PRINTERS

LINDA AND ED HENN love the creative process

In 1845, lawyer Wendell Phillips wrote, “What gunpowder did for war, the printing press has done for the mind.” He would have enjoyed meeting Ed Henn, who has more than 35 years of experience in the printing industry. Ed and his wife, Linda, opened Henn-House Printing in Eustis eight and one half years ago. “Ed’s father was a printer, so he grew up with it,” Linda says. “Printing technology has changed immensely over the years. What used to take hours, now takes minutes on the computer.” The industry certainly has evolved since Johannes Gutenberg invented the printing press in the fifteenth century. “We offer full-color digital printing in-house,” Linda adds. “It saves the environment because no chemicals are used with a digital press.” After owning Master Craft Printers located in Western Maryland for nearly 10 years, the couple relocated to Florida to be closer to Ed’s family. Prior to that, they owned Columbine Composition located in Colorado Springs. Ed loves the creative process. “I enjoy taking an idea from scratch to the finished project,“ Ed explains. “People come in to the shop with something scribbled on a piece of paper. It goes to the design team and turns into flyers, posters, business cards, catalogs, direct-mail post cards, annual reports - even magnetic signs for vehicles.” Henn-House printed a spiral-bound cookbook for the East Lake Historical Society and the couple even printed for the stars: For five years, they designed and printed the monthly Fan Club newsletter for John Schneider from the popular TV show “Dukes of Hazzard.” 6 [ TheConnection

These days, Linda and Ed enjoy spending free time with their daughter Nina and 8-year-old granddaughter, Alivia, who live in Tavares. The company also gives back to their community, donating tickets, flyers and programs for Eustis Jazz Review (concerts performed by Eustis High School and Middle School Bands,) as well as Sweet Treats for the Arts (providing scholarships for students who cannot afford school elective fees, including art and band.) What sets Henn-House apart from other printers? “Quality at an affordable price,”Ed says simply. “We’re very good at what we do.” For more information on printing, contact Henn-House Printing, 205 North Grove Street, Eustis, 352.357.4781 or visit the website www.henn-house.com

VOLUNTARY CANCER INSURANCE MAKES A DIFFERENCE By Karen Carroll, Aflac

Voluntary cancer insurance is one of many policies available to help people cope with the high out-of-pocket costs associated with serious illnesses — costs major medical insurance were never intended to cover. In the event of a cancer diagnosis, policyholders enrolled in voluntary plans receive cash benefits that can be used as they see fit. Sometimes they’re used to help pay co-payments and deductibles. Other times, they go toward daily living expenses, such as rent, gas, groceries, babysitting and other necessities. A supplemental cancer insurance policy can also help protect income and savings from expenses that aren’t covered by major medical insurance, including experimental cancer treatments, out-of-network specialists and more. When you consider that men and women in the U.S. have a 40 percent chance of developing cancer in their lifetimes – and nearly 14 million Americans are living with cancer – voluntary cancer insurance is an option everyone should consider. However, for people who have a family history of cancer or are at higher-than-average risk, it is even more important.

DESIGN PRINT DIRECT MAIL

Furthermore, consumers who have been unable to build robust savings should seriously consider applying for voluntary cancer insurance. The treatment and recovery process can result in lost wages and other expenses that are difficult to handle. For example, some cancer drugs alone can cost $10,000 a month. Financial barriers can delay treatment and any delay can mean the difference between life and death. Families affected by cancer shouldn’t have to make the difficult decision between medical treatment and making ends meet. Voluntary cancer insurance policies can help with the treatment costs of cancer, but more importantly will also help patients focus on getting well instead of on medical and personal bills. No one wants to think about cancer, but it is necessary to consider how you would manage if you were diagnosed and unable to work. A voluntary cancer insurance policy could help make a difference to your well-being, your family and your future. To learn more about how voluntary cancer insurance plans can benefit your family, contact Karen Carroll at 352-385-7536 or karen_carroll@us.aflac.com.

DR. WADE WINKER VALUES RELATIONSHIPS Wade Winker has practiced dentistry in Eustis since 1993. “Our practice provides modern dentistry in a clean, friendly environment,” Dr. Winker says. “We have a Cerec machine that will make a crown in one visit - while you wait.” Yet even more than his state-of-the-art technology, Dr. Winker values the relationships that he builds with his patients, his staff of seven and his colleagues. “My mother worked for a dentist, who was an unbelievably charismatic man,” he recalls. “He made a tremendous impression on me and he was my dentist from age 5 to 22.” That’s probably why Dr. Winker - a music performance and biochemistry major in college - entered the profession. But he hasn’t neglected his music, either: His trombone and brass group plays in the Tri City area during the holiday season. In his spare time, Dr. Winker has made mission trips to Haiti and Kenya, where he treated 500 patients in 95-degree heat with no running water. “Those were incredibly rewarding experiences,” he says. When pressed, Dr. Winker modestly admits he was named Dentist of the Year in 2005 by the Florida Dental Association quite an honor, since there are 12,000 dentists in the state. He has served on the State of Florida Board of Dentistry since 2007.

