THE ANNUAL WELLNESS EXAM

| By Dr. Gary A. Borgman |

In

recent articles in the Osceola Woman I have written about choosing a pet, puppy and kitten nutrition, and disease prevention for puppies and kittens. Now, I will shift the discussion to the Annual Physical Examination visit. This is when we get to see how they “turn out” at 12-16 months of age. At this time, we get to perform a thorough physical examination, check for internal and external parasites, review diet and behavior issues, and update vaccinations as needed, for continued protection against contagious diseases.

Maintaining ongoing immunity to diseases is very important, but I consider the pet owners observations and concerns a vital part of the annual visit. I encourage owners to write things down, keep a written record of pet issues or maybe just write it on a calendar or smart phone. I love pictures of behaviors, skin issues, and maybe a picture of the current food container. After listening to and reviewing owner input I like to go to the actual physical examination process. This will take several minutes and I like to comment upon my findings as they occur. We utilize a 24 point “check list” for annual examinations. Some very important observations of the head include the nose, eyes, ears, and of course the teeth, gums, and the color of mucous membranes. We will assign a dental health score of 0 to 4, and we will assign a body condition score of 1-9, where 5 is ideal and 6 is the beginning of concern to adjust the caloric intake. Next comes out the stethoscope to assess the heart and lungs. Palpation of the abdomen is important and checking lymph nodes is part of the process. I will not elaborate on anal sacs or lameness evaluations, but these are part of the process. I will elaborate however a bit about the skin.

Itching, dandruff, hair loss, and skin infections are very common and will be evaluated at the annual physical examination. Common conditions we encounter include flea allergy dermatitis, atopic dermatitis, and secondary bacterial and yeast infections. Mange is usually a disease of young dogs but can occur at any age, so we always keep that in mind. There are several “core vaccines” for dogs and cats which all pets should receive, and there are additional vaccines which are administered after a review of risk factors for individual animals. Rabies vaccine, usually first given at 4 months of age, must be boosted in one year at 16 months of age and is then good for three years for dogs and one year for cats. Our vaccine protocol for dogs is to boost Distemper-Adeno-Parvo every three years, Lepto every year, and Bordetella every year, on a need basis. This means that an indoor dog who never goes to the groomer, dog parks, or a kennel is at low risk for kennel cough and the Bordatella vaccine is optional. We vaccinate some dogs traveling out of the state for Lyme disease, and of course encourage effective tick THERE ARE SEVERAL “CORE infestation prevention products. Cats will be boosted for Panluekopenia and VACCINES” FOR DOGS AND upper respiratory viruses at the first annual visit and we will discuss the CATS WHICH ALL PETS advisability of continuing with Feline Leukemia Virus vaccine, depending SHOULD RECEIVE. upon individual risk factors. This visit is also the time to review external and internal parasite control products. There are many effective products available to prevent heartworms, intestinal parasites, and fleas and ticks. Unfortunately there are some over the counter products which are not very effective. More about these issues in a future article. The blood test for canine heartworm disease will include an age appropriate mini health profile to evaluate blood glucose and liver and kidney health. As animals age, we will be doing more tests for total health evaluation.

The veterinarians and staff at Kissimmee Animal Hospital (407-846-3912) and Poinciana Pet Clinic (407-518-0880) are available to answer any questions you may have about recommended vaccinations or any other pet health issues. We are here to help and to serve.

DON’T KEEP FAMILY IN THE DARK ABOUT YOUR PLANS

You

might work diligently at building a financial roadmap for your retirement years and a comprehensive estate plan. But you can’t just create these strategies – you also have to communicate them. Specifically, you need to inform your spouse and your grown children what you have in mind for the future – because the more they know, the fewer surprises that await them, down the road.

LET’S START WITH YOUR SPOUSE. You and your spouse should have already communicated about your respective ideas for retirement, and have come to an agreement on the big issues, such as when you both plan to retire, where you’ll live during retirement, and what you want to do as retirees.

