FIT TIP A psychologist studying food cravings at University at Albany discovered that eating a combination of sweet and salty snacks, like chocolate-covered pretzels, means our brain has a harder time feeling satisfied. This phenomenon is called Sensory-Specific Satiety. Our brains tire of one taste when eating only sweet or only salty treats, but the combination of flavors, spells double trouble for our waistline. They suggest snacking on celery and peanut butter to deliver the same sweet and salty satisfaction.
FIT PRODUCT Guys need products too. TAUN’s vital blend of ingredients fights all signs of aging like crow’s feet, frown lines, under-eye bags, uneven skin tone, and dark spots, while restoring firmness and elasticity. Great American River Run 2017 Early Registration Open! Memphis in May International Festival opens registration for the second annual Great American River Run half marathon and 5K, scheduled for Memorial Day Weekend 2017 — Sunday, May 28. The second-year event, a half marathon and 5K run, was one of two new events the festival unveiled in 2016 and had a banner first year with runners from 33 states and four foreign countries enjoying downtown Memphis and river views as they completed the course. One difference from the 2016 race, the 2017 Great American River Run will be the festival’s finale event and will close the month-long Memphis in May International Festival. The 2016 race drew serious competitors with half marathon winner, Pius Nyantika from Louisville, KY, finishing in 1 hour 7 mins 23.1 seconds and the fastest female finisher, Samantha Campanaro a Germantown, Tenn. resident, clocking in at just over 1 hour 27 minutes. On the 5k course, 17-year-old local Christopher Walls from Arlington, Tenn., finished first at 18 minutes 8.7 seconds; with the fastest female, Jamie Turner from Memphis, coming in at 20 minutes, 43.9 seconds. “We had a fantastic inaugural race, and we can’t wait to once again celebrate the gorgeous vista of the Mississippi river,” says James L. Holt, President and CEO of Memphis in May International Festival. “We knew the race would be popular with local and regional runners and were overwhelmed by the national and international response.” The 2017 course map will be unveiled in early 2017 and is, once again, expected to be a favorite of local and regional runners. The race route will highlight the great Memphis riverfront with live entertainment throughout the course, ending with a fantastic post-race party featuring live music, food, and beverages in Tom Lee Park. Both the half marathon and 5k races will be held on Sunday, May 28, 2017, 7:00 a.m. Both races are designed for all levels — from elite athletes to the beginning runner or family participant.
Memphis in May International Festival is a not for profit, community-based organization, whose programs contribute more than $88 million annually in economic impact to the community, foster civic pride, promote awareness of Memphis heritage, and build international relationships and understanding through education. Memphis in May International is the official Festival of the City of Memphis, and the recipient of 195 prestigious Pinnacle Awards from the International Festival and Events Association. Memphis in May International Festival was recently named to Travel+Leisure’s international list of Festivals Worth Traveling For. LIVING HEALTHY By Laura Lendermon, MD
Heal Thy Self
Regenerative Medicine & Stem Cell Therapy Welcome to 2017 and the world of “regenerative medicine” and “stem cell therapy.” It’s becoming a mainstream treatment that is being used more all the time. Regenerative medicine is the term used to describe the process of using the body’s own resources to assist in healing. HERE ARE SOME OPTIONS: Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) involves drawing the patients own venous blood in the traditional manner, such as for standard blood test. This blood is then processed and spun in a centrifuge-type machine to separate the plasma and platelets from the whole red blood cells. The nutrient and growth factors of the platelet and plasma are then injected into the injured area of the body. Athletes used to leave the country for this treatment but is now offered domestically. It is particularly effective in treating tendon and muscle injuries, such as tennis elbow and plantar fasciitis. It is a breakthrough option for patients who have failed to get long-term relief from traditional treatments. Bone Marrow Aspirate (BMA) is the process of taking bone marrow aspirate from the iliac crest. It is performed in a sterile office setting. Using appropriate local anesthesia, bone marrow is removed and processed in a special machine that identifies special types of stem cells, called mesenchymal stem cells. These cells are capable of accelerating the body’s natural healing processes, in this case towards a damaged joint. This process is like a “graft” because the stem cell mixture is intentionally placed back in the damaged area of the joint. These cells create a healing process that gradually and steadily leads to more clinical improvement with minimal risk and down time. BMA is an exciting treatment for the patient with arthritis who just can’t get symptoms under control, but isn’t ready to get a joint replacement. Autologous Fat Transfer (ATF) is the new