Everyone Is Welcome In Pedaltown, USA A new bicycle shop is coming to town. If that makes you worry about wearing spandex, then this shop is for you. Clark Butcher, owner of Victory Bicycle Studio, is bringing a new concept to the local bicycle shop scene designed for the more casual rider. The new store, Pedaltown Bicycle Company, will open directly next to Victory Bicycle Studio on Broad Avenue. Butcher said, “Our goal is to provide a simple and un-intimidating solution for customers who are just looking for an easy way to get into riding bicycles or looking to get their kid a new bike.” The new brand offers a lower cost of entry to bicycling but with the same boutique-level service and experience as Butcher’s bicycle studio next door. Bicycles are displayed with the intention of not overwhelming shoppers. “I get it, new riders and people who haven’t ridden in a while aren’t looking to spend the same as enthusiasts, but they still want and deserve the same high-quality level of service that the market has grown to appreciate at Victory. And that’s what we’re providing at Pedaltown” Butcher said. When asked why not offer both levels of bicycles under the Victory name, Butcher responded, “I’ve seen so many other shops attempt to
handle all levels of cyclists, but those shops get spread thin and can’t provide the best level of service to the whole range of customers. With that broad of a customer base, there’s just too much product required to reasonably retain inventory and make enough revenue to keep the doors open.” Pedaltown is specifically targeted to customers looking for a lower cost of entry into cycling. Most bicycles averaging around $350 and are a bike shop quality product for close to department store costs. Pedaltown’s mission is to introduce children to that special feeling of “New Bike Day” and reacquaint older customers with that rush of riding a bicycle when they were children. “One thing that doesn’t change is the excitement of getting a new bike. It’s that same smile every time when someone leaves with their new toy. Bicycles are fun! And that’s what we want people to think when they think of Pedaltown,” Butcher said.
co-founded. The proximity to the Art Garden was important, since Pedaltown will actively interview graduates from the community bike shop program as potential employees.
The Pedaltown location was chosen to neighbor Victory Bicycle Studio and is centrally located on dedicated bike lanes within a walkable and rideable distance from the Carpenter Art Garden community bike shop, which Butcher also
Butcher proudly opens Pedaltown in the Broad Avenue Historic District. Pedaltown opens its doors soon. For more information email clark@pedaltownbicycle.com or call Pedaltown at 901.435.6789.

