“JUST SAY NO” STARBUCKS’ PUMPKIN SPICE LATTE
CALORIES . . . . . . . . . 420
Starbucks brought their super popular, and even more profitable, pumpkin spice latte back to the plate a little earlier this season. And, hey, why not? They sold approximately $80 million dollars worth of the stuff last fall. Speaking of stuff, it’s loaded with calories and sugar (see chart) and plenty of other ingredients that raise questions if not eyebrows. Do we really want to drink caramel color (class IV) made with ammonia, high fructose corn syrup, milk with GMO’s, preservatives, sulfites, and artificial flavors? And, people, there is absolutely no pumpkin in the “pumpkin” spice latte! Make this your season to “just say no” to over indulging, over spending, and over imbibing this holiday season. Well, at least at Starbucks.

FIT NEWS
Get Your Booty to the Barre There’s a new fitness craze that has come to Memphis called the bootybarre®. The name may imply that the class is lighthearted and narrowly focused specifically on the booty, but this fun and dynamic class format will tighten and tone the entire body while elevating your heart rate for noticeable, quick results. Developed by Master Pilates instructor Tracey Mallett, the bootybarre® is a ballet-bar-based program that applies the fundamentals of Pilates and yoga with dance, helping to strengthen and sculpt the body. Mallet, a former dancer, created the program after learning that many Pilates students were looking for a workout that would give them cardiovascular exercise in addition to the benefits of Pilates. After trying out a few classes with people all over the country, she came up with the bootybarre® in 2009. The bootybarre® classes apply toning, cardiovascular- and flexibility-enhancing components to the fundamentals of traditional barre-type classes. Unlike other barre programs, the bootybarre® incorporates more functional movement, closely
mimicking real life movements. With this larger range of motion comes increased cardio, which allows for more fat burn and faster results together with a decreased risk of injuries. Choreographed to music, the bootybarre® not only has great technical benefits but it also offers a unique fun factor that keeps people engaged and motivated throughout the class. “Our clients love bootybarre and leave the class exhausted with big smiles on their faces,” said Ragan Magness, a bootybarre® instructor. “The music is energizing, and the class is over before you know it. Bootybarre is equal parts fun and challenging.”
Jennifer Smith, Group Fitness Manager at Q4Fitness. “I love that bootybarre can be done at different intensity levels so all participants can achieve success and quickly improve their heart health, strength, posture, balance, and flexibility.” Two of the most popular bootybarre® class formats are BootyBarre Plus and Flex and Flow, both 55-minute workouts. Bootybarre Plus involves deep muscle toning along with intervals of cardiovascular work
Currently the bootybarre® is offered at Q4Fitness in Laurelwood (formerly DAC Fitness). The classes are limited to 10 people to provide more personalized attention and to maintain the safety and effectiveness of each participant in the session. “The bootybarre program is the perfect addition to our existing class rotation and will help our members stay motivated and inspired to workout,” said

Memphis Area Craft Breweries, Restaurants Unite to Fight Sickle Cell
8
A sampling of Memphis-area brewers, purveyors, and restaurateurs are contributing to the Taste the Flavors Brew Festival, a charity event benefiting the Sickle Cell Foundation of Tennessee. The event will be held Saturday, November 8, from 6:00 PM – 9:00 PM at Just for Lunch in Chickasaw Oaks Mall. The Foundation funds patient care, social services, medical research, and promotes understanding of sickle cell disease, an inherited blood disorder. Local craft breweries, High Cotton Brewing Co., Ghost River Brewing, and Memphis Made Brewing as well as local distributor AS Barboro are providing refreshments, and Aldo’s Pizza, DeJaVu Restaurant, Just For Lunch, Moe’s Southwest Grill, and Texas de Brazil are providing food. Tickets for the
all-you-can-eat-and-drink event are $35 and are available online through SickleCellTN.org or via the Taste the Flavors Brew Fest event page on Facebook. Sickle cell disease is one of the most common inherited diseases in America, and the most frequent among African-Americans. About 2.5 million Americans carry the gene and 100,000 live with the disease. Sickle cell disease prevents red blood cells from working properly, and individuals with it can suffer a lifetime of debilitating pain and life-threatening symptoms.
at an upbeat tempo and quick pace set to motivating music. A small ball and light weights are generally used in this class along with the ballet bar. Bootybarre Flex and Flow fuses ballet, yoga, and Pilates for deep muscle toning. These classes are suitable for all fitness levels and use a small ball and an exercise band. To try a free bootybarre® class, contact Q4Fitness at info@q4fitness.com or call (901) 767-8437.