But what you both might have let slip through the cracks are the important specifics related to financing your retirement. You’ll need to answer several questions, including: • WHEN WILL YOU EACH START TAKING SOCIAL SECURITY? • ARE THERE STRATEGIES FOR MAXIMIZING BOTH OF YOUR SOCIAL SECURITY PAYMENTS? • WHEN WILL YOU NEED TO START TAPPING INTO YOUR RESPECTIVE RETIREMENT ACCOUNTS, SUCH AS YOUR IRA AND 401(K)? AND, ONCE YOU DO START, HOW MUCH SHOULD YOU TAKE OUT, EACH YEAR? You may want to work with a financial professional to address these issues, but however you proceed, you and your spouse need to be “on the same page” regarding the key financial components of your retirement.

NOW, CONSIDER YOUR GROWN CHILDREN. You need to

clearly communicate your estate plans to them, not only for the sake of openness and honesty, but also because they may well play active roles within those plans. So when talking to your children, make sure to cover:

Durable power of attorney – You may well decide to give one of your grown children the durable power of attorney, to pay bills and make financial choices on your behalf if you are unable to do so. Estate executor – An executor is the person or entity you name in your will to carry out your wishes. An executor has a variety of responsibilities, so you’ll want to choose someone who is honest and capable of dealing with legal and financial matters. Again, you could ask a grown child to serve as your executor, but, to avoid potential conflict of interests among your children, you might want to go outside the family. Talk with an attorney about how best to name your executor. Assuming you have already drawn up a will, share it with your grown children. The same is true with a living trust, a popular estateplanning tool that may allow your survivors to avoid going through the time-consuming, public, and expensive process of probate. A will and a living trust will obviously contain a great deal of information your children should know about – so take the time to explain your thinking when you created these documents. You want to enjoy a comfortable retirement, and you want to leave a meaningful legacy through your estate plans. To help accomplish both these goals, you need to include your loved ones in your arrangements – so open those lines of communication. Edward Jones, its employees, and financial advisors are not estate planners and cannot provide tax or legal advice. You should consult your estate-planning attorney or qualified tax advisor regarding your situation.

This article was written by Edward Jones for use by your local Edward Jones Financial Advisor. For more information on investing your money please contact Cleve Grissom at 407-891-7833.

Make

thisr yea Let’s face it, many times, it’s the parents who are the only ones ready for that special time of year – back to school time! After months of “freedom” waking those groggy eyed kids, every morning, is a challenge; excite them with some of these back-to-school ideas, which will make your life easier, too.

12 osceolawoman.com | JUL /AUG 2016

AfterSchool Snacks Nothing makes a mom happier than seeing her kid munch on, and love, some healthy snacks! We all know it’s easier to pop some frozen goodies in the microwave, but with some thinking ahead and meal-prep, you can have them ready before the school week even starts!

Popcorn bags – Ditch the microwave version, and bring

out your large skillet for popping! Throw in some dried fruit, nuts, or even little dark-chocolate candies, and it’s sure to be a hit! Once they are cool, portion them out into snack-size baggies for easy after-school snack grabbing.

Build your own creations – Dedicate one area in your

fridge to some after-school goodies. Here, put an array of sliced veggies (think tomatoes, lettuce, red peppers), lunch meats (with no nitrates), and cheese – the kids can go crazy building their own sandwich-stack creations, with or without bread!

Fruit kabobs, anyone? – This one’s a fun one! Get

out some kabob sticks and adorn them with various pieces of fresh fruit. This one is great cause you can add what they like, and keep out what they don’t! For a fun twist, add a few marshmallows, to ensure they’ll grab these after school.

Quench their thirst – It’s easy for kids to grab sugary drinks; however, infused water can do they trick, too!

In a pitcher of water, add some oranges or strawberries – lemon or lime – whatever floats your boat, and theirs. Grab some silly straws to make it even more fun!

