From: Amber To: Staff “Marketing helps us tell everyone what we already know - that we information professionals can empower our communities to be better places. Marketing also challenges us to be accountable to patrons’ needs. Thanks to the MAC department for all they do by helping us promote JCPL!” From: Summer Learning Program Committee To: MAC Dept. The SLP Committee would like to thank Amy and the whole MAC Department for the amazing publicity they created for this year’s summer program. The committee was disappointed in the CSLP artwork this year, and Amy came to the rescue, creating graphics in-house that everyone agreed were a huge improvement. Not only does everything look great, it was delivered to the branches early so we can focus on promoting the program in May. They went above and beyone and we can’t wait to share their work with our patrons. Thank you!

Cyclops Which team does Captain America lead? The Avengers What is the name of Green Hornet's chauffer? KATO What superhero carries the Lasso of Truth? Wonder Woman What is the name of Thor’s hammer? Mjolnir (pronounced: miyolneer) Name the elderly relative that Peter Parker, otherwise known as Spider-Man, lives with. Aunt May
To: Sarah Taylor Congratulations on your completion and graduation of Leadership Johnson County! From: Amber To: Wendy, Cindy, Erin, Sue S., Bobbi, Davin, Scott, Monica and MAC Without your hard work and wonderful help, the Volunteer Appreciation Dinner could not have been the success it was! Getting to Know…
Melanie Johnson, Collection Services Manager If you could choose to stay a certain age forever, what age would it be? I would relive my 20’s…at the time I felt like I had the world by the tail. After I hit 30, reality sunk in. If you could learn to do anything, what would it be? Play the piano. If you had to work on only one project for the next year, what would it be? I would finish remodeling my home…however, I would also need to come into a substantial amount of money. If you were reincarnated as an animal, what would it be? A cat. When you have 30 minutes of free time, how do you pass the time? Nap…which is why I’d like to be a cat. If you could have dinner with only three people (real or fictitious/from any time period/dead or alive), which three people would you choose and why? My maternal grandmother and my paternal grandfather. They had both passed before my parents even knew each other. I always wished I could have met them. The third person would be Jesus…I’ve got lots of questions for him. What is your idea of fun? If given a chance to skip work for a day, how would you spend the entire day? I’d spend the day with a friend…just hanging out. If you were stranded on a beach alone, what are five things that you would want to have with you? Water, food, sunscreen, books, and some type of gun for protection from wild animals. What was your favorite musical group in middle school? Kansas Name one thing you miss about being a kid. My mom’s cooking. Do you have any phobias? Being trapped in a small space…gives me the heebie jeebies just thinking about it. *shudder* What types of food do you NOT eat? The really hot, spicy stuff.

SWAT Spot: The Eyes Have It Linda Kilbert, WRB Branch Manager
May is Healthy Vision Month, so in observance, here are some tips from WebMD for keeping your peepers healthy: 1. Eat for Good Vision Foods rich in nutrients such as omega-3 fatty acids, lutein, zinc and vitamins C and E may help reduce your risk of age-related vision problems such as macular degeneration and cataracts. Good nutrition also plays a part in maintaining a healthy weight, which will make you less likely to develop diabetes, a leading cause of blindness in adults. 2. Quit Smoking Smoking is harmful to not only your lungs, but can make you more likely to develop cataracts, optic nerve damage and macular degeneration. 3. Wear Sunglasses Too much exposure to UV rays can increase your likelihood of getting cataracts and macular degeneration. Choose sunglasses that block 99-100% of both UVA and UVB rays. Wraparound lenses are good since they help protect your eyes from the side and polarized lenses reduce glare when driving.
5. Look Away From the Computer Screen Staring at a computer screen for too long can cause all kinds of eye issues, such as eyestrain, blurry vision, trouble focusing at a distance, dry eyes and headaches. To protect your eyes, make sure your glasses or contact lens prescription is up-to-date and adequate for computer use. Position your computer so that your eyes are level with the top of the monitor. It’s also important to rest your eyes every 20 minutes, by looking at something 20 feet away for 20 seconds. 6. Visit Your Eye Doctor Regularly Getting regular eye exams is important for maintaining healthy eyes. Such exams can spot diseases such as glaucoma, which have no symptoms but can have disastrous effects if not treated early. If you haven’t had your eyes checked lately, make it a priority to do it this month. Linda
4. Use Safety Eyewear Be sure to wear protective goggles whenever you work with hazardous or airborne materials on the job or at home. Also, avoid eye injuries by wearing eye protection if you engage in sports such as ice hockey, racquetball and lacrosse.

IT’S A BIRD! IT’S A PLANE! It’s the 2015 Summer Learning Program Every Hero Has a Story! Keeley Payne, Circulation Services, FRB By now, you have probably heard rumors floating around that the Summer Learning committee have changed things up for the coming summer- and they are true! We began most noticeably by changing our name from Summer Reading to Summer Learning. Why, you ask? Because we also changed the format of the program! Studies have shown that children of all ages suffer from summer learning loss. In an attempt to lessen the effects, we have decided to implement a more active, hands on program for our children. Rather than simply reading for all program credit, patrons can now choose to follow “create” and “discover” tracks as well. This summer, patrons can do things like attend museums, write poetry, or explore local parks to get Summer Learning credit. There will be several fun suggestions to follow listed in the reading logs, but patrons should be able to get creative with these tracks and have fun! We’ve also changed the prize structure a little. Rather than offering choices at various age levels, we’ve selected one prize for the first, second, and third tiers. We are very excited about our second tier prizeacross the ages, we will be distributing a coupon book! Several very generous sponsors have donated to this prize, and Amy and her staff has done an incredible job of putting everything together into a brightly colored coupon book with perforated pages. Be sure to check them out! Summer Learning representatives will be coming to your buildings to make sure everyone is trained on the upgrades to Evanced, as well as all of the exciting changes to the program itself. We hope you share our excitement and enjoy all of the great changes to the Summer Learning Program! Keeley
Online Only Pre-registration Monday, May 25th – Sunday, May 31st Anyone pre-registering online will automatically be entered into a drawing for a FAMILY 4-PACK of KINGS ISLAND general admission tickets for the 2015 season!

You Can’t Forget Books Because They Never Existed Nathan Biberdorf, WRB Circulation People tell me we won't remember the books anymore That soon they'll be long gone Replaced by something new and electronic And that one day the only ones who remember books Will be the elderly Scoffing at the latest technological marvel of the age While the great-great-grandchildren nod Absorbed in the other world they see through their ocular implants But I don't think that will happen Oh, time will trod on, of course Relentlessly, as it always has And perhaps the books will pass away (For time is harsh to anything so organic) But I don't believe we will forget them Any more than we've forgotten the dinosaurs and pirates and fairy queens Cowboys, mermaids, dragons, and ancient rings that can teach you how to fly Princesses dressed all in silk and wise old hermits that live in caves all alone You can't forget anything so magical and wonderful Even if it never existed
Because of course, books don't exist Not in the way we think A book is a bundle of pages All covered over in words But it's much more than that Random words on pages do not a book make Any more than random cells construct a person There's order to a book But more than that, a soul Something ineffable and intangible And above all, utterly impossible Books are dreams stitched to paper And do not stand up to close scrutiny in the morning light How can thoughtless ink become a thought? How can feather-light paper carry the weight of the world? The whole thing smells of fairytale The sort of thing you'd read about in... ...now what were those things called again? Ah, that's right: Books We mustn't forget the books Because in the end It's books that remember us. Nathan
