FIT NEWS
Campbell Clinic Leads Research Study of Cell-Based Injection for Treatment of Knee Osteoarthritis (Now accepting patients) The advancement of injection options for a wide range of joint, ligament, and muscle/tendon conditions has grown exponentially over the last decade. There has been a paradigm shift from performing “blind” injections (palpation guided) using traditional cortisone and/or hyaluronidase (lubricant) solutions to more precise ultrasoundguided injections using more naturally occurring “biologics.” These cell- and tissue-based options include a smorgasbord of solutions frequently obtained from the patient’s own blood or tissue. Obviously, there is a great appeal for using one’s own natural growth factors to stimulate healing rather than relying on pharmaceutical injectables for symptom management. Treatments that were only available for highprofile athletes are now being promoted and advertised for use by the “weekend warrior” athlete and general population. Although many of these treatments may have great promise, traditional medical organizations have been somewhat slow to endorse them due to limited research, conflicting findings, and lack of regulatory approval. Researchers have been working diligently to better define the mechanism of injury and aging process in many musculoskeletal conditions. For example, osteoarthritis affects some 30 million adults in the United States. More than 600,000 total knee replacements are performed in the U.S. each year, and approximately 4.7 million Americans currently have undergone a total knee replacement, according to findings documented in 2014 by physicians at the Mayo Clinic.(1) We all know someone who has osteoarthritis, which results in a gradual decline in the protective cartilage that forms the joint. The joint
space and lubrication become ineffective, and one’s mobility and quality of life deteriorates with an endpoint frequently requiring a total joint replacement. There appear to be many contributing factors including genetics, one’s immune process, micro/macro injuries, and the body’s ability to respond to such challenges. Fortunately, we are now able to concentrate particular cells and proteins found in one’s own blood, which, according to in vitro and animal studies, may decrease inflammation and promote repair of tissues.(2, 3) This process is a more refined approach than that which is available through traditional Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) and is the subject of an ongoing double-blind study sponsored by Zimmer Biomet called the PROGRESS IV clinical trial. Campbell Clinic is proud to have been chosen as an investigational site for studying the use of the nSTRIDE® (4) APS modality in those with painful osteoarthritis in one knee. As with all wellcontrolled studies, there are criteria that need to be met prior to clearance for patient participation. Eligible patients will be randomly assigned to receive an injection of the autologous protein solution (APS) or saline. If the individual cannot fulfill the requirements of the study, however, Campbell Clinic offers a multitude of other treatment options for managing symptoms associated with osteoarthritis.

LIVING HEALTHY By Larrie Rodriguez, B.S., L.M.T.
Bamboo-Fusion Massage Bamboo-Fusion Massage is a modality for anyone looking for a relaxing massage or needing some serious deep tissue bodywork. This unique modality uses warm bamboo to promote a deep sense of relaxation and well being. Gently heated pieces of smooth bamboo are used for kneading tight muscles and rolling out tension. The fusion of Swedish massage with deep tissue is ultra-transformative. The body’s natural reaction to stress—whether it’s physical, mental, or emotional—is to tense up into “fight or flight” mode. Chronic tension can cause the muscles to tighten and knot. That’s when a dull ache can lead to pain as muscles become less flexible and are more prone to injury. This is what makes a warm bamboo massage ideal. The soothing heat penetrates the muscles, triggering the body’s automatic relaxation response and making it easier for the therapist to
access those areas of underlying tension. Throughout the massage, several different pieces of warmed bamboo are used to work the tension out muscles. A variety of strokes are incorporated in different styles to stretch and compress the muscle and tissue. Once the body has been thoroughly warmed, the therapist can painlessly work out any knots needing extra attention. The results are incredible. The body is able to completely relax as muscles loosen and joints become more flexible, resulting in renewal and rejuvenation. Nathalie Cecilia, originally from France, is the creator of Bamboo-Fusion Massage. She discovered the technique when many of her clients were asking for deep tissue treatment. She started experiencing pain and fatigue in her hands and wrists. She began using bamboo in 2004 to assist her with deep tissue work and noticed her pain subsided. Clients also loved it.