In addition, Dr. Winker is an active member of the Kiwanis Club of the Golden Triangle. He and his wife, Lynne, a marketing officer at United Southern Bank, have enjoyed two biking trips to Ireland and “spend time spoiling our two grandchildren.” For more information, contact Dr. Wade Winker, DDS, PA, 15 West Atwater Ave., Eustis, 352-357-2564, wadewinker.com.

DISEASE – WHAT HAS INFLAMMATION GOT TO DO WITH IT? By Kathy E. Thomas

Inflammation is the life-saving component of your immune system that helps fend off bacteria, viruses, fungi, and other microbial invaders. Without inflammation we would be sitting ducks in a very hostile world, with no way to repair the damage constantly inflicted on us. Inflammation goes chronic when there is a persistent stimulus. It might start with eating foods made with processed (hydrogenated) vegetable oils – French fries, fried food, non-fat dried milk, powdered coffee creamer, most salad dressings, crackers, cookies, chips, and other processed and convenience foods. The stimulus might be an allergy to wheat (gluten) which inflames the gut, or a low-grade, lingering infection. There is a lot of opportunity in today’s contaminated, junk food-filled world for many factors to irritate the body’s normal functions. With chronic inflammation, you don’t feel sick, but a fire is quietly smoldering within you, upsetting the delicate balance among all of the major systems: endocrine, central

nervous, digestive, and cardiovascular/respiratory.Here are a few lifestyle and dietary steps to take in order to avoid inflammation: • Transition away from inflammatory foods like sugar, refined carbs (pasta, chips, crackers, cookies...), and store-bought milk. • Drink plenty of clean, fluoride-free water . • Eat plenty of fermented foods - Kombucha tea, kefir, sauerkraut, yogurt, fermented vegetables, and apple cider vinegar are all excellent examples. • Cut out the carbs and omega-6 oils, and eat saturated fats like those found in butter. • For more information on chronic inflammation, contact Kathy E. Thomas at Lake Premier Wellness Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine, 2430 South Bay Street, Eustis, 352-323-0795. For more information on chronic inflammation, contact Kathy E. Thomas at Lake Premier Wellness Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine, 2430 South Bay Street, Eustis, 352-323-0795.

THE NOT SO AUGUST MONTH By Pastor Alan Holden, Midway Baptist Church

Have you ever wondered what was so august about the month of August? The adjective “august” means “respected and impressive.” August is the month of wars, nuclear blasts, the end of summer, gearing up for school, and last minute get-a-ways - lots of activity, but not “respected and impressive.” Have you ever noticed that there is no holiday in August, except for those odd holidays like “Work Like a Dog Day,” “National Ice Cream Sandwich Day,” “Frankenstein Day,” “Left Handers’ Day” and “National Trail Mix Day”? I guess it’s up to us to make August august. The month was named “August” to honor the first Emperor of Rome. What made him so august? Three quotes from Augustus give us a clue and it will make a difference in August.

Augustus said, “I found Rome of clay; I leave it to you of marble.” We are earthly creatures, but we also have the potential to create something more magnificent like marble. This month, take one habit and transform it into something “respected and impressive.” Augustus also said: “Make haste slowly.” The point here is to be patient, but consistent. The Rome Augustus built took a long time, but it lasted 1500 years. The most respected and impressive thing you can create is a good character. How will you want to be remembered? Finally, Augustus said: “If I have played my part well, clap your hands, and dismiss me with applause from the stage.” Celebrate your victories, no matter how small. Focus on accomplishments and the fact that you are making progress. Will you join me in making August an august month of character building? What do you think? Are you in?

TAKE STOCK IN CHILDREN PROMOTES ACADEMIC SUCCESS

The mission of Take Stock in Children is to promote personal growth, self-responsibility, and academic success for financially at-risk children in Lake and Sumter Counties. The organization provides mentors, scholarships, long-term support, student advocacy, and a guaranteed educational opportunity. The local Lake Sumter TSIC program began in 1996, awarding 13 students with tuition scholarships from funds raised within the community and matched by the state. According to Program Director Gail Weidner: • 191 students are in high school • 205 students are enrolled in college • 196 students have graduated college • 16 college graduates have earned their Masters Degree • 5 college graduates have earned their PhD.

14 [ TheConnection

Take Stock in Children’s multi-year commitment to students throughout the state is also an investment in the communities in which the students live. “Three of our students are now teaching in Lake County,” says Gail Weidner. “They’re coming back to the community - which is exactly what we hope for. “We know that the education of a child is an investment in our society’s future and a way of breaking the cycle of poverty,” Weidner adds. “We want to continue to reduce the number of high school drop-outs and to increase the number of students who finish college and enter the workforce successfully.” For more information or to become a mentor, contact Take Stock in Children at 352-787-6576 or visit their website, www. takestickinchildren.org.
