Local Girl Makes Good Michelle Beisner has gone from Green Mountain High School to the NFL Network | As told to Doug Ottewill I went to school for mass communications, with an emphasis in journalism and theatre. I knew my entire life that I wanted to do something in sports journalism, that I wanted to be on stage or in front of a camera, telling stories or acting. There was always that desire from a very young age. I was the emcee at Pepsi Center for many years – working Avalanche, Nuggets and Mammoth games. I also started doing some work at Fox Sports Net Rocky Mountain – doing, comparatively speaking, MTV Cribs segments on a show. I remember very vividly hosting the Grand Prix of Denver in 2005. Sébastien Bourdais won. He was from Newman/Haas Racing, so I had the chance to interview Paul Newman at the end of the race. I was nervous. I was excited. John Mullin saw me do that interview and contacted me to see if I knew anything about Champ Car racing. I told him that I didn’t. He asked if I could learn about it, and I said yes. I got the chance to cover the Champ Car World Series, which was aired on NBC, CBS, ESPN, ABC. I did more lifestyle and feature pieces. About a year after that, I found myself in the pits, learning everything inside and out. I was a part of the team, covering the Champ Car World Series. It was awesome. It wasn’t something that I thought I would get involved in, but I was thrilled to be doing it. It was an immense challenge. I felt really fortunate to get the opportunity. I moved out to L.A. in 2006. I’m very type A. I made sure all of my ducks were in a row. I had an acting reel. I had a hosting reel. I had a theatrical agent and a manager. I had a host agent, a commercial agent, a dance agent. I was definitely prepared for this next step in life. I was going to stay involved with hosting, but I wanted to see if there was anything left on the acting side. I had been in a couple of films up to that point and I loved that, as well. I interviewed with the NFL Network after I moved out to L.A., in August 2006. My first assignment was to do a behind the scenes game-day piece at a Broncos game. It was more or less my audition and it worked out. I’ve very happily done a lot of different things with the NFL Network. I’ve hosted my own show, NFL Weekly Countdown, which was nominated for a Sports Emmy in 2009. I’ve done years of field reporting, which is what I’m doing now. There have been a lot of things that I’ve been able to tap into. It’s been great.

Being a Broncos Cheerleader has truly shaped the woman that I am. I was 19 or 20 when I started. The most important thing that it teaches you is accountability. You are not only representing yourself, but you’re representing the women next to you and the entire organization. I wouldn’t be the person I am without the leadership of Teresa Shear, Shelly True and Jay Hayworth. They had a tremendous influence and still do. It’s truly been an honor for me to be able to say that I was an NFL cheerleader. It was the greatest six-plus years of my life. It made me accountable. It made me respectful. It’s humbled me. It made me a better woman, a better person. There’s a sad and unfortunate misconception that goes along with being an NFL cheerleader. I thoroughly enjoyed week after week, year after year breaking down that stereotype. If someone sees you a certain way, it’s fun being able to prove them wrong. For me, it was one of my greatest joys. I enjoyed breaking down those walls, showing that there was more to me than what people just thought of NFL cheerleaders. There is substance, depth, intelligence and charisma. I’ve been able to translate that to a professional career. I know there are a lot of naysayers out there who believe women don’t belong in sports (media). It’s a work in progress every day. I’m still trying to work through that. There are a million different ways to get in the door – who you know, how you look, etc. The challenge is whether or not you can stay there. Some people have been able to do it; some have not. I’m never going to be complacent. I’m never going to be satisfied. I’m always going to keep growing, bettering where I am. That’s because for so many years there have been people out there who have said, “Oh, she’s just a cheerleader,” or “Oh, she’s not smart enough,” or “Oh, she’s just another blond doing what she does.” It’s a challenge every day, but it’s one I take on and embrace because the end result becomes so much more gratifying. (Every opportunity) has been significant in its own way. When I made Broncos, that was a big deal. That was a big, life-changing moment because of the journey, because of the way it shaped me. When I was started on the Champ

