United Way Day of Caring August 20, 2015 • Day of Caring was established in 1996. • Day of Caring was created to promote volunteering and increase awareness of local human services agencies. • Day of Caring is the largest single-day volunteer event in Johnson County. • United Way of Johnson County has 17 agencies that participate each year. • Annually, hundreds of volunteers from local business, governments, faith-based organizations, community volunteers and donors partner with United Way to give service. • Volunteer projects include activities such as: small construction projects, landscaping, painting, assisting clients, as well as companionship for some of our senior population. JCPL is looking for nine volunteers to participate in the Day of Caring. If you are interested, please speak with your Department Manager. Your day includes a great starter breakfast and program!

To the Core Huge thanks to Wendy for picking me up when I locked my keys in the car and to Davin for taking me back to retrieve the car later. Glad I didn’t have to walk in the rain! ~Amber My apologies to Dorothy. In June's Library Scoop, it was reported Dorothy was celebrating her 10th anniversary, when if fact she has been a dedicated employee for 20 years! Many thanks to all who faithfully pay their $2.00 to Jeans Friday. We have raised $504 for Cheers & Tears and $504 for United Way of Johnson County.

Getting to Know… Heather Grantham, Children’s Librarian

If you could choose to stay a certain age forever, what age would it be? I like my age now, 49. I can’t wait to sign-up for AARP next year! If you could learn to do anything, what would it be? Make clothes and learn to use a pattern. If you had to work on only one project for the next year, what would it be? Writing: finish a screenplay and develop other ideas. If you were reincarnated as an animal, what would it be? Probably a bird, what a great perspective of the world from up there. When you have 30 minutes of free time, how do you pass the time? Cooking or sewing. If you could have dinner with only three people (real or fictitious/from any time period/dead or alive), which three people would you choose and why? Sofia Coppola, Lena Dunham and Mindy Kaling. They are talented and successful filmmakers who are great role models for females of all ages wanting to make a career in film-making. What is your idea of fun? If given a chance to skip work for a day, how would you spend the entire day? Stay home! I would cook, sew, watch DVDs, talk/text friends and family, work on scrapbooks and maybe read. If you were stranded on a beach alone, what are five things that you would want to have with you? A very comfy hammock, a straw hat, sunblock, sturdy, comfortable sandals for beach-combing, and plenty of buckets for the treasures I find while beach-combing (seaglass, fossils, bones, shells, and rocks). What was your favorite musical group in middle school? I loved and still love Big Band music. Artie Shaw, the Dorsey brothers, Benny Goodman, Glenn Miller, Duke Ellington, Ella Fitzgerald, Doris Day, Dick Haymes, Woody Herman, Helen O'Connell, Helen Forrest, Les Brown & Mary Ford. Name one thing you miss about being a kid. Going barefoot! I had the toughest skin on my feet, not even a bee sting bothered me. Do you have any phobias? Tight, narrow caves. In two days I went through four caves in Castleton, England with very little trouble. Just last year I panicked in the first tunnel in the underground city of Derinkuyu, Turkey. There were 20 people in the group. Too many for me! What types of food do you NOT eat? I have an allergy to strawberries. Lentils. A friend invited me to dinner at her house and gave me a huge bowl of lentils with mashed potatoes. I could only eat 2 or 3 spoonfuls. My friend's husband told me, "Your eyes are bigger than your stomach.” I replied, "Your wife's eyes are bigger than my stomach."