She then developed an innovative way to give bamboo massage on the table (Bamboo-Fusion), meanwhile fashioning a custom bamboo set to give the massage. Her goal today is to help therapists provide deep massage without pain. This technique aids in avoiding repetitive injuries, such as carpal tunnel, and reduces the stress on thumbs, wrists, and hands. In the United States, bamboo is primarily symbolic and is gaining in popularity because it is a highly renewable resource. It is also beautiful and considered lucky by many people. The use of a renewable and sustainable resource that connects us to ancient times can address our modern need for deep tissue massage. LIVING HEALTHY By Merrill S. Wise, MD
Sleep and Performance Busy people often say that sleep is a waste of time, but a growing body of high quality evidence shows that an adequate amount of good quality sleep is critical for health and longevity. People who don’t get enough sleep or who have untreated sleep disorders often experience daytime sleepiness, fatigue, loss of focus and concentration, irritability, and moodiness. They are also accident prone and more likely to have high blood pressure and a host of other cardiovascular problems. Problems with sleep can lead to poor focus on the job, lost productivity, careless mistakes, difficulty with arriving late, or even missing work, which may eventually impact a person’s job success and income. Poor sleep and sleep disorders also affect athletic performance and competitiveness. Convincing evidence shows that well rested athletes of all skill levels perform and compete better than those who do not obtain adequate, high quality sleep. Most adults feel and function their best with 7-8 hours of sleep per 24 hours. However, a majority of people are sleep deprived on a chronic basis. Imagine living life with only 70 percent of the fluid your body needs and being in a constantly dehydrated state.
10
Another common sleep issue is a breathing problem called obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). People with this problem snore habitually but also have recurrent brief periods of decreased or absent air flow that degrades their quality of sleep and leads to excessive sleepiness and elevated risk for high blood pressure and other issues. There are dozens of other sleep disorders including insomnia, restless legs syndrome, parasomnias (unusual movements or behaviors in sleep), and narcolepsy. If you are concerned about your sleep, talk with your primary care provider or consult with a sleep specialist. How we sleep impacts how we feel and function, how we think and focus, how we perform at work, and how we compete on the playing field and in life! For more information call Methodist Healthcare Sleep Disorders Center at 901.683.0044 or visit www.methodisthealth.org/healthcare-services/ sleep-disorders/.

A Father Who Found His Fitness Family By Brittany Anas. Photo by Tindall Stephens.
AGE: 39 OCCUPATION: MANAGER AT ACCREDO SPECIALTY PHARMACY FAMILY: WIFE, GINA, AND TWO KIDS: HARPER (8) AND CALDER (3) From 10 months ago, CULLEN MORGAN is down 40 pounds, at 10.5 percent body fat, and about to make his third shopping trip for smaller clothes. But those are just the numbers. His fitness journey is marked with other important milestones. He can now play tag with his kids without getting winded in 30 seconds. “My soon-to-be 4-year-old is learning to ride a bike, and I can run alongside him,” Cullen says. Overall the father of two is feeling more energetic and kicked his Mountain Dew habit, which had been his caffeine crutch. He’s even training for two upcoming 10K races. It was being there for his family that motivated the former cheerleader to get back in shape. “I was getting to a stage where I was considered obese,” Cullen says. “My kids are young, and I want to be there for them and set a healthy example.” Hearing of other people’s success, Cullen joined Iron Tribe in Germantown. The workouts are 45-minute group classes that use HIIT-style training paired with one-onone style coaching. Everything clicked into place and the weight started coming off. What Cullen likes most is the camaraderie and that the coaches and other members genuinely seem invested in one another’s fitness journeys. “It’s a community that comes together and holds each other accountable,” he says. Cullen’s wife, Gina, has joined him in making their family healthier. She also works out five days a week. They both encourage each other and value the importance of prioritizing time to be healthy. Together they meal prep by cutting up veggies to have on hand throughout the week to make healthy dinners like burrito bowls. Part of Cullen’s success is that he genuinely likes showing up to work out. “I was able to find something I enjoy and stick with it,” he says. It’s safe to say he’s found his fit tribe.

FIT DADS
FIT FATHER OF FIVE By Christin Yates. Photo by Philip Murphy. Since 2010, fit father NOAH MORRELL has trained for and ran the Navy 10 Nautical Miler every year like a ritual, but his running career evolved in 2013. His partner, Montoyia, introduced him to the local running group Black Men Run (BMR). That’s when he began to get more serious. Black Men Run is a support group that encourages health and wellness among African American men by promoting a culture of running to stay fit. The group is open to men and women at beginner and advanced levels.