This Month in the MHS World Car World Series and was embarking on that journey, that was significant, as well. They’ve all been “big breaks” for me. But because I’ve been able to develop them, and hopefully get better and better at each step, it’s become more about the long journey; it’s taking the opportunities that are given to you and capitalizing on them, not wasting them at all. They’re all significant. They’ve all made me better, smarter, stronger and more ambitious. I’m pretty self-deprecating. I think imperfections are what make you special. It builds your character. I was in Seattle, covering Terrell Owens’ first practice as a Seahawk. I was doing my report, which consisted of about a 20-second open, the report and a 20-second close. I finished my close and the host back at NFL Networks says, “Thanks so much, Michelle. Great report. We look forward to seeing how this goes.” I’m standing there nodding, which is what we’re supposed to – nod for a few seconds while the hosts thank us, and then move on. I then hear in my ear, “You’re hot.” So I’m wondering, “Is my mic still hot?” So I give a thumbs up – two thumbs up, actually – into the camera to tell the control room that I heard them. Apparently, I was in a two-box, which I had no idea, giving two thumbs up and a cheesy grin while the host and other reporter were conducting an interview. I got a lot of tweets about that. But you have to embrace those kinds of things, too. Life is not perfect. Life is a whole lot of imperfections. You can’t beat yourself up over little things; you have to learn to laugh at yourself and push forward, or you won’t make it in this business. I find NFL players to be extremely interesting. I continue to be fascinated. What they put themselves through on a daily basis is amazing. Peyton Manning has so much depth and charisma. It’s incredible to see how much he’s done for the (Broncos) organization and how much he’s changed the culture of the locker room. I first interviewed him before he hosted Saturday Night Live. He was nervous because it was so out of his comfort zone. To see how natural and funny he was during rehearsal was pretty awesome. You could really tell that he was taking on something very new and there were nerves there. That just shows you what kind of a man he is; he can rise to any challenge and just take things on. I remember (Mike Vick) being such a different man when I interviewed him after he got out of jail. When I covered his first practice as an Eagle, he was so humble. I remember very distinctly that I could see a completely different man just by looking at his face. He didn’t have to say a word. There was clear change there. He wasn’t the same man I interviewed before. I told him that I could see the change. He said, “Yes, ma’am, I have (changed). And thank God for it.” People can change. People can learn. People can better themselves. I was on the “Manning Watch.” I was on my way to cover a regional combine, but had

a connection in Denver on my way to Atlanta. When I arrived in Denver, my boss called me and said, “Somehow, get your bag off that flight and get down to Dove Valley ASAP. Peyton Manning is on his way there.” I packed for only two days, but was on the road for 21 straight days. I was buying a new outfit every single day. (Peyton Manning) would not have come back and made the kind of commitment if he didn’t think he could rise to the challenge. Just from the little bit of time that I’ve been around him in interviews, to see the way that he commands respect out of everyone and changes the culture of any situation that he’s in, I knew that it was going to be big. Without a doubt, I knew it was going to special. It’s on a different level than the type of attention that the Broncos got in the past with Tim Tebow. It’s what the Broncos have been looking for – their next great quarterback. For so long, the Broncos were looking for somebody to fill John Elway’s shoes. I don’t know that anyone could have done

After the whole Tebow thing last year, I’m not sure anyone could have filled those shoes, either. There are so many similarities to the way John Elway impacted the team. It’s the same kind of leadership. It’s the same kind of command of the situation. I’m never going to be complacent or satisfied with where I am or what I’m doing. I’m on a very long journey. I don’t know exactly where it’s going or what’s next. I just know that the only thing I strive to do day in and day out is the best work that I can, learn from it and grow from it. I know that I want to stay in television. I know that I want to stay in entertainment and sports. I know that I’m not done. I have great people around me who have helped me evolve. I’m very grateful for the opportunities I’ve been given. I know that if I stick to my core beliefs, good things are on the horizon.

