Issue Date: Week Commencing 14/03/16 Full assignment due end of session day: Monday Group 16/05/16 Thursday group 19/05/16 This assignment covers Grading Criteria from the following unit: Unit 34 2D Animation Production Learning Outcome 2 - Be able to devise a 2D animation with soundtrack Learning Outcome 3 - Be able to produce a 2D animation with soundtrack Learning Outcome 4 - Be able to evaluate audience responses to own 2D animation work. AIM/PURPOSE The animation industry includes both large production companies and individuals working on small digital projects. Animation on all scales requires people with fresh, exciting ideas for new work, whilst larger companies will need individuals with specialist skills, such as storyboarding, or the evidence to prove that they can develop them. You are required to have the ability to develop fresh ideas for content which will engage the chosen audience. Also, a good animator will take into account at all stages the role of animation as communication, whether this be for entertainment or information. It always aims to move beyond simply creating moving shapes on a screen. THE ASSIGNMENT You will be taking on the role of a 2D animator tasked with creating a short animated extract to showcase your up and coming graphic novel online. Your Brief: To bring your graphic novel to life via a short animation that is a minimum of 45 seconds long with a soundscape, this could include vocals, sound effects and/or music. You will need to include text and stills imaginatively from your panels to help tell your story through animation. You can choose, or combine the following animation techniques: Stop Frame Cut-out stop frame paper animation that is photographed and digitised, a stop frame photography animation, or digital art based stop frame animation Motion Comic Using digital, or traditonal artwork, or photography to animate content that concentrates on camera movement and transitions. Any other technique MUST be approved by me first.

Is it the same as your graphic novel or will you try to appeal to other audiences? You will want to think about: • Age • Gender • Interests/tastes • Viewing contexts – Where would you publish your animation online and who could access it? Where will you publish it to maximise publicity for your graphic novel? You will need to think about how you will bring your graphic novel to life via the: • Characters • Backgrounds • Storylines • Audio What is essential to animate your graphic novel? • What part of your panel will you animate? Include and explain your graphic novel artwork or photos. Do you need to produce extra work for animation purposes? • Storyboarding the content of your animation – What will happen?! • Consider all the movements that are needed and how you will keep continuity? • What perspective/point of view will you use? Consider camera angles, shots and moments • What changes or extents of an action or movement will you need to include, think about how many frames per second you could use e.g how smooth do you want it to be? • Will you include any titles, credits or written speech bubbles/ narration? How will they be animated? • Soundscape design, what sounds do you need, where will you source them and how will it support the visuals? You will need to show the design process of your animation. What imagery you will use from your graphic novel, what is the narrative and how you will make it all move. Producing Your Animation (P3, M3, D3) You will need to evidence your project by keeping a log documenting your personal technical and creative ability. You will need to evidence how you have applied your planning into your animation via a log. Cover the production process, software use (imagery and audio) e.g order of artwork, transitions, edits, movements, use of text, synching of audio and imagery, exporting, publishing online etc to show how your animation has come together. You will need to develop questionnaires for people to complete, collect the results and examine responses, then evaluate your animation yourself. You will need to comment on audience responses and if necessary respond to any critical feedback in your own evaluation EVIDENCE REQUIRED FOR ASSESSMENT Electronic submission via a Word document or Powerpoint, blog, video/audio commentary that documents your planning, production work, peer reviews and final evaluation. Exported minimum 45 second animation video file with soundscape link to video via You Tube, Behance etc.
