PHOTOGRAPHER

BYRON FAUDIE helps preserve good

times with photographs By Renee Garrison

Byron Faudie got his first camera in 1979 and eventually turned his love of photography into a full-time career. This transition followed 12 years as a grocer and 14 years as a local banker. “It’s been wonderful to turn a skill I’ve always had into a full-time career,” says Byron, who grew up in New Smyrna Beach. He started eSportsPhoto, shooting athletes for magazines and websites, in 2004. “We don’t work all day inside a studio, in fact, many times we aren’t inside at all,” he adds. “As a full-service sports imaging company, our office is beside the field, near the docks, or around the track.” His company’s goal is to create an emotional imprint that associates the sponsor’s brand with a positive experience. Over time, Byron added other services to the business, including the very popular photo booths. “The Photobooth brings a fun experience to a variety of business and social events,” Byron explains. “Guests always have a great time in the photo booth. Then, they are treated to photo strips that print quickly, look great, and are durable enough to survive guests’ purses and pockets throughout the event.” Byron discovered that joining the Chamber of Commerce has provided an incredible boost to his business. “The Chamber of Commerce sees the value in having a photo experience as part of an event,” Byron says. “Joining the Chamber has helped me network and get in front of people. I draw a lot of customers just from being a member. Now, people call me to help create buzz for their events through social media sharing, onsite photo printing and more.” 6 [ TheConnection

He doesn’t often shoot product or catalog pictures, preferring to concentrate on “sports, parties and fun photos. I help people remember the good times. We‘re out there, celebrating.” When he’s not behind the lens, Byron enjoys traveling “to peaceful locations” where he can snorkel and relax. For more information, contact Byron Faudie at 407-3762086 or visit his website at www.esportsphoto.net.

KENNEL COUGH? By Dr. Tracie Wilson, DVM

“But we haven’t even been near a kennel!” Veterinarians in Lake County hear this nearly every day. In fact, dog owners need to be aware that Infectious Tracheobronchitis (Kennel Cough) is a highly contagious and frustrating respiratory disorder. Exposure: The bug (Viral +/- bacteria) is aerosolized into the secretions from the coughing or sneezing pet – so it can be spread by direct contact…or left behind to be found on a water bowl, food bowl, toy, cage door, etc. It can be carried from one pet to another by the handler. There is a plethora of ways to be exposed, including the asymptomatic carrier. The incubation period is from 3 – 10 days and a lot of pets are going a lot of places! Diagnosis: Okay, the diagnosis is a dead giveaway when the owner reports “We just got home from vacation and picked her up at the kennel.” If that is not the history, then finding the exposure point can be challenging. The diagnosis is based on the clinical signs (primarily coughing and gagging) and findings during exam. Lab work and radiology can sometimes be utilized to evaluate severe cases. Treatment: As with people, sometimes these things must

run their course, which is NOT what an owner who has been up for three nights with a coughing dog wants to hear! These pets usually are put on an antibiotic to prevent this disease from moving to the bronchi and lungs. Usually this is a selflimiting cough, but it can become deadly serious if it moves to the deeper airways. Some of the cough suppressants from the human shelf can be used to provide relief – be sure to talk to your veterinarian about which ones are safe! Occasionally, bronchodilators or antihistamines are prescribed in addition to antibiotics. Again, treatment plans are made on an individual basis – one treatment does not necessarily work for every dog. Prevention: Vaccination and avoidance are both effective preventive measures. While the vaccination helps to prevent the bacterial infection, no immune system is perfect! Ideally, if a vaccinated pet is exposed, the pet will be resistant to the bacteria and not become sick. . There are several vaccines available, so your vet will choose based on your particular situation. For more information, contact Animal Medical Center at 901 North Grove Street, Eustis, 352-589-1108 or visit the website www.amceustis.com.

