New Hope For Knees The meniscus is a crescent shaped tissue pad located behind the knee. Each knee has two, a lateral and medial, that distribute the load between the upper body and leg. They are highly vulnerable to tearing for anyone physically active or who struggles with excess weight. Once damaged, the meniscus has limited ability to heal. OrthoMemphis is the only center in the region and one of 10 in the U.S. to participate in a clinical trial to help relieve persistent pain and make the “artificial meniscus” a reality.

When we make big, hard-to-reach goals, we set ourselves up for failure. Instead, start small and work at it little by little. Heart disease remains the leading cause of death in men and women, and prevention should be our number one priority. With just a few simple changes, we can lower our risk factors and achieve overall cardiovascular health. Physical activity is at the cornerstone of being heart healthy. However, we tend to confuse the need for physical activity with vigorous exercise. Any sort of aerobic activity improves our health, whether it’s walking the dog 30 minutes a day or simply choosing to take the stairs. Finding an exercise that best fits your personality and lifestyle will help you breathe easier and feel better.
When it comes to preventing heart disease, a primary care doctor can do most of the vascular screening and prevention. It’s important to monitor and control your cholesterol, blood pressure, and diabetes. If there are risk factors for vascular disease such as diabetes, smoking, high cholesterol, hypertension, or an early family history of coronary artery disease; the physician may refer you to a cardiologist for a screening evaluation. Cardiovascular disease is an increasing concern in children and adolescents due to higher rates of obesity, hypertension, and diabetes. Pediatricians can address this early by encouraging more physical activity and

Cosmetic lip augmentation is meant to enhance the patient’s natural beauty by enlarging and reshaping otherwise normal lips to improve their dimensional relation to the nose, teeth, and surrounding facial structures. According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, hyaluronic acid fillers like Juvederm and Restylane are the gold standard for plumping the inner body of the lip. Injections along the vermillion (lip line) border typically enhance the projection, or pout, of the lip. It can also partly erase small vertical lines surrounding the mouth. Injections in the body of the red lip enhance red lip volume. Depending on a patient’s specific anatomy, a combination of injection techniques are used during a procedure.
“Overzealous lateral injections can make your lips look unnatural and almost sausage-like. Technique is important, so I use micro-droplets,” notes Dr. Sadler, “The goal is to prevent lumps and create a smooth, uniform finish.” Most fillers absorb into the body over time, requiring additional injections to maintain the rejuvenation of the mouth. HITTING THE TRAILS

If you’re getting bored with your normal running route or just want a change of pace and scenery, it might be time to check out some local trails. The alternative terrain has grown in popularity in recent years as more runners ditch the pavement and opt for running in Mother Nature. In addition to the peace and serenity, trail running can be a good way for road runners to help avoid burnout and injury. The trails are generally easier on your body and can be a source of recovery from pounding the pavement. Hitting the trails just once a week can add variety into your routine. And in the summer, the trails can also help you escape and shield your skin from the hot Mid-south sun. Keep in mind that trail runs will typically be slower than your road runs as you navigate the terrain around you. Don’t worry about how fast you go, but instead keep an eye on your footing and enjoy the sights around you. Spending more time in the woods provides added stress relief, a taste of clean air, and some time to yourself without any distractions.
THINGS TO CONSIDER When running on the trails, carrying water and nutrition is a must. There usually aren’t any stops along the route (especially bathrooms), so it’s important to go in fully prepared. You should also let someone know where you’re headed and how long you intend to be gone, in case anything goes awry. Lastly, even if you usually don’t carry a phone on your runs, consider taking one on the trails in case of an emergency.
TRAIL SHOES A shoe with a more aggressive tread does better on the trails. However, since the trails in Memphis aren’t too rugged, a road shoe will typically get the job done. One of the most popular trail shoes around town as well as on the Appalachian Trail is the Brooks Cascadia. Montrail also makes several great models.

Though already acquaintances, Paul didn’t seek out Olivia until he needed her yoga expertise to enhance his running regimen. At her studio, the two locked eyes during a tree pose and have been a couple for the past three years. Together, they raise five children who keep them on their toes.
HOW THEY STAY FIT: Paul is an avid barefoot trail runner. Olivia has her yoga studio and practice, but also loves riding her bike on the Greenline and running trails with Paul. They also enjoy playing tennis together.
FAVORITE QUALITY ABOUT SIGNIFICANT OTHER: Paul: I really enjoy the way Olivia affects people’s lives in a positive way. Olivia: Paul is a phenomenal cook, and he also doesn’t mind doing the grocery shopping. We both appreciate a healthy meal and enjoy variety with what we eat.

Paul: I don’t compete in many races or track time and distance; I just enjoy being out on the trails for hours at a time and doing what my body feels like it needs to do. Olivia: I completed my E-RYT 500 in yoga, which is the highest level of training I can receive. Now I’m putting that into practice by training my students as well as teachers.
HOW DOES FITNESS HELP YOUR RELATIONSHIP? When we get irritated with each other, which isn’t often, we ask the other if they’ve been for a run or done yoga today. We understand the important of fitness for our physical and mental wellness.