ithout question, this issue is the single most intriguing thing we do – or at least that’s how it appears. It’s the magazine I get asked about the most, and secondplace might as well be fifth. How does it work? Who gets to be in the photographs? Who gets to take the pictures? Where? Why? When? Inquiring minds want to know. be defined as a themed photo shoot that compliments the brand image of one of our clients. We like to think of these guys as brilliant marketers. And that’s no lie. After 10 years of working on this issue, I’m reliant on the creativity and vision of our sponsors to come up with new and unique concepts for our Snow Angels. Sure, the staff at Mile High Sports has the occasional “assist,” but it’s largely a joint effort. And the joint effort is no small task. First, these guys – often referred to as “stylists” – hear what the client needs. They take into consideration the shot theme, the location and

They put on a smile, along with not much else, and parade around in front of the entire group. Plus, they get to hear approximately 27 inappropriate jokes and comments during the course of any one shoot. Immaturity runs amuck and yet, they are great sports who make great pictures.

Story Behind the Story featuring photographer Bill swartz Don’t let the photo fool you; bill swartz is a man’s man.

bill lost the prettiest girl he’d ever photographed – his wife of 41 years, Dee.

He likes the stuff men like. A good steak. beer from a stein. And pretty girls.

understandably, and as manly as bill might be, he took the loss hard pretty hard. He loved Dee, and always treated her like gold.

He’s been a big part of snow Angels for seven years now. As one of our “preferred” photographers, the handiwork of swartz Photography regularly highlights the pages of Mile High Sports Magazine, and in December, it shines brightest. bill and his business partner and fellow photographer, randy Parietti, are some of the sharpest shooters this side of Abilene (bill likes a good Western, too – John Wayne style). And they’ve shot everyone in Denver from high-powered cEos and government figures to Joe sakic, chauncey billups, Eric Decker and Demaryius thomas – and dozens and dozens of snow Angels. And they always hit the mark. Always. but bill is more than just a photographer – he’s a great advisor. He’s got an endless supply of creative ideas and he’s always willing to experiment with new lighting techniques, just to freshen things up. but more than anything, he’s got an incredible enthusiasm for every project, no matter what it might be. this year was no different, as bill brought the same level of passion and excitement to every photo we took. And that was amazing, considering this wasn’t exactly the best year for bill. You see, on May 31,

After all, he is a hopeless romantic at heart, something that’s reflected in his work as a photographer. He’s old fashioned and always treats the fairer sex with respect and dignity. His goal with each and every photo is to make the girl in front of the camera look as beautiful as she truly is. Every snow Angel who has had the privilege of modeling for bill and randy can attest – Dee was a lucky lady. throughout the summer (snow Angels is practically a year-long project), bill held his head high, never letting anyone on set see him down. Always the gentleman, bill made the best of every day at the studio. And through it all, he never lost his great sense of humor (note the adjoining photo; bill’s a model, too), something every “serious” photo shoot desperately needs. bill and randy took the photo for this year’s cover, plus a bunch more on the pages that follow. their work, as always, is on the mark. Look at the photos closely; each snow Angel exudes happiness and confidence, largely because of bill, who worked hard to make every session as perfect as it could be. bill is one of the good guys, something Dee knew for more than four decades.

Denver Cutthroats forwarD WHY: When the Denver Cutthroats brought minor league hockey back to the mile high City during the summer, part of the excitement surrounding the move was the ability to attract local talent back home. Colorado Springs native Luke Fulghum is one of those many Cutthroats with deep local ties. ¶ The 32-year-old former Denver Pioneer bounced around the minor leagues in europe for eight years before returning to his native state in June to help form part of the Cutthroats’ key veteran core. Fulghum played in Finland and most recently england, where he played four seasons in the top english hockey league. ¶ Fulghum went to Coronado high School before leaving for a massachusetts prep school for a year and eventually playing with Waterloo (Iowa) of the uShL, before returning to play his college puck at Du. ¶ During the spring, Fulghum heard rumors that there might be a minor league team popping up in Denver, and it immediately caught his attention. A few months later, the Cutthroats made Fulghum their second player in franchise history, only after defenseman Aaron mackenzie signed just a few weeks prior. ¶ The former maple Leafs and Blue Jackets minor leaguer and his wife recently had a baby boy, adding to Fulghum’s excitement to return back home. “It was huge for my wife and I and our son to get this opportunity to play at home and to settle down.” ¶ With current NhLer kyle Quincey and several other experienced players forming the backbone of the Cutthroats’ roster, it should be a fun winter at the Denver Coliseum. by Chris bianChi