Lake Eustis Area Chamber of Commerce pleased to present GeorgeFest 2016 – “Proud To Be An American” EUSTIS, Florida – 2016 marks the 114th consecutive annual celebration of GeorgeFest, the 2nd oldest festival celebrating George Washington’s Birthday in the nation and the longest running festival of any kind in Florida. Sponsored by the Lake Eustis Chamber of Commerce and our proud partner, the City of Eustis, the festival is an important piece of living, local history. The theme of this year’s festival is “Proud to be an American” and is scheduled for February 26th – 28th. History of GeorgeFest Event: GeorgeFest is the longest running festival celebrating George Washington’s birthday in the state of Florida and the second longest running festival in the country second only to Laredo, TX. 2016 marks the 114th consecutive annual celebration in Eustis. No other city in Florida has as long-standing a tradition of a patriotic celebration in honor of America’s founding Father. It all began rather inconspicuously: It centered around the Ocklawaha House, the oldest hotel in the area, on which construction began in 1876. When the hotel built by A.S. Pendry, a major attraction to tourists, was enlarged between 1902 and 1907, something other than the additional east wing was added. Residents decided to show their appreciation for their visitors by hosting a holiday on Feb 22, 1902 (some dressed as early pioneers, while others as local native tribesman, to produce a pageant of the state’s early history). While the format for the annual celebration, held on the day of George Washington’s birthday in 1732, changed constantly, several things remained the same. First, the festival always attracted a crowd, and not just from those staying at the hotel. People from neighboring villages and towns would make the trip into town for the festivities. From a simple parade of bicycles and Model T’s, decorated with red, white and blue bunting, and a few other units on unpaved roads, the festival has grown in size and scope. Over the years, GeorgeFest has gone from a one-day event to one that has spanned several weeks, in the recent past. Attendance has grown from the original handful of locals to thousands of eager and patriotic fun seekers. The main theme has never changed over the 114 years since its inception- simply to have fun. What is GeorgeFest? Sponsored by the Lake Eustis Chamber of Commerce and our proud partner, the City of Eustis, the festival is

an important piece of living, local history. GeorgeFest 2016 promises to be full of fun and family entertainment, as it has been for the last 113 years! Come out and take part with pride in a triumphant celebration of our heroes, America’s founding Father, George Washington, and all that America stands for. Why GeorgeFest? In the late 1870s, Senator Steven Wallace Dorsey (R-Arkansas) proposed the unprecedented idea of adding “citizen” Washington’s birth date, February 22, to the four existing bank holidays previously approved in 1870. In 1879 the Forty-fifth Congress deemed George Washington’s birth date, February 22, a historic date worthy of holiday recognition. Washington was a man of his time: a farmer, and a soldier. Named commander-in-chief of the American Continental army, he led the colonies to victory over England, securing independence for an infant nation. His political leadership led to his election as president of the 1787 Constitutional Convention. Once the states ratified the Constitution, he was elected the first President of the United States, completing two terms. Everything about George Washington was entwined with the evolution of a young nation. His name was associated with virtue, honesty, strength, courage, and patriarchal leadership. Schools, bridges, towns, the national capital, and even a state were named in his honor. The federal holiday, Washington’s Birthday, honors the accomplishments of the man who has been referred to, for over two centuries, as “The Father of his Country”. Celebrated for his leadership in the founding of the nation, he was the Electoral College’s unanimous choice to become the first President; he was seen as a unifying force for the new republic and set an example for future holders of the office. The holiday also pays tribute to the general who created the first military badge of merit for the common soldier. Revived on Washington’s 200th birthday in 1932, the Purple Heart recognizes injuries received in battle. Like Memorial Day and Veterans Day, Washington’s Birthday weekend offers another opportunity to honor the country’s veterans. Activities: In the weeks leading to the festival, several activities will be offered, including: • February 6, 2016 – USO Dance • February 20, 2016- Running of the Georges 5k Additional schedule of events to come as some items are still in the planning stages. • Carnival • Parade • Fireworks • Food, and craft vendors • Live entertainment • Annual GeorgeFest Chamber Breakfast • Queen and King Coronation • Patriotic storefront contest • Button drawing Please contact Christie Bobbitt at (352) 357-3434 or cbobbitt@ eustischamber.org for more information.

CREATION HEALTH CENTER TEACHES HOW TO KEEP YOUR IMMUNE SYSTEM HEALTHY By Candace Huber, R.N.

