I look forward to continuing to work with you on our newly formed MAC team with Jennifer as our leader! ~Amy Kitchen Monica, Pam, and Amy K. would like to give a shout out to Kelly McCay for all of her hard work and awesome program publicity designs. We have received many comments from staff members and patrons about how wonderful Kelly’s designs are. We wish to say thank you! We could not have done it without her!
Hello, everyone! Have you ever heard of a bottle cap mural? Well, I want to make one for the Children's Department at FRB! I am in need of red, green, blue, and yellow plastic bottle caps. Lids to milk jugs, soda bottles, and water bottles are perfect. Larger ones works as well. If you're interested in contributing, please rinse off your bottle caps and place them in the bucket in FRB’s lounge or send to me via courier. Thank you! ~Sarah Taylor

Hello, everyone! I am very excited to announce that the Juvenile Detention Center and I have decided to extend the book discussion to a year-round program! If you never participated, this is a wonderful, enriching program for juveniles who are currently residing at the detention center. They love having visitors, and are typically very excited to read a new book. If you have participated in the past, you know how true this is! Starting in September, we will be sending a staff member (or two) to the JDC twice a month to lead a book discussion with the teens. The time commitment is minimal, but the impact you can make is immeasurable. Here is where you come in! Please let me know if you would like to lead one of these book discussions. You may go by yourself, or partner up with someone else- it's up to you! You would need to go the first and third Wednesday of your chosen month for a one-hour session with the male and female residents. Once you've volunteered, I'll send you the book list and schedule so you can choose your title and month. If you're new to the program, I will need to get the paperwork to you for a back ground check and volunteer application- current volunteers do not need to resubmit this paperwork. Please feel free to send any questions my way. This really is a wonderful opportunity, for them and for us, and has always been very dear to my heart. I hope you will all consider participating! Thank you! ~ Keeley Payne, FRB Circulation

Getting to Know…
Jennifer Baltz, Marketing & Communications Mgr. If you could choose to stay a certain age forever, what age would it be? I don’t think I could be convinced to stop aging. I enjoy change too much to miss out on the adventure of aging and I think I’d fear loneliness. If you could learn to do anything, what would it be? Teleport/Apparate. Though, I would want to be able to teach others the skill as well, because it would be awkward to be the only person popping in and out of places all the time. If you had to work on only one project for the next year, what would it be? I would focus on all the landscaping I have wanted to do at my house. Get a deck and patio built and plant a bunch of flowers so that there is no more grass left to mow (ugh!). If you were reincarnated as an animal, what would it be? A therapy dog. When you have 30 minutes of free time, how do you pass the time? When I have just a few minutes together I typically break out my Kindle and read in the sun or play a few games of Hearthstone. If you could have dinner with only three people (real or fictitious/from any time period/dead or alive), which three people would you choose and why? I would choose Vin from the Mistborn trilogy, Hermione from Harry Potter, and Gemma Doyle from the Gemma Doyle trilogy because they are all strong, smart, and bold women---and it wouldn’t hurt that they all have some form of magic, which would make for a very interesting dinner. What is your idea of fun? If given a chance to skip work for a day, how would you spend the entire day? I love nature and animals. Given a whole skip day I think I would make use of my zoo membership and spend some time with the orangutans, walruses, and butterflies at the Indianapolis Zoo and Gardens. If you were stranded on a beach alone, what are five things that you would want to have with you? Lots of sun block, a solar powered satellite Wi-Fi hotspot, water, my homemade pork jerky, and my Kindle. What was your favorite musical group in middle school? I wasn’t that into music in junior high but ended up listening to a lot of NSYNC and Backstreet Boys due to my friends’ obsessions. Name one thing you miss about being a kid. Summer camp! Do you have any phobias? Not a fan of tight spaces. What types of food do you NOT eat? I like to try new things (Even bugs; cleaned and prepared, of course!) so the only things I really avoid are those I think I might be allergic to.