Lunches to Wow! We’ve covered their after-school hunger issues; but, those midday growth spurts need their nourishment, as well. Luckily for moms (and dads) the Bento Box is a trend that we can all agree makes the school lunch a lot more fun!

Bento to go –

The idea of the Bento Box is to eliminate the need for plastic bags. The box is divided into several compartments, making packing and presentation a breeze. The ways to get creative are endless, but here are a few to help start off your year!

Back to School Safety

It seems like parents number one job is to worry. Let’s send them off into the world, prepared, with these safety tips:

Backpack Safety – It’s important to make sure that

their load isn’t overloading them! A good backpack is never wider or longer than your child’s torso and never hanging more than 4 inches below the waist, had padded shoulder

Combination 1 – Lunch meat roll ups

(non-nitrate meat, cheese, and lettuce, no bread), cucumber slices, whole strawberries, and blueberries.

Combination 2 – Two or three hard boiled eggs, a whole wheat wrap with your meat and cheese of choice, blueberries, and cucumber slices.

Combination 3 – Carrot sticks,

celery sticks, cherry tomatoes, hummus, pita bread and salami.

Combination 4 – Cubed

grilled chicken, snap peas, mandarin orange, black beans, and whole wheat pasta.

Combination 5 – Sliced apples and cinnamon, broccoli and ranch dip, peanut butter and jelly sandwich, and popcorn.

Homework 9-11!

It’s been some time since us parents have had to crack a book, which makes homework time a bit stressful on a nightly basis. Lucky for us, we live in a time when help is just a click away. Check out these sites, for some homework 9-11: www.GoNerdify.com www.AssignmentLab.com www.AceHomeworkHelp.com

Bring back the safe word! W

e all remember th at word when we were kid s. Today, with texting and social media, we can brin g the word to the virtual world. If your kids find th emselves in a dangerous situ ation, let them know to text you a word that has sp ecial meaning of danger , to just you. Many phones w ill have tracking devices, w hich will be a great fir st step to finding them if they are even in danger.

straps, hip and chest belts, several compartments to help even weight, and a reflective material, especially if your child walks home from school. Also, although embroidering their names on their backpacks are cute, it allows dangerous strangers to call them out by name or learn their identity easier.

Safe bus rides – Teach your kids bus safety, with these

helpful tips. When waiting for the bus, make sure they have a dedicated, easily seen area, every day. Teach them that it is important to wait far-back off the road, and to not run or horse around near the street. Although the driver should be keeping them in-check while on the ride, you should let them know that it is good to be respectful of the driver by always sitting, being quiet, and keeping the aisles clear. It’s never good to distract a driver! Most important, if your child has to cross the street to board or un-board, if you can meet them at the stop, make sure all traffic is clear or walk with them. If you’re unable to do this, make sure the driver is watching the traffic and giving your kids a clear to cross, before they start. They should always walk at least 10-feet in front of the bus, and stay away from the buses wheels.

Making bedtime a breeze

Bullying stope here – With the social media

With distractions all around, bedtime seems to becoming harder and harder, each year! Luckily, living in Florida we have one thing on our side – the sunshine! Set a timer, for at least 30 minutes, every day after school and get the kids outside. If you can, join them in the fun, and take a family walk, swim – or even basketball game. Soak up that Vitamin D, and make some fun family memories, while at it.

bullying trend, it’s important to talk to your kids, before others do. Let them know it’s never okay to allow bullying to happen. If they are an object to this horrible behavior, let them know it is okay to speak up! Also, teach them that if they see it going on with a friend or school mate, that it’s important to let that be known, as well.

Family safe list – Having a family sit down to make

house rules, is a great way to start the school year off safe! Establish a list for scenarios which your kids will find themselves in. For example, if you child has to walk or ride their bike to school, let them know they always have to use the sidewalk, or wear a helmet. If they attend after-school programs, make a list of appropriate behavior.

A DAY SPECIFICALLY FOR

T

you!