star in regenerative medicine. Research has found an abundance of stem cells available in simple subcutaneous fat located just below the skin. This fat is harvested using a technique developed for liposuction. A “mini liposuction” procedure is done in the office. The material is processed to separate the stem cells, then used in conjunction with bone marrow cells to be injected into the joint. The liposuction as well as the bone marrow harvesting procedures are painless and easily performed with local anesthesia, although oral medication is also used prior to the procedure. Stem cell and other regenerative medicines help treat degenerative arthritis in the knee, the most common joint ailment. However, hip and shoulder joints are also becoming common. Some centers treat degenerative changes in the spine as well. The ideal candidate for regenerative therapy has arthritis with mild to moderate changes, constant pain that cannot be managed in the usual manner, or the patient is not able to enjoy normal activities due to pain. After a stem cell or regenerative medicine treatment, change will gradually show in less than two months, although research shows that growth and healing continues for up to 12 months.
10
The change and improvements comes steadily and gradually to activity and pain levels. Things that were once difficult become more routine. A 65-yearold grandmother who could no longer take her grandkids to the zoo noticed that she was able to walk more with less pain. Another example is being able to work in your yard again. Other patients simply enjoy increased quality of life with the ability to do regular activities that had been avoided because of pain. Even young athletes that have to curtail their workouts due to chronic pain benefit from stem cell and regenerative medicine.
As a doctor, the joy in this is seeing patients return to a better quality of life. Advancements in regenerative medicine have made it so much easier to treat pain. Pain should not be an excuse for not being active with so many treatment options available. Be proactive and take advantage of them. Make this the year you take care of you. Dr. Laura Lendermon is an Orthopedic physician, sports & stem cell specialist, and owner of the Orthopedic Stem Cell Center of Memphis, a division of Lendermon Sports Medicine in Collierville. BEAUT Y
BEAUTY DETOX: RENEW YOUR RADIANCE By Amber Sam Thompson
After a sea of cheery greets, sugary treats, and roasted meats, the holiday season can quickly leave skin worse for wear. The skin is the largest organ of elimination and the first to show signs of stress, poor diet, or unhealthy lifestyle choices. If your skin is showing your sins, follow this beauty detox routine to renew your natural radiance.
GREEN CLEAN YOUR BEAUTY ROUTINE
BEGIN WITHIN
GET DIRTY: Clay masks and body wraps have been used for centuries to purge, tighten, and tone skin. Clay attracts debris deep within pores and can help reduce cellulite with regular use. Begin your beauty detox with a deep cleansing facial and/or a clay body wrap. The best wraps are based in bentonite clay and French green or Moroccan clay and include a heating element, such as FAR infrared heat, to maximize skin detoxification.
TAKE OUT YOUR TRASH: Congested skin is often linked to poor colon chemistry, and an internal cleanse can go a long way. Colon Hydrotherapy gently clears excess debris from the colon to hydrate and restore your natural balance. Begin with three colon hydrotherapy sessions in three weeks, then follow up with monthly sessions for beautiful skin. H.O.P.E: Don’t wish, HOPE for better skin. Work this formula into your daily diet. Add 8-10 glasses of water for good hydration. (H) High fiber fruits and vegetables. Shoot for 5-7 servings daily, eating a rainbow of colors. (O) Omega Oils, 1000mg daily. Try Red Carpet by HUM Beauty Nutrition for a fish oil-free beauty boost. (P) Probiotics are nature’s beauty bugs that clean up debris in the intestines. Take a daily probiotic supplement or try Globiotic probiotic water with lemon for easy to assimilate probiotics and skin healing poly-phenols.
QUIT THE CHEMICALS: Most of the chemicals in skin care are cheap fillers, additives, and preservatives that can easily irritate skin. Feed your skin to heal your skin with organic, botanic skin care ingredients like aloe, rose, grapeseed oil, or hyaluronic acid. Choose clean, organic skin care lines like 100% Pure Skin Care, Le Mieux, or PureGlo probiotic skin care.
SEE THE LIGHT SWEATY SEXY: Perspiration is the greatest skin purifier. Infrared saunas supercharge a beauty detox by bathing the body in healing light that can penetrate the skin up to two inches, detoxing seven times more than a traditional sauna. FAR saunas also help our bodies make Vitamin D and can improve skin tone with regular use. ELECTRO-GLOW: Light therapies renew lackluster skin. LED lights stimulate collagen, kill acne, and improve pigmentation problems. Most spas have LED therapies that you can add to your monthly facial, or home units can be found online. Add a Limelight Laser facial to your beauty routine 3-4 times a year for the ultimate glow that will get noticed!
(E) Enzymes are the body’s beauty helpers that break down food and aide digestion. Take Bloat-X by Natural Balance with your two biggest meals to beat bloat for clearer skin.