For Jerrod, it was love at first sight as they passed each other on the street. He made a U-turn and they met in a parking lot. In the heat of the moment, Lakeicha forgot to put her car in park, and as their conversation began, her car started rolling away. That blunder would be the beginning of a 12 year marriage blessed with four beautiful children.
HOW THEY STAY FIT: Jerrod is a former college and professional Arena Football player. He stays active with weightlifting and recently got into Crossfit. Lakeicha is a long-distance runner who just completed her first full marathon at the St. Jude Marathon in December. Jerrod also trains her in weightlifting.
FAVORITE QUALITY ABOUT SIGNIFICANT OTHER: Jerrod: I love that Lakeicha allows me to always be myself. I don’t have to put on a façade or pretend to be someone I’m not. She also has a calm demeanor and makes me look good. Lakeicha: Jerrod’s ability to make me laugh is one of my favorite qualities about him. He’s also very intelligent and always has the answer to any question.

Jerrod: Working out is only 10% of being healthy; the other 90% comes from eating right and a consistent mindset. It’s like washing a car, you wouldn’t put Armor All on dirty tires. When you are eating clean and healthy, working out is just the detail! Lakeicha: Go hard or go home!
WHAT IS A FUN FITNESS DATE? Every Sunday after church, we go to the gym to do some lifting. It allows us time together away from our children. We work on our fitness and do a little flirting with each other. It’s also cheap!

HOW THEY STAY FIT: Justin enjoys performance-based sports such as running and Olympic weightlifting in addition to his work at CrossFit Hit and Run. Brandi also enjoys weightlifting and CrossFit, letting Justin write her fitness program. However, Justin is the runner between the two.
FAVORITE QUALITY ABOUT SIGNIFICANT OTHER: Justin: She is as loyal as they come. She’s also very determined and stubborn, which makes her a hard worker. Brandi: He is brutally honest and real. He’s softer than most people think, and he always tells the truth, sometimes to a fault.
FITNESS ACCOMPLISHMENTS: We’re really proud to have four food and fitness-related businesses up and running. It’s rewarding to see a healthy movement happening in Memphis and to be a part of it.

Healthy At Heart Ashley and Sally Pace always considered themselves a healthy couple. Ashley, who works in health risk management, would preach to his clients about the importance of getting out and moving. However, the Paces, who have been married for 18 years, got a wake-up call when they saw the documentary “Forks Over Knives.” It opened their eyes to how food significantly impacts our health. “We stopped eating red meat, and began following a more plant based diet,” they say, which helped Ashley lose 50 pounds over the next two years. Now he eats vegan, but allows fish. The college sweethearts stay active by practicing yoga together and going for bike rides with their 3-year-old son, William. “We love walking, especially since our son is getting to the age where he enjoys being active,” says Sally. The couple makes it a point to work out regularly and Sally takes Pure Barre classes.

The couple became involved with the American Heart Association because they wanted to support an organization that encourage healthy lifestyles. They’ve spent the past year leading the executive planning committee for the American Heart Association’s 40th Annual Heart Ball that takes place in Memphis on February 20th. “I’m looking forward to the event because I know there will be people who may not know all the hard facts about heart disease,” says Ashley. “It’s an opportunity to educate people about the breadth and seriousness of cardiovascular disease.” “It’s no secret that Memphis has been recognized for being an unhealthy community, but the American Heart Association’s work coupled with other initiatives within the city has made a great impact on getting people educated and active.” The Heart Ball will commemorate the success of the American Heart Association’s work over the past 40 years.

First race is in Oxford but the bigger challenge will be the Memphis in May Triathlon. I plan to do the Sprint and the Olympic distance challenges this year. FAVORITE FITNESS ACCOMPLISHMENT: Becoming a Green Beret. As Barry Sadler sang, 100 men will test today, but only three win the Green Beret. No doubt this was the toughest thing in my life. For years I carried extremely heavy rucksacks, traveled thousands of miles cross country, and jumped from over 100 perfectly good aircraft. I continue to work with guys half my age on the Desoto County SWAT team. BEST EATS: I love Mexican food from Casa Mexicana in Olive Branch and pizza from Lost Pizza. BARBECUE FOR BRUNCH Twice-Baked Sweet Potatoes Stuffed With Sausage and Spinach, Topped With Eggs, and Seasoned With a Homemade Barbecue Rub Who says you can’t have barbecue for breakfast? We take some of our favorite morning items—eggs, sausage, and potatoes—add a dash of southern culture and incorporate two of our favorite superfoods to make this recipe our new go-to brunch meal. It’s packed with protein, nutrients, and full of flavor. These twice baked potatoes are a perfect morning dish for both healthy eaters and breakfast lovers alike. by Margaret Molteni
Ingredients:
BBQ Dry Rub:
q 2 large sweet potatoes
q 1 /2 tsp salt
q 1 + ¼ tsp coconut oil, divided
q 2 + 1/4 tsp paprika divided
q 1 lb pork sausage, to crumble
q 1 /2 tsp pepper
q 1 shallot, minced q 2 cups packed fresh spinach q 5 eggs
q 1 /2 tsp mustard powder q 1 /2 tsp nutmeg q 1 /2 tsp cumin q 1 /2 tsp garlic powder q 1 /2 tsp cinnamon
Instructions: – Preheat the oven to 350F – C ut the sweet potatoes in half longways and spread ¼ tsp coconut oil on the insides of each and put them face down on a lined cookie sheet. – Bake in the oven for 30 minutes or until soft to the touch. – W hile your potatoes are cooking, mix all ingredients of the seasoning and set aside.