WHAT IT DOES FOR YOU

reat, pamper and indulge yourself in fun activities featuring exciting events like med spa treatments, a fashion show featuring a little “something extra” (hint: they’re hunks!), a cooking demonstration, and so much more!

The HEAD 2 TOE SHOW gives women the opportunity to enjoy, learn and have fun! With our lead sponsor Osceola Regional Medical Center, we are extending the opportunity to you to participate with interactive booths; get a massage, a makeover, buy a new outfit, while experiencing all kinds of local businesses. A true women’s day out, all in one location! This is the perfect opportunity to take advantage of special show specials/ discounts and you won’t leave empty handed because you will receive free goodies from different businesses!

HOW IT ALL STARTED

Kena Blain had a vision to bring businesses and women together, and provide a fun environment to just let loose, so in 2012, Osceola Woman’s first HEAD 2 TOE event premiered at Osceola Heritage Park Exhibition Hall in Kissimmee, with 100 businesses participating. Since then, the event has expanded to as many as 140 vendors from the Central Florida area, and it is still as exciting as ever! Many women make this event an annual tradition to spend time with their mothers, daughters or girlfriends and enjoy all the day has to offer.

OUR MISSION

Our goal is for women to walk away a little wiser, refreshed and perhaps a little healthier, having learned a great deal about their health and wellness. Who doesn’t like to receive a great promotional offer or better yet a massage? An event like this takes a team of dedicated professionals and elite sponsors to make it all come together. We are grateful for the tremendous amount of support we continue to receive each year. We have lots of surprises for this year’s show and plenty of chances to win exciting prizes. We hope to see you there for this fantastic opportunity!

WHAT IT DOES FOR THE COMMUNITY

Each year we chose to partner with an incredible non-profit organization that gives back directly to the Osceola county community. This year we would proudly like to announce that Christmas for the Kids Osceola is our chosen charity and will receive all proceeds made at the door. This great organization provides toys and gift cards for homeless school age children in Osceola County during each Christmas season, a noble cause indeed.

John M. Overstreet is running for the office of Clerk of the Circuit Court. During his 35-year career with the Osceola County Clerk’s office, he has had the opportunity to work with four different Clerks. He has experience in every department within the Clerk’s office. He has served as the administrator and director in the Circuit, County, and recording departments, and he established the information technology division. This has allowed him to gain insight into every aspect of the office, including finance, and the yearly budgeting process. Serving in these positions has given him the opportunity to develop relationships with other executives throughout the local judicial system, County government, and other Clerk’s Offices, as well as many contacts in the state capital. This experience will prove extremely valuable to the citizens of Osceola County. His college degree is customized specifically for leadership of the Clerk’s Office. Having experienced many styles of leadership, he knows what works well and what does not. His knowledge and experience will help to restore self-respect, and pride, in the service the clerk employees provide. He is the most qualified to serve as the Osceola County Clerk, and will make the office a more positive experience for the public. The Osceola Clerk of the Court needs to improve in many areas, but three points of emphasis stand out. First and foremost, it must enhance customer service. John’s goal is to help citizens by continually improving technology, minimizing inconvenience to themselves, and hopefully avoiding needless or repeat trips to the courthouse. When a citizen is required to come to the office, John will ensure that they can conduct their business quickly and without hassle. Second, fiscal responsibility must be

restored. John will guard your taxpayer dollars by instituting financial controls to reduce waste and inefficiency. Rules will be reinstituted and followed. Finally, John wants to restore the public’s confidence in the Office of the Clerk. He has dedicated his life to our local judicial system and is committed to bringing it back to the place of respect it deserves. He is a lifelong resident of Osceola County and a product of the Osceola County school system. He graduated from the University of Central Florida with a Bachelor’s Degree in Interdisciplinary Studies. While attending grade school, he also earned the rank of Eagle Scout, the highest attainable rank in Boy Scouts. He and his wife of 37 years have been blessed with two daughters, a son-in-law, and two grandchildren. He has served on the Board of Trustees and Finance Committee for the First United Methodist Church of Kissimmee. He is a 35-year member of the Silver Spurs Riding Club. He has also served on various committees within the county and community, whether as a member or advisor.