Lendermon Sports Medicine to Offer Advanced Technology
10
More than 10 million people in the United States suffer from severe pain due to tennis elbow, golfer’s elbow, jumper’s knee, Achilles tendonitis, and plantar fasciitis, keeping them from living an active lifestyle. TENEX Health TX System, developed in collaboration with the Mayo Clinic, offers a new, minimally invasive procedure to help deal with these ailments. Unlike conventional treatment methods, this new technique is far less invasive and causes relatively little pain with a very short recovery time. There is a small incision under local anesthesia and a tiny needle is inserted. “It’s a small instrument that vibrates at a high frequency to break up and remove damaged tissue, while at the same time preserving healthy tissue and stimulating a healing
response,” said Dr. Laura Lendermon of Lendermon Sports Medicine. The procedure is FDA approved and only takes about 20 minutes without requiring sutures. Many patients can resume full activities in less than six weeks. “This is a great advancement in medicine for many athletes who suffer from overuse injuries,” Lendermon said. “I am excited about being able to provide this advanced treatment option for tendon injuries, and am loving seeing my patients get active again.” Dr. Laura Lendermon is trained in using TENEX Health TX Systems. COMMON RUNNING INJURIES AND THEIR TREATMENT In the Physical Therapy Department at Semmes-Murphey Clinic, we often treat patients who come to us with running-related pain issues. Our process is to assess the problem, create a treatment plan to resolve the issues, and provide suggestions to avoid any future injury.
ASSESSING THE INJURY. Typical running injuries include knee pain, lower-back pain, hip pain, plantar fasciitis (heel pain), Iliotibial band syndrome, patellar tendonitis, chondromalacia, and Achilles tendonitis. Through the use of biomechanical evaluation (including observation of running form), we are able to identify the mechanical fault that leads to the injuries listed above. Identifying these faults allows us to construct an individualized treatment program that addresses the cause of the injury. This is a necessary step in the recovery process as well as preventing further injuries. Should the assessment indicate, we have an easy access Neck & Back Care Clinic available in the same building with neuro physicians available.
DESIGNING A TREATMENT PLAN. Treatment plans typically include a combination of manual therapy to address soft tissue dysfunction and restore normal joint mobility, and therapeutic exercise to improve flexibility in the joints that need to be mobile and strength and stability in the joints that need to be stable during running. We also discuss self-care techniques and a home therapeutic exercise programs utilizing foam rollers and self-acupressure and soft tissue techniques. And, finally, we perform a shoe evaluation and orthotics review to ensure proper footwear and foot support.
proper running form, using proper footwear/ shoes, and being sensitive to muscle imbalance issues and addressing them. It’s always a good idea to treat running pain early on before longer-term damage may be done. Physical therapy is available with many health insurance plans without the need of a physician referral. Ben Graves is the Director of Physical Therapy at Semmes-Murphey Clinic. Call the PT direct line at (901) 259-8401 for more information, or visit Semmes-Murphey.com.
Depending on the severity of the injury, patients may return to normal activity in 7-14 days.
AVOIDING FUTURE INJURY. Patients are encouraged to follow reasonable preventive techniques with running, or with any strenuous sport. Those could include a implementing a structured training program with cross training, avoiding overtraining, using proper stretching techniques, using

