AIM/PURPOSE 2D Animation has become an increasingly important media form and examples can be seen in platforms as different as advertising, feature films, mobile phone content, the internet and television. Good 2D animation skills are also very important in the computer games industry, especially in the production of indie games. Before you start your practical work, it is always useful to investigate what other practitioners have done before you and to have an understanding of what is needed to inform your planning and production of your own work. Therefore, you will be looking at what animation actually is, animation and production techniques used in historical and contemporary examples of work, where you will develop understanding in such things as persistence of vision and frame rates. THE ASSIGNMENT You will be taking on the role of publisher creating a chapter for a e-book teaching students about 2D animation. This book is aimed for amateur animators so needs to be clear and easy to learn from. You will need to include information about what animation is, how 2D animation has developed, from pioneers to contemporary work and detail traditional and digital animation techniques. You will need to focus on animation techniques, the intention of the animator, the audience, their impact on the visual style and effectiveness of the animation. You will need to include a time line, stills and playable videos of 2D animation examples to discuss and compare.
Hopwood Hall College Extended Diploma Creative Media Production (Games) Arts & Performing Arts TASKS Understand the development of 2D animation (P1, M1, D1) • Introduce the e-book and explain what animation is via the illusion of movement, the persistence of vision, phi phenomenon, frame rate and the 12 principles of animation. You will need to show the range and development of animation by selecting key pioneers, investigating how animation has evolved. Compare and contrast how animation has developed over time paying attention to the content of the work, the techniques used to produce it and their audiences. • Development pioneers (P1, M1, D1) How have these development pioneers paved the way for animation as we know it today? What techniques and animations were important and how did they work? Create a time line of important inventors, devices and events with a couple of in-depth examples. You could discuss: Joseph Plateau - Phenakistoscope, William Homer - Zoetrope, Emile Reynaud - Praxinoscope, Kinetoscope, Eadweard Muybridge , George Méliès, Lumiere Brothers, Walt Disney (pre 1950’s), Hanna Barbera, Warner Bros • Contemporary work (P1, M1, D1) You need to choose 2 different creative areas, such as: • TV/Film e.g Monty Python, A Scanner Darkly, Studio Ghibli, Simpsons, Futurama, Happy Tree Friends, Adventure Time, Bobs Burgers, Archer etc • Music Videos e.g Daft Punk one More Time, Radiohead Paranoid Android, Gorillaz etc • Games: e.g Braid, Fez, Limbo, Battle Block Theatre, Broken Age, Walking Dead, Valiant Hearts, Child of Light, War of the Worlds, Super Meat Boy, Binding of Issac etc You will need to provide an overview of how diverse 2D animation is in contemporary animation in terms of visual style and technique. Choose at least 1 example of a key animation from each media sector to evidence how techniques, formats and styles vary. How does the visual style and audience impact the animation and its appeal? Techniques for animation (P1, M1, D1) Provide an overview of techniques used to produce traditional and contemporary animation. What applications/software and approaches to production do your examples use? How does this impact the animation? • Traditional Animation e.g cel animation, hand drawn techniques • Digital Animation e.g Rotoscoping, digital drawings and use of animation software e.g Photoshop, Flash • Conclusion of e-book chapter and what you have learned.