His overwhelming experience, strong business relationships, and commitment to Osceola County make him the most qualified candidate to be your next Clerk of the Circuit Court.

Since being elected to the Kissimmee City Commission in 2012, small-business owner and community participant Jose Alvarez has been a strong proponent of economic development initiatives. Among other projects, he has supported Lakefront and Downtown revitalization efforts, the new Medical Arts District, and the modernization of Kissimmee’s municipal airport. “There’s no good reason that the closest airport to the most popular attractions and convention center in the world, can’t generate at least as many jobs and as much revenue as other municipal airports in Florida. This is but one example of where we’re not fully capitalizing on our fantastic resources” Alvarez said. Commissioner Alvarez also has an eye toward the future and is committed to capitalizing on the County’s efforts to make Osceola a hub for technology research and development. This and other factors has earned him endorsements from 4 County Commissioners as well as other elected, and business leaders. In addition to his efforts to grow Kissimmee’s economy, Commissioner Alvarez is the City’s leading advocate on homelessness efforts. He represents Kissimmee on the Central Florida Commission on Homelessness, has met with, and continues to learn from other officials that have made great strides in different parts of the country, and he dedicates much of his personal time to this fight. This year he was listed among Rethink Homelessness’s “Central Florida 40”. Jose takes great pride in working with, and for, the community. Over the past 3 years, he has met with more residents and business owners than any other member of the

2016

City Commission. And as a positive consequence of this open door policy, he’s recorded more passed motions as well. From introducing the City’s first Homebuyer Down Payment Assistance program to rolling back-business inhibiting ordinances and helping new startups open and grow, Commissioner Alvarez has stayed very busy for the residents of Kissimmee. He also takes pride in the fact that the City has an A+ credit rating and works efficiently, and hasn’t raised the mileage rate on taxpayers during his time in office. He believes that fiscal responsibility is paramount to ensuring a bright future for Kissimmee and consistently advocates for a balanced approach when it comes to spending taxpayer dollars. In addition to his role at City Hall, Jose serves on the Board of Directors for the Osceola Education Foundation, Help Now Osceola, Transition House, Osceola Arts, and the Hispanic Business Council. He also serves on the Transportation Committee for the National League of Cities, is the current Chair of the Transportation and Intergovernmental Relations Committee for the Florida League of Cities, and is an Alternate on Metro Plan Orlando’s Board of Directors. Additionally, Jose’s passion for expanding homeownership and preserving property rights has led him to serve on various executive committees within the Florida Association of Realtors. And in 2009 he served as President of the Osceola County Association of Realtors, where he still participates in community and industry improving efforts. Commissioner Alvarez is a married father of 5 daughters and 20-year resident of Osceola County. He volunteers with several local non-profits and has served this community in one capacity or another for many of those years.

Osceola County native Brandon Arrington

was elected to the County Commission in 2008, and is seeking your support for reelection. “It has been a

great honor to represent Osceola County these last eight years. We, as a commission, have made some great strides, but there is still a lot of work to be done” stated Brandon. While serving as a Commissioner, the county has created the Florida Tech Farm with UCF, broke ground on a new Valencia Campus on Pleasant Hill, invested approximately $300 million in new road projects, and improvements such as resurfacing Pleasant Hill, construction of John Young Flyover, and the Osceola Parkway widening, also the construction of Poinciana Parkway. The county also negotiated a new contract with our trash haulers, to make curbside recycling a reality for Osceola while reducing the cost to residents. Also, to meet the current and future needs of residents, Brandon has diligently worked to move forward the construction of Sunrail - a 61-mile commuter train in central Florida, the construction of a permanent health clinic to serve district 3, the widening of Poinciana Boulevard, and increased Lynx service to allow residents better access to and from their homes. These past eight years for Osceola County has placed a premium on operating effectively. By creating efficiencies such as Paperless Permitting, Osceola has been able to reduce cost and time for applicants and the county. Osceola County operates today with less employees than we had in 2005. Saving on operating costs has allowed Osceola to keep property taxes stable, while making much needed improvements to our infrastructure. Brandon helped lobby for the creation of Osceola’s Expressway Authority, which led to the construction of Poinciana Parkway. This new way out of

