AIM/PURPOSE In this unit you will learn how to independently produce digital photographs to a specified brief and with a particular audience in mind. You will develop your skills in photography by exploring the various techniques and considerations involved in shooting in different conditions during the day, inside, outside, and capturing objects and people. You will take what skills you learned from the first assignment and apply them to produce a creative set of photographs. THE ASSIGNMENT For this assignment you take on the role of a blogger and photographer for the gaming blog Kotaku where you will be taking game-related photographs. The brief is: Produce a set of real-life photographs inspired by games. All photographs will be judged as part of a fan art competition for their skill and creativity. You will be required to: “Produce a minimum of 4 real-life game inspired photographs that have 2 interior and 2 exterior shots. They need to be creative with justification of your choice of game, characters and/or location and how they represent the visual style of game.� You will need to show that you have thought about how to set up the most realistic and creative shots to pay tribute to your game. Your photographs can be in any style that you feel is appropriate to explore the landscapes, buildings, objects, people and visual themes that are connected to your game. You will need to make sure that you fully justify your ideas from the planning stages, to taking your photos, editing them, right through to your evaluation.

Remember you need 4 photographs with 2 interior and 2 exterior shots. This can be recorded by brainstorms, mood boards of inspiring imagery, research of primary and secondary sources for inspiration, discussions, sketches etc You will need to think about which ideas are best, ask for 2 sets of feedback and consider alternative approaches if needed to develop your idea. You will need to consider which idea is better suited to the brief and what techniques you will use as part of a plan for your idea. You may want to use the peer feedback sheet and other hand-outs that are on Its Learning to help you cover all of this. C.2 Considerations for digital photographers You will need to show considerations of practical elements for your shoot and the availability of resources, such as: • Studio space and bookings • Outline the mise-en-scene of your photo shoot. How are you going to consider the 5 elements? What focus/framing, angle, composition etc are you going to use? • Equipment e.g camera and tripods and when they are available. • Weather for outside shoots. Do you have a plan B? • Permissions from places and people for equipment and entering photo locations. • Risk assessments for health and safety. You may want to use the shoot plan and other hand-outs that are on Its Learning to help you cover all of this. C.3 Production of digital photographs for a media product ● Generate your photographs! ● Use your digital photography techniques from the last assignment, thinking about the brief, composition and mise en scène from your planning. • Keep a log of what you did when on location e.g what settings, framing you used so that you can write it up after shooting and to help you select the best images for the blog. ● Adhere to the correct file naming and saving procedures, thinking about file size so that the images work towards a professional standard. You will need to produce as evidence, fully annotated: • Contact sheets of raw images, with descriptions and analysis of techniques you tried. • Contact sheets of the unused images and why you didn’t use them • Edited versions (make sure you try different edits to choose the best) • Details of re-shoots of photographs (if any) • Produce and present your final images by printing them out and mounting them on card for presenting to the group and for your portfolio. You may want to use the shooting,editing and printing hand-out that is on Its Learning to help you cover all of this. D.2 Self-evaluation of your technical digital photography skills As part of your self-evaluation of your skills you will need to consider: ● Using digital technology - your camera and Photoshop • Focus/framing • Use of mise en scène • Composition • Lighting - Natural or artificial D.3 Self-evaluation of your digital photography work ● Fulfilment of the brief - how do your photographs meet the brief? ● Creative intent at the start of the project and the meaning you wanted to communicate compared to the results from your actual photographs ● Include at lest 3 peer reviews of your final photographs and refer to them to help review your work You may want to use the evaluation and peer feedback sheet that is on Its Learning to help you cover all of this.