COACH’S CORNER
LAYER UP: TIPS FOR BEING A WINTER WARRIOR By Rachel Randall A friend of mine says, “There is no bad weather, just bad gear.” Bad weather can be a matter of opinion, but the proper gear can make it possible to run even on the coldest winter days. Proper gear can make or break your run. With a little planning ahead, you can be ready for any weather Mother Nature throws at you. Layers are the magic of winter running. Heat trapped between layers keeps you warmer, but thin layers mean you can shed them when you get too hot. Two pairs of thin socks are better than one. Base layers also go a long way. An outer shell or windbreaker is a must for
protection against the wind and elements; it releases moisture from the body while keeping the cold out. Dress for temperatures 10-20 degrees warmer than it is. You’ll be cool at the beginning, but after a few minutes, your body will warm up. Too many clothes or the wrong ones will leave you sweaty and uncomfortable. Carry a hat and gloves to keep the extremities warm! Vaseline helps protect skin that might still be exposed. Safety is always important, especially with fewer hours of daylight. If running in the dark, wear

Now armed with all the tools you need to prepare for colder weather, get out there and enjoy the faster times that it brings! Before you know it, the summer heat and humidity will be back, and you’ll find yourself longing for the cold winter days again.

reflective gear and carry a light so you can see and be seen. Hydration is also important in the winter months. While an icy cup of water may not sound appealing, your body still loses water through sweat, which needs to be replaced.

COVER PROFILE
Rosalyn R. Ross
actress, model & yoga instructor Interview by Amy Goode. Photo by Tindall Farmer.
Known for her roles in “Nashville” and “Sun Records,” 40-year-old Rosalyn R. Ross is a Memphis-made actress and yoga instructor. She’s held other roles in independent films such as “Free in Deed” and “Columbus,” and done commercial work for some of Memphis’s biggest corporate and retail players—FedEx, Memphis Grizzlies, Mercedes Benz of Memphis, and Laurelwood Shopping Center. When not at auditions, Rosalyn teaches yoga at Midtown Yoga, Better Bodies Yoga, and French Riviera.
The Path to Acting It came through my passion for yoga. I spent 13 years as a marketing professional until I was laid off in 2011. Another job came through almost immediately, but it just didn’t feel right. It would have been a heavier travel schedule and the corporate culture didn’t really mesh with my personal values. Within 30 days of declining that offer, I was signed up for a 30-day yoga submersion teacher training with Sonic Yoga in Manhattan, NY. I spent the next six months energized by the city’s culture, diversity, and endless opportunities. It was after I settled back into Memphis that I began to think of myself more as a creative and an entrepreneur than a marketing executive. As I departed New York City, I hoped that pursuing something I had wanted for so long would open the door to me fulfilling more dreams—and it did. With the support of my husband, I started blogging about sports and fitness. In addition, I finally walked into a local talent agency in 2013 with my sights set on becoming and on-air sports host and walked out with my sights set on acting.
Yoga’s Influence on Acting Yoga helps with the pressure of being an actor. Every time I attend or teach a yoga class, I encounter someone who breaks stereotypes — like someone that size can’t do certain poses or someone older doesn’t have a vibrant practice. Those stereotype-crushing yogis give me the courage to know that I can crush them as well in whatever field I choose.
18
As an actor, you spend significant time auditioning, which is the ultimate test of letting go. You prepare as if the role is yours, see yourself as the character, present yourself as if you’re the only person for the part—then immediately let it all go when the audition is over. There isn’t usually a follow-up, and you know you don’t have the part when the start date rolls around and you’re still sitting at home. The worst is when you see another actor on-screen reciting the lines you studied so hard to learn. So many rejections can wreck your confidence, but to be a
professional, you have to experience it over and over again.
exceptions. It’s the only way I know how to look my best and keep my energy up.
Yoga helps me work through and let go of the emotional stress of the job. Learning to be present from pose to pose, not getting hung up on advanced shapes you couldn’t do, and staying present with silence in meditation is the ultimate cultivation of letting go.
Advice to Newbies
It also complements acting by keeping your body in shape, and teaching is a source of income between bookings. Being physically active naturally elevates the mood.
I ❤ Yoga What I love most about it is that it rescued me. My yoga practice started when I was in a high stress corporate environment. It safely grounded me when I was surely headed for a crash and burn situation. It made fall in love with fitness again. And now in this second phase of my life and career, it has been the catalyst to living my dreams.
Staying Energized Making it through a 10-hour shoot starts the day before. I do yoga, some cardio, eat nutritious, home cooked meals, drink lots of water, and finish the day with eight hours of sleep—no
Find a good beginner class that focuses on the fundamentals and basic alignment. Don’t be seduced by Instagram yogis who show many elegant, advanced poses. That’s not where it starts. Get down the basics before attempting backbends and inversions.
Nutrition My mom unexpectedly passed away of stomach cancer three years ago, just 26 days after being diagnosed. Since then I mainly eat a vegan diet but make exceptions for dairy in social situations. Not everyone has to go to extremes to eat better, just cut out sugar. Cutting down on it is one of the best things you can do for yourself and your family.
In the Future On my plate in 2017 … more auditions! I want more acting work and I having to be willing to get more NO’s on my way to more YES’s. I would love to attend more yoga classes (outside of teaching them) and present a workshop or be a visiting teacher at a studio out of town.