LIVING HEALTHY By Anne Rowland, MD
Eyelid Rejuvenation for a More Youthful Appearance Shakespeare said the “eyes are the window to the soul.” Our eyes, eyelids, and brows convey a great deal of emotion and information to those around us. But when eyelids start to develop bags and brows start to droop, we may be conveying emotions we’re not actually feeling such as “tiredness” and “sadness.” This can also make a person look years older than they truly are. Sometimes the eyelids actually block a portion of a person’s vision. In these cases, people may find themselves tilting their head back or raising their eyebrows to see better. Another symptom of heavy eyelids is to feel tired or achy around the eyes, especially later in the day. The most common cause of drooping eyelids is aging. There are a number of changes that occur to the eyelid and surrounding structures as a result of normal aging. Overall, there is descent and deflation of the tissues. There is loss of volume and downward movement of the soft tissues and bone. The skin itself loses elasticity, often resulting in loose or excess skin around the eyes. In some individuals, the normal fat pads that sit behind the eye can move toward the skin leading to “bags” under the eyes. Additionally, sun exposure damages the skin resulting in hyperpigmentation (“dark spots”), uneven skin tone, and wrinkles. There are a number of other reasons, however, for eyelids to drop. The normal eyelid has two muscles that help to keep it open. If either or both of these muscles become weak, the eyelid rests in a lower position. The medical term for this is ptosis. Ptosis can result from age-related changes, prior eye surgery, chronically rubbing the eyes, and contact lens use. The nerves that control the muscles can become damaged due to trauma or diseases, causing the eyelids to sag. Occasionally ptosis can also occur in children when they are born (congenital ptosis).
Depending on the cause of droopy eyelids, surgery can lift the brows, decrease the skin and fat around the upper or lower eyelids, and/or adjust the muscle that helps keep eyelids open. Sagging eyebrows can be raised by both nonsurgical and surgical means. A non-surgical, or chemical, brow lift is achieved using a botulinum toxin such as Botox® or Dysport ®.
These medications relax the muscles around the brow, allowing it to elevate. However, this lift is not permanent and needs to be done every 3–4 months. Additionally not all cases of brow droop can be corrected with these medications. For more severe cases, a surgical brow lift may be necessary to suspend the brow back to its original location. This can not only elevate the brow but also reduce excess upper eyelid skin and decrease the appearance of forehead wrinkles. There are several techniques for surgical brow lifts that can be tailored to each individual. The excess skin in the upper eyelids can be removed surgically by a procedure called a blepharoplasty. Similarly, a weakened eyelid muscle can be tightened and lifted by a ptosis repair surgery. These are fast and simple surgeries performed under local anesthesia in a doctor’s office. Sometimes insurance policies will cover these procedures if the excess eyelid skin hangs over one’s lashes, or the eyelid is sufficiently low across the pupil and causes obstruction of a significant portion of a person’s superior and peripheral vision. An eye doctor can perform an examination to determine this degree of vision loss. A blepharoplasty can also be performed on the lower eyelids to remove the fat that causes “bags” to excise excess skin. Eyelid rejuvenation techniques have advanced dramatically in the last decade. These minimally invasive procedures can greatly improve a person’s self-confidence as well as vision. Refreshed, vibrant eyes give the appearance of youth and vitality and reveal a person’s true self. Dr. Anne Rowland is an Oculoplastic Surgeon with Eye Specialty Group. LIVING HEALTHY By Helena Geissler Shannon, MD
Ask an OBGYN What you need to know: From your daughter’s first visit to family planning Q. A t what age should a young woman see an OBGYN? We typically recommend initiating a visit with an OBGYN at 13–15 years old (or earlier if sexual activity is something to be addressed). The topics of periods, sexual activity, contraception, and sexually transmitted infections can be difficult subjects to broach with an adolescent. However, they are still necessary topics to address. We are here for parents to help facilitate this discussion. It is important a young female finds an OBGYN she is comfortable talking to and that she knows whatever is discussed during visits is confidential. Often girls are reluctant to bring up concerns and activities with their mothers. An OBGYN is a reliable source who can help guide them in lifestyle choices as well as make them comfortable in discussing female topics with their parents.
Q. Why would teenage girls seek out an OBGYN? Health, nutrition, what to expect with periods, and menstrual issues are common topics of discussion. More importantly teenagers need a venue to talk about safe sex practices, STD testing, and birth control options. It’s important to establish care with a women’s health professional with whom they feel comfortable discussing feminine matters.
Q. What are a teenage girl’s most common needs when going to an OBGYN? Many girls need help with managing painful, heavy, and/or irregular menstrual cycles. Most also want some form of contraception. Pap smear testing isn’t really an issue until age 21.
Q. Are OBGYNs seeing any new trends from younger patients? More young patients are starting to use LARC (long acting reversible contraceptives) such as IUDs (Mirena, Skyla, Kyleena) or implants (Nexplanon).
10
Q. What are common problems with young women trying to conceive? Ovulatory problems are some of the biggest issues faced by patients having trouble conceiving. Polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS) is a common cause of ovulatory dysfunction, as is obesity.
Q. Are there any new screening tests women need to know about before getting pregnant? A lot of this depends on family history. If the patient has a known familial history of heritable diseases, then preconception testing can identify those patients with a risk of having a fetus impacted by those diseases. Two of the more common disorders we encounter are sickle cell disease and cystic fibrosis. About 7–10 percent of African Americans have a sickle cell trait, and about 1/25 caucasian patients are cystic fibrosis carriers. The most important preconception counseling usually has to do with maternal comorbidity (diabetes, hypertension, asthma, obesity, psychiatric and seizure disorders, etc.) and optimization of disease control prior to conception, as opposed to screening tests.
Helena Geissler Shannon, M.D. is an OBGYN at Memphis Obstetrics & Gynecological Association (MOGA). For more information call 901.843.1500 or visit mogamd.com.