H E A LT H Y L I V I N G By Melody A. Barron, DDS
TREATING TMJ If there is a disorder that has been under recognized and misunderstood, it is Temporomandibular Joint Disorder (TMD), or what’s called TMJ by the layperson. TMJ stands for TemporoMandibular Joints — the two joints located directly in front of our ears that allow our lower jaw to open and close. The disorder, however, goes far beyond those two joints. This disorder is the result of inflammation that affects and alerts the nervous system to respond in a particular manner. It is not simply the problem of teeth coming together that it was once thought to be. A person may not be aware they have symptoms until an event (like a big yawn, extended dental appointment, intubation for anesthesia for surgery, or some minor trauma) pushes the joints to the extreme and the person’s joints are not able to compensate.
When the disorder is present symptoms may increase and decrease. Rarely does it simply disappear on its own. Instead, it usually returns with an increase in severity of symptoms. This disorder very often coexists with sleep-disordered breathing, such as snoring and apnea. If any of the following symptoms affect you in your daily life or if you take regular pain medicine or sleep aids, you may be suffering from TMD or Sleep-Disordered Breathing, • R ecurring or chronic headaches. (A headache even one time a week is not normal.) • Neck pain or stiffness. • E arache or ear symptoms of stuffiness or ringing. • Facial pain. • Jaw joint sounds of clicking,
popping or grating. • Limited ability to open or close mouth. • Jaw locking, opened or closed. • Sensitive, loose, or worn down teeth.

• Pain or soreness in the TM Joints.

Both males and females suffer from the disorder, but there seems to a predominance of females. Many people assume these symptoms have other origins and take medications for these individual symptoms (symptom treatment) when, in fact, they may be a collection of symptoms of TMJ Disorder or Sleep-Disordered Breathing. Very often the patient has come in for an evaluation when the disorder has been present for many, many years. These symptoms have taken their toll on the body since the medications only reduce the symptoms, but the disorder may have caused permanent changes.
A good example of permanent change is the arthritic changes in the spine from forward head posture due to TM Joint pain and poor ability for a person to breath through their nose. The person then begins to develop lower back pain from this prolonged postural change. As I treat a patient, they begin to have a reversal of postural change that then needs to be addressed. It depends on how long the person has been able to compensate for the postural change as to how much physical change has permanently occurred. Children also suffer from these disorders and should be screened and treated as early as possible. The good news is that when evaluated and diagnosed properly there is an answer and help available. There is no dedicated specialty in dentistry for this treatment, so a person should seek out a dentist who is well trained and well versed in the diagnosis and treatment of this disorder. Dr. Melody Barron is a dentist, owner, and director of the TMJ and Sleep Therapy Centre of Memphis. For more information call (901) 380-0734 or visit MemphisTMJ.com.
LIFE BEGINS WHEN PAIN ENDS TMJ Disorder is a disorder that is often accompanied by otherwise unexplained headaches, ear pain, poor sleep, jaw pain, head, neck and facial pain. It is often misdiagnosed and treated for it’s individual symptoms.
THERE IS AN ANSWER! Dr. Melody Barron’s practice is dedicated and focused on the treatment of TMJ Disorder and Sleep Apnea by Oral Appliance Therapy.