WEIG HT LOSS PROFILE
Carrie Springer Age: 42 Family: Two sons, ages 10 and 11, husband Jacob Occupation: FedEx Trade Networks Total weight loss: 90 lbs
Flipping through vacation photos, Carrie Springer wasn’t happy with what she saw. Carrie had struggled with weight most of her life, and that summer she was at her heaviest—279 pounds. She decided then that it would never incrase. In July 2015, she began working with a trainer at LA Fitness, doing 30 minutes of weight training and 30 minutes of cardio three days per week. Between July and October, she let go of 25 pounds but knew she needed other tools to hit her target weight. Carrie opted for gastric bypass surgery, not as a cure or an easy way to lose the weight but as one tool in her weight-loss journey. The procedure was performed by Robert Wegner, MD of St. Francis Center for Surgical Weight Loss. Though not an easy undertaking, it was a way to jumpstart a lifestyle change. Just several months after the procedure, Carrie was sidelined again and underwent another surgery in January 2016 for a stress fracture in her foot, which was performed by Murray Butler, MD at Ortho One. Carrie spent 18 weeks in a boot and limited herself to weight training and low intensity activities. After physical therapy and a full recovery, she went right back to exercising normally. She amped up her weight training and started running. In the spring of 2016, a friend suggested the Annie Oakley triathlon at Shelby Farms. “With only three weeks of training, my goal was to finish and to not be last,” she said. That first triathlon gave her the confidence to keep racing. In August she completed the Nashville Spartan Race—a 3-5 mile obstacle course. And a few months after that, she finished a Super Spartan race (8-10 miles of 25 obstacles). Carrie now avidly works out at CrossFit Mechanix in Lakeland and has several races and triathlons on her radar for 2017. Carrie has last 90 pounds in the past year and a half. In addition to exercise, she eats several small meals throughout the day and makes sure to get enough protein through protein shakes and lean meats. By eating smaller portions and making healthier food choices, she has changed the way she looks at food and nutrition. When asked about what helped her stay on track in the early stages, Carrie said it was having a friend or trainer to hold her accountable. “Knowing I’m meeting someone for a run or my trainer is waiting on me at the gym gives me extra motivation to show up.”