FIT MOMS
RUNNING IN “THE ZONE” By Christin Yates. Photo by Greg Hastings.
KRISTEN WRIGHT’S fitness journey began five years ago when she went to work for AutoZone. With a strong culture of wellness, AutoZone has many health and fitness programs and initiatives available to its employees, or “AutoZoners.” Kristen, the Senior Vice President and General Counsel & Secretary, was introduced to the Extra Milers running club—a large group of AutoZoners who train together and participate in several major races in the area. Prior to joining the Extra Milers, Kristen says she “hadn’t run a mile.” That changed as the team helped her develop a plan for her first 5k and a half marathon in the year following. Passionate about her family, work, fitness, and travel, 40-year-old Kristen trained for her first half marathon while on five continents. “I love to run and explore on my travels. It’s a great energizer and allows me to see cities from a different perspective,” says Kristen. As a natural goal-setter, Kristen thrives on creating visual training plans for races. She typically picks a race, backs out 10–12 weeks weeks, and maps out her training. Then, the mom of two tapes it in the bathroom mirror as a reminder not only to herself to keep up with training but also as an example to her children. Kristen typically runs 2–4 miles, 3–4 mornings per week with a long run on the weekend. “When I mark up my training log and post it for everyone to see, it serves as a reminder for myself and for my children to realize the dedication you need to reach a goal,” she says.
AutoZone as the presenting sponsor of the race, and Kristen, Chairmen Elect of the Memphis in May International Festival, looks forward to running the half marathon with fellow Extra Milers as well as runners from Colombia, this year’s Memphis in May honored country. “I actually started my training for the Great American River Run while in Colombia with the Memphis in May delegation, so it will be exciting to finish my training at the race in May,” Kristen says. Her children will also participate in the 5k for the second year in a row. Her twins are very competitive and enjoy doing races together and watching each other’s times. As a Senior Vice President at AutoZone as well as a wife and mother of two, Kristen keeps a busy schedule between work obligations and family time. She says a combination of running and yoga helps with stress management and allows her to be a better person in all aspects of her life. “Like most mothers, my driving motivation for what I do is to set a good example for my children. I want them to know that with hard work, determination, and a great support system, we can accomplish anything.”
Next on Kristen’s calendar is the Great American River Run on May 28, which culminates the annual Memphis in May events. “The GARR is one of my favorite new races, with a great route winding through Downtown Memphis and along the Mississippi Riverfront.”

FIT MOMS
Being Fit For Herself and Her Family By Christin Yates. Photo by Greg Hastings. Many new moms find it hard to get back in shape after having a child. With four children from ages 6–16, HEVEKIAH “PREVAIL” WALKER could easily let fitness fall off her radar. But this busy working wife and mom puts fitness first, and at age 35, Hevekiah is in the best shape of her life. After having her fourth child in 2011, Hevekiah decided to get healthier. Motivated to be around longer and have more energy for her family, she began weightlifting at the YMCA and running outside for cardio. Now, Hevekiah works out for an hour everyday, sometimes at home and other days at the Fogelman YMCA. She does weight training three times per week in addition to cardio. She also recently started kickboxing classes and continues to run outdoors as much as possible. She plans to run her first 5k in 2017. With four children, a job, and a husband, Hevekiah tries to squeeze in workouts after dropping off the kids at school. While she works out by herself on weekdays, her husband, Jay, typically works out with her on the weekends. Because she leads by example, Hevekiah’s children are also active. The two older kids work out and run together, and the younger children enjoy running and playing outside. “By working out and being fit, I have more energy, and I’m more in shape to keep up with my four children,” Hevekiah says. Hevekiah cooks at home and makes healthy choices for her family, like baking instead of frying. They typically eat a lot of ground turkey, turkey bacon, and other lean meats. She enjoys making tilapia, salmon, and baked chicken with sides like asparagus, broccoli, and brown rice. Hevekiah also drinks water throughout day and has noticed her children cut back on juices and other drinks in exchange for water. “They see me be more serious about what I eat, and they try to eat less unhealthy snacks as well.” As for her health and fitness goals, Hevekiah wants to maintain her current fitness level, continue to tone her body, and improve her overall health. She is also pursuing a career in personal training. “I want to be able to help others transform their lives, both physically and mentally.” With a passion for modeling, the YMCA recently hired Hevekiah to take photos to promote classes for the facility. She has also been writing poetry since age 12 and started putting it to music nine years ago as a rapper under the name “Prevail.”

