The enchanting enclosed canopy forest encompasses the feeling of escaping to another place and time. This forest begins compressed, reveals an alluring threshold, then opens up into a magical forested room where the imagination can run wild. INDUSTRY WITH CONSERVATION GREAT LAKES LANDSCAPE TYPOGRAPHY PROJECT TYPE Studio| Spring 2016 | 11 weeks| Individual Study REVIEWERS Kris Lucius, SmithGroup JJR Chicago | Paula Meijerink, OSU | Sarah Cowles, OSU CRITIC Jason Kentner
Situated in the Great Lakes Region, this studio explores the agency of landscape and how it can be positioned in response to current and anticipated urban conditions. Two of the area’s greatest commodities are its unique natural resources and industry. The survival of the region relies greatly on the preservation of these perceptibly opposing land uses. The speculative landscape typology developed in this
project looks at connecting industry and conservation at multiple scales through the lens of accessibility. In the urban context, both industry and conservation are purposively inaccessible to the community. However new questions can address how industry can maximize conservation, how conservation can be productive for industry and how the community can participate in this alternative industrial park typology.

The ULI Hines Student Competition is an urban design and development challenge for teams of five multidisciplinary graduate students to develop solutions that include drawings, site plans, tables, and market-feasible financial data. For the challenge site, north Chicago, our team developed Hubtown, a connected, mixed-use neighborhood fostering entrepreneurship and growing businesses. Visually we established a hub center containing our prime uses, with spokes of development radiating
outward. Connecting the spokes and activating the rivers edge is an expansive greenway and park. To maintain the aesthetic of the existing manufacturing neighborhood, we made sure that new buildings had an industrial feel with brick construction, large industrial windows, and iconic roof lines. In Hubtown, people venture through social and green spaces and entrepreneurs launch their businesses, all through a lens of economic and environmental sustainability.

INTERLOCKING MOVEMENT Stained wood, acrylic, 3D print Digital Modeling | Rhino
This exploration of space began as an interpretation of a close-up wood grain image. This wood grain became the aerial plan where sections were cut. The thickness, mass, voided space, movement and interlocking layers of this form were investigated, redrawn in Rhino and reconstructed.
GORGE STUDY [previous page] The gorge land form was studied and reinterpreted in layers of handcut card stock highlighting the understanding of how water cuts through layers of stone.

EGG TO BIRDHOUSE Upper right 3D Prints Lower right CNC routed Digital Modeling | Rhino
Two birdhouse designs came from the prompt to create a birdhouse from the origin of a simple egg shape. As part of the design, decisions were made on how to gracefully open the egg without interrupting the flow of the design. The desire to actually use the birdhouse when complete led to the second design that became more practical and carved from cedar for longevity outdoors.

LANDSCAPE INSPIRATION PAINTINGS OF THE AMERICAN LANDSCAPE PROJECT TYPE Oil on Canvas | “Journey Through the Fog” | 2016
Oil on Canvas | “Golden Pathway” | 2011
Prior to discovering the discipline of landscape architecture and the world where one could design and build landscapes, I was admiring and painting the natural landscapes around me. As a painter, scenes within nature and landscapes tell a story and I am the story teller. Those stories come to life through oil paint, brush, canvas and an archive of experiences constantly capturing a moment
in time. The goal is to expose the major players of the story and the mood of the space. Colors and textures are exaggerated to reveal important activators of the space. For me, the artist, it is a recording of a moment. For the viewer it is a chance to escape. My collections have been featured in numerous fine art shows and venues including my own gallery space.