By Christin Yates. Photo by Baxter Buck.
Age: 47 Family: Wife, Beth, and six children ages 3-11 Occupation: Pastor of Fellowship Memphis Total weight loss: 60 lbs
For most of his life, weight had never been an issue for John Bryson. He played college sports, worked out fairly consistently, and ran the occasional half marathon to managed to maintain his health. But into his mid-forties, keeping weight off wasn’t as easy as it had been. By age 45 he was 50 pounds heavier, which needed to change. “I asked myself how active I wanted to be 20 years down the road. I knew I wanted to be able to keep up with my six children, and in order to do that, I needed to get my health in check,” he said. John joined Iron Tribe in East Memphis In November 2014. Iron Tribe is a competitive group fitness sport that centers on HIIT style training. With scalable levels to achieve, the fitness program cultivates a more diverse blend of athletes from kids to seniors. John went to Iron Tribe classes four days a week and immediately loved the atmosphere. “Iron Tribe provided me with coaching, a community, and a schedule to follow,” he said. “There’s no substitute for a community of other individuals who are working on their health and wellness to help you push yourself harder.” To keep himself on track, John schedules the classes in his calendar 60-90 days in advance. “Going to Iron Tribe classes has become part of my weekly routine. If I schedule time for it, just like I schedule time for anything else, I make it a priority to be there.” Since joining two years ago, John has lost 60 pounds, going from a size XXL shirt and 40” waist to to a size Large shirt and 34” waist. Once reaching his goal, John donated all of his old clothing to charity. “I knew that if I gained the weight back, it would be expensive to buy new clothes, so getting rid of the larger clothes is another way to hold myself accountable to maintaining my weight.” In addition to Iron Tribe classes, John has journaled all of his meals with MyFitnessPal app for more than 650 days, which he credits with helping him eat enough protein and healthy fat while staying in his calorie range. On average, John eats 1,800-2,000 calories per day and noticed a drastic change in his energy levels. “I have a much better quality of life now. I’m able to keep up with my kids, and we get out and do activities as a family much more often.” In addition to Iron Tribe, John joins his family for a walk or bike ride once a week. “I had to make a lifestyle change for my wife and children’s sake. I want to be active and energetic as they get older.”

Raushanah Crenshaw Age: 38 Occupation: Human Resources Total weight loss: 75 lbs
In 2010, Raushanah Crenshaw weighed in at 250 pounds and knew she needed to do something for her health. For her, LAP-BAND® surgery was the answer to jumpstart her weight loss. What should have been an easy recovery turned into a five-year nightmare of terrible side-effects. Raushanah became nauseous and threw up after nearly every meal for years. While managing to lose 40 pounds, her diet only consisted of yogurt, ice cream, mashed potatoes, and anything else she could keep down. After five years, the band was removed to restore her quality of life. During the removal process, the doctors learned the complications were due to scar tissue buildup that choked the band and made it hard to eat. They would need to remove part of Raushanah’s stomach for her body to heal properly. “I paid a big price for having the surgery—not just monetarily. I literally lost a part of my body in the process,” she says. Once recovered, she decided no more shortcuts. Raushanah began working out and planning meals with trainer Sherika Norris. Sherika took a realistic approach to nutrition. Nothing was eliminated or banned from Raushanah’s diet; rather the two focused on adapting Raushanah’s favorite recipes and dishes to be healthier. Since June 2015, Raushanah has lost 50 pounds and has reached her goal weight: 175. Raushanah continued working in group fitness classes and with Sherika on nutrition until deciding to take her wellness journey in her own hands. Today, she works out an hour, four days per week in the gym, mixing it up with the bike, elliptical, treadmill, and weights. “I also do 100 quick squats in the morning and get in my crunches at night. I’m still working on toning my core,” she says. Raushanah continues preppings meals each week based on lean meats and veggies for a high protein and low carb intake. Her go-to breakfast is a breakfast burrito, and she snacks on cheese, nuts, and dried fruit throughout the day. “I believe in making things that are easy to take on the go. I prep for the week ahead, so I can just grab something from the fridge and head out the door.” Much to her surprise, her favorite vegetable is brussel sprouts, which she often makes them with brown rice and boneless, skinless chicken thighs.

When talking about her weight loss journey, she says, “I decided I had to move forward instead of moving backward. Changing my attitude and mentality about eating and working out was the best thing I could do for my health.”

WEIG HT LOSS PROFILE
Debbie Butler Age: 33 Family: Two children (10 and 12), fiancé Russell Occupation: Stylist at Pastille Salon in Cordova Total weight loss: 40 lbs
For most of her life, Debbie Butler weighed a healthy 120 pounds. But after two kids, her weight steadily crept up. Finally reaching 160, she decided she had enough. Debbie tried to lose the weight on her own for several months and saw some success. But after wedding dress shopping, she knew it was time to enlist outside help and turned to The Transformation Doctor in Collierville to kick her weight loss plan into high gear. Debbie began the Ideal Protein program with The Transformation Doctor in June 2016. It’s a medicallydesigned weight-loss method developed in Europe more than 25 years ago. It combines combines a variety of high quality protein-based foods with weekly personalized coaching. During the weight-loss phase, clients limit carbohydrate intake to stimulate fat-burning. Eating more protein encourages muscle mass and teaches people to develop smarter eating habits and lifestyle choices to help maintain their weight, even after the program. In phases 2-4, clients work on maintenance and are introduced to a customized fitness plan. Once hitting their goal, The Transformation Doctor follows up 6-12 months afterward to ensure weight is being maintained. Debbie hit her target of 115 pounds just four months after she started. She considers her new way of eating and thinking about nutrition a life-long change. Debbie is currently in phases 2-4 and has started an exercise routine. She does cardio and weight-training four days a week. Debbie’s two kids and her fiancé are also eating healthier, although she admits they indulge more often than her. When asked about encouraging others to start a weight loss program, Debbie says, “It’s easier than you think. You have to be ready and in the right mindset, but once you start, you will feel great and won’t want to go back to your old ways. The staff at The Transformation Doctor is super supportive and an important part of my continued success. I am maintaining my weight and can’t wait to walk down the aisle in April, 40 pounds lighter than the day I said ‘yes!’”

