Many of us have experience with family and friends who suffer from cancer, crippling injuries, or substance abuse. We know what it is like to be called upon for emotional support and sometimes guidance as our loved ones struggle to deal with their day to day lives. Those are the people we know, and the challenges with which we are all too familiar. However, for many Americans, there is another challenge that confronts them every day - a challenge of which few of us are aware. That challenge is Social Anxiety Disorder, a fear-based condition that can ruin relationships, careers, and lives. Social anxiety support systems are as necessary for those individuals' long-term recovery as any support system for any other affliction. For sufferers, support systems may be even more essential than they are for people suffering from drug and alcohol abuse or a variety of other disorders. Because social anxiety stems from an individual's constant fear that others are judging them or their performance in social interactions, there is a natural tendency on the part of those with disorder to simply avoid as much contact with their fellow human beings as possible - effectively consigning them to the status of recluse. Obviously, that path only reinforces the underlying fears, making social interaction all the more difficult. Effective support systems, on the other hand, can assist the individual to overcome some, if not all, of their fears. Most support systems begin with family members and friends, who can fill an invaluable role in reassuring their loved one that their fears of being constantly evaluated by others around them are not grounded in reality. It is important to reassure them that they are loved for who they are, and accepted as they are. The attending physician or psychiatrist also plays an important part in the support system, as any treatment plan for the disorder should be designed to address the subject's fears at their source. Beyond family, friends, and doctors, social anxiety support systems can extend to the online world as well. There are a variety of forums and online support groups where individuals with social anxiety can meet to discuss their fears as well as methods of treatment that are assisting them in reclaiming their lives. More than any other form of treatment, support systems help to ensure that the patient maintains at least some minimum social interaction - which can often prevent the disorder from worsening.

Walter Shustikov is the author of the book "How to Conquer Social Anxiety Disorder Now" which has helped thousands of people overcome their social anxiety. He is also the owner of the most popular blog about social anxiety disorder called ShyandQuiet.com.