Super Secrets to Healthy Grilling Be the hero of your next backyard barbecue by dishing up some delicious and healthy grilling options with these tips from WebMD. Veggies Grilling is a very tasty way to cook vegetables. High temperatures and quick cooking times help preserve their nutrients. Slice them thinly or in chunks for kebabs. The best veggies for the grill are sturdy and develop sweet flavors: • Sweet Peppers 6-8 minutes each side • Onions 5-7 minutes each side
Besides salmon, the best fish to grill are ones that can be cut thickly and cooked with the skin. Consider halibut, tuna, trout, and swordfish. Pizza Yes, you can grill pizza! The grill's intense heat is a lot like a restaurant pizza oven. Keep all your toppings light and cook them beforehand so they heat evenly on the grill. Lightly brush the crust with oil and sear both sides on the grill. Next, add the toppings and cover the grill. Cook about 3-7 minutes, rotating the pizza 90 degrees every minute to prevent burning. Whole-wheat crusts are healthier -- some recipes are specially made for grilling. Linda
• Zucchini and other summer squash 5 minutes each side • Corn 25 minutes • Portabello Mushrooms 7-10 minutes per side • Romaine Lettuce Hearts 3 minutes per side

Fruit Grilling intensifies the sweetness of many fruits including strawberries, peaches, pineapples, bananas, apples, and pears. Wash and cut into pieces, then spear them on skewers or wrap in foil. The trick is to cook with indirect heat for just a few minutes. Turn down the gas or place the fruit on the edges of the grate. Grill on low heat until it is hot and slightly golden. Fish Salmon is almost a grilling tradition -- it cooks well on the grill because its oils keep it moist and help prevent sticking. For medium-rare fillets, cook them about 4 minutes on each side.

Blatant Exposition Man in...
Invasion of the Summer Learning Program (A thrilling 24-page adventure in full color!) Nathan Biberdorf, WRB Circulation "Look! Up in the sky! It's a bird! It's a plane! It's...it's...get out of the way!" CRASH! "Whoops...I keep forgetting that flight isn't one of my superpowers. It's lucky for me that I broke my fall with this pile of soft paperback books checked out from the Johnson County Public Library!" "Well, that's fortunate...and oddly specific." "And well it should, ma'am. For you see, I am...Blatant Exposition Man!" <TRIUMPHANT FANFARE> "They call me that because I provide blatant exposition." "I see. Did you have to dig to the bottom of the superpowers bargain bin, or was that one lying on top?" "Neither! As a young lad, I was struck by a radioactive set of encyclopĂŚdia..." "Yeah, yeah, I get the picture. Don't you have a fire to put out or something?" "No job is too large for Blatant Exposition Man! ... But actually, no, that's better left to trained professionals. I really only...you know, talk and stuff." "Anything in particular you wanted to talk about?" "Why, yes, in fact! I'm here with an urgent message about the JCPL Summer Learning Program!" "Ah. I thought this seemed like an elaborate set-up for a marketing piece." "Ha! You sound a lot of a friend of mine: Break The
Fourth Wall Girl. You almost look like her, except for those conspicuous eyeglasses. Sigh. If only I knew her secret identity..." "Cough...never heard of her. So tell me more about this Summer...Reading Program?" "Summer Learning Program. At JCPL, we want to encourage all kinds of learning: reading, visiting museums, making art projects...if you don't want to read a book, you can always write one instead!" "Nice. So can anyone join, or just world-famous superheroes like yourself." "I can tell you're mocking me, but that's a great lead-in to my next point: The Summer Learning Program is for anyone, young and old! And you can win prizes, like..." "Hover-boots? Invisibility rings? Web-slingers?" "Um...no. We can't actually...they don't...I mean, with this economy...you can get a free book!" "Close enough. Thank you, Blatant Exposition Man...if that's your real name." "Alas, my true identity must remain forever a secret...................It's Gary. I have a wife and two kids. And a parakeet. I work at a grocery store. My favorite color is maroon. My Social Security number is 623—" "That's quite a superpower you've got there." "It's a blessing and a curse." Nathan