A Perfect Case Study

The Buffs and Rams should be encouraged by K-State’s revival | By James Merilatt

his month, college bowl season will be in full swing. From games played between mediocre teams in places no one would ever want to visit to tropical locales hosting matchups between marquee programs, nearly every day from Dec. 15 through the title game on Jan. 7 will feature a bowl of some sort. Even with 35 games on the docket, however, schools with “Colorado” in their name won’t be making a postseason appearance. Neither CU nor CSU will go bowling in 2012. And it doesn’t look like they are poised to do it any time soon. But it doesn’t have to be that way. There is reason for hope. A turnaround in Boulder or Fort Collins isn’t mission impossible. Why the reason for optimism? Because Kansas State is proving, for the second time,

that a program can rise from the ashes to become a national power. Back in 1989, Bill Snyder’s first season in Manhattan, the Wildcats were the worst team in college football. They had lost 27 consecutive games, hadn’t won a conference title since 1934 and had been declared “Futility U” in a Sports Illustrated article that also declared K-State as “America’s most-hapless team.” As a result, they had crappy facilities, no fan support and no reason for hope. Less than 10 years later, Snyder guided the Wildcats to a perfect 11-0 regular season; they finished 11-2. And four years later, Kansas State won the Big 12 title. Now in his second stint at the school, the coach is doing it again. After taking over a team that had once again fallen on hard times, finishing tied with Colorado at 5-7 overall and 2-6 in the conference in 2008, Snyder has K-State amongst the elite programs in the country. How did he do it? Hard work, preparation and great leadership. Naysayers will try to negate some of Snyder’s impact by saying the Wildcats are able to win because they bring in juco transfers that can’t get into other schools. While there may be some truth to that, the loose admissions standards certainly didn’t help Ron Prince, the coach who went 17-20 during Snyder’s three-

season hiatus. And it doesn’t explain how so many schools missed out on Collin Klein, a kid from Loveland who certainly could have gotten into CU, CSU or any other BCS school. So while this month is a depressing time to be a Buffs or Rams fan, there’s reason to take heart. When K-State takes the field in their bowl game, remember this simple truth: If they can win in Manhattan, it’s possible to win anywhere.

Sports and Religion When games and gods intersect

hristmas, Hanukkah and Solstice are all just around the corner. But without Tim Tebow around, the subject of religion and sports hasn’t been discussed nearly as much this year. Tebow was a lightning rod of controversy, but he certainly isn’t the first athlete to bring faith onto the field of play. In the spirit of the holidays, here are some of the most recognizable athletes who put religion first.

Kurt Warner – In February 2004, Warner gave a speech at a Baptist convention where he said he had lost his starting job as the St. Louis Rams quarterback because of his faith and not because of an injury. Warner said, “I actually had coaches say I was reading the Bible too much and it was taking away from my play. It was okay when we were winning, but now I was messing this thing up? People were saying I had lost my job because of my faith.” After a public scolding by coach Mike Martz for making a “bald-faced lie,” Warner apologized. “It was my

intention to give an inspirational message about keeping the faith and fighting through adversity.” The Rams released Warner in June 2004. Sandy Koufax – On Oct. 6, 1965, the L.A. Dodgers’ star pitcher missed the opening game of the World Series against the Minnesota Twins because it fell on the Jewish holiday of Yom Kippur. Koufax stated, “There was never any decision to make because there was never any possibility that I would pitch. Yom Kippur is the holiest day of the Jewish religion. The club knows that I don’t work that day.” The Dodgers lost that game 8-2. Koufax returned to start three of the remaining six games and was named the Series MVP after pitching a shutout in the deciding game seven. MahMoud abdul-rauf – The ex-Nugget sparked controversy for refusing to stand for the national anthem, claiming that doing so conflicted with his Islamic beliefs. On March 12, 1996, the NBA suspended Abdul-Rauf for his

