Since 1911, the Johnson County Public Library has worked toward improving the quality of life for all citizens of Johnson County, Indiana. The Johnson County Public Library is strengthening our community by connecting people, resources and experiences. The library’s new mission provides the direction for our future and communicates our purpose. From book clubs and family fun days, to author visits and storytimes, your library has a full schedule of engaging programs year-round.

The Johnson County Public Library Foundation is thrilled to announce that they have received a grant from Duke Energy to support STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Math) programming at the library! Funds from this grant will be used to purchase stop motion animation and podcasting equipment including a green screen, cameras, iPads, Storycubes, props and a microphone. A podcast is a series of digital audio or video episodes created and posted online for listeners to download and watch or listen. While stop motion animation is a technique for filming objects and making them move on screen. (Think the Lego movies or Tim Burton’s “Nightmare Before Christmas.”) Our STEAM team is planning two hands-on summer camps for kids focusing on teaching kids to use STEAM equipment. Each camp will be a weeklong event at the library and will be free to participants. Our librarians are looking forward to expanding STEAM programming to include more coding and stop animation. Last year, JCPL hosted 4,322 children, teens and adults who participated in our STEAM programs. Three of our robots from our Tinker Tote Dash, Code-a-pillar and Sphero - even made appearances at JCPL’s Johnson County Fair booth! Our goal as a library and as individuals is to encourage others and ourselves to “never stop learning.” I take that challenge to heart and strive to learn to use the resources we offer at our libraries. So, I have been busy learning to play the ukulele with ArtistWorks for Libraries. JCPL now offers 10 ukuleles for checkout. In addition to ukulele lessons, if you have an instrument of your own, ArtistWorks offers free online video lessons from Grammy award-winning pros to help you learn how to play a variety of instruments from guitar to violin, and many more. I’ve not only tried out music lessons; I’ve also spent some time learning German for an upcoming trip. Transparent Language has been a fantastic tool to learn a new language anywhere, online…for FREE! I’m so glad you’ve picked up this issue. It’s packed with helpful information about our resources and upcoming programs this spring. Teens won’t want to miss the opportunity to browse our racks and discover the perfect formalwear for prom at Project Prom (pg. 11). If you’re staying close to home for Spring Break, we have plenty of programs to keep kids and teens busy (pg. 6). And we will kick off our 2018 Authors at JCPL series with two best-selling authors, Lisa Scottoline and Edward Kelsey Moore in April (pgs. 8 & 9). Johnson County Public Library: Where do you get the ideas for your books? Lisa Scottoline: I get my ideas from the strangest things. The truth is any book I write is really from the heart. They are thrillers, but thereâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a huge emotional component. The idea has to come from some place inside me, some place it really connects. I remember I got the idea for â&#x20AC;&#x153;Dirty Blondeâ&#x20AC;? when I was walking in my local mall. I heard someone use the expression â&#x20AC;&#x153;Sheâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a dirty blonde,â&#x20AC;? and I thought â&#x20AC;&#x153;I love that expression!â&#x20AC;? I hadnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t heard it in a while and I wanted to write a book about a dirty blonde. It was a sensational book and I really think the germ of that idea really came from that snippet of overheard words in a mall.

She also writes a weekly column with her daughter Francesca for the Philadelphia Inquirer titled â&#x20AC;&#x153;Chick Witâ&#x20AC;? which is a witty and fun take on life from a womanâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s perspective. Lisa has served as President of Mystery Writers of America and has taught a course she developed, â&#x20AC;&#x153;Justice and Fictionâ&#x20AC;? at The University of Pennsylvania Law School, her alma mater. She lives in the Philadelphia area with an array of disobedient pets, and she wouldnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t have it any other way.