AN (IRON)MAN AND HIS CAUSE Being active benefits the athlete, but being active for a cause extends beyond the athlete and helps the masses. Reed Walters, 45, president and CEO of Sector Capital Management, is an athlete who stays active for a cause. He pushes himself physically and mentally to find a cure for Parkinson’s disease. “It [Parkinson’s disease] has had a pretty significant impact in my life. I lost my grandfather to it when I was 13. I missed out on a lot of time with him,” Walters said. “My father has it now, and it is creating difficulties for him.” Parkinson’s disease is a chronic, degenerative neurological disorder that affects nerve cells in the brain. Risk factors vary from genetics, heredity, and exposure to certain pesticides. The Michael J. Fox Foundation, a foundation dedicated to finding a cure for Parkinson’s disease, states the disease impacts one in 100 individuals over the age of 60, or roughly one million Americans.
HEALTH+FITNESS | November 2014
“Following through on my commitment to help my father, there wasn’t more that I could do other then be supportive in addition to taking care of him,” Walters said. “I wanted to make a strong statement of my commitment, which meant raising money for a cure.”
16
While hopelessness may set in for loved ones of individuals with Parkinson’s disease, Walters found a way to channel that feeling of hopelessness by raising money to help find a cure. His means of raising money was tackling back-to-back Ironman’s. “This endeavor gave me something more active and tangible to help,” Walters said. Walters regularly trains with a local triathlon team, Memphis Thunder Racing, which got him in shape both physically and mentally. “We had nearly 40 members of Memphis Thunder Racing compete in Ironman
Chattanooga. This gave me a big boost of encouragement during the race,” Walters said. With the support of his family and friends, Walters completed the race in Chattanooga and one in Louisville. During the Louisville race the temperature reached 98 degrees and the terrain began to take a toll on his legs.
“I have come to realize these races are much like life. It is not about running the perfect race, but rather doing your best and showing character along the way regardless of what happens,” Walters said. “When confronted with a problem or tough situation, it is how you handle it and act that matters most.”
By Erica Walters
While Walters does not have the disease, he still approaches it as a tough situation, in which faith keeps him strong and fighting for his loved ones and others impacted by the disease. Donations are still being accepted. To help Team Fox, visit the donation page for Team Fox at MichaelJFox. org/get-involved/teamfox.php.
“They cramped up so bad,” Walters said. “They were like pretzels, and I still had 26 miles to run in extreme heat. It didn’t look good, but I remained calm, trusted in the Lord, and began the process of taking in salts, hydrating, and massaging out the cramps.” Eventually Walters’ legs got to the point where he could start running and finish the race strong. “Each race had different extreme challenges that briefly shook my confidence and threatened my ability to finish,” Walters said. Similarly, in Chattanooga Walters pulled off another victory after becoming ill during the course. “I lost so much fluid and couldn’t keep anything down,” he said. “I stayed calm. After a couple of hours, and changing my nutrition, I ran the second part of the marathon strong, finishing within six minutes of my best Ironman time.” In all his efforts, Walters set a goal to raise $3,000 for Team Fox, a donation team for The Michael J. Fox foundation. He surpassed that goal with a total of $3,400. By using his athletic ability for a greater cause, Walters went from completing one Ironman in 2008, to completing two Ironman competitions, one in August and one in September. To break it down, that’s a total of 4.8 miles swimming, 52.4 miles running, and 224 miles biking in less than 48 hours.
“When confronted with a problem or tough situation, it is how you handle it and act that matters most.” – Reed Walters

RIDE, DISMOUNT, RUN, JUMP, REMOUNT, RIDE, REPEAT By Hailey Thomas
Professional riders from around the country and local amateurs will compete in the 28th Annual OICX Outdoors, Inc. Cyclocross Championships on Sunday, November 9th. Hundreds of spectators with cowbells (no, not Mississippi State fans) will be cheering at Greenbelt Park on Mud Island. The Mississippi River provides a picture-perfect backdrop for the autumn event, which is the longestrunning Cyclocross Bicycle Race in the country. The OICX Race draws both elite and amateur athletes who race on the same course. A Cyclocross course consists of many short-course laps (1.5-2 miles), featuring pavement, wooded trails, grass, steep hills, sharp turns, and obstacles that require the rider to quickly dismount and carry the bike while navigating the obstruction before remounting for a specified amount of time (usually 30 minutes to 1 hour). The race takes place in the fall and winter months. For more than 20 years, Joe Royer, race director and coowner of Outdoors, Inc., has traveled and ridden in a multitude of bike races throughout Europe and North America. He is dedicated to bringing the best experiences back home to make the Bluff City’s Cyclocross Championship a world-class event.
HEALTH+FITNESS | November 2014
The children’s race, which Royer is quite proud of, has grown exponentially. “Young riders are getting involved in the sport at an earlier age,” Royer said. “They have the opportunity to ride on the same course as the pros. Not many sports can boast that.”
18

