Libraries Transform Torn between book club and happy hour? Why not do both? Gather round as we make a toast and take a look back at the first year of Stout Stories.

Stout Stories is a hopping JCPL book club for adults 21 and older that meets at local breweries and wineries the first Monday of every month.

Locations have included Taxman, Planetary Brewing, Scotty’s Brew Club, Shale Creek, Mashcraft, Shallo’s and Mallow Run Winery.

“Stout Stories has really grown as a group, no longer is it just library patrons meeting together to discuss books. Every person has something to contribute to the conversation and it’s wonderful to see friendships grow and strengthen over our bond for books,” said Erin Cataldi, JCPL Librarian.

Each month the group gets together in a laid back atmosphere and has dynamic conversations about the selected books.

“Every month, I look forward to our conversations.

I have always loved my job and my community, but Stout Stories has made me feel more invested than I ever thought possible,” said Keeley Payne, JCPL Librarian.

“People have really started to come out of their shells and open up; I couldn’t ask for a greater meeting of the minds,” adds Erin.

Join JCPL librarians Erin Cataldi and Keeley Payne for this monthly book club. Whether you’re a milleni-”ale” or an older “vintage,” come out and meet like-minded individuals. Together we’ll put the “pub” in public library!

Friends of the Library advocate for and support library services and resources while sharing their love of books with the community. They are committed to raising the standard of excellence of our library, while fostering a positive relationship between the Library and the Johnson County communities.

Through book sales and fundraisers, they are able to fund programs and sponsor activities that are not part of the regular library budget, which bring together people who value libraries and literacy.

Reciprocal borrowers may place holds and check out any on-shelf item. Digital content, such as e-books, are not available to reciprocal borrowers.

Non-commercial use of the room is at no charge. Business use and private social events have a nominal charge. The Study Rooms at the Trafalgar and White River branches are also open for not-for-profit and business use.

Adult Learning Center (ALC) The Adult Learning Center (ALC) of the Johnson County Public Library provides small group or individualized one-on-one tutoring in Adult Basic Education and English as a second language. Award Announcement JCPL Adult Learning Center Coordinator Receives Statewide Award Johnson County Public Library is pleased to announce that our Adult Learning Center (ALC) Coordinator, Wendy Preilis, has been selected to receive the Indiana Library Federation Tom Zupancic Literacy in Libraries Award for 2016. The Tom Zupancic Literacy in Libraries Award honors and recognizes community advocacy of literacy in libraries by an individual or organization in cooperation with a library.

Wendy Preilis, ALC Coordinator

ALC programs offer free literacy services in adult basic education and English as a Second Language. Wendy provides weekly programs for adults wishing to increase their English communication skills, reading skills and overall understanding of the American culture. The Adult Learning Center also partners with Johnson Memorial Hospital to provide the Baby TALK program, providing new families with a literacy packet, books and encouraging them to use the library.

Wendy leads JCPL’s Literacy Awareness Month committee. Each year the committee works to raise awareness of adult illiteracy and ALC programming. She also serves on a variety of local committees representing the Johnson County Public Library, including the Leadership Johnson County Public Relations Committee and the Immediate Services Council (United Way of Johnson County).

Wendy enjoys working in the community she grew up in and hopes that her efforts help to make Johnson County a great place to live.

The Adult Learning Center is looking for volunteers to tutor adults with low English literacy skills and English as a Second Language learners. No foreign language knowledge or experience is necessary to help improve our students’ lives.

Visit a StoryWalk Second StoryWalk Now Open In October, JCPL, Greenwood/White River Rotary Club and Johnson County Parks and Recreation celebrated Greenwood’s first StoryWalk and a new Little Free Library with a great big grand opening at Independence Park.

Families read the first book, “Count Down to Fall” by Fran Hawk, enjoyed outdoor activities and went trick-or-treating during the Halloween themed event.

StoryWalks and Little Free Libraries are popping up all over Johnson County. In summer 2016, JCPL and Franklin Parks and Recreation celebrated Franklin’s first StoryWalk with a grand opening ceremony at the Urban Forest in Franklin.

Since the celebration, a Little Free Library has been added and two additional stories have been featured.

The weather may be getting colder but you can still visit Independence Park or the Franklin Urban Forest and stroll along the trails while reading the different books. Be on the lookout for a new book at each StoryWalk every two months.
