Libraries Transform Since 1911, Johnson County Public Library has worked toward improving the quality of life for all citizens of Johnson County, Indiana.

For more than one hundred years JCPL has provided you with courteous, knowledgeable and efficient service, and access to a broad diversity of information through resources and programs. Today we offer four branches, a Library Services Center and a virtual branch.

Nearly 1 million items are checked out every year at Johnson County Public Library. Every day our staff handles thousands of items.

Checking out large numbers of items can be time-consuming and items can accidentally get misplaced or overlooked.

You may have heard the sounds of beeping throughout the stacks at the branches. Our staff has been working on a new RFID (Radio Frequency Identification) system. This new system has lots of benefits including quicker checkouts, more efficient handling of materials, better security and improved inventory functions.

Additional checkout stations have been added at the branches to help patrons check out quicker. These stations will be equipped with software to allow for credit card payments.

RFID allows for better security of library materials. CDs and DVDs will no longer be stored in bulky security cases, allowing for an easier checkout. This also frees up space on our shelves for more items and a broader range of material.

Better security means that we can better maintain the library collection, a valuable community resource. Our staff will be able to inventory the collection and find misplaced items quicker.

RFID does not replace our amazing staff members but it will free up time for more personalized interaction with our patrons. Look for smiling faces whenever you enter the library to help you get the most out of your library visit.

Or look for us in the community at the many fairs, festivals and outreach events. We want to bring the library to you, and we’re always listening for new ideas to make that happen.

From book clubs and family fun days, to canning classes and storytime, your library has a full schedule of engaging programs year-round.

Now part of the Johnson County Public Library Foundation

Friends of the Library advocate for and support library services and resources while sharing their love of books with the community. They are committed to raising the standard of excellence of our library, while fostering a positive relationship between the Library and the Johnson County communities.

Through book sales and fundraisers, they are able to fund programs and sponsor activities that are not part of the regular library budget, which bring together people who value libraries and literacy.

Meeting Spaces The Community Rooms at all JCPL Branches are available for use by not-for-profit groups and business owners, as well as for special events. Non-commercial use of the room is at no charge. Business use and private social events have a nominal charge. The Study Rooms at the Trafalgar and White River branches are also open for not-for-profit and business use.

Adult Learning Center (ALC) The Adult Learning Center (ALC) of the Johnson County Public Library provides small group or individualized one-on-one tutoring in Adult Basic Education and English as a second language. StoryWalks in Johnson County As the snow starts to melt and the weather starts to warm up it’s time to head outside! Spend a day with your family visiting the different StoryWalks and parks in Johnson County.

As you conclude your day at the Trafalgar Branch, stop inside to walk around, check out a few books to take home and see what programs are happening that afternoon.

We suggest starting your day at the north end of the county and working your way south. Visit Independence Park, stroll along the trail to read the story and then enjoy the fun playground area or play basketball.

Be on the lookout for a new book at each StoryWalk every two months. Visit pageafterpage.org/storywalk for StoryWalk updates and details about upcoming programs.

As you continue to journey south, stop by the Franklin Urban Forest to stroll along the trail there and learn about the different trees.

The Independence Park StoryWalk is sponsored by the Greenwood/White River Rotary Club with partners Johnson County Public Library and the Johnson County Parks and Recreation.

When you visit each of the StoryWalks be sure to check out the bottom of each page for a fun activity to enjoy with your family. These activities incorporate the five early literacy practices: Talking, Singing, Reading, Writing and Playing.

Once you’ve visited the Urban Forest then drive on down to our Trafalgar Branch to experience all the beauty that the Prairie Trail has to offer. Walk a lap around the paved path while enjoying the StoryWalk*. On your second lap, learn about the plants and wildlife that surround the prairie. Two full laps around the prairie make a mile.

Independence Park is located at 2100 S. Morgantown Road in Greenwood near Center Grove High School.