Fitness Fuel: Eat Like an Athlete By Robin Beaudoin
Trainers and athletes agree that you only get out what you put in. This notion applies not only to effort and training, but to fuel for the body as well. Selecting the right nutrition to fuel your workout may be as important as choosing diesel or unleaded for your car. It can shut you down, or it can enhance your performance. Pinpoint ideal foods and electrolyte replacements to best balance any level of fitness, from novice to professional. Suggestions for the budding or expert athlete were offered by Memphis H+F readers from across the country and right here at home in Memphis.
Eat like a triathlete. Often it is not so much about what you eat as when you eat. Cyclists and runners who go longer than 90 minutes should not only have a pre-workout snack, but prepare to slam an electrolyte replacement gel or a sports drink to help maintain healthy blood sugar at intervals during long distances. Many replenish sugars and proteins with childhood favorites such as fig cookies or chocolate milk.
“You need to fuel your body like a steam engine on a train. Feed it the right fuel at the right time so your engine burns at its hottest. “ - Marc L., Philadelphia, PA
Eat like a runner. “I eat more carbohydrates 2-3 days before a long run. On the morning of the run I usually have either a PB&J or a bagel with Nutella or cream cheese. I also increase water intake to around 64 oz. a day. During the run I use Honey Stinger chews every four miles to continue fueling.” - Lisa W., Cordova, TN
HEALTH+FITNESS | November 2014
“I drink half a cup of coffee, then head out. I stay well hydrated while I run, and then have something with lots of carbs and protein for breakfast when I get back. One of my favorite runner fuel foods is a tortilla smeared with peanut butter and a banana rolled in the middle.”
20
- Meggie K., Cherry Hill, TN
Eat like a bodybuilder. To prep for a muscle-building workout, focus on a balance of proteins, fats, and carbohydrates pre-workout. One to two hours prior, a satisfying steel cut oatmeal with peanut butter or protein smoothie works just fine.
“Before lifting, protein, and after lifting, protein. I like eggs before, and Light Muscle Milk or a smoothie with protein powder after (less than one hour after for optimal results).“ - Stephanie K., Germantown, TN
N UTR ITION
Eat like a swimmer. “I was never big on fueling before practice or meets when I was training (swimming). It was just a personal choice. Everyone is different. Lots of fluids and maybe a light snack before, but I always refueled with a big meal after. I don’t have an absolute go-to food but tend to stick to a 40:30:30 ratio for those meals.“ - Jennifer B., Germantown, TN
Eat like a yogi/yogini. “Yoga requires feeding the body as well as the soul. Hemp protein powders, mineral water, cold-pressed juices and a shot of espresso with a twist of lemon (for alkalinity).” - Amy P., Memphis, TN
“For Bikram I drink plenty of water but eat no food in the three hours prior to practice, but guzzle a half-frozen G2 and a Clif Bar immediately after.” - John M., Los Angeles, CA
“This is food for the soul. Before I teach yoga, I get present in my body, close my eyes, say a prayer, and open my heart to the experience and to God. Namaste! “ - Alma C., Germantown, TN
Eat like a circuit trainer/kickboxer. Plant-based proteins are a favorite.
- Snow J., Memphis, TN
Critical to any athlete is the long-term diet. Pretend your body is a steam train, chugging along the track. In order to make it up that mountain ahead, you need hot, slow-burning coal. A few cords of wood may burn hot for a moment, but will cool that fire almost as quickly as it was lit. Your training food should also not be a flash-in-the-pan. Quicker-burning calories from carbohydrates can assist athletes in short bursts of activity, such as weight lifting, Crossfit, or the first leg of a big race. However, endurance activities like longdistance biking, running, or swimming also benefit from slower-burning, efficient fuel. Refuel with the proper fuel every time. Those worried about overindulging post-workout can plan the post-workout refuel as a part of their regular meal.
HEALTH+FITNESS | November 2014
“The best fuel I’ve found for right before a workout is a handful of nuts. It’s important to me not to be hungry, but certainly not anywhere close to full either.”