– C rumble the pork sausage in a large sauté pan and brown until cooked all the way through. Add half of the BBQ seasoning. Transfer into a bowl and set aside. – I n the pan that you used for the sausage, add 1 tsp coconut oil and sauté the shallots on medium heat. Cook until translucent (about 3 minutes). Add the spinach and wilt for 1 minute, stirring constantly. Add shallots and spinach to the bowl with the sausage. – W hen the potatoes are done, scoop out the soft center and mix into the bowl with the sausage and spinach. Stir in the rest of the BBQ seasoning. – F ill sweet potato skins with sausage mixture and put back in oven for 5-10 minutes. – I n the meantime, scramble 5 eggs and plate them on top of the stuffed sweet potatoes. – Sprinkle with a little paprika or optional salt and enjoy!

Veggie-Packed Napa Cabbage Wraps with Spicy Peanut Sauce

Here in the Mid-South, we’re all about the barbecue and meat’s estranged cousin, tofu, has earned itself a bad rap. We’re here to set the record straight with a different kind of wrap—a delicious one packed with hearty vegetables and a flavorful sauce. We’ve replaced white, mushy, and tasteless with savory, spicy, and crunchy. Packed full of fiber, protein, and nutrients, this Asian-inspired recipe will win over even the most ardent meat-lovers.
Ingredients:
Spicy Peanut Sauce
q 1 head of napa cabbage
q 1 /4 cup peanut butter
q 1 8-ounce package crimini mushrooms
q 1 tablespoon toasted sesame oil
q 2 medium carrots (roughly chopped)
q 1 tablespoon brown rice vinegar
q 1 red bell pepper (roughly chopped, remove seeds to reduce spiciness)
q 1 tablespoon sriracha
q 1 -inch piece of fresh ginger, peeled
q 1 tablespoon mirin
q 3 large cloves of garlic, peeled
q 1 /2-inch piece fresh ginger, peeled
q 1 /2 teaspoon Chinese five-spice
q 2 to 3 tablespoons water
q 1 /4 teaspoon black pepper q 2 tablespoons olive oil (divided)
– Add the peanut butter, sesame oil, rice vinegar, sriracha, Bragg’s Liquid Aminos (or soy sauce), mirin, and ginger into a food processor. Blend until smooth.
q 1 8-ounce package extra-firm tofu (drained, cubed)
– Add enough water to form a thick, but pourable sauce.
q 1 /4 teaspoon kosher salt
q 1 /2 cup dry roasted peanuts q 1 /4 cup cilantro leaves

q 1 tablespoon Bragg’s Liquid Aminos (or traditional soy sauce)
q S picy Peanut Sauce (recipe follows)
FIT RECIPE Instructions: – C ut napa cabbage in half; reserve leaves for the wraps and set aside. Cut the root end off of the cabbage and discard. Place the remaining cabbage in the food processor and pulse 5 to 6 times until finely chopped but not mushy. Place chopped cabbage in a large bowl and set aside. – P lace mushrooms into the food processor and pulse 5 times until finely chopped. Add them to the bowl with the cabbage. Place the carrots and bell pepper in the food processor and repeat the process of pulsing 5 times. Add this to the vegetable mixture. – P lace the ginger and garlic in the food processor and pulse. Add this to the vegetable mixture along with the five-spice, black pepper, and salt. – P ut a wok or large frying pan over the highest heat on the stovetop, and let it heat up until wisps of smoke rise up from the hot metal. Carefully pour in one tablespoon of olive oil and wait for it to start to smoke. – N ow, put the tofu into the wok and give it a shake—be aware that it may pop and splatter. Let the tofu rest in the hot pan without being disturbed for 45 seconds before tossing to redistribute it. Flip the tofu two additional times; after each flip, allow tofu to cook for 1 minute or until nicely browned. – R emove tofu from the wok and place it into the food processor along with the peanuts. Pulse the food processor 5 times until mixture is finely chopped. – A dd the remaining olive oil to the hot wok. Repeat the same stir-frying process with the vegetable mixture. Once the mixture looks dry, add the tofu and peanut mixture and toss to incorporate. Spoon mixture onto a serving platter. Garnish with cilantro leaves. Serve alongside the reserved cabbage leaves and sauce.