Join a

BOOK CLUB Gather around with good friends and chat about the books you’re reading!

Every JCPL Branch offers book clubs and discussions each month. We invite you to join the conversation. Books are available for checkout before each month’s discussion.

Music fans will want to go to Clark Pleasant Branch to check out “Rockin’ Reads,” a monthly discussion that focuses on a biography of a popular musician.

If you’d rather read great classic and contemporary novels, try the “Page Turners Book Discussion” at the Franklin Branch. This long-running group meets the third Monday evening of each month. New to the Franklin lineup is a quarterly Military Book Discussion. Get in on the ground floor at this group’s first meeting on April 22. Teens can enjoy a slice of pizza while discussing popular young adult fiction every month at “Pizza & Pages.”

Our Trafalgar Branch offers a unique discussion every month called “Novels & Nosh.” This themed discussion invites members to share their favorite reads, old or new, while enjoying delicious refreshments. The White River Branch offers book lovers two different opportunities to get together. Our daytime group meets the last Wednesday afternoon of every month, while the Monday night group meets every third Monday. Each group discusses different titles, so come to both if you can’t get enough good book talk!

A couple of JCPL book clubs meet outside the library. Every month we present “Stout Stories” at a local brewery for our 21 and over readers. We’re also delighted to host two “Novel and Movie Discussions” at the Historic Artcraft Theatre this April.

Authors at JCPL

A nationally renowned poet who makes his home right

here in Indiana, Adrian Matejka was the natural choice to kick off our brand new program series, “Authors at JCPL.” His collection “The Big Smoke” was a finalist for the National Book Award and the Pulitzer Prize, and his new collection, “Maps to the Stars,” is directly influenced by his childhood in Indianapolis.

We asked Adrian a few questions ahead of his April 29 visit to the Franklin Branch. For the entire interview, visit pageafterpage.org/authors Johnson County Public Library: You’ve lived in a variety of places, including Germany, California and Indiana. How does where you live affect what you write? And what does Indiana mean to your writing?

Adrian Matejka: For a long time, I didn’t think that any of the towns or cities I lived in mattered to my writing. I thought that poems were “POEMS” and should be bigger than place or time somehow. My poems often tell stories, though, and one of the most of the important things in a story is setting.

This became especially clear when I moved back to Indiana after being gone for 22 years. I was immediately inspired (which is a nice way of saying “creatively forced”) to write about Indianapolis.

Suddenly, all of these Indy landmarks became part of my poems, either as setting or as a signpost. Some of the things in the poems (like the mighty Lincoln Middle School) are

gone now. But many other things I remember from the late 1980s—the Pyramids, the Speedway, Bertha Ross Park—are all still around. I didn’t realize how important those landmarks were to my perspectives until I came home. Where I live doesn’t necessarily influence the writing directly, but it is so important to the poems in one way or another.

JCPL: If you weren’t a poet and a teacher, what would you do for a living?

AM: I worked in bookstores in college and after, so I imagine I would have tried to continue in that business. In fact, I worked at Amazon.com way back 1996 when it was a very small company and only sold books. The only reason I left Seattle was so I could focus on my graduate studies and try to figure out how to write better poetry.

JCPL: What is your favorite book and why?

AM: That’s the hardest question of them all! In general, I spend time with writers and try to read all of their work, rather than single volumes. So James Baldwin, Gwendolyn Brooks, Raymond Chandler, Robert Hayden and Carl Sagan are all writers whose work I enjoy across the board and return to often. If I had to pick a favorite book today, it would probably be Yusef Komunyakaa’s “Neon Vernacular.” It’s a great sampling of his earlier work and includes some of my favorite poems like “Slam, Dunk, & Hook” and “You and I Are Disappearing.”

Poet Nancy Pulley of Brick Street Poetry

His new book, “Maps to the Stars,” draws from his childhood in Indianapolis in the 1980s. This program is supported by a Novel Conversations grant from Indiana Humanities.