position; however, the suspension only lasted one game. Two days later, the league worked out a compromise with him, whereby he would stand during the playing of the national anthem but could close his eyes and look down. He usually silently recited a Muslim prayer during this time. haKeeM olajuWon – The devout Muslim fasted for an entire month during Ramadan for virtually every season of his NBA career. Olajuwon was noted as actually having played better during this month, despite losing weight. In 1995, he was named NBA Player of the Month in February, even though Ramadan began on Feb. 1 of that year. MuhaMMad ali – On April 28, 1967, the boxing champion refused to be drafted into the U.S. Army and was immediately stripped of his heavyweight title. Ali, a Muslim, cited religious reasons for his decision to forgo military service. Ali stated, “I ain’t got no quarrel with those Vietcong.” On June 20, 1967, Ali was convicted of draft evasion, fined $10,000, sentenced to five years in prison and banned from boxing for three years. He stayed out of prison, as his case was appealed, and returned to the ring on Oct. 26, 1970.

A 1978 game between the Chargers and Raiders earned a religious moniker after Raiders quarterback Ken Stabler fumbled the ball forward on the game’s final play as he was being sacked. Stabler’s teammate, Pete Banaszak, recovered, and then did the same thing when he was hit. Raider Dave Casper then picked the ball up in the end zone, and after a successful point after try, the Raiders won. Now, my personal idea of camping is at a four- or five-star resort in the mountains that has a nice fireplace, warm bedding and room service. But if you’re the more rugged type with a tent and such, don’t let your camping season end when the leaves fall off the trees. Mueller State Park is open for camping through the winter. Winter camping is first-come, first-served. If you’d rather not rough it, try out one of Mueller’s three modern cabins. His epic jump over the Great Wall of China and many other milestones are included in this film, as well as a who’s who of action sports all-stars like Travis Pastrana and Tony Hawk. Want to impress the ladies? Take her to B’s Ballpark Museum on Blake Street in Denver. Located in the LoDo neighborhood, B’s is the culmination of curator Bruce Hellerstein’s lifelong love of baseball. Visiting B’s Ballpark Museum, located across from Coors Field, is enough of a reason to love life here in Colorado. If you are a baseball fan in general or are devoted to ballparks in particular, you owe it to yourself to visit this nationally recognized public museum. And, after you’ve had a stroll through the impressive collection, take your gal to one of the local establishments for a cold beer and a warm burger. She’ll love it, and maybe even love you for it. hristmas time brings a few givens – peace on earth, goodwill towards men, chestnuts roasting on an open fire and, lately, a Broncos loss. When the Cleveland Browns ride a one horse open sleigh into the Mile High on Dec. 23, the Denver Broncos should have a playoff berth and their second consecutive AFC West division title well in hand – a stark difference from where they stood 365 days (counting leap day) prior. Tim Tebow so famously quipped, “Tomorrow’s still Christmas,” after the Broncos suffered a 40-14 beatdown in Buffalo to a Bills team that entered the Christmas Eve 2011 showdown a paltry 5-9. In the driver’s seat to lock up the division with two

games to play, Denver went on to back into the playoffs after the Buffalo loss and a week 17 choke job against Kyle Orton and the Chiefs on New Year’s Day. But holiday meltdowns have been nothing new to the Broncos. Over the past five years, Denver has run up a 1-5 record in games surrounding the Christmas holiday; the lone win being the Tebow-led 24-23 comeback against Houston on Dec. 26, 2010. A Dec. 27, 2009 loss in Philadelphia was the third in a string of four consecutive losses to end that season. Denver fell in San Diego on Christmas Eve 2007, 23-3. And who can forget the epic collapse of 2008? When, with three games in hand to win the division, Denver dropped its final three

