ABOUT THE GALLERY
Barbara Mathes Gallery was founded in 1978 and specializes in paintings, sculpture and works on paper by modern and contemporary masters. The gallery is known for its tightly focused one-person shows and for imaginative thematic exhibitions that present major modern and contemporary artists in new and illuminating contexts. The gallery is also dedicated to exhibiting the work of overlooked major masters in art historical contexts. In 2014, the gallery presented Spaces of American Pop: Allan D’Arcangelo, Joe Goode and Robert Moskowitz, which oVered a fresh view of three artists who captured the changing spaces of the American landscape during the 1960s. Other recent thematic exhibitions include According to Plan and California Dreaming. According to Plan explored the multivalent role that plans play in determining artistic outcomes, and California Dreaming featured a diverse selection of Californian artists active in the 1960s and 1970s, highlighting an alternative history of American art. Continuing its engagement with Italian Art of the Post-War period, the gallery recently exhibited sculpture, drawings and plaster works from the Fausto Melotti estate for the Wrst time in the United States. These works highlight a more personal and intimate side of the Italian master’s practice and represent a stark contrast to the reWned elegance of his metal sculptures. The Gallery has also presented Elementi Spaziali, a group exhibition of four prominent postwar Italian artists that have never been shown together in New York: Agostino Bonalumi, Enrico Castellani, Dadamaino and Paolo Scheggi. These four Milanese artists participated in a radical reinvention of painting that built on the insights of Lucio Fontana. Expanding on the implications of the older artist’s

slashed canvases, these artists created dynamic forms of relief that emphasized the work of art’s response to real light and space. The gallery has an ongoing history of organizing solo exhibitions of artists long due for reappraisal. In 2008, the gallery showed recent paintings and prints by Neil Jenney, marking the famously reclusive artist’s Wrst show of new work in New York in over twenty years. In 2010, the gallery presented a career survey of the French photographer Patrick Faigenbaum, in what was the artist’s Wrst New York solo show since 1999. In 2012, the gallery announced its representation of Agostino Bonalumi and organized the artist’s Wrst New York solo exhibition since the 1960s. In the spring of 2015, the gallery presented Tadaaki Kuwayama: Early Work, 1962–1975, an exhibition that reintroduced American audiences to the minimal paintings of Tadaaki Kuwayama. Kuwayama’s distinctive works were shown at the historic Green Gallery in the early 1960s and were included in the epochal 1966 Systemic Painting exhibition at the Guggenheim Museum.
