In our last Library Guide we shared a little about the 15 projects that were awarded library mini-grants. We thought you might be interested in an update.

Board Games Our branches have some great selections like Ticket to Ride, Settlers of Catan, Animal Upon Animal and Pandemic. In fact, our patrons have enjoyed our games at home over 300 times since we started offering them in May. My First Library Card - Coming Soon!

We believe that getting your first library card should be an exciting experience!

When your child (birth-5th grade) signs up for their first library card, he/she will also get a JCPL drawstring bag and lanyard for this special library card designed just for the kids.

1,000 Books Before Kindergarten In August, we kicked off our 1,000 Books Before Kindergarten program with a visit from author Salina Yoon. This program encourages families and caregivers to read at least 1,000 books to their infant, toddler or preschooler before entering kindergarten. We have nearly 450 kids registered. We even have some close to reaching the 1,000 book goal!

Friends of the Library advocate for and support library services and resources while sharing their love of books with the community. They are committed to raising the standard of excellence of our library, while fostering a positive relationship between the Library and the Johnson County communities.

Through book sales and fundraisers, they are able to fund programs and sponsor activities that are not part of the regular library budget, which bring together people who value libraries and literacy.

Now that the holidays are here, it seems like a natural time to pause to reflect on the year so far and to tell you a bit about what is coming in the months ahead.

The Johnson County Public Library has focused on our mission – strengthening our community by connecting people, resources and experiences. We see our county as a community of empowered learners, enthusiastic readers and engaged learners. We strive to be the place those connections happen.

This summer, we built and celebrated the opening of two new StoryWalks – one at our Trafalgar Branch and one at Country Gate Park in New Whiteland.

We hope your family will visit all four of our StoryWalks when sunny days present the opportunity to get outside with the family this winter.

But it’s not just about what JCPL creates for the community, it’s about being a part of the community. I hope you were able to support local businesses and take advantage of the Play Your Card Right discounts during the month of September. We appreciate everyone who participated in this year’s Library Card Sign-up Month promotion. We look forward to doing it again next year!

And we look ahead to the coming months (past the fun of baby reindeer visits and special crafts and storytimes in December) to ways we can help you enjoy some time inside.

What is a Library?

A library is a place to connect people, resources and experiences. It’s a place where ALL people are welcome. It’s a place to learn through reading, discovering and creating. A library is a community of empowered learners, enthusiastic readers and engaged citizens.

And we’re really looking forward to our February At Home in Johnson County event – Our Heritage Revealed: Every Family Has A Story (page 9).

JCPL staff and researchers from the Central Indiana DNA Interest Group will utilize traditional and state-of-the-art genealogy resources, including DNA testing, to uncover the family stories of two Johnson County celebrities and reveal the varied backgrounds of our community.

If the wintertime blues get you down, JCPL has plenty of programs, activities and resources to brighten your day!

The JCPL card is free to residents of the library district and is valid at all JCPL locations.

Indiana residents with patron accounts in good standing at any library participating in the statewide reciprocal borrowing program may apply to receive reciprocal borrowing privileges at Johnson County Public Library. Reciprocal borrowers may place holds and check out any on-shelf item. Digital content, such as e-books, are not available to reciprocal borrowers.

The Community Rooms at all JCPL Branches are available for use by not-for-profit groups and business owners, as well as for special events. Non-commercial use of the room is at no charge. Business use and private social events have a nominal charge. The Study Rooms at the Trafalgar and White River branches are also open for not-for-profit and business use.

Franklin Branch Carretha Hale and the Indiana African American Genealogy Society will present the true story of the Hale family and their enslavement with the Creek Native Americans. Because of her findings, Hale was inspired to write a book on her family discoveries in 2015, “From Slavery to Statehood: A Family History in the Creek Nation.”

The group will also answer genealogy questions at the end. Please register.

“The Hate U Give”

by Angie Thomas: We’ll be reading this We Need Diverse Books award winner about a sixteen-year-old girl balancing her poor neighborhood and the fancy suburban prep school she attends. That uneasy balance is shattered when Starr witnesses the fatal shooting of her unarmed childhood best friend Khalil at the hands of a police officer.

Meet Pam Caito and Explore Johnson County’s Past JCPL: What are some interesting things you’ve learned about Johnson County?

Pam: I love reading about what the county must have looked like before it was developed. My imagination really gets going thinking about how the vegetation was left to grow for centuries untouched and how that must have looked to the early settlers.

It is hard to imagine that only five farms were located between the northern tip of White River Township and Indianapolis during the 1840s. Also, I am always amazed at how the settlers immediately set about creating a structure of laws and schools.

Pam Caito is the assistant in the Historical Room at the Franklin Branch and in the Marketing and Communications Department at our Library Services Center. She loves helping patrons find information about their family history or their homes.

Pam leads the monthly Your House History Conversation Group where they exchange stories and resources for researching the history of their home. Read our interview with Pam and learn a little bit about the Historical Room.

Johnson County Public Library: What kinds of resources can patrons find in the Historical Room?

Pam Caito: Libraries are great for free resources. For the casual genealogist or someone who is looking up ancestors as a hobby, ancestry.com is a fantastic resource. But most of us tend to do a lot of research for a time, and then we get pulled away by life’s happenings. Why pay a monthly fee for something you may not be able to use for a few months? The library offers a version of ancestry.com for free so our patrons can come in and do that research without the cost of a subscription. Another great way to do some casual or even in-depth research is with newspaper archives. The library has recently obtained a subscription to Indianapolis Star archives back to 1859. The beauty of this arrangement for patrons who live in Johnson County is that the Star looked for news outside of Marion County and reported on it in its paper. We also have the Franklin newspapers back to 1912 digitized, as well as some 1845 newspapers on microfilm. All these resources make even casual research easy and enjoyable.

JCPL: What is the most common question patrons ask you?

Pam: I often get asked, “Can you look up: birth certificate, death certificate and marriage certificate?” I recently looked up a marriage certificate in Johnson County for a marriage in 1835.

The family’s descendents from this union went on to be owners of many businesses here in Franklin. It was an interesting legacy to piece together.

JCPL: Where do you get your inspiration for your posts on JCPL’s Now You Know blog?

Pam: I have always loved history, especially the stories. I was first struck by how fun it was to read the firsthand accounts of the day to day life of the Johnson County residents. Some of it would take me by surprise and debunked long held perceptions of pioneers.

The Now You Know blog lets me bring to life everyday dramas of the past and hopefully my readers will laugh, cry and feel proud of their home here in Johnson County.

JCPL: What is the Your House Histories Conversation Group and how did you come up with the idea?

Pam: Along with death, birth and marriage certificates, I was seeing a number of local residents come in looking for the history of their houses. The history of a house is linked to the community.

I felt these homeowners really needed to meet and share stories because it seemed everyone had a piece of the puzzle that could help a neighbor’s search for their house history.

JCPL: What is your favorite part of working in the Historical Room?

Pam: It has to be the history and the wonderful access to resources. I get just as interested piecing together a family history or a house history for a patron as I do for my own family history.

I love hearing the patron’s family stories. I “get it” and why it is important to them. I try to provide a good service, because I know it matters to the patron to know that parts of their family are not lost, they just needed to know how to find them.

JCPL: How can people find out more information about the Historical Room.

Pam: The best way to find more information is to check out our website, pageafterpage.org/genealogy-historical-room. I also encourage you to come in and talk to me. I am scheduled in the Historical Room Mondays and Tuesdays to help patrons use our resources. I will look up information for you, but I would love to assist you in getting started on your own journey to the past.