games of the year – including a home loss to Buffalo (Dec. 21) followed by a season-ending 52-21 shellacking at San Diego (Dec. 28) in the final two weeks of the year – to lose the division and ultimately cost Mike Shanahan his job. And though the past five years haven’t been holly jolly for Denver, Christmastime hasn’t always been a humbug for the Broncos. From 2002-06 Denver went 4-1 around Christmas, including a 31-17 playoff-clinching win over Peyton Manning’s Colts on Dec. 21, 2003. And on Christmas day itself, Denver is undefeated all-time at 2-0. Last year’s Christmas Eve massacre is now a distant memory. Manning and John Fox now have the Broncos looking good down the home stretch and a deep playoff run in their sights. So ask Santa to drop down the chimney a little early this year and leave a pair of ducats to the Dec. 23 battle with the Browns. While recent history has suggested otherwise, this year the Broncos will look to make it a very Merry Christmas for the fans.

Signs for hope at the end of the year | By Chris Bianchi

he 2012 season didn’t go the way new head coach Oscar Pareja or the Colorado Rapids wanted it to. But valuable lessons were learned from season one and the Rapids ended the year on a two-game winning streak, momentum they hope can carry over to 2013. The Rapids went 3-2-2 in their final seven games of the season, getting key contributions from younger players such as goalkeeper Steward Ceus, midfielder/ striker Kamani Hill, and even an impressive season finale from left back and newcomer Chris Klute. The Rapids won their final two games at Chivas USA and at home to Houston, leaving a positive taste after a mostly sour season. But even with the backto-back wins to end the year in mind, big changes and adjustments will have to be made for the Rapids to get back to the playoffs in 2013.

With that in mind, Pareja held an additional three weeks of training after the season ended on Oct. 27. Pareja used it to make sure his players would be in proper conditioning for the start of preseason in January. In addition, Pareja used the November training sessions to get more individual working time with players, to work on their specific strengths and weaknesses. With several younger players not getting a chance until the end of the season, the Rapids’ coaching staff took advantage of the extra time to work on specific weaknesses. All-in-all, despite the Rapids missing the postseason for the first time in three years, year one of the Pareja regime rounded out in positive fashion, perhaps serving as a strong foundation for better things to come in 2013.

Creativity is the name of Kamani Hill’s game. He freely admits that he’s not accustomed to sticking to a particular zone or attacking lane. “I come in from all over,” says Hill of his freeroaming scoring style.

Aside from his physical and mental skills, Hill’s experience is one of his biggest assets. With a strong international background, including stops in the German Bundesliga and in Portugal, Hill has seen, and played in, a wide range of styles.

Opposing defenders not only need to keep track of Hill’s whereabouts, but they’d better watch both feet, too. In a limited minutes role, Hill managed to find the back of the net five times this past season, largely because he can attack and shoot with both his left and right foot.

INTERNATIONAL FLAVOR KAmANI HILL bRINgs IT IN THE KITcHEN As with most things, habit, or in some cases “expertise,” is born out of necessity. Such was the case for Kamani Hill of the Colorado Rapids. Hill, like most kids who grow up in California, has always liked “American” food. The stuff his mom made. The meals he ate while playing soccer with his friends and even as a star at UCLA. A little of this. A little of that. But when he finally made it in the sport he loved, right out of college in 2007, that food was no longer around. Making it all the way to the German Bundesliga comes with great honor. But it doesn’t come with great food – at least, not great American food. “After being in Germany for so long, there were a lot of American things that I did not – could not – have access to,” recalls Hill. “So I decided to cook some things that had the ‘taste of home.’” Like anyone away from home, Hill missed friends and family most. Six years ago, there wasn’t even video chat. So, food was the closest thing to home he could control. He started gathering some of his mother’s favorite recipes, experimenting, tasting and perfecting. Pretty soon, Hill was cooking all kinds of things, many of which reminded him of being back home in America. His next stop was Portugal. He continued perfecting his mother’s dishes, but he also picked up some new techniques into a practice that had become somewhat of a hobby. “Over time, cooking has become more of a pastime,” says Hill, who admits he cooks a little less now that he’s back home, but still creates the majority of his meals from scratch. “I just enjoy taking the two hours out of your night and preparing something that’s satisfactory. If you work hard on something that’s delicious, it’s twice as good.” Hill doesn’t have a signature dish per se; he’s busy perfecting multiple recipes and adding more. As an athlete, his cooking has taken on even more importance. “I like knowing what I’m putting into my body,” he says. “That helps you as a competitor.” He’s an American boy with an American palate, but with a hint of international flavor – something that can be tasted in his masterful creations.

