global>national> regional>local The phenomena that is South by Southwest Music Conference and Festival (SXSW) has been an Austin tradition since its timely origin in 1987. Isolated in the middle of Texas, Austin has leveraged its reputation as a cultural mecca and ideal venue in part due its natural tendency to lend itself to eclectic and creative personalities from all over the world. The ten-day journey through music, film, and interactive embodies an experience that is unlike any other. SXSW continues to outgrow itself and prove that positive, creative energy is enduring and has no boundaries.

Music Wristbands: locals only

Wristbands allow access to Music Showcases during SXSWeek without a cover charge. Over 13,000 wristbands were sold in 2012. The retail price for a SXSW wristband started out at just $10 in 1987, but has grown to $225 for the 2013 festival. Wristbands can only be purchased by a credit card with an Austin or Austin area zipcode. An online purchasing system has been implemented in an attempt to make sure Austin area music fans have the opportunity to attend music showcases. “In 2004, Precision Dynamics Corporation (PDC) supplied South by Southwest (SXSW) with its Smart Band® RFID Wristband System during the world-renowned SXSW Music, Film and Interactive Festivals. SXSW used RFID technology for the first time to prevent counterfeiting and overcrowding while increasing public safety and ticket sales. In 2003 during SXSWeek, thousands of counterfeit wristbands were made and sold on the street with a face value of as much as $500,000. Smart Band wristbands revolve around a tiny, flat RFID chip, sealed in a nontransferable plastic wristband that uses customized software to store and transfer data which is read by RFID readers. The RFID chips used in SXSW wristbands contained serial numbers that were used to verify the authenticity of each band. Smart Band’s non-transferable feature is key to preventing scalping and unauthorized access to the information stored on the chips.”

“By day, Music conference registrants do business in the SXSW Trade Show at the Austin Convention Center and partake in a full agenda of informative, provocative panel discussions featuring hundreds of speakers of international stature. Workshops and Mentor sessions help educate up-and-coming industry leaders. At night, the SXSW Music and Media Conference showcases hundreds of musical acts from around the globe on over one hundred stages in downtown Austin. Music panel topics cover everything from touring to releasing your own music to practically every aspect of the music business. The goal is to educate, inform and help bring together the people who will form the future of the music business. Interactive panels consist of the following sections. Keynotes, Opening and Closing Remarks are hour-long presentations that feature creative innovators with a wide appeal who can capture the attention and imagination of the broader community. Solo, Dual and Panel Presentations consist of one moderator and two or three industry experts who represent different perspectives and opinions. Core Conversations are lessthan-formal sessions where a single moderator introduces the topic to be discussed and thenfacilitates the conversation. Book Readings give authors the chance to talk about

Meet Ups give SXSW registrants the opportunity to network with other technology industry professionals. Film panels provide insight into a broad range aspects of film, media and related fields. Sxsw 1987 The first SXSW Music Festival took place from March 12 to March 15 in 1987. Over 100 performances were schedule, and what was expected to be a local crowd of 150 people turned into a larger attendance of 700. The venues selected for the first SXSW festival were some of the most prominent venues in the music scene in Austin, along with other important establishments in the city. Of the original 16 venues, only 5 have remained official SXSW venues throughout the festival’s history.

antone’s 213 W 5th St

Antone’s opened in 1975 on 6th St. and became one of the biggest blues clubs in Austin. It’s owner, Clifford Antone, founded a record company in the same year as the first SXSW festival. This venue has hosted large names such as B.B. King, Jimmy Reed, Stevie Ray Vaughan and Eric Clapton. The club has since relocated to 5th St., but is still considered a major reason that Austin is the Music Capitol of the World.

The Continental Club 1315 S Congress Ave The Continental Club opened in 1957. A few years after its opening, it became the scene for the first burlesque club in Austin. The establishment changed ownership multiple times through the 60s and 70s, until 1987 when the club was transformed back to its original state. That same year it became an official SXSW venue, and has been one since. Like Antone’s, it is noted as one of the clubs that made Austin the Music Capitol of the World.

The Ritz Theatre opened in 1929 and originally featured western films. In 1981 it began to be used as a venue for punk rock bands, and was selected as a SXSW venue in 1987. In 2007 the Alamo Drafthouse Cinema relocated their downtown cinema to the Ritz. It is now one of the main venues for the SXSW Film Festival.

Based on a single purchase date on Februray 8, 2012, prices of round trip flights from JFK to AUS were compared using kayak.com. Each flight was booked for departure from JFK on Wednesday and returning from Austin on Sunday. Prices were compared for the entire year until January 2014 when flights were no longer available to book online. Bus services changes during 2013 Traditionally, Capital Metro has only provided limited extra service during SXSW. Last year, Capital Metro added service to Route 100 MetroAirport. This year, CapMetro will add additional services to route 1, 3, 10, 100, the E-Bus and the Q-Bus. Four additional stops will be added Route 100 (a limited stop service) to relieve overcrowding on Routes 7 and 20. E-Bus service currently does not operate when UT is out of school. During the ten days of SXSW cellphone users frequently experience ‘mobile outages’ due to extreme levels of network usage within the city of Austin.

The experimental wing BBH Labs of global marketing firm BBH attempted to market themselves using these ‘mobile outages’ to their advantage. Homeless Hotspots takes a local homeless person and creates them into a wireless hotspot. Right: A photo of Melvin wearing a t-shirt saying “I’m Melvin, a 4G hotspot. SMS ‘HH MELVIN’ to 25827 for access”. This controversial marketing experiment quickly made headlines all over the world, with mostly negative reviews and was terminated after SXSW 2012.
