LIBRARIES TRANSFORM A Library isn’t just a building with books and other resources. The Library is the hub of the community, offering meaningful programs and services. That’s why the Johnson County Public Library offers a program each spring that helps teens find free dresses for their prom, homecoming and other special occasions.

Girls attend Project Prom for a variety of reasons. Some are environmentally conscious and like the idea of re-using dresses instead of buying new. Others are budget-minded, not wanting to burden parents with an expensive prom experience. And some choose to pay it forward after prom and donate or even return their Project Prom dresses so another girl can wear it to her prom!

One such budget-minded teen is 2018 Johnson County Fair Queen Hartlee Chadwell. When Hartlee was in search of the perfect dress for the Fair pageant, she discovered JCPL’s Project Prom on Facebook. While scrolling through the many dress showcased on the page, she came across a green dress and fell immediately in love with it. Then she realized the picture had been posted about a year ago. Even though the chance of getting that dress was slim, she decided to stop by and browse the racks.

She visited Project Prom on the first day at our Franklin Branch last year. “As soon as I walked in, low and behold, hanging high on the wall, was that green dress!” Hartlee tried about a dozen other dresses, but in the end the green dress was the one she selected.

Hartlee is proud that her dress is from the library. “Project Prom is a valuable library program because it gives young women in the community a way to find a formal dress, shoes and even jewelry, without having to spend an arm and a leg on prom,” she shared.

Part of the Johnson County Public Library Foundation

Philanthropy has provided programming and collection support for the Johnson County Public Library through generous donations from library patrons and residents of Johnson County since the public library was formed.

The Friends of the Library and the Johnson County Public Library Foundation work together as a nonprofit organization to raise funds to support programs that encourage lifelong learning through the JCPL. In 2017, 53% of funding of all programs and events were supported by the Friends and JCPL Foundation.

The Friends of JCPL raise funds through their quarterly book sales. The Friends also stock the many Little Free Libraries that are associated with JCPL StoryWalks throughout the county. The JCPL Foundation seeks donations from corporations, the local business community and other foundations and receives funding from individual donations, planned gifts and legacy bequests. Your donations or book sale purchases will support literacy initiatives like:

FROM THE DIRECTOR, LISA LINTNER

Though the weather outside has been frightful at times, I hope you have found our programs delightful this winter. We really packed the calendar with exciting programming over the holidays starting with a fascinating genealogy event back in November, featuring Cherie Lowe and Retired Major General R. Martin Umbarger. You packed the house at all four of our branches (as well as our Library Service Center) to pet the baby reindeer and other animals from the North Pole. Santa and Mrs. Claus greeted dozens of children as they visited for storytimes and crafts. And we hosted our first JCPL Teen Art Contest - be sure to visit their artwork on display at our branches through April 30.

During the past year, we’ve been at work preparing for the future and how to meet the needs of our growing county over the next five years and beyond. We have completed and submitted our strategic plan that will carry JCPL through 2023. In this plan, we outline our goals to expand and diversify our collections and to elevate our facilities, technology, resources and services to 21st century excellence. Our vision is to continue to build and support a community of empowered learners, enthusiastic readers and engaged citizens. We hope you share in our excitement to turn the page and start the next chapter of service.

As we continue to Explore Winter at JCPL, we’re also celebrating Black History Month throughout February. When you flip through the pages, you’ll see programs with a Black History Month theme - look for the diamond symbol throughout the guide.

What is a Library?

A library is a place to connect people, resources and experiences. It’s a place where ALL people are welcome. It’s a place to learn through reading, discovering and creating. A library is a community of empowered learners, enthusiastic readers and engaged citizens.

Romance is in the air as the Historic Artcraft Theatre in Franklin transforms into the Heartcraft for the month of February as we host our first Authors at JCPL event of 2019 – a romance authors panel which includes best-selling authors Julia Quinn, Cathy Maxwell, Marie Tremayne and Vivienne Lorret. And then in March, our next Authors at JCPL guest, Greg Iles will be joining us. Be sure to read our interview with him on page 9.

