ON THE THE OTHER OTHER SIDE SIDE OF OF THE THE CHEQUE CHECK ON Elaine Garnett
Since graduating, I have been fortunate to get straight into the broadcast industry, working in advertising sales. Although I have worked mostly in television, I also have experience working in radio and newspaper. My career at Channel 12 has allowed me the opportunity to work with hundreds of local businesses and to get involved within the community, with business associations and charities that are close to my heart- all of which have been tremendously fulfilling. Today I continue to do all of these things as well as teach the Sales Promotion course for the Advertising program at Durham College. This has been an incredible experience, to be a graduate of Durham College and then come back full circle as a teacher in the same program that launched my career. Being back in the classroom, filled with students full of curiosity, enthusiasm and creativity is a privilege for me. They are our future Advertising Executives, Art Directors, Sales Managers, Agency CEO’s, and teaching in a way to pass success on to them‌ And that makes it all Once I graduated from the Advertising worthwhile! program at Durham College, I began my career at Saatchi & Saatchi where I was hired immediately as a Media Assistant. I worked on the Toyota account for 8 months before I decided to make the leap over to OMD to further advance my career. Over the last 5 years at OMD, I have risen through the ranks, and I have been promoted three times, most recently to Strategy Supervisor. Not only do I work on National accounts such as Mars Canada, Wrigley, and M&M Meat Shops to name a few, I also oversee a staff of four. I have participated in many New Business pitches and have recently been nominated for a Media Innovation Award. While I continue to grow my career at OMD, teaching has always been a passion. When the opportunity came knocking to teach the Media Studies course, I jumped at the chance. Being able to teach students the value of Media and share my experiences in my career has been invaluable. There are many areas of opportunity in media for a recent graduate, and helping students understand the benefits of this career is ultimately going to ensure they have an exciting and prosperous future. I have truly come full circle and back to Durham College, the school that prepared and guided me towards the successful career I have today.