1 – Matt Prater, in his fifth full season with the Broncos, has become a fan favorite and a rock for the franchise. In between belting out record kicks, he found some time to give MHSM a tour of “Prater Country.” Ironically, for the first time in his six-year NFL career, Matt is actually living in his own home. While his permanent residence is in Florida, Matt has always lived in a hotel during the NFL season. “I’ve always had one-year deals, so it didn’t make much sense to buy.” After signing a four-year contract with Denver in the summer, however, Prater knew it was time to put down some roots. Although he’ll miss the daily maid service, home ownership in Colorado has the kicker fired up. That long deal with the Broncos meant he could buy this golf villa in the Parker area. “It’s perfect for me. It’s a good size and I can golf, too!” 2 – Most of the time, you’ll find Matt in his living room. There’s good reason for this, as the oversize couch is incredibly comfortable and the plasma TV is big enough to enjoy video games and all kinds of movies. As an avid movie watcher, Matt takes advantage of the setup. The room is so comfortable, most of the time he sees no point in leaving. “I have kind of a media room downstairs,” he says, “but I’m too lazy to walk down there. This works.” 3 – Right off the living room is a great balcony space with a view to enjoy, but Matt hasn’t taken full advantage of this yet. “I’m not out here as much as I should be,” he says. Since Matt just moved into the place recently, he still some work to do. “I need to get a grill, and I would like to build a fire pit, too.” Although there are a few houses he can see from his balcony, there’s a lot of open space to look at. After living the hotel life in Detroit, Miami and Atlanta, Matt thoroughly enjoys the Colorado view.

4 – Matt’s kitchen is beautiful, but doesn’t get a lot of use. “I don’t cook much,” he admits. Needless to say, he eats out a lot in the Parker area. There is of course, the clubhouse option, which Matt is close enough to see from his balcony. “It’s really convenient to eat there, that’s for sure.” On a special night, Matt will head out to Fleming’s steakhouse near Inverness.

5 – There’s a lot about the four-bedroom, 3,200-square foot house that Matt likes, but it’s his closet that he really loves. It has custom shelves, which is a perfect place for some of his most-prized possessions – his shoes. “I’m like a chick with my shoes,” he says proudly.

6 – Matt looked at more than 30 homes before he found this golf villa in Parker. There was a lot he liked about this home, but when he walked into the master bedroom and bathroom, he was sold. That’s because there’s a two-sided fireplace in-between the two. How’s that for styling? 7 – Although he spends most of his time upstairs, when he feels like mixing it up, Matt heads downstairs to his theater area. While his job may be pressure filled, his relaxation time is not. The comfortable recliners ensure that the only stress Matt feels is deciding which movie to watch. 8 – Matt’s family still lives in Florida where he grew up. Now that he has this new house, his family and friends are able to stay with him. However, they may never leave. Downstairs there are two bedrooms, two bathrooms, the theater setup and a wet bar.

Back in the day – let’s say sometime in the late 1800s – original footballs were made of a pig’s bladder. But Wolfe is anything but flashy. At his very core, he’s blue collar through and through. He’s a workhorse, as evidenced by his consistency and reliability on the field this year – as a rookie. That makes perfect sense, as Wolfe grew up in rural Negley, Ohio. He helped out on the family farm, an operation that took care of more than 100 Angus cows year-round, and he starred on the football team at Beaver Local High School. He developed skills and smarts on the football field, and “man strength” off of it. “Most guys don’t live on a farm and don’t

have all the little things that have to get done,” Wolfe told the Denver Post’s Lindsay H. Jones moments after he’d been drafted by the Broncos. “It humbles you and helps you remember where you came from. “It’s helped develop a toughness and a work ethic. Waking up early has never been a problem because you had to wake up early before school to get things done. The troubled linebacker opens up for the first time in years

