We use cameras to record an event, document something or capture a moment in time. Making a good photograph is essentially about learning to capture exciting visual qualities through a view finder. In this assignment you will explore, experiment with and learn how to use cameras and photography techniques to help you produce photographs to a specific creative brief. THE ASSIGNMENT Your brief is linked to your Photography Contextual Studies assignment. You will be taking on the role of a photographer developing a series of digital photographs (at least 6 images) that will contribute towards an exhibition that promotes games at Manchester Art Gallery. You will develop the ideas and influences for your game photography and will pick one of the following to focus your photography on: • Characters, • Environments • Architecture Your photographs can be in any style that you feel is appropriate to explore the landscapes, buildings, objects, people and visual themes that are connected to your game. You will need to make sure that you fully justify your ideas from the planning stages, to taking your photos, editing them, right through to your evaluation.

Hopwood Hall College Level 2 Extended Certificate in Art and Design (Graphics) Arts & Performing Arts TASKS Plan, generate and develop ideas (P1, M1, D1) Plan at least 2 initial different ideas that you could use for your final photographs. This needs to be recorded by brainstorms, mood boards of inspiring imagery. Google maps etc. You will need to think about which idea is best, ask for feedback via the review sheet and consider alternative approaches if needed to develop your idea. You will need to weigh up which idea is better suited to the brief and what techniques you will use as part of a plan for your idea. How do your contextual link to your game photographs? Select a final idea that you want to use as your final images (P2, M2, D2) When you have selected your idea, explain why you have chosen it and develop your idea so that you have everything planned before your shoot. You need to complete a shoot plan, risk assessment and a proposal of how you meet the brief so that you are fully prepared for when you complete your photo shoot. You will need to look at 2 primary sources to help your photo shoot planning e.g sketching model poses, land/city scape sketches etc. Develop and refine techniques, equipment and processes (P3, M3, D3) (P4, M4, D4) As you start photographing and editing your final images you will need to keep a visual journal to discuss the techniques you use with your camera and within Photoshop, along with the strengths and weaknesses of your results and how it is working to the brief. You will need to produce as evidence, fully annotated: • An evaluation of how your photo shoot went. You will need to explain what camera settings you used, how you framed a subject, composed your picture, health and safety, how you downloaded your images, your general file organisation, file formats you used when saving. • Contact sheets of raw images you took, with descriptions and analysis of techniques you tried. • Edited versions of your photographs, make sure you try different edits per photograph to choose the best. You will also need to think carefully about what techniques you like and want to use for your final images, which is where you need to analyse how you took and edited your pictures in Photoshop. Evidence of how you have selected and refined your images (print screens) • Details of re-shoots of photographs (if any) • Produce and present your final images by printing them out to A3 size and mounting them for presenting to the group • Include a peer review of your photographs • Complete a final evaluation of your photographs and of the project experience, There are hand-outs in unit 14 class resources, project hand-outs to help you if you need it.