THE ULTRA(RUNNING) MOM By Christin Yates. Photo by Philip Murphy.
LAUREN PASLEY, 51, and her son began running when her daughter, Colleen, started running track in middle school. Seeing her daughter enjoy the sport ignited a fire in Lauren to get into running herself. However, just as Lauren was getting her legs under her, she was diagnosed with a brain tumor that put her running plans on hold for six months. By December of 2008, Lauren was back to good health and back to hitting the pavement. She ran her first half marathon with both her children in 2008 and later ran the New York City Marathon in 2011 and the Chicago Marathon in 2012. After the Chicago Marathon, she wanted to test her limits and endurance by training for a 100-mile ultramarathon. She succeeded in her goal, and her daughter joined in for the last 25 miles of the race to help pace her mom to the finish. “The runners go through so much on those trails, and you see the different stages of it,” says her daughter, Colleen. “I think one of the reasons I love being her pacer is because I get to take care of her for once.” To date, Lauren has completed five 100-mile ultramarathons and is training for her next one in June at Bryce Canyon. Training for ultramarathons is no easy task, especially with a demanding career as an attorney. When in serious training mode, Lauren logs 75-80 miles per week. “I train to better myself. If you love doing it, that beats everything,” she says. “Initially, the challenge of completing an ultra was my favorite part. After completing my first 100-mile race, it has become more about weathering the ups and downs and mastering my skill. You have to be able to deal with all the elements like rain, cold, and heat. Everything is a guess.” Lauren says running and training with her daughter has had a positive impact on their relationship. Crossing the finish line of all five ultras with Colleen has been a special bonding experience for the two of them. “She doesn’t know it, but I cried when she finished her first 100-miler,” says Colleen. Lauren’s son, Sean, also runs with her on occasion, and they’ve run the St. Jude half together. “As a parent I can tell them to do things, but it’s better to lead by example and really demonstrate to them that I’m challenging myself to achieve my goals,” Lauren says.

BUSY MOM BRINGS CYCLEBAR TO MEMPHIS By Christin Yates. Photo by Philip Murphy.
HALEY ARTHUR is a wife, mom of four, and owner of Cyclebar in Germantown. However, this busy 30-year-old claims she wasn’t always into fitness. Haley played various sports throughout high school and on club teams at the University of Arkansas. She even cheered for the University of Memphis after moving back home to be with her nowhusband, BJ. Despite dabbling in triathlons after college, she never fell in love with a sport or fitness routine she wanted to pursue. “I need to be pushed to do well, and I didn’t want to spend hours running or on the bike away from my family,” Haley says. She soon discovered fitness classes, and for the next few years that’s how she stayed in shape. At some point, the stay-at-home mom of four wanted to find a way to make more income for her family without sacrificing a lot of time with her children. After reading about a new cycling studio soon to be franchised, she and her husband traveled to Cincinnati to check out a class. “We were immediately hooked by the lights, atmosphere, and music,” says Haley. The two decided to bring Cyclebar to Memphis. Haley, along with her husband and parents, David and Molly Schay, opened CycleBar in Germantown in May 2016. Cyclebar is a 50-minute premium indoor cycling class set to music. Participants are provided with everything they need, including clip-in shoes, a water bottle, and a towel. Each instructor builds his or her own playlist set, and participants are encouraged to cycle along with the music to hit the revolutions per minute (RPMs) to stay with the beat. “Each person does his or her own workout, which makes Cyclebar great for people at any fitness level,” Haley says. After class, everyone is e-mailed their workout statistics, such as heart rate and calories burned, as well as a link to download the playlist on Spotify. While Haley was a little anxious about her new schedule and how her kids would adapt, she says she enjoys being able to interact with other adults, provide for her family, and also get in a great workout. She typically works and takes classes in the early mornings before her kids wake up in addition to two evenings each week. “Having Cyclebar definitely makes me a better mom. I’m less irritable, I’ve made new friends, and I don’t have to sacrifice being away from my kids all day.” To learn more about Cyclebar, visit germantown.cyclebar.com.