His favorite race is the Publix Georgia Marathon but not for the course or a PR. Thrown off by the time zone difference, Noah arrived an hour late to a deserted start line. Still determined to run and with no on-course support for the first 13 miles, he used his GPS and followed a trail of discarded water bottles to catch up to the tail end of the runners. Several people encouraged him to quit and veer off for the half marathon, but Noah persisted and is proud that he accomplished it.
With encouragement from his running community, Noah tackled his first marathon in 2014 at the St. Jude Marathon. That race sparked his love of marathons, and the busy dad hasn’t stopped. To date, he has run seven marathons, five in 2016 alone. “I started a small running group in 2016, Run Less Run Better, to help hold me accountable for my marathon training,” Noah says.
Noah’s training schedule includes three runs per week—speed work on the track, a pace run, and a distance run on Saturday mornings. Twice per month he joins BMR for his long run, and he cross-trains one day a week either cycling or doing classes at the Desoto Athletic Club. “Cycling has really helped with my endurance and has been key to my marathon training,” he says.
AGE: 42 OCCUPATION: VA MEDICAL CENTER FAMILY: PARTNER, MONTOYIA, AND FIVE CHILDREN: KEMETRIA (25), NOAH (24), KETICIA (22), JAICARI (19), AND JAIDON (14) 18
Noah has altered his eating habits to be a better runner. When preparing for a marathon, he eats a primarily vegetarian diet and only has one portion of meat per week. “I definitely feel lighter and healthier eating that way. I recommend trying it if you’re serious about running.” With five children from age 14-25, Noah says part of the reason he runs is to be able to be around longer for them and his grandson. With a second shift job and a small business he owns on the side, he runs early in the mornings so that he can spend the day with his family. Both of his sons are also going to the state championship for track this year, and he likes to set a good example for them. “I encourage my kids to be better and faster than their dad,” he says.

SURVIVOR
CHOOSING LIFE OVER LYME By Robin Beaudoin. Photo by Sarah McAlexander.
WILLIE RAWLS JR., 50, survived Lyme disease, but it was so much more than a tick bite by the time it was discovered. Cross-country truck driver by trade, his job kept him mostly removed from the outdoors. In May of 2011, Willie was working pulling refrigerated trucks cross-country. Nearing the end of a haul from California to Pennsylvania, Willie misjudged how far his fuel would take him. “I was trying to make it to a certain truck stop, and I ran out of fuel on the turnpike. I called a tow truck to pick me up, not knowing this tow truck driver had just pulled a big truck out of a wooded area, and he had been covered in ticks.”
“I was in Hayward, CA, and I stopped in the ER. They said my vitals were fine, but my heart felt like it was about to jump out of my chest.” Later, in Arkansas, he pulled over and was taken by ambulance to Methodist University hospital, where the undiagnosed Lyme symptoms with a co-infection appeared to be a heart attack. Palpitations threw off the EKG, but bloodwork was normal. One of the doctors didn’t know why Willie complained of chest pain. Another doctor said, “You have good insurance, let’s put a stent in, it’s not going to hurt him.”
The New England area is notorious for a dense population of blacklegged ticks. In 1975 a study was done to determine why so many children in Lyme, CT and two neighboring towns were being diagnosed with juvenile rheumatoid arthritis, and the city became the namesake of the newly discovered disease. Willie watched the tow truck operator pull tick after tick off himself, not knowing the ticks would later affect him. “Once they were done repairing my truck, I picked up and went back to California, and I didn’t know I was carrying a tick that whole time.” Two days later he laid down to sleep and felt a tiny wiggling bump on his back. “I popped it with my thumb, and it was full of blood—no bigger than a sesame seed.” It took three months to notice any symptoms. His usual long-haul schedule became grueling, and fatigue and heart palpitations (Lyme carditis) required him to make frequent breaks. Joint pain, shortness of breath, and flu-like symptoms began at six months, followed by loss of appetite and weakness. It eventually became difficult to walk.