A NEW KIND OF FITNESS Interview and Photography by Jen Russell
AMBER LEA, 29 WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE STYLE OF DANCE/ FITNESS, AND WHY? It changes back and forth between belly dance and Tahitian dance. They are both a great workout and fun to do. WHAT DO YOU TEACH, AND WHAT DO YOU ENJOY MOST ABOUT TEACHING? I teach both belly dance and Tahitian, and some hula. These dance styles have always made me a happy and healthier person, and I like giving that to others and seeing the smiles they make while they dance. WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE THING TO TEACH? Right now it’s Tahitian. HOW DO YOU STAY FIT? By dancing for several hours a day and visiting the gym as often as I can. I also enjoy doing yoga, Pilates, and Brazilian Butt Lift. WHAT IS A FITNESS TIP YOU WOULD GIVE? Sometimes we get tired or lazy and think we can’t get to that workout or that dance practice, but if we just push ourselves and do it anyway, we get through it, enjoy it, and feel five times better afterwards. You will feel grateful that you did.
HOW DID YOU GET INTO THE STYLE OF PERFORMANCE/MOVEMENT THAT YOU DO? I just remember seeing belly dancers perform and wanted to try it. I started taking classes and absolutely loved it. I learned Tahitian through The Dancing Fire, the company I perform with. I also took several classes from professional Tahitian dancer Leolani Gallardo in LA. WHAT CLASSES DO YOU OFFER? Both beginner and intermediate Tribal Fusion Belly Dance, and also intro to Tahitian and Polynesian Fitness. HOW COULD SOMEONE GET INVOLVED IN ONE OF YOUR CLASSES? Contact me at amberleabiz@gmail.com or message me on Facebook. WHAT ARE SOME OTHER SKILLS THAT YOU HAVE THAT PEOPLE MAY NOT KNOW ABOUT? I took some Modern Dance and Ballet growing up, and played the Cello until I was about 25. I also have currently begun to do some acrobatics to build my flexibility. FAVORITE QUOTE FROM SOMEONE WHO INSPIRES YOU: “Life is not about finding yourself, it’s about creating yourself.” I don’t know who said it, but I have always loved that quote.
RACHEL EHEMANN, 32
HEALTH+FITNESS | November 2014
WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE STYLE OF DANCE/ FITNESS, AND WHY? Tribal Fusion Belly Dance and Modern Dance. They both teach a certain set of skills. One teaches isolation and how to control your body, and the other teaches you big, expressive movements that show you how to be free with your body.
22
WHAT DO YOU TEACH, AND WHAT DO YOU ENJOY MOST ABOUT TEACHING? Tribal Fusion Belly Dance. Learning to belly dance is a confidence booster. The more someone learns how to move their body in beautiful yet challenging ways the more their confidence grows. This may be my very favorite thing about teaching and why I started teaching. I enjoy watching students grow and learn to perform so that they can share their newfound passions with others. WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE THING TO TEACH? Tribal Fusion Belly Dance. HOW DO YOU STAY FIT? Teaching and learning other dance forms. WHAT IS A FITNESS TIP YOU WOULD GIVE? Try different things and see what you really enjoy the most. Remember, everything takes time. Be patient with yourself in the beginning and allow yourself and your body time to learn the movements.
HOW DID YOU GET INTO THE STYLE OF PERFORMANCE/MOVEMENT THAT YOU DO? At the age 15, I saw a belly dancer perform and was mesmerized. From that moment I have been drawn to the mysterious nature of belly dance. WHAT CLASSES DO YOU OFFER? Beginner and Intermediate Tribal Fusion Belly Dance, Improvisation with American Tribal Style Cues (ATS), and Choreography. HOW COULD SOMEONE GET INVOLVED IN ONE OF YOUR CLASSEs? Classes are drop-ins on Sundays. For more information contact me at rachel@navasanctum. com or visit our website at NavaSanctum.com. WHAT ARE SOME OTHER SKILLS THAT YOU HAVE THAT PEOPLE MAY NOT KNOW ABOUT? I took gymnastics as a child and would “choreograph” routines and force my mother to watch. I would spend hours in my room planning moves to C&C Music Factory and would get so excited for my debut! I am also a tattoo artist, costume designer, and jewelry maker. FAVORITE QUOTE FROM SOMEONE WHO INSPIRES YOU: “Dreams can come true if you have the courage to pursue them.” – Unknown “Don’t compromise yourself. You’re all you got.” – Janis Joplin

I was a gymnast growing up and I can still do a lot of gymnastics. I’m also excellent on the trampoline, and I’m an aspiring “super mom.”
WHAT DO YOU TEACH, AND WHAT DO YOU ENJOY MOST ABOUT TEACHING? Aerial dance and aerial acrobatics because I like watching students accomplish something they’ve been working toward.
HOW DID YOU GET INTO THE STYLE OF PERFORMANCE/MOVEMENT THAT YOU DO? I saw a flyer at my yoga studio (Midtown Yoga) and an advertisement for an aerial workshop (Circus Arts). I thought it sounded interesting, and I’ve been hooked ever since.
WHAT IS A FITNESS TIP YOU WOULD GIVE? Find something that interests you, and stick with it long enough to get good at it.
WHAT CLASSES DO YOU OFFER? Mixed-level aerial instruction on Lyra/hoop and Silks.

WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE STYLE OF DANCE/ FITNESS, AND WHY? Partner acrobatics because it’s no longer about you. It’s about accomplishing something together.
HOW DID YOU GET INTO THE STYLE OF DANCE/FITNESS THAT YOU DO? A girl that I was dating in Seattle mentioned AcroYoga and I went to a class. I was not impressed. Then I moved to Memphis in 2011 and went to a yoga class, and the instructor said there is an AcroYoga teacher here in Memphis so I started doing Acro. A few months later we were asked to do a Burnish III show at Levitt Shell, and that was my first performance.
HOW COULD SOMEONE GET INVOLVED IN ONE OF YOUR CLASSES Contact me on Facebook — Jester Maxwelli. You can also visit Midtown Yoga’s site for Sunday classes.

I will be teaching my own class starting in November/December, and will also offer private lessons. WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE THING TO TEACH? Body awareness, which includes teaching how we move through space, or proprioception.

MUST-HAVE RUNNING GADGETS
By Marcia Scott
Running is one of the most cost-effective sports there is. You really only need running shoes and some athletic apparel to hit the road and get in a workout, but there are a number of gadgets and accessories that can definitely enhance your run, making it more enjoyable, comfortable, and possibly even speedier. Whether you’re keeping track of your pace or making sure you’re seen at night, there are several pieces of gear that can help runners get the most out of their training.
VÍVOFIT: We’ve all heard of FitBits, but the Garmin vívofit is a little bit more sophisticated. Have you ever been curious about just how many steps you cover in a day? Or maybe how many calories you have burned today? The vivofit offers heart rate monitoring capabilities along with sleep and activity tracking. Plus, it integrates with Garmin Connect for all you Garmin junkies out there.
LIGHTSPUR: A popular safety gadget this season from Nathan, these lights clip to the back of your shoe so that others can see you when running at night or early morning. There are also vests, handheld lights, clip-on apparel lights, and other reflective options to stay safe in the dark.
GPS WATCHES: GPS watches from Garmin, Nike, and Soleus offer runners the ability to see real-time pace, average pace per mile, distance, and, in some cases, to set intervals as well as see cadence and other metrics. Some of these watches are so intuitive they’ll basically all but go on your run for you.
EARBUDS:
HEALTH+FITNESS | November 2014
ELECTRONICS CARRY CASES:
28
For those who carry a phone for music (or emergencies) on their run, arm bands and hand-held holders make it easy to carry your electronics with you. Details that include additional storage, touch-sensitive windows, and various sizes make for several great options.
SHADES: Tifosi and Oakley both offer models that provide polarized lenses to help reduce glare. Select models from Tifosi also come with multiple lenses to interchange depending on the sunlight and conditions.
If you choose to safely tune in and tune out while you run, you know it’s difficult to find comfortable headphones that stay in place. Yurbuds specializes in earbuds for athletes and come in a range of sizes so you can find the perfect fit. Their unique design allows ambient noise to filter through your audio.
FLIPBELT: From keys to Gu, a phone or even pepper spray, Flipbelts offer plenty of storage to carry just about anything you would need with you on a long run or race. Two entry points make it easy to insert items, then simply flip the belt over to keep them safe and secure while on your run.

RECENT WW EVENTS: Meritan Midnight Bike Ride, Breakaway Bardog 5k, and the Navy Nautical 10 miler (Best Finishers medal).
favorite. I always leave with their old-school butter cookies that I have to run off by the end of the day.
I ❤ RUNNING: It teaches you a lot about yourself. You have to be disciplined. It makes you hold yourself accountable.
IF YOU WERE STRANDED ON A DESERTED ISLAND, WHAT TWO THINGS WOULD YOU BRING? A picture of my two daughters. It would be a constant reminder of why I would need to get back home. I love those two pretty girls to pieces. Also I’d bring my journal. I love to put my thoughts down. It would be interesting to look back at my experiences on the island at a later date!
IN TRAINING FOR: I’m training for my first trail run — Swamp Stomper. I’ve heard nothing but great things about it. I can’t wait to see what the whole fuss is all about. I’ve never done a trail run before, so I’m stepping out of my comfort zone. BEST EATS: Big Bills BBQ. Ms. Phyliss, who always takes my order, makes me feel at home with her smile. The turkey sandwich is my
CELEBRITY CRUSH: Oh that’s easy. Ms. Blurred Lines herself, Emily Ratajkowski. She’s such a cutie! MOTTO: Dust settles; people shouldn’t!