He would be so much fun, and I would like to try to make him laugh. IF YOU COULD COME BACK AS AN ANIMAL WHAT WOULD YOU BE: I would come back as my dog because then I would be loved more than any other creature on Earth.
FUN FACT: I was a late bloomer. I was never athletic growing up. I was the pudgy bookworm with asthma. I didn’t even get a mountain bike until I was 51! ON MY NIGHTSTAND: Thomas Friedman’s “Thank You for Being Late” and Joe Friel’s “Fast After 50.” VICE: Beer. I love beer. FAVORITE QUOTE: Fall down seven, stand up eight. —Japanese proverb

I get in my zone with my headphones on and music pumping and try to keep conversations/ distractions to a minimum. Then I go rip it up! MOST MEMORABLE WW MOMENT: Running the original marathon course in Athens. I’m half-Greek, so I ran the last two miles holding up American and Greek flags. Being in the woods or mountains with people you love is the best way to enjoy life! FITNESS MOTIVATION: I can’t imagine my life any other way. After surgery it was a tough comeback, but thanks to a great PT program and yoga, I’ve had a full recovery. A Healthy Start To The New Year
By Lisa Mullin
With the extra weight that creeped up during Halloween and stayed through New Years, it’s time for a strategic weight loss plan. Getting fit and eating healthy is a challenge that is well worth it. Motivation, commitment, and dedication are what make resolutions work. And if living a healthy lifestyle isn’t enough, Spring Break is just around the corner.
Tips to start the year off right: Be Realistic with your Goals. Don’t aim for fast, drastic weight loss. Working out seven days a week is unnecessary and unrealistic. Strict or fad diets set you up for failure. People tend to throw in the towel quickly when their goals are unrealistic. Start with small diet and exercise goals and add on as you progress.
Make an investment. Start a gym membership or invest in some fitness gear. A new pair of running shoes, a set of dumbbells, a fitness tracker, or clearing out the junk from your pantry will do. Having invested some money into your plan may keep you from finding excuses.
Get inspired. Sign up for fitness or healthy nutrition newsletters. Follow other fitness or nutrition enthusiasts on Facebook or Instagram. Read success stories of others who accomplished their goals. Others who have succeeded in the same goals as you can be extremely motivating.
Write it down. Plan plan plan! Be diligent with your meal planning. Meal planning is a great way for success. Set aside time to plan, shop, and prep for meals. Include recipes for healthy meals and soups. Soups are great when the weather is cool. If you keep them broth based and loaded with vegetables and beans, they can be filling and sustaining.
Keep track of what you eat. Keep a food diary. MyFitnessPal is a great app for that. Studies show that keeping a record of your progress can help you succeed. It helps to uncover unhealthy patterns and figure out where
help is needed—like a reality check! Try to eat a lean protein and veggies at every meal. Reduce your meat intake, try swapping meat for a vegetarian protein source. Eat more omega-3’s like salmon, tuna, or sardines. If you’re not a fish lover, opt for walnuts or flaxseed. Cut back on indulgences, but don’t deprive yourself. Aim for the 80/20 rule. Eat healthy 80% of the time, reserving the 20% for special occasions.
Get proper sleep. People who get less then seven hours of sleep per night are susceptible to weight gain. Sleep deprivation can lead to poor food choices. Maintain a routine sleep schedule. Try to go to bed and wake at the same time daily.
Mix up your fitness routine. Try a variety of different workouts to keep you interested and that you will enjoy. Yoga, barre classes, or weightlifting are excellent for strength and flexibility while walking, running, or biking are great cardio choices. Pick days and times that work for you, so it becomes a habit and another part of your regular routine.
Reward Yourself. Staying motivated requires incentive. Reward yourself with something nice to wear, new gear, or take a fit trip to celebrate your progress and your new lifestyle.