JCPL: Is it true that you wrote a book based on a guy you saw in a magazine? LS: I was looking in a magazine, because I read all the time, and thereâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a drop-dead gorgeous male model. (I admit a little eye candy does interest me.) And Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m looking at this guy and he was so interesting looking. And I know it sounds creepy, but I thought I want to write a book where he is the love interest. Because, believe me, he would be a love interest. And he is actually exactly the love interest in â&#x20AC;&#x153;Daddyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Girl.â&#x20AC;? I actually wrote a book partly about him and the attractive way he looked and the way he was unconventionally handsome and kind of furry and beary! I thought what kind of woman would be attracted to him and what sort of situation would she be in. All the ideas for my books come from something like that in my life. JCPL: Weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve heard you do a ton of research for your books. What have you done to make sure your novels are as correct and as realistic as possible? LS: Second hand experiences just arenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t good enough. I want to see, feel, hear and experience the same things the characters will. That has lead me to taking boxing lessons, visiting a convent, driving up the front steps of the Art Museum in Philadelphia (the famous Rocky stairs) just to make sure it can be done, standing on the roof of my car in a parking garage to figure out a real-life escape route for a character, visiting a junkyard and participating in a weekly poker game. But my favorite research, by far, would have to be the shoe shopping expeditions for â&#x20AC;&#x153;Courting Trouble.â&#x20AC;? filled with talented storytellers. Writing novels has always felt like the inevitable result of the various parts of my nature coming together. JCPL: Have you always been a writer or did you discover an interest for it later in life? EKM: I have written stories and essays since I was a child. What changed in later life was that I was able to finish the projects that I began. I have hundreds of unfinished stories and essays written over the course of almost three decades. It was only with maturity and the patience that came with it that I could get myself to sit down and complete the things I started. JCPL: How did you get started writing? EKM: Most of my early writing consisted of short stories that I wrote for literary contests. I won the first one I entered, Chicago Public Radioâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s â&#x20AC;&#x153;Stories on Stageâ&#x20AC;? Short Story Contest, and never won another after that. However, my first published story, the winning entry to that contest, received a lot of positive attention and I got a lot of encouragement to write more. Eventually, several of my short stories and some essays were published in different magazines. That really started the ball rolling for me and gave me the confidence needed to write longer works. JCPL: How do you balance being a full-time musician and writing? Do you take a break from music to write? EKM: After several years of working as both a musician and a writer, I have finally come to accept the fact that there is, and never will be, any balance. I am sometimes forced to take a break from playing the cello to travel or to finish a project. At other times, I have to stop writing in order to practice and play a concert. Music is wonderful and so is literature, but careers in the arts are never easy or convenient. When things get hectic, I try to remember how very lucky I am to have two jobs that I love.

Johnson County Public Library: Where did you first get the idea to write a book? Edward Kelsey Moore: I have loved reading and been fascinated by words since I was very young. Also, I come from a family that is

JCPL: How do you feel about libraries? Do you spend a lot time at libraries? EKM: I love libraries. Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve often said that I wouldnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t be a reader, much less a writer, if it werenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t for libraries. The first clear memory of my entire life is the day my mother took me to get my first library card at the Central Library in Indianapolis. To this day, I am probably more comfortable in a library than any other place. Even though I have a nice office at my home, I do most of my writing in my neighborhood library. Meet Kelly Staten and Learn About Project Prom plenty of time before prom while avoiding spring break. It also takes quite a bit of communication with the sponsors and partners to finalize their involvement and then once the day arrives, it takes hours to set up! Thankfully, we have a great team of volunteers from Zeta Tau Alpha and JCPL that help make that process go much faster. JCPL: What kind of experience do you hope the teens will have at the library? KS: Shopping for a prom dress can be kind of intimidating, especially if you’re on a limited budget. Boutique dresses can cost anywhere from $300 - $1,000! My hope is that teens will find the perfect dress or tux here, be able to attend prom and make memories (that include the library) on their special night.