Maintaining a healthy immune system is critical for living a life free of disease. As you get older, it is even more important that you consider your immune system. Current studies find a link between an aging immune system to higher rates of infection, inflammatory diseases and even cancer. Here are three tips to help you fight back! Eat a diet rich with fruits, vegetables and whole grains. Generally, the recommended amount of vegetables is 2 ½ - 3 cups per day, and fruits are 1 ½ - 2 cups per day. Boost your immune system by fulfilling your daily dose with vitamins A, B6, C and E. Opt for a kale salad instead of one made with iceberg lettuce to power up on of vitamins A and B6, and snack on fruits and dark leafy greens like Swiss chard to fill up on vitamins C and E. Cut back on the saturated fats. Although vitamins B12 and D have shown to have the same benefits on the immune system as the aforementioned vitamins, you need to be careful where you are getting them. Remember that saturated

fats are solid at room temperature, so begin replacing those with healthy fats such as olive oil or oily fish (tuna and salmon), flaxseeds and walnuts. Try skipping cheese and enjoy a low-fat yogurt instead, or swap out a glass of milk for a handful of almonds. Go for a walk. Set a daily goal of 30 minutes of moderate exercise. Grab a friend and catch up after work with a walk around the neighborhood. You should be able to walk at a moderate brisk pace, needing to take a breath every 3-4 words, but still be able to carry on a conversation. During moderate exercise immune cells circulate through the body more quickly and are better able to kill bacteria and viruses, but after exercise ends, the immune system returns to normal. The Conry CREATION Health Center at Florida Hospital Waterman offers classes to help you begin and sustain a healthier lifestyle. To register and for more information, visit ConryCREATIONHealth.com.

PATRIOT’S DAY OR PRAYER DAY By Pastor Alan Holden, Midway Baptist Church

September 11, 2001 was a day that terrified and angered us. For hours we stumbled around in a daze. When reality finally set in, we were outraged, first at the terrorists and then at God. Why would God allow such a thing? Instead, we should answer the question that God put to us: “On September 11th, did you pray as your Lord prayed: ‘Deliver us from evil’?” (Matthew 6:13). I have to confess that I did not pray that morning. I was late for work. I thought, “Surely, God will understand if I postponed my prayers!” A few hours later, I was alerted that many people were sent to their eternal destiny without a second chance. Many lost

their eternal bliss because we were too busy. I immediately cried out: “Oh, God!” It was the only prayer that came to mind. Even those who repudiate God prayed the same prayer. I watched members of Congress stand on the Capitol steps and sing: “God Bless America.” Yet in many of our schools, children are told to leave God at the door, along with their knives and guns. Still, people wonder why God allowed this act to happen. Did anyone stop to think that this was God’s wake-up call to us? God may not need us, but we certainly need Him. We need to repent of only turning to God as a last resort. Only by God’s grace did He deliver us from evil that day without us asking Him. The next time, God may not.

CORNERSTONE HOSPICE Concentrates on Patients and their Families

Cornerstone Hospice and Palliative Care is a community-based, notfor-profit provider of end-of-life and palliative care support services for people with a life-limiting illness. At Cornerstone Hospice, the staff and volunteers concentrate on meeting the physical, social, emotional and spiritual needs of patients and their caregivers. Hospice care allows many patients to remain comfortable in their own environment, surrounded by friends and family where they are free of pain. Loved ones share in patient care under the guidance of the Hospice team of professionals, ensuring a fulfilling alternative to institutional health care. Studies show that individuals in hospice care often live longer and have a more relaxed and fulfilling end-of-life experience than those who are not in hospice. “In addition, we provide free bereavement support to adults and children in the community, even if their loved one was not in our care,” says Cheryl Rumbley, Community Relations Coordinator. Donations from the community can support patient’s last wishes, emergency financial needs of patients for necessities of daily life, children’s programs, hospice services for those who are underinsured

or uninsured and special programs such as Pet Peace of Mind which keeps patient’s pets with them longer and Cornerstone SALUTES! which honors veterans. Cornerstone Hospice and Palliative Care was founded in 1984 to serve patients and families seeking quality and dignity in their lives, while coping with an end-of-life illness. They currently serve Lake, Sumter, Orange, Osceola, Polk, Hardee and Highlands counties in Central Florida, are licensed by the State of Florida and certified by Medicare and Medicaid. “I have people come up to me all the time and tell me what a blessing our staff members were to their family,” Cheryl adds. “We are honored to have the opportunity to provide compassionate support and resources to our patients and their families at such a delicate time in their journey.” For more information, contact Cornerstone Hospice, 2445 Lane Park Road, 352-343-1341, or visit their website at www. cornerstonehospice.org.
