhea (the absence of one or more periods) may be common, especially in female athletes, it is not normal and should be addressed by a physician to prevent further medical complications. Screening for an underlying eating disorder is also necessary. • A low heart rate is often linked to and dismissed as athletic training and ability; however, a deeper look into the presence of other eating disorder signs and symptoms is often warranted.

Don't Be a Quitter! Skip the quick fixes & focus on long-term results The fitness industry thrives on quick fixes. We love the promise of fast results by making extreme changes for a short period of time. We are quick to commit to restrictive rules but don’t think much beyond what happens after that one week, 21 days, or one-month challenge. It’s common to give up after not seeing immediate results after a few weeks of hard work. We often go to extremes. If we can’t stick to zero carbs, then we eat all the carbs. If a new piece of gym equipment doesn’t deliver results, we give up on exercise altogether.
BUILDING LONG-TERM HABITS These habits can help you reach your immediate goals and maintain those changes in the future: Add more vegetables and protein to meals. Be aware of portion sizes. Learn how to grocery shop and prepare meals at home.
Quick fixes turn us into quitters. While we want to believe that we can make big sacrifices in order to achieve big changes in a short amount of time, that is rarely the case. If we do happen to lose weight, get that six-pack, or go down a new dress size, it rarely lasts long because those quick fixes don’t set us up with the tools we need to create lasting change.
Substitute meals out for meals at home. Create an environment that makes it easy to eat healthfully. Learn to eat meals mindfully and recognize feelings of hunger and fullness. Learn how to make the best choices when enjoying meals out. Be aware of the caloric content in different foods.
Whether the goal is losing body fat, building strength, getting faster, or improving health markers, the principles of successful behavior changes are the same. Spoiler alert: the answer isn’t a crash diet, a short timeline, or restrictive rules! Creating lasting results requires knowledge and skills that allow us to make small changes consistently over time. In other words, it requires creating good habits. This means forming habits that we don’t just stick to when we feel like it, but habits we practice diligently for an extended period of time. While results won’t always be immediate, it sets us up to create changes we can maintain moving forward. Before hopping on a new diet train, take a minute to think long term. Consider if it teaches valuable skills and habits that can be followed for more than a few weeks. Prioritizing positive habits over quick fixes not only helps us achieve results, but it helps us maintain those changes long term.