Poinciana will be the first leg in connecting I-4 to the turnpike through Poinciana. This has been a top priority and one that Brandon hopes to champion over the next four years. Serving on the Public Safety Coordinating Council, Brandon understands the issues our first responders and court system face. That is why he has supported the creation of a new training facility for the sheriff. Osceola has also invested in a Central Receiving Facility, to allow for intake of those having addiction or mental health issues. This facility will allow for treatment as opposed to being incarcerated. Osceola has also begun the construction of a new fire station on Pleasant Hill Road, which will serve as the model for future stations. He is a graduate of Osceola High School, where he met his wife Kristen, and he is also a graduate of Auburn University, “War Eagle”. Personal improvement is very important to Brandon, so other education and enrichment endeavors include Leadership Osceola, Political Leadership Institute, Certified County Commission Training, Advanced Commissioner Training, and MPO training. Outside of serving his community he enjoys spending his free time outdoors. He is a member of the Rotary Club of Poinciana and a mentor for Take Stock in Children. He also served as the past chair for Alzheimer’s Walk in Kissimmee and helped fundraise for Cystic Fibrosis, Relay for Life, The Osceola Council on Aging, the YMCA, and is a proud participant in Read Across America. Brandon also works as the Executive Director for Osceola Arts, our local art agency.

No Osceola County resident needs to look very far into recent news accounts to know that these are challenging times. Keeping communities safe, being sensitive to the needs of citizens of all backgrounds, operating with transparency, and practicing good stewardship of both public funds and public trust must be the guiding principles for anyone running for public office, most particularly in the law-enforcement community. In the campaign for Osceola Sheriff, candidate Dave Sklarek, most recently the Osceola County Sheriff ’s Office Chief Deputy, embodies these principles in ways seldom seen in such abundance. Reflecting a lifetime of public service, Sklarek’s credentials are impressive. He is a United States Marine, has decades of successful police work for Osceola County, a graduate of the prestigious FBI National Academy, a Master’s degree in Criminal Justice Law Enforcement Administration, and a graduate of the Florida Department of Law Enforcement’s Chief Executive Seminar. These, and other accolades, are what Dave Sklarek brings to the table, as he campaigns to earn your trust – and your vote – for Sheriff of Osceola County. While pondering your vote, other factors describing the true measure of the man should be evaluated. Consider this: Dave Sklarek has received the endorsement of incumbent Sheriff, Bob Hansell. He has also earned the coveted endorsement of many of central Florida’s Sheriffs. These endorsements are not given casually, as they reflect upon the professional reputation of those who bestow them. Also, consider these additional assets: Sklarek is a graduate of Leadership Osceola, and he is the Volunteer Director for the Law Enforcement Torch Run for Special Olympics Florida, which raises awareness, and millions of dollars nationwide, in support of Special Olympics. He also is the former Chairman of Osceola County’s Substance Abuse Policy Advisory Board, and board member of Public Safety Coordinating Council, he also currently is a sitting board member for Community Vision. These positions, and others, are not mandated. Instead, they reflect a love of community, and a concern for public welfare, which transcends merely being on the public payroll.

