AIM/PURPOSE You have already learned about the use of sound in the media and and games sector and how a sound designer would work via the techniques and procedures for recording audio in different locations and under differing conditions. You will now apply these techniques for a game soundscape to edit and review in the light of your learning experience. You will put into practice the work of the dialogue editor, music editor and sound effects editor, editing sound that creates meaning for game visuals. THE ASSIGNMENT You will take on the role of a sound designer tasked with the creation of a 2D retro game soundscape. You will be resposible for the sound effects and music for the game from the idea generation and justification of each sound, to recording and editing with the responsibility for the whole sound production process. You will need to ensure that you: • Produce an effective library of on and off screen sound effects/environmental sounds to choose from • A suitable soundtrack or soundtracks that have been edited down and reduced from an exisiting piece of music Both of these need will need to be ready for use in your 2D retro game. You will need to document your plannning and technical work evidencing how you you have thought about your sounds, along with how you have produced and edited them with a final reflection on the whole process.
Hopwood Hall College BTEC Extended Certificate in Creative Digital Media Production (Games) Arts & Performing Arts TASKS PLANNING YOU GAME SOUNDSCAPE B.1 (Unit 04, 2C.P5, M5, D5) You will need to show that you have researched and planned your sound effects, environmental sounds and music effectively in the form of: • A mindmap of initial ideas linked to your 2D retro game • A sound effects list of off and on screen sounds you may need, why and how you plan on using them. Will you be able to record using Foley techniques or will you need to use sampled copyright free sounds? • A choice of different copyright free music tracks and how you plan to edit them to suit the game. See Its Learning for links to sound websites that you could use RECORDING AND EDITING OF SOUND EFFECTS B.1, B.2, B.4 (Unit 12 2B.P4,M4,D4), (Unit 04, 2C.P5, M5, D5) Recording your sound effects You will need to consider the audio environment e.g outside, inside, different rooms and how this will help your recording: You must ensure that when you are recording you: • • • • • • • •
Produce an equipment list Source, connect and test recording equipment Conduct sound level checks Take precautions to avoid background noise Record audio Log recordings using audio log Import audio to editing application Save raw audio in a suitable format
Use the recording hand outs to help you monitor and log what you are doing. Your sound effects need to be: ● Edited to improve the sound via effects and cuts etc • Saved appropriately with a copy of the original and new version with easy to find names You will need to keep a technical log of your editing within Audacity for each audio track to evidence your working.
Hopwood Hall College BTEC Extended Certificate in Creative Digital Media Production (Games) Arts & Performing Arts TASKS EDITING SOURCED MUSIC B.1, B.2, B.5 (Unit 12 2B.P5, M5, D5) (Unit 04, 2C.P5, M5, D5) Your music needs to be: • Set to a pre-determined running time appropriate for your game and on a loop e.g 30 seconds, 1 minute, this can be done by removing content from the middle but not the beginning or end ● It needs to play smoothly and avoid clicks or sudden edits You will need to keep a technical log of your editing within Audacity for each audio track to evidence your working. APPLYING SOUNDS INTO GAME • You will need to import your sounds individually • You will need to make sure the timing of your sounds is correct by synchronising each sound. How have you timed the on and off screen screen movements. You will need to keep a technical log of your editing within Audacity for each audio track to evidence your working. EDITING DIALOGUE - EVALUATION AND REVIEW B.1, B.2, B.3 (Unit 12 2B.P3,M3,D3) and C.3 (Unit 4 2C.P6, M6, D6) Finally, you will need to edit dialogue. This will not be for the game that you have made, but for an interview about your game and its sound. You will interview each other in pairs about the sound production process that you went through when making the sound for your game. You need to have a dialogue between two people and follow this process: ● Plan the questions you are going to ask • Record the interview • Shorten the original recording and show improvement in quality, flow and meaning in Audacity • Avoid clicks, breathing, background sounds etc and clipping ends of words This interview will be marked as both an example of audio dialogue editing and as a summary and evaluation of the work you have produced. For your evaluation you will want to consider: • • • •
How it meets the aims of the brief How it sticks to your original idea and plan. The strengths of your audio (what worked well?) Areas for improvement (what could be better?)
Hopwood Hall College BTEC Extended Certificate in Creative Digital Media Production (Games) Arts & Performing Arts EVIDENCE REQUIRED FOR ASSESSMENT: • • • • •