Kelly Staten is a teen and adult services librarian at our Franklin branch. In addition to what you would imagine are a librarian’s duties - helping patrons find books and resources and offering reading suggestions - Kelly spends a good portion of her time creating and planning programs for teens and adults at the library. One of her programs has really grown over the past several years and has taken on a life of its own, including media coverage and community partnerships! Read our interview with Kelly and learn how a few formals hanging in her own closet has become JCPL’s Project Prom. Johnson County Public Library: What is Project Prom? Kelly Staten: Project Prom is a program for teens who are in need of formal wear to wear to prom. JCPL collects gently used formal wear, shoes and accessories then teens can come look through our selection on the designated program dates. We’ve recently expanded to hosting small pop up shops for homecoming and winter formal as well! JCPL: Where did you get the idea for Project Prom? KS: Five years ago, I started a teen program we called Prom Dress Swap. Like most women in their mid to late twenties, I’d amassed a number of formal dresses from weddings and high school banquets that I never wore anymore. They were in great condition but just hanging in the closet taking up space when I thought “why not create a program out of this at the library?” and Project Prom was born. JCPL: Could you share about some of the behind the scenes? What kind of details do you have to plan each year for a successful program? KS: There is a lot of planning that goes into making the program a success. We start thinking about the next year about five to six months before the program actually takes place. Our committee sets the dates and schedules the program with

JCPL: How do you interact with teens as they shop? KS: Last year we had the Franklin College Zeta Tau Alpha chapter helping teens shop for dresses and when they would come out to show their parents and friends, the women in the sorority would cheer and clap for them. It’s a really positive atmosphere that makes the teens feel confident in the dresses they try on. JCPL: How does it feel to help teens find that perfect dress or suit? KS: It’s always really exciting when a teen finds a dress or suit for prom. I’m happy that the library can make that happen for them. I always encourage them to share pictures with us from prom so we can see how they look on prom night! JCPL: What’s your favorite part of the program? KS: Since 2013, we’ve had over 800 people attend our Project Prom programs. Last year alone, almost 200 teens found formal wear for prom! JCPL: Project Prom continues to grow each year. How has the program developed in the past few years? KS: We now have a dedicated committee that meets year-round to plan the program. New community partnerships continue to come on board and we’re excited to offer alterations and some fun giveaways for the teens in 2018. glasses for color blindness

Johnson County Public Library recognizes the hard work our dedicated staff does at each of our locations. We’d like to take a moment to congratulate staff member, Elyssa Everling, for her award-winning poster presentation during the Indiana Library Federation Conference. Elyssa is a librarian and Accessibility Specialist for JCPL and last year she received a mini-grant to purchase Enchroma Glasses for patrons to borrow. We asked Elyssa a few questions about her projects.

Johnson County Public Library: What are Enchroma glasses? Elyssa Everling: The Enchroma glasses are specialty eyewear that help alleviate the effects of red-green colorblindness. JCPL: How did you get the idea? EE: I am always looking for new ideas and resources to offer our patrons. The glasses are not guaranteed to work for everyone and are expensive. By providing the glasses, JCPL is giving patrons an opportunity to try the glasses before, potentially, purchasing a pair themselves. JCPL: The Enchroma glasses have been so successful, what’s the next challenge you’d like to address for patrons at the library? EE: I’d like to look into getting an accessible workstation set up. But, nothing is set in stone and I would be open to hearing ideas and needs. JCPL: Could you tell us about being the Accessibility Specialist for the system? What does that mean? What changes have been made at the branches? EE: Being the Accessibility Specialist means that I stay up on the current trends in accessibility in the library. Kit Logan, Facilities Manager, and I did a survey in August 2016 of all the branches. Some of the changes that were implemented were the addition of accessibility parking spots and proper signage.

AUTHORS AT JCPL: EDWARD KELSEY MOORE

Edward Kelsey Moore lives and writes in Chicago, where he also enjoys a career as a professional cellist. His debut novel, “The Supremes at Earl’s All-You-Can Eat,” was an international hit and a New York Times best-seller. A new novel, “The Supremes Sing the Happy Heartache Blues,” was published in the summer of 2017. This program is supported by a Novel Conversations grant from Indiana Humanities and kicks off the 2018 Authors at JCPL series.