Other areas for consideration are his proven performance. Sklarek has risen through the ranks of the Sheriff ’s Office, being appointed by Sheriff Bob Hansell in 2005 as the Chief Deputy, second in command. He has successfully managed a budget of over 65 million dollars, and directed, on behalf of the incumbent, all aspects of the Office from enforcement, administration, human resources, and internal affairs. He is a state-certified firearms, defensive tactics, and general subject’s instructor, specializing in high risk tactical training and officer stress, survival, and leadership. He is a certified practitioner of personal fitness and nutrition, a former team commander and instructor of the SWAT team, a court recognized expert in use of force practice and policy, and more. That he is superbly prepared to take up the mantle of Sheriff from day one is an understatement. And finally, consider the man. Married father of four sons, member and Sundayschool teacher in his church, youth sports coach, and mentor. How many of those who run for office can offer such depth and breadth of life experience and proven record of excellence in public service? Dave Sklarek hopes to continue his legacy of service to the county he loves.

As we all face the uncertainties and challenges of the future, he asks for your favorable consideration and trust by granting him the honor of being elected as your Sheriff for Osceola County.

CHECK THE SCORE - ON KIDS

AND SPORTS-RELATED INJURIES The

most common sports injuries include muscle sprains and strains, tendon injuries, dislocations, fractures, broken bones, and spine injuries.

WHAT TO DO WHEN YOUR YOUNG JOCK TAKES A HARD KNOCK

You’re in the stands cheering. There’s a whistle – and it’s your son or daughter on the ground, or court, surrounded by concerned-looking coaches and teammates. You start breathing again when you see your child stand up, wave to you, and seemingly take the blow in stride. No broken bones. No sign of limping. It doesn’t look like it was a serious knock… this time. But you’re worried, aren’t you? Each year, approximately 46.6 million U.S. children play a team sport, and sports-related injuries send an estimated 12 million young athletes, between the ages of 5 and 22, to the emergency room. The largest number, 37 percent, are from ages 13 to 15.

ORTHOPEDIC AND SPINE INJURIES

The most common sports injuries include muscle sprains and strains, tendon injuries, dislocations, fractures, broken bones, and spine injuries. Remember, even though your young athlete wasn’t whisked away by ambulance, or you didn’t rush them to the ER with an immediately apparent injury, it can still take several hours for the bruising, swelling, and pain of an orthopedic injury to develop. If the injury is minor, you can treat it at home with Rest, Ice, Compression, and Elevation (RICE), for the first 48 hours. For pain

relief, offer a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID), like ibuprofen or naproxen. Never give aspirin to anyone under age 20, due to the risk of Reye syndrome, a rare but serious disease that targets the brain and liver. Don’t hesitate to head to the emergency room if the injury causes severe pain, swelling or numbness, or the injured area feels unstable or cannot bear any weight or pressure.

CONCUSSION AND HEAD INJURIES

Always be watchful for signs of concussion in your young athlete, whether he or she lost consciousness or not! Concussions account for about 12 percent of youth sports-related injuries. And, concussions aren’t only seen on the football field and definitely aren’t limited to boys. Here are a few facts that may surprise you: In youth basketball, almost 12 percent of girls seen in the emergency department were diagnosed with concussions compared, to 7 percent of boys.
In youth soccer, 17 percent of girls seen in

the emergency department were diagnosed with a concussion, compared to 12 percent of boys. It takes longer for athletes ages 13 to 16 to recover following a concussion than athletes ages 18 to 22.
Signs of concussion can be immediate or develop over hours or days. These include: • HEADACHE • DIZZINESS • SEEING “STARS” • RINGING IN THE EARS • NAUSEA OR VOMITING • APPEARING DAZED • CONFUSION • SLURRED SPEECH • SLOW RESPONSE TO QUESTIONS • MEMORY PROBLEMS • SENSITIVITY TO LIGHT • FATIGUE AND WANTING TO SLEEP • IRRITABILITY OR CHANGES IN PERSONALITY. Other signs of serious head injury include: worsening headache or pressure, seizures, repeated vomiting, pupils that are abnormally or unevenly dilated, and obvious changes in mental or physical function. Always seek emergency care if you suspect a child or adult has a concussion.

