FRIENDS make all the difference!

Hello Friends‌ My name is Macie L. Martin. I was born in Chicago to Dorothy and George Klutts. At the age of nine, we moved to Griffith, Indiana. My sister and I were privileged to have many aunts, uncles and cousins and we learned early on that differences are fun and exciting. Following graduation from Calumet High School I began my journey to Indiana State University where I earned a BS in Education in 1962. Dick Martin and I met at ISU and were married in 1966. I taught third grade for three years while Dick was in seminary. We then began some of our roaming with his positions in Iowa, Minnesota, Michigan and Arcade, NY. In 1979, while in Arcade, I started in the first of three libraries where I have worked with people who love libraries. In 1982, Dick and I became parents to a terrific son, Michael.

If you are not a Friends member, why not "FRIEND" the FRIENDS OF THE JOHNSON COUNTY PUBLIC LIBRARY? Go to this link: pageafterpage.org/friends-of-the-library/ You can also "Friend" JCPL on Facebook by searching for "Johnson County Public Library (Indiana)" or click the Facebook logo on the Library's page. You can join the Friends for a very small amount. You can also support the Friends in their goals of providing resources to the library, especially with programs like the Summer Learning Program by coming to the library book sales.

In 1985, I began my next library position at the Reinstein library branch of Buffalo-Erie County system. In 1996, we moved to Franklin, IN and I was happy to begin working for the Franklin Branch of the Johnson County Public Library. After 13 years in the position of Circulation Manager, I retired in 2009. Since that time, my husband and I have had the opportunity to travel to Ireland, Spain, Honduras, Belize, and Mexico. We have become grandparents to Mike and Jenn's two charming little boys, Alec and James. Caring for them frequently has been a joy and privilege. Retirement also has allowed me to serve in my community – through my church, the Franklin Lions Club, the Interchurch Food Pantry and the Friends of Johnson County Public Library. Macie currently serves on the Friends Board of Directors.

Reading With Our Friends Book Review by Merilee Allen When someone asks me what I like to read, I often reply that it depends on the season. I enjoy reading a variety of genres and have found that pairing Mother Nature’s moods with a complimentary book yields a most rewarding experience. The stormy, windy nights of autumn pair perfectly with chilling tales of the supernatural and murder mysteries. The advent of the Christmas season finds me curled up with heartwarming, sentimental novels that promote peace on earth and good will toward men. In the dead of winter, I often turn to nonfiction - biographies, history, and theology. Now that winter has finally relaxed its tenacious grip and spring is in the air, I am ready to read about rebirth and renewal, awakenings, gardens and nature. Garden Spells by Sarah Addison Allen fits the bill perfectly. Set in the fictional town of Bascom, North Carolina, Garden Spells (2007) is the story of two sisters searching for a way to understand and embrace their past, their community, and each other. Claire Waverly is the older sister who runs a successful catering business and maintains the family homestead. She leads a quiet, solitary life and spends most of her time tending the same unique garden as her ancestors - a garden containing mystical plants and dominated by a cantankerous and opinionated apple tree. Claire’s orderly life is turned upside down by the return of her rebellious, young sister Sydney, a woman fleeing an abusive relationship with a child in tow. Together the sisters seek to heal the wounds of the past and rebuild their relationship while living and working together. In the end, both sisters gain insight into their common legacy and discover the importance of family and belonging. I suppose many readers would consider Garden Spells “chick lit” or a simple “beach read.” Perhaps to some extent it is, but it is also a novel that is not easily forgotten as Allen’s writing is atmospheric, spellbinding

and transporting. She envelops the reader in a world of magic and enchantment, a world where garden plants influence behavior and a tree expresses itself by throwing apples. It is a place you don’t want to readily leave. Sarah Addison Allen is the author of several other novels, including the recently published First Frost (2015), the long awaited sequel to Garden Spells. Guide to Edible Flowers From Garden Spells Angelica - Will shape its meaning to your need, but it is particularly good for calming hyper children at your table. Anise Hyssop - Eases frustration and confusion. Bachelor’s Button - Aids in finding things that were previously hidden. A clarifying flower. Chicory - Conceals bitterness. Gives the eater a sense that all is well. A cloaking flower. Chive Blossom - Ensures you will win an argument. Conveniently, also an antidote for hurt feelings. Honeysuckle - For seeing in the dark, but only if you use honeysuckle from a brush of vines at least two feet thick. A clarifying flower. Lavender - Raises spirits. Prevents bad decisions resulting from fatigue or depression. Lilac - When a certain amount of humility is in order. Gives confidence that humbling yourself to another will not be used against you. Marigold - Causes affection, but sometimes accompanied by jealousy. Pansy - Encourages the eater to give compliments and surprise gifts. Peppermint - A clever method of concealment. When used with other edible flowers, it confuses the eater, thus concealing the true nature of what you are doing. A cloaking flower.