Willie Rawls suffered for years with flu-like symptoms, joint pain, fatigue, and weakness due to an undiagnosed case of Lyme disease. 20
For Willie it was emotionally upsetting, and every doctor told him it was all in his head or that his issues stemmed from stress. “I live downtown on the river, life is good, I have a truck,” says Willie. Lying in bed, experiencing seizure-like spasms and full-body pain, Willie said to himself, “‘I’m dying. I’ve got to find somebody who knows what’s going on with me.’” He was active to his own recovery and went online, finding Lesley Ann Fein, MD, in Caldwell, NJ. She was a rheumatologist who specialized in Lyme disease and chronic infections—all of which fit his symptoms.
“Maintaining my health means conventional as well as herbal medicine and a good clean diet. Food heals the body.“ He drove from Memphis and passed out in the waiting room in New Jersey. While he was hospitalized, Dr. Fein told Willie there were angels watching over him and if had he not come, he would have likely died in a few months. With a heavy dose of antibiotics, Willie noticed a difference in his pain and energy levels within two weeks, Years later, he has regained the ability to walk through physical therapy. Regular workouts keep him strong enough to fight the chronic infections related to his Lyme disease. A combination of homeopathic and modern medicine treats symptoms and keeps infection mostly in check, but he still experiences flare-ups. Willie credits diet as well as medicine for his recovery. “I’ve met people who have made a turnaround and are completely healed from it, but it’s trial and error. Maintaining my health means conventional as well as herbal medicine and a good clean diet. Food heals the body. For me, I’m still going through it, and I believe the Lyme disease can be cured. You have to fight and find what works for you. With Lyme disease, there’s no one silver bullet. They say that antibiotics will get rid of it, but I went a whole year and a half being undiagnosed.”
WHAT YOU SHOULD KNOW ABOUT LYME DISEASE Lyme disease mimics many other diseases and is commonly misdiagnosed as MS, arthritis, heart disease, ALS, and even shingles. Lyme disease, caused by bacteria, is transmitted to humans through the bite of infected blacklegged ticks. According to the CDC, prevention is as simple as applying insect repellent. Symptoms range from minor to dangerous and debilitating. In the Mid-South, several species of tick threaten animals and humans alike. The American Dog Tick (or Wood Tick), Brown Dog Tick, Lone Star Tick, and the Gulf Coast Tick transmit diseases such as Lyme, Tularemia, and Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever. While ticks vary in size, all resemble a tiny spider carrying a watermelon or sesame seed on their backs. If you find a tick on your skin, remove it by grabbing close to the skin with fine-tipped tweezers and pulling straight out and away from the skin. Dispose of the tick in a sealable zip-top bag, with alcohol-soaked cotton ball inside. Never smash a tick between your fingers. Take a photograph of the tick, as identifying the type of tick can help in future diagnosis, should symptoms from tick-borne illness develop.

MENS HEALTH
HEALING HIMSELF AND OTHERS WITH CROSSFIT When JAMES LANCASTER tore his ACL in 2012, it meant giving up what he felt was his identity—professional football. For two years, he waited on a donor meniscus list to have a meniscal allograft and couldn’t run or jump. Because of three surgeries and physical rehab, James faced difficulty maintaining a job. He sold scrap brass and worked as a personal trainer to get by. Having been introduced to CrossFit in college, James turned to it during his dark time of healing. Rather than being intimidated by the sport, he admired the challenge. Not being good at it and having to work extra hard gave him a feeling of selfreward. After only two years of consistent CrossFit, 29-year-old James is the only athlete in Memphis to advance to this year’s CrossFit Games Regional in Nashville (May 26-28). His favorite workouts include a short, powerful sprint and a super long chipper (lots of movements at a great volume). A high caloric intake and plenty of sleep help him maintain a twice daily, five day a week training regimen. Despite his success, James now recognizes how easily everything can be taken away and doesn’t center his identity on sports. “I’m an average guy,” he says. “I didn’t wake up yesterday and say, ‘hmm, I’ll go to regionals this year’.” He feels the support he’s received from his gym community—made up of all ages and walks of life— is humbling and has helped him succeed not only in CrossFit but as a person. In 2016, James and his friend, Joc, were invited to speak at the Shelby County Jail, which they saw as an opportunity to help others. From there, a fitness program was born. Under James’s instruction, the men at 201 Poplar break into teams and hold five week series events similar to the CrossFit Games setup. Through these activities, they learn about communication, teamwork, and leadership. More importantly, they see it’s okay to be vulnerable. For many of them, it’s the first time they’ve trusted anyone or had any kind of guidance. James gets to know these men and understands their challenges, their need for survival mode, and the psychological issues they deal with. James insists: “Suffering is suffering. Everything else is fine detail. What we go through is different, but we are all hurting and all deserve unconditional love.” He is quick to tell those in his CrossFit classes: “I don’t care what you did. Nothing can ruin the grace I have for you.” After nearly a year of this program, those involved have had the fewest number of bad behavior incidents, and they look forward to the sessions. James wants to continue helping others who have no voice and hopes this outreach program will cause a ripple effect. He would like to see more programs for different age levels and in other communities outside of Memphis. “The old Memphis isn’t here anymore,” James says. What’s happening at 201 Poplar shows that there’s more good than bad.