A WOMAN’S HEART

Genetic Differences that Impact Heart Health | A Q&A with Patricia A Guerrero, MD |

Q: A:

We know that heart disease is the #1 killer of women in the US – why is that? The answer is awareness. Many women are not aware that heart disease is the #1 killer of women, and may believe that other diseases such as breast cancer are more of a threat. This lack of awareness leads to women perhaps choosing to work on other preventative disease items or screenings that may not be related to heart disease. Data from the NHLBI shows that if women have just one risk factor—like high blood pressure, smoking, or being overweight—their risk of heart disease doubles. Studies show that one-third of women still underestimate their own personal risk of getting heart disease.

Q: A:

What exactly is “heart disease” and how can we tell if we have it? Heart and blood vessel disease is often called heart disease. It includes numerous problems, which are related to a process called atherosclerosis. Atherosclerosis is a condition that develops when a substance called plaque builds up in the walls of the arteries. This buildup narrows the arteries, making it harder for blood to flow through. If a blood clot forms, it can stop the blood flow leading to a heart attack or stroke. It is important to visit your Physician or Nurse Practitioner regularly to check cholesterol levels, weight, and blood pressure and investigate any symptoms of shortness of breath, chest pain, tiredness or nausea, as soon as they occur.

Q: A:

I’m a woman in my 30’s, 40’s or 50’s. Do I need to be concerned with heart disease? Identifying your risks should be performed at regular intervals as of age 18. Early identification

30 osceolawoman.com | JUL /AUG 2016

and treatment will decrease the odds of developing heart disease. You have a greater risk of heart disease if you are a man over age 45 or a woman over age 55. You also are at greater risk if you have a close family member who had heart disease at an early age. There are many things you can do reduce your chances of getting heart disease. You should know what medical conditions increase your risk such as: • • • • •

HIGH BLOOD PRESSURE LACK OF EXERCISE SMOKING AND SUBSTANCE ABUSE DIABETES HIGH BLOOD PRESSURE ASSOCIATED WITH PREGNANCY • HIGH CHOLESTEROL AND TRIGLYCERIDE LEVELS • POOR DIET • OVERWEIGHT OR OBESITY

Q: A:

Are there warning signs for heart disease or is it a “silent” issue until it turns into a heart attack? A heart attack does not always have obvious symptoms, such as pain in your chest, shortness of breath, and cold sweats. In fact, a heart attack can actually happen without knowing it. It is called a silent heart attack, or medically referred to as silent ischemia (lack of oxygen) to the heart muscle. Individuals who suffer from a silent heart attack are more likely to have non-specific and subtle symptoms, such as indigestion, a case of the flu, or they may think that they strained a muscle in their chest or upper back. It also may not be discomfort in the chest, it may be in the jaw or the upper back or arms. If any of these symptoms persist and there is no evidence of cold or fever you should seek medical attention.

BEAUTIFUL SKIN IS

FREE SKIN! | By Michael Steppie, MD |

Do

you long for smooth, firm, youthful skin that glows with an ethereal, natural beauty? Take a cue from this month’s Independence Day celebrations and free your skin of all that weighs it down and hides its glow and youthfulness.

Beautiful, healthy, vibrant skin is skin that’s free of heavy chemicals and toxins. Yet, many skincare products on the market today are filled with ingredients that are not only unhealthy, but may be downright dangerous for your skin. Examples include artificial fragrances, potentially cancercausing parabens, PEGs (polyethylene glycol), artificial colors, SLS (Sodium Lauryl Sulfate), which can damage the immune system, phenoxyethanol, which can shut down the central nervous system, and propylene glycol – the same agents used in caustic products like oven cleaners and antifreeze. Remember that your skin is your body’s first line of defense from external pathogens. It also protects your body from excessive water loss, and aids in insulation, temperature regulation, sensation, and the production of disease-fighting vitamin D. That’s why it’s critical to free your skin of all that harms it and hides it healthy glow. To that end, Dr. Michael Steppie, MD, president and medical of Associates in Dermatology, developed Ethereal Beauty™ Anti-Aging Cellular Serum. The serum’s patentpending Pro Organic Complex™ is made with a proprietary