I’m so glad you’ve picked up our Spring Library Guide. We really do design all of our programming and select all of our resources (page 10) with YOU in mind.

Meet Karen Emery, Adult Materials Selector JCPL: How do you decide what books, CDs, DVDs, etc. to purchase for the library?

KE: A lot of the selection process is based on previous purchases because things have to prove their worth. Our libraries have limited space, so everything has to justify its space.

We do our best to make sure that we choose items that are timely and will be of interest to our patrons so they will be checked out regularly.

JCPL: Do you have any go-to resources when you’re selecting books?

KE: Yes, we have a couple of different professional journals that we go to for suggestions. I read four or five library and industry journals. I’m on the library marketing lists at the major publishers to receive newsletters and announcements. I also browse sources like Entertainment Weekly to see what people are talking about, what’s creating buzz.

Libraries constantly update and add to the collection of books, movies and music we provide for our communities.

We play the role of bookstore, music store and old-school video store, without any rental fees! And, of course, someone has to be in charge of choosing what we put on our shelves.

At Johnson County Public Library that someone is Karen Emery, our Adult Materials Selector. Karen is responsible for selecting all of the books, audiobooks, movies and music available in our adult department. We thought it would be fun to give you a behind the scenes look at how the library selects the materials you check out every day.

Johnson County Public Library: How long have you been working at JCPL? Karen Emery: I’ve been with JCPL for 25 years. I spent six years in Adult Services at the Franklin Branch, 10 years as the Audiovisual Manager and about nine years now in Collection Services.

JCPL: What does the Adult Materials Selector do?

KE: I choose all of our nonfiction, fiction, large type, audiobooks, DVDs, CDs and e-books for adults. Basically, I come in and I spend money. I get paid to shop! It really is kind of like Christmas everyday. On a typical day, I check my email to catch up on any purchase requests or things that came in overnight from our staff. Then, I go through several industry and publisher’s newsletters to see who’s been on the talk shows and who is out on book tours. Each week is a little different with different kinds of orders arriving throughout the month. I order adult nonfiction the second week and adult fiction the third week, with audiovisual orders sprinkled between the two. If I’m working on selecting audiovisual materials, I work within the database to order new titles.

JCPL: How many items do we have?

KE: Right now we have 280,111 print items, 9,023 e-books, 31,678 DVDs, 23,812 physical audiobooks and 7,025 e-audiobooks. That total does not include Hoopla, our digital books, movies and more e-resources, which adds another several hundred thousand items.

JCPL: How many items circulate throughout the year?

KE: Last year our circulation number was just over a million items - 1,048,422.

JCPL: How many items do you buy each year?

KE: Just counting the purchase of materials for the Adult Department, not including purchases for our Children’s and Young Adult Departments, we ordered more than 15,000 items in 2017.

JCPL: How does selecting items work with JCPL’s budget?

KE: Our budget is determined by tax dollars from our county library district. Our library board approves how money is allocated to cover purchases from our operating expenditures.

We are fortunate to have a well-managed budget. That budget is used to not only order new titles, but also replacement titles for items that have a lot of wear and tear, like children’s books or DVDs. We also have budgets and guidelines for purchasing non-traditional items like Launchpads and board games.

AMERICAN POLAR BEARS – DOUGH BOYS IN RUSSIA

Experience history from the contents of a trunk! Historical Interpreter William Hendricks will present “History in a Trunk” to tell of the contingent of 5,000 U.S. troops who were sent to Russia in 1918 to help the British and French protect the Trans-Siberian Railroad and Allied supply lines from the Germans and the revolutionary Bolshevik troops. SAFE @ HOME

Safe@Home by Safe Sitter® is designed for students in grades 4-6 to prepare them to be safe when they are home alone. It teaches students how to practice safe habits, how to prevent unsafe situations and what to do when faced with dangers such as power failures or weather emergencies. Students are also introduced to the Safe Sitter® First Aid Chart and learn a system to help them assess and respond to injuries and illnesses.