SECRET OBSESSION: Collecting finisher medals. I have a pretty cool collection thus far, but it’s starting to get out of hand. If you want me to run in your race, just have a finishers medal and I’m there!

RIDING FOR A REASON
Memphian Gears Up for American Diabetes Association’s Tour de Cure By Meghan Beasy. Photo by Chris Hope.
When was the last time you hopped on a bike? For Alan Prouser, 60, it was probably just a few minutes ago. Like many here in Memphis, Prouser has the bicycle-riding bug. He loves it, and chooses to ride three to four times a week, or close to 70 miles. In 2002 Prouser was diagnosed with Type 2 Diabetes. Diabetes kills more Americans every year than breast cancer and AIDS combined. It is a problem with your body that causes blood glucose (sugar) levels to rise higher than normal. Type 2 diabetes causes your body to misuse insulin and is the most common form of diabetes. At first your pancreas makes extra insulin to compensate, but over time it isn’t able to keep up and can’t make enough insulin to keep your blood glucose at normal levels.
HEALTH+FITNESS | November 2014
For Prouser it was discovered not by his usual general physician but by his dentist. After several appointments for ongoing dental issues, he was encouraged to see his doctor and have his A1C tested. After receiving the diagnosis, his first concern was losing a limb.
34
“Both my grandmother and great grandmother were Type-2 diabetics who lost a limb due to diabetic neuropathy,” Prouser
stated. About half of all people with diabetes have some form of nerve damage known as diabetic neuropathy. If untreated, neuropathy can cause severe damage, and even lead to loss of a limb. For years Prouser accepted the diagnosis. He took his medicines, checked his blood sugar, and tried to watch what he was eating, even losing close to 60 pounds. However, in 2012 he stepped onto a scale and did not like the number he was approaching. The weight had crept back on without him noticing. He knew it was time to make a change, and in the spring of 2012 he began to bike again. Prouser’s first event was the 2012 Tour de Cure for the American Diabetes Association. Alan rode in the 35-mile ride but wanted to aim higher. Now, three years later, he has lost over 50 pounds, his energy level has increased, and he was able to discontinue use of many of his oral medicines. His excitement and enthusiasm has spread to his entire family, including his wife Joni, also 60, who regularly walks and participates in local 5K runs. But Prouser’s biggest accomplishment was completing the 62-mile “Metric Century” ride for the Tour de Cure this past May. “As long as I have my feet

and legs, I plan to keep on pedaling so I can be here to enjoy my twin granddaughters and to support the American Diabetes Association,” Prouser said. Prouser is taking on the challenge again this year. “I’m looking forward to leading the Red Riders effort again,” Prouser said. “I am here to say that anyone can take the challenge — you just have to hop on a bike!” Red Riders are people with diabetes who are raising awareness and money for the disease by participating in the Tour de Cure. Red Riders know what it means to have diabetes
and want others to understand that diabetes is a serious disease that can have deadly consequences. “If you are a person living with diabetes, I implore you to ride this year and do everything you can to declare your status, so others on the course and in the wider community have the opportunity to celebrate and be inspired by you,” said Mari Ruddy, founder of the Red Rider program. “I ask you to get on your bike and ride strong and sure. Riding in a Tour de Cure is the affirmation of your courage and perseverance.”
Meghan Beasy is the Memphis Director of the American Diabetes Association. Join the movement to Stop Diabetes. Go to StopDiabetes.com.
TOUR de CURE IS SET TO TAKE PLACE SATURDAY, MAY 30.
It is a fun-filled cycling day with four courses to choose, from familyfriendly/beginner rides to an intense century course for even the most advanced cyclists to enjoy. For more information about diabetes and the Tour de Cure, visit Diabetes.org/tourmemphis.

By Rachelle Dejean. Recipe courtesy of Bodybuilding.com.
It’s time to promote that orange gourd from Halloween-decoration status to pancake-worthy winter squash. INGREDIENTS q 1 /2 cup 100% canned pumpkin q 1 /4 cup of liquid egg whites q 1 /2 scoop of whey protein powder, flavor of your choice q 1 tsp baking powder q 1 /2 tsp pumpkin spice
36
q N atural sweetener like Agave, Stevia or honey (optional)
