MEDALLION HOME Makes Quality A Priority

By Renee Garrison

Medallion Home is a family business, building homes and neighborhoods since 1984. The company was founded by Carlos Beruff, whose goal has always been to create high-quality homes that appeal to all walks of life. Headquartered in Sarasota, Medallion Home is now one of the premier semicustom home builders in Southwest Florida. The company continues to do well because of its core values and financial durability. With a solid reputation for quality, customer service, and integrity, Medallion Home has built thousands of semi-custom homes, including The Lakes of Mount Dora, an Active Adult Community designed for those over 55 who want to enjoy their life to the fullest. The Lakes of Mount Dora began in 2006 as 550+ acres of pasture. The company expects to build 950 homes, with approximately 500 complete at this time. The development has four and a half miles of connected man-made waterways which accommodate fishing boats, kayaks, canoes; and paddle boats. The waterways are stocked and it’s catch and release. “A 55+ Community, in my opinion, is a playground for those of us that are young at heart even though we may not have the same physical energy as a young person,” says Angie Cable, Sales Associate for Medallion Home. “You can share interests and hobbies with people that are similar to you and no longer raising a young family. It is a community ‘where you come first‘.“ Medallion Home offers 14 house plans beginning at 1524 square feet and extending to more than 3,200 square feet. They offer natural gas for cooking or heating and their homes are Energy Star-rated. “The fact that buyers can customize their home is huge for me,” says Angie, who came to Lake County in January 2012. “The selling process is much more complicated because buyers get to choose exactly what goes into their home and every 6 [ TheConnection

home can be as individual as the buyer. I believe there are no two houses that are alike in the Lakes of Mount Dora. “The location is also important to me,” Angie adds. “We are so close to everything - the beach, the parks, the Nature Trails, Mount Dora, Eustis, Tavares, Orlando and all the attractions in between.” To view an array of floor plans, along with a choice of exteriors, contact Angie Cable at Medallion Home Design Center, 8576 Lakes of Mount Dora Boulevard In Mount Dora, or call 352.702.0133.

ORAL CANCER AWARENESS By Wade Winker, D.D.S.

It was hard not to notice that October was Breast Cancer Awareness month by all the pink clothing and signs we see. Breast Cancer remains a big problem in our country and deserves all the attention it receives. I implore all women to consult with their physicians to coordinate their next mammogram. I also implore all men to consult with their physician to schedule their next PSA test to detect prostate cancer. All adults need to have a conversation with their physician about having colonoscopies to detect colon cancer. My family has been directly affected by all three of these cancers over the past few years. Oral cancer is a huge problem in the U.S. Dentists and hygienists are well trained in detecting oral cancer in all of its stages. The best way to

You’re a

screen for oral cancer is via a digital, visual, and radiographic exam by a licensed dentist utilizing a panoramic radiograph (full mouth x-ray). This can be completed comfortably at a dental prophylaxis (cleaning) appointment in about 10 minutes. As with most cancers, early detection is the key to preventing life threatening complications of oral cancer. Smoking and smokeless tobacco tremendously increase the risk of oral cancer. See your dentist at least 2 times per year and ask them about oral cancer screening if they don’t automatically offer it. Be an active part of your dental and medical care and bring those lumps, bumps, and sores to the attention of your care team. For more information, contact Dr. Winker at 15 West Atwater Avenue in Eustis or visit the website, www.wadewinker.com; or phone 352357-2564.

Lake Eustis Area Chamber of Commerce pleased to present GeorgeFest 2016 – “Proud To Be An American” By Chamber Staff

EUSTIS, Florida – 2016 marks the 114th consecutive annual celebration of GeorgeFest, the 2nd oldest festival celebrating George Washington’s Birthday in the nation and the longest running festival of any kind in Florida. Sponsored by the Lake Eustis Chamber of Commerce and our proud partner, the City of Eustis, the festival is an important piece of living, local history. The theme of this year’s festival is “Proud to be an American” and is scheduled for February 26th – 28th. HISTORY OF GEORGEFEST EVENT GeorgeFest is the longest running festival celebrating George Washington’s birthday in the state of Florida and the second longest running festival in the country second only to Laredo, TX. 2016 marks the 114th consecutive annual celebration in Eustis. No other city in Florida has as long-standing a tradition of a patriotic celebration in honor of America’s founding Father. It all began rather inconspicuously: It centered around the Ocklawaha House, the oldest hotel in the area, on which construction began in 1876. When the hotel built by A.S. Pendry, a major attraction to tourists, was enlarged between 1902 and 1907, something other than the additional east wing was added. Residents decided to show their appreciation for their visitors by hosting a holiday on Feb 22, 1902 (some dressed as early pioneers, while others as local native tribesman, to produce a pageant of the state’s early history). 10 [ TheConnection

