Issue Date: 02/10/15 Full assignment due end of session day: 06/11/15 This assignment covers Grading Criteria from the following unit: Unit 14: Photography Briefs Learning Aim A: Investigate photography practice AIM/PURPOSE In this unit you will look at the photography industry and study the work of contemporary and historical photographers.How do you think photographers influence other photographers? New work is often created by developing others ideas from the past other people’s work then putting them into today’s context. This is part of cultural change and helps us see the world in new and exciting ways. This project will help you to develop research skills, seeking primary sources as well as secondary source materials from books, magazines, journals and the internet. Knowing how to use contextual research to influence your own work is a valuable part of the idea generation stage of the creative cycle. THE ASSIGNMENT A selection of games companies want to promote their games to a different audience at Manchester Art Gallery. They want to do this by showing an exhibition on concept art photography to showcase the visualisation of games and their art style. For this assignment you will be taking on the role of a photography researcher exploring the photography industry and historical and contemporary photographers. You will need to investigate examples of traditional landscapes, architechture and portraiture to inform the planning of your game concept photographs in the next project. Your research needs to document all of your findings and ideas to show what you know about the photography industry and how other photographers have influenced your ideas for a photography shoot. You need to choose 4 Photographers (2 historical (anything before 1950), 2 contemporary (after 1950)).You can choose any game company that you would like to research for and any game you like, but you might want to consider games such as The Last of Us, The Walking Dead, Borderlands, Metal Gear Solid, Bioshock, Assasins Creed, Tomb Raider etc

Provide an overview of the photography industry, you will need to discuss the different types of photography and how photographers will have different target audiences. You can use the work we did in class and expand on this. 2. You will need to explore and document 4 different photographers (2 historical (anything before 1950), 2 contemporary (after 1950)). • You need to reference the source of where you found your research e.g web links, books, art galleries etc along with any other research you found, the photographer’s name, a selection of their photographs and at least 1 image to analyse. • Try to choose a variety of photography contextual influences to look at that will help you to generate ideas for the concept photography for your game. You will want to choose photographers that have work that is a similar visual style, with similar locations and themes to what your game has. You want to look at photography that can be connected to your game that can help you with different approaches that you might not have thought of in your own work. • You will want to explain the target audience and the elements and the principles of the photograph to help you analyse its visual style. • You will need to consider how the photographer communicates their ideas, their techniques and how it could be useful to the generation of concept photography ideas for you and your game photography. • Photographers can also influenced by external factors, e.g. war, politics, social change, technology. Consider any of these factors that have had an impact on your photographs, such the equipment the photographer used and where and when the photographer was working. You can choose practitioners that you feel are relevant, but as a starting point you could choose from: Photography: - Landscapes e.g Ansel Adams or Fay Godwin, John Blakemore, Andreas Gursky, Alex Boyd - Portraits e.g Rankin or Cindy Sherman, Nan Goldin, David la Chapelle, Diane Arbus, Cecil Beaton, Annie Leibovitz, Angus McBean - Architechture e.g Dennis Gilbert, Scott Slavin, Hufton + Crow EVIDENCE REQUIRED FOR ASSESSMENT An overview of the photography industry and target audiences, Investigation into 4 different photographers (2 historical (anything before 1950), 2 contemporary (after 1950)) and how they could influence your own ideas. This can be on Word/Powerpoint/Prezi etc

To achieve a merit grade the evidence must show the learner is able to: Review and present diverse examples of photography effectively, identifying the photographers involved and explaining the characteristics and factors influencing the images To achieve a distinction grade the evidence must show that, in addition to the pass and merit criteria, the learner is able to: Analyse and present diverse examples of photography effectively, identifying the photographers involved and evaluating the characteristics and factors influencing the images