COACH’S CORNER
RUNNING YOUR FASTEST 5K By Andrew Chumney The days are getting longer, temperatures are on the rise, and the summer 5K season is just around the corner. For many, after parties (read: libations) and an emphasis on simply maintaining some fitness take precedence over actually accomplishing running goals. Runners often take these summer 5Ks less seriously than the half and full marathons they run the rest of the year. It’s as if they just need to keep themselves busy until ramping up the long runs again in the fall. However, not taking the shorter races seriously hinders your development as a runner. It might sound less impressive to your non-runner friends to say you’re training for a 5K, but dedicating part of the year specifically to 5K training can actually make you better at the longer stuff. The trick is train correctly to get the most you can out of the short races. There are two things I stress to runners interested in both running a fast 5K and also using the 5K to develop as a stronger, more efficient athlete. First, completely abandon the longer races during 5K season. Don’t think about the fall. Often runners don’t want to lose their long run fitness during the summer, so they sort
24
of quasi marathon or half marathon train to be prepared for the fall buildup. Besides throwing in a cookie cutter speed workout here or there, their training week remains largely the same as the rest of the year. That is not how to train for a 5K. Likewise, it’s not the most effective way to train for a marathon. Go all in on the 5K for a period of time, and I promise it’s far easier to get that long stamina back than it is to get the speed back you lost pounding those slow miles into your legs “keeping your mileage up.” The second thing I suggest is to mix it up. Everyday you run during 5K season, do something different. They don’t have to be difficult things, but each day should have a purpose. Runners who like to turn their brains off and just run easy because it requires little thought or creativity struggle with this. Sheer mileage isn’t as important, and you can afford some shorter, more interesting runs. Keep your long run day in place but try shortening it and speeding it up a bit. Or do a tempo run with a long warm up and cool down rather than just running the same pace for the entire run.
Do you have questions about getting started or finding a plan to work for you? Stop in and talk to anyone on our staff. We’ll be happy to help!
Most runners are familiar with the idea of having a track workout day each week, but it’s the days not on the track or doing a long run that can really help you out. Throw in something fun like a short descending pace tempo run or some uphill sprints. My favorite thing to do is incorporate ten 30 second or 1 minute intervals into an easy run with a 1 minute rest. Little things like this don’t tire you out as much as a full workout, but they do wonders for form and efficiency. Basically, have a goal everyday other than just simply getting in mileage, and you might surprise yourself with a faster 5K.
Andrew Chumney began working in specialty running in January of 2007. At Fleet Feet Memphis, he is sharing his passions for running with our training groups. If you’ve come to our Thursday night speed workouts or the Saturday morning long run, you’ve definitely benefitted from Andrew’s expertise.

KIMBERLY YOUNG, RUNNER & CROSSFITTER AGE: 52 BIRTHPLACE: Memphis, TN OCCUPATION: Chief Financial Officer, Baptist Medical Group SPORT: Running & CrossFit FAMILY AND PETS: Husband, Tony; Two sons, Hunter (24) and Jake (21); and dog, Jack FIT CLUB: In the past I’ve run with Memphis in Motion (Mark Higgonbotham’s group) and with the Breakaway group in Germantown, but due to my work schedule, I mostly train solo. WW BRAGGING RIGHTS: The first half of 2016 was a great running year for me. I started with the Los Angeles Marathon in February the day after watching the USA Marathon Olympic Trials. I got PRs in several of my favorite spring races (Shiloh Park 4 miler 1st Place Female overall and Coca Cola 10K in Corinth 1st Place Female Grandmasters Overall) and ran the Brooklyn Half in May. I ran my first 25K Trail Run in Mountain Home, AR (David’s Trail) in January. FAVORITE FITNESS ACCOMPLISHMENT: My St. Jude Half Marathon time in 2015 qualified me to run the New York Marathon. MOST MEMORABLE WW EVENT: I competed in a CrossFit Competition partnering with my sister, Brittany, in Nashville back in November. We placed 2nd in our combined age group (90-99). My sister has been doing CrossFit for many years and is such an awesome teammate and competitor. This year we plan to crush the 100 and older age group. I ❤ RUNNING & CROSSFIT: Running is such a stress reliever. It really calms me down before or after a stressful day at work. Cross Fit “fits” my personality. It changes and is challenging every time. It provides the social atmosphere I don’t have with running. FITNESS MOTIVATION: Being fit changes my whole perspective on life. It inspires me to eat better and gives me confidence to deal with the stressful parts of my career. I was very athletic growing up and participated in just about any sport I could find. Running and doing CrossFit gets me back to the days of having “practice” after school and “games” or races to plan and train for. CROSS TRAIN: I do CrossFit 3 times a week at CrossFit Collierville PRE-RACE RITUALS: I have to lay out my clothes, pin on my bib, and lay out my fuel. I am very organized and not a happy camper if I feel disorganized or rushed before a race. WW MUST-HAVE’S: Brooks Ghost Running Shoes, Garmin 610 for long runs, Apple Watch for shorter runs, Nike Metcons CrossFit Shoes, and anything from Lululemon! NEXT WW CHALLENGE: Coca Cola 10K in Corinth MOTTO: “Teamwork makes the Dreamwork.” I stole this from a coworker several years ago, and I have to admit it’s one of my favorites.

CREATING A BALANCED SALAD

If you’re left feeling hungry and unsatisfied after eating a salad, chances are it’s lacking the proper components. Here are some tips for a satisfying, balanced, and nutrient packed salad in no time. GREENS BE THE BASE 1 LET Add variety using kale, spinach, endive, arugula, and leaf lettuce. Opt for darker and more colorful greens. Add fresh herbs for a flavorful bite.