While the format for the annual celebration, held on the day of George Washington’s birthday in 1732, changed constantly, several things remained the same. First, the festival always attracted a crowd, and not just from those staying at the hotel. People from neighboring villages and towns would make the trip into town for the festivities. From a simple parade of bicycles and Model T’s, decorated with red, white and blue bunting, and a few other units on unpaved roads, the festival has grown in size and scope. Over the years, GeorgeFest has gone from a one-day event to one that has spanned several weeks, in the recent past. Attendance has grown from the original handful of locals to thousands of eager and patriotic fun seekers. The main theme has never changed over the 114 years since its inception- simply to have fun. WHAT IS GEORGEFEST? Sponsored by the Lake Eustis Chamber of Commerce and our proud partner, the City of Eustis, the festival is an important piece of living, local history. GeorgeFest 2016 promises to be full of fun and family entertainment, as it has been for the last 113 years! Come out and take part with pride in a triumphant celebration of our heroes, America’s founding Father, George Washington, and all that America stands for.

WHY GEORGEFEST? In the late 1870s, Senator Steven Wallace Dorsey (R-Arkansas) proposed the unprecedented idea of adding “citizen” Washington’s birth date, February 22, to the four existing bank holidays previously approved in 1870. In 1879 the Forty-fifth Congress deemed George Washington’s birth date, February 22, a historic date worthy of holiday recognition. Washington was a man of his time: a farmer, and a soldier. Named commander-in-chief of the American Continental army, he led the colonies to victory over England, securing independence for an infant nation. His political leadership led to his election as president of the 1787 Constitutional Convention. Once the states ratified the Constitution, he was elected the first President of the United States, completing two terms. Everything about George Washington was entwined with the evolution of a young nation. His name was associated with virtue, honesty, strength, courage, and patriarchal leadership. Schools, bridges, towns, the national capital, and even a state were named in his honor. The federal holiday, Washington’s Birthday, honors the accomplishments of the man who has been referred to, for over two centuries, as “The Father of his Country”. Celebrated for his leadership in the founding of the nation, he was the Electoral

CountryClub The

of M ount Dora

College’s unanimous choice to become the first President; he was seen as a unifying force for the new republic and set an example for future holders of the office. The holiday also pays tribute to the general who created the first military badge of merit for the common soldier. Revived on Washington’s 200th birthday in 1932, the Purple Heart recognizes injuries received in battle. Like Memorial Day and Veterans Day, Washington’s Birthday weekend offers another opportunity to honor the country’s veterans. ACTIVITIES In the weeks leading to the festival, several activities will be offered, including: February 6, 2016 – USO Dance February 13, 2016- Running of the Georges 5k Additional schedule of events to come as some items are still in the planning stages Carnival • Parade • Fireworks • Food, and craft vendors • Button drawing • Live entertainment • Annual GeorgeFest Chamber Breakfast • Queen and King Coronation Patriotic storefront contest Please contact Christie Bobbitt at (352) 357-3434 or cbobbitt@eustischamber.org for more information.

CAREERSOURCE CENTRAL FLORIDA connects the right business with the right candidate

By Casey Johnson

As Central Florida’s premier workforce solution to businesses and career seekers, CareerSource Central Florida (CSCF) delivers tailored recruitment services throughout Sumter, Lake, Orange, Osceola, and Seminole Counties. CareerSource Central Florida’s team focuses on the needs of the individual – without the constraints of a rigid menu of services. Like a perfectly-fitting suit, their team tailors recruitment services and career pathways with one goal in mind: connecting the right business and the right candidate. In serving Central Florida’s economy, services provided to both businesses and career seekers are complimentary – from career consultations, to in-house workshops, to pre-screenings, and more. Funds for training may also be available. When a business or candidate walks through CSCF’s door,

14 [ TheConnection

the big picture determines the best course of action. What is a shining example? Horacio Carreno, a Controller at Outokumpu’s, locally-based office, found himself traveling to Alabama to find qualified candidates - until he partnered with CSCF. Instead of crossing state lines to find the right candidate, the local CSCF team built a solution tailored to his needs. With assistance from CSCF, Carreno has hired multiple candidates. Whenever he expands his team, Carreno looks to CSCF for receiving the most updated labor market and salary information. As he put it, “CareerSource Central Florida is an extension of my office.” This is only one of many success stories, tailored to the individual – not the masses. With new legislative updates, CSCF continues to build and tailor its services for CareerSource Central Florida.
