Elected to the Board of County Commissioners in 2008, Commissioner Fred Hawkins, Jr. is a long-time resident of Osceola County. He was selected by his peers as Chairman for 2010. Commissioner Hawkins represents District 5, a mostly rural area ripe for growth and development that extends east to neighboring Brevard County and south to Indian River County. Within District 5 are the city of St. Cloud and the development of Harmony, a thriving new residential community that promotes a balance of humans, nature and pets. Commissioner Hawkins graduated from the University of Akron with degrees in Pre-Law and Political Science, and is the Director of Business Development and Legal Affairs for Waste Corporation of America.
Q: What is your biggest priority as Commissioner for District 5? A: My biggest priority is to advance Osceola County into it's future. For me, the old Narcoossee schoolhouse is a reminder of our past. It reminds me of where where Osceola County has been and where it's going. In the past year, we've broken ground on the Florida Advanced Manufacturing Research Center and the Ram National Circuit Finals Rodeo. We also achieved our number one job, without raising taxes, which is improving public safety. We will break ground on a new training facility for the Sheriff 's department which also has the opportunity to train our firefighters.
Q: What is important about Osceola County today? A: Osceola County is one of the fastest-growing counties in the country and with growth comes change. Where there was once an orange grove, there are now future developments and homes for residents. With this growth comes challenges and responsibilities for transportation, new roads and protecting our acquifer. Our relationship to Downtown Orlando and Medical City has changed the atmosphere for everything that happens here. We welcome new residents to Osceola County but we have also taken measures to protect the existing residents and infrastructure of our county. Ordinances have been passed to protect agriculture and grow tourism which are two of our main catalysts for economic development.
