President’s Message In June 2015, I reach a milestone in my life. About two months ago, the government sent me a red, white, and blue identification card showing my Medicare eligibility. It seems that when I was younger, the year of retirement eligibility was so very far away. As you grow older, time passes so rapidly. Please keep in mind, as I do, that you are never too old to learn. Our libraries are a wonderful source to visit to expand your mind and increase your knowledge. Come in and use the computers, visit the historical room, attend programs, make a date to chat with one of the librarians, and my all- time favorite - check out books from the authors you admire. You can even be a volunteer and share your knowledge! Summer Learning begins June 1 with a superhero theme and runs through July 18. The Summer Learning Program is not just for kids - it’s for all ages! So think about this question…Who's your superhero? No cape is necessary! Best regards, Jane Bingham, Friends President P.S. Author Spotlight…Maurice Sendak MAURICE SENDAK
June 10, 1928 - May 8, 2012 Born in Brooklyn, NY, Sendak was the youngest of three children. His Jewish family immigrated to the U.S. from Poland before WWI. He grew up listening to his father’s imaginative tales where he gained a lifelong appreciation for books. As a child, he developed health problems and was confined to a bed. He decided to become an illustrator after watching Walt Disney’s film Fantasia at the age of 12. In high school, he illustrated comic books for All-American Comics and was a window dresser for F.A.O. Schwartz. In 1951, Sendak illustrated his first children’s book, The Wonderful Farm by Marcel Aymé.
In his works such as Where the Wild Things Are and Outside, Over There, he showed that childhood was not completely carefree, that even children could have legitimate troubles in their lives. They were imaginative and whimsical stories, but also gave children a certain dignity that they did not have before. His works were often written with dark emotions yet one of the reoccurring themes in his books is that parents still love their children even if the children misbehave sometimes. During his career, Sendak illustrated nearly a hundred picture books.

Getting to Know…Betsy Schmidt Where did you grow up? Morgantown, Indiana. How long have you lived in Johnson County? All of my life. How long have you been a Friends member? 25 years. What is your favorite part of the library? Research and business resources - so helpful in my work for Franklin College. What do you like to read? Books focused on business management and leadership as well as inspiration, faith, and self-awareness. What kinds of music do you listen to? All kinds! Classical, country, easy listening are my favorites. If you could witness any event - past, present, or future - what would it be? Without a doubt any story told in the Bible…particularly the birth of Jesus in the manger. When you have 30 minutes of free time, how do you pass the time? Walking! I try to log 15 to 20 miles a week. I love our local outdoor trail system! If you won the lottery, what is the first thing you would do? Recover from shock, then celebrate! And then I would arrange to work part time rather than full time and then set up funds to support my favorite charities. What chore do you absolutely hate doing? I’m not a big fan of bathroom cleaning. If you could be an fictional character, who would you be? A fairy godmother. She always helps those with kind, giving hearts connect with their dreams.