Getting to Know…

Davin Kolderup, Virtual Branch Manager If you could choose to stay a certain age forever, what age would it be? Unsubscribe from the American youth cult. Being young is great, getting older is better. I suppose at some point all my bones will start to hurt all the time or something, but I’ll cross that bridge when I come to it. If you could learn to do anything, what would it be? I slightly regret not learning to play the guitar. It’s not too late of course, but the kind of obnoxious shoegaze racket I would want to make is neither financially nor logistically feasible at this point in my life. If you had to work on only one project for the next year, what would it be? Listen to all of the music sitting on my hard drive that I haven’t played since I downloaded it. I came across over a dozen Ash Ra Tempel albums I’ve never heard in a folder the other day. Are they any good? Who knows? If you were reincarnated as an animal, what would it be? Cats have a pretty good gig. It seems. On certain days I might opt for one of those fish that live at the bottom of the ocean. Seems peaceful. When you have 30 minutes of free time, how do you pass the time? If I have the house to myself I’ll probably put on some obnoxiously loud music and play some dumb iPhone game while I listen. If I’m with Saskia, I am a jigsaw puzzle and sticker book lackey. If it’s after toddler bedtime, I’m watching a Korean soap opera with Chris or reading a book in my recliner. If you could have dinner with only three people (real or fictitious/from any time period/dead or alive), which three people would you choose and why? I’d pick three of my favorite writers: Iris Murdoch, A.S. Byatt, and John Banville. Voracious intellects and supernaturally erudite. I could just sit back and listen. What is your idea of fun? If given a chance to skip work for a day, how would you spend the entire day? I’d start at the zoo with Chris and Saskia, then drop Saskia off at the babysitter for an afternoon outing. Chris and I went to Dave & Buster’s a few months ago and it was great! It was like Chuck E. Cheese with beer! If you were stranded on a beach alone, what are five things that you would want to have with you? An e-reader with sufficient reading material to keep me busy, a drone that delivers pizza, another drone to delivers coffee, and audiophile-quality stereo setup with at least 500 of my favorite records. What was your favorite musical group in middle school? I really got into Led Zeppelin in middle school. I was very into the great guitar bands of that era, particularly Nirvana, the Smashing Pumpkins, and the Breeders. Name one thing you miss about being a kid. Everything is new and strange when you’re young. If you’re curious and open-minded as a kid, the world just constantly gets bigger and more interesting. I’m still chasing those moments when you read a book, hear a record, or see a movie that makes you sit up a little straighter and think “something is going on here that I don’t completely understand.” It gets harder to find as you get older, but it’s always out there. When you’re young, that’s happening all the time. Do you have any phobias? I’m (mostly) over my fear of dentists and needles, but heights are still a no-go for me. We went to Seattle a few years ago and I was plastered against the wall of the Space Needle observation deck. What types of food do you NOT eat? I’ll eat anything, just not too much of it. Everything in moderation these days. I remember when I didn’t even know what Pepto-Bismol was for.

Super Secrets to Healthy Grilling: Cutting Cancer Risks from HCAs

Some ways of grilling meat can give rise to heterocyclic amines (HCAs), which are believed to cause cancer. HCAs tend to form the longer meat cooks on the grill and when it gets charred or exposed to smoke from fat dripping on the coals. Grilling seafood, vegetables, or fruits doesn't create substantial HCAs. For healthier meat and poultry grilling: • Cook small, lean pieces of meat, which take less time on the grill and produce less smoke from dripping fat. • If you use a charcoal grill, center the food on the grate but push the coals to one side. • Remove visible fat to prevent flare-ups.

Precook for Quicker Grilling Partially cooking meat in the oven, microwave, or on the stove can reduce grilling time and HCAs. Microwaving meat for 2 minutes before grilling releases some of its juices. Some research suggests that if you throw away those juices after microwaving, you may reduce 90% of HCAs. A hot tip: Always grill foods on a preheated grill immediately after precooking to prevent harmful bacteria from forming. Wood-Fired Flavor To add interesting new flavors into grilled foods, use mesquite or hickory chips in your grill. Other hardwoods that add a unique taste include pecan, oak, maple, and apple wood. Soak the chips in water, wine, or apple juice for an hour. Put them on top of the coals, or for gas grills, wrap them in a foil pouch and punch several small holes in it. Put it beneath the gas grill grate or near the flame of a propane grill or on its grate.