Redefining Your Diet By Blair Mize, MS, RDN, CSSD, LDN
The word diet has two meanings: The definition widely followed by today’s culture is “a special course of food to which one restricts oneself.” According to the latest fads, people and advertisements will tell you: “Avoid this!” or “Drink this!” or “Complete this challenge!” The fact is 95 percent of diets fail, and most people regain that weight (or more) in 1-5 years. Dieting, or the pursuit of weight loss, is ironically one of the top predictors of future weight gain. Would you take a prescription with a 95 percent failure rate? Still, the diet industry tops $60 billion dollars every year, thriving on promising more than it can deliver on weight loss or management. In reality, the diet industry does just enough to keep people coming back again and again. Dieting may lead to temporary weight loss. However, it also leads to increased risk of poor body image, overeating, binging, and eating disorders. Dieting can slow metabolism, causing the body to become more efficient with less food. Additionally, any form of restriction can have emotional and physical consequences, not limited to depression, fatigue, weakness, social withdrawal, and irritability.
Many people feel overwhelmed and confused by the mixed messages and misinformation about nutrition. Sadly, the diet industry tricks people into overriding their body’s internal regulation system, leading to disconnect and distrust in their natural ability to eat nutritious food when hungry and stop when full. Feeling as though they’ve tried and failed at it all, they hit diet rock bottom. Diet’s second definition is “the kinds of foods that a person habitually eats.” A diet doesn’t need to be something a person goes on and off. Intuitive Eating, a process-based approach to developing a healthy relationship with food, mind, and body, aligns with this definition. It has over 70 studies to date citing positive outcomes, including greater sense of well-being, better glycemic control, decreased BMI, lower risk of chronic disease, and decreased overeating. Intuitive Eating allows people to make food choices that honor their health and taste buds. All foods can fit into a healthy lifestyle provided individuals eat with attunement, noticing the various aspects of how one feels before, during, and after eating. Everyone has a diet. Is yours defined by manipulation, elimination, deprivation, and rules? Or does it allow mindfulness, pleasure, variety, freedom, and attunement when eating? It’s never too late to abandon diets consisting of rigid rules and restriction and to begin viewing your diet as a collection of healthy, whole, and satisfying foods.
As Snickers says, “You’re not you when you’re hungry.” Why pay big bucks for temporary weight loss with awful side effects?
Blair Mize, MS, RDN, CSSD, LDN is co-owner of Memphis Nutrition Group, a nutrition & lifestyle counseling practice operated by registered & licensed dietitians/nutritionists. Memphis Nutrition Group believes in a non-diet approach that promotes overall health and optimal performance without compromising the enjoyment of food. MAN FOOD
NATURAL TESTOSTERONE BOOSTING FOODS
By Lisa Mullin
Low testosterone (Low T) in men is a common health issue today. While testosterone may be most familiar as the sex hormone and necessary for sexual function, it is what makes men “men. It is also necessary to maintain healthy pain response, regular sleep patterns, proper energy levels, sufficient levels of red blood cells, optimal bone density, and muscle mass. As men (and women) age, levels of testosterone decline. There are other factors that can contribute to this decline: poor nutrition, low vitamin D levels, weight gain, inadequate exercise, and prescription drugs (especially commonly prescribed Statins). Low T therapy, utilizing synthetic drugs, has become commonplace today. Instead of facing possible side effects, it is possible to overcome Low T naturally. Losing weight, optimizing vitamin D and zinc levels, reducing stress, reducing or eliminating sugar from your diet, and proper strength and cardiovascular training can help increase testosterone levels. Nutritionally speaking, there are foods we can eat to assist in the process too.
