AIM/PURPOSE How do you think other artists influence other artists? New art and design work is often created by developing others ideas from the past other people’s work then putting them into today’s context. This is part of cultural change and helps us see the world in new and exciting ways. This project will help you to develop research skills, seeking primary sources as well as secondary source materials from books, magazines, journals and the internet. Knowing how to use contextual research to influence your own work is a valuable part of the idea generation stage of the art and design cycle. THE ASSIGNMENT For this assignment you will be taking on the role of a researcher exploring historical and contemporary artists and movements. You will look at exploring techniques in the style of Cubism, Surrealism, Pop Art and Graffiti to help generate ideas and influences for your Book Covers project, In The Style of. You will also analyse artists who work in these styles, their impact on the art world and contemporary culture.


Hopwood Hall College Level 2 Extended Certificate in Art and Design (Graphics) Arts & Performing Arts TASKS You will need to explore and document different art movements and artists, exploring how they communicate their ideas, their techniques and how it could be useful to the generation of your own ideas. You need to choose 4 Artists (2 historical, 2 contemporary) from the art movements we are investigating in class. You could choose from: -

Cubism e.g Picasso Juan Gris, Fernand Leger, Georges Braque Surealism e.g Magritte, Dali Andre Breton, Man Ray Pop Art e.g Andy Warhol, Roy Lichtenstein, Richard Hamiltion Urban Grafiti e.g Banksy, Lady Pink, Keith Haring, JR

You will need to: 1. Create a time line with dates and images showing these movements chronologically. Artist Techniques (P1, M1, D1) Try at least 1 artistic technique inspired by an artist in that movement with an evaluation of the results and how successful the technique was. Art Movement and Artist Overview (P1, M1, D1) Write an overview of each movement, the artist that works in that style and examples of their work. Connection to Lifestyle, Culture and Own Work (P2, P3, P2, M3, D2, D3) You will need to think about how the techniques from the artists and styles of the art movements could be useful to your book covers project. Can the influence of these artists be seen in modern examples of graphic design and art? Don’t forget you need to reference the source of where you found your research e.g web links and books EVIDENCE REQUIRED FOR ASSESSMENT Evidence you can submit: -

Describe the impact of two major movements on contemporary art, craft and design. To achieve a merit grade the evidence must show the learner is able to: Investigate a diverse range of historical and contemporary practice from different movements, recording findings and annotating sources. Explain the influences of selected historical and contemporary movements To achieve a distinction grade the evidence must show that, in addition to the pass and merit criteria, the learner is able to: Analyse a diverse range of historical and contemporary practice from different movements, evaluating findings and sources. Analyse the influences of selected historical and contemporary movements. Learning Aim B: Explore art, craft and design examples relevant to your own work To achieve a pass grade the evidence must show the learner is able to: Select and record at east four art, craft and design examples from two movements, describing how they relate to own work.