Those are just some of the less-thanflattering words used to describe Broncos linebacker D.J. Williams in recent months. This morning, Williams is only 10 days away from returning from a nine-game suspension for failing a drug test and a DWAI conviction stemming from a November 2010 arrest. Williams, a 2004 first-round pick who’s led the Broncos in tackles in five of his eight seasons coming into 2012, may be considered a success on the field, but his all-too consistent off-field troubles have sparked controversy at best, hatred at worst and down-the-center disappointment for most. Part of the harsh judgment comes from several questionable actions, but Williams is also notoriously difficult for the media to deal with. Reporters looking for a quote from the now-30year-old University of Miami product are always turned down, some politely and most rather bluntly. And Williams’ disconnect with the media has unquestionably helped shape a strongly negative perception around the talented-yettroubled linebacker. 50

Starting in September 2005 with his first DUI conviction, a second DUI arrest in November 2010 (lowered to a DWAI in an August conviction), and wrapping up with two failed drug tests in 2011 and the subsequent ninegame suspension that he’s currently serving, the 17th overall pick in the 2004 draft is in the doghouse of many Broncos fans. And his previous media silence only appears to alienate him further. But on Thursday night, Williams opened up publicly with the media for the first time in more than two years, talking about his troubled past, his uncertain future and his refined present. “It’s hard to open up to people that you don’t know,” Williams exclusively told Mile High Sports from his kitchen table, appearing relaxed and speaking far beyond the allotted half-hour scheduled interview. “That’s not me. That’s not my personality. I don’t talk to people I don’t know genuinely.” Williams candidly spoke on a smorgasbord

of topics for nearly a full hour on Thursday, from his heavily criticized social media antics to his desire to retire as a Bronco and his “Dyme Lyfe” lifestyle movement. Let’s start with social media – often the source of several of Williams’ headaches over the years – and Dyme Lyfe, which is closely related to his Twitter account (@DJWilliam55). If you were to glance at his Twitter account, you’d find frequent references to Dyme Lyfe and retweets, or mentions, from various fans sporting t-shirts and other clothing sporting the two words that have taken on a life of their own. Despite little mention of the exact definition of what exactly it means, the “Dyme Lyfe” has gradually developed a negative connotation. Williams helped spearhead the Dyme Lyfe movement two years ago with then-Broncos teammates Ronald Fields and Marcus Thomas as a means to positively get through a difficult 4-12 season in 2010. Holding up a pinky, ring and middle finger and using the same hand’s thumb and index fingers to form a circle, most outsiders might interpret the hand gesture as an “okay” sign. However, many critics have taken it as either a gang symbol or a reference to smoking marijuana, a claim Williams vehemently denies. Instead, he said it was simply a way for the three teammates to stay positive. “It has nothing to do with anything negative,” Williams said. “It has nothing to do with

smoking marijuana. We have a creed. It’s a select few who focus on bonding, and building relationships with each other and indulging in the finer things in life, and never, I repeat, never, press for attention or accept it. That’s what ‘Dyme Lyfe’ means; it’s almost like paying something forward. It’s not treating somebody like you’d treat yourself; it’s far beyond that.” But Williams’ prolonged silence helped allow the stories and rumors about the Dyme Lyfe’s true origin to circulate. And like a bad game of telephone, stories tend to get worse over time. His Twitter-related problems don’t end there, however. When Williams tweeted that he was going out to party after the Broncos lost an October 2010 game to the 49ers in London, he was vilified on Twitter. He took exception to the criticism. The player who had made his living with his body was now broken physically and emotionally. There were no more games to play. No more crowds to cheer for him. Nowhere else to go to fill his need for adrenaline. He was trapped in a melancholy state of adulthood that tormented him day in and day out. He sought solace in the bottle and cards. His relationship with his wife was fractured and almost beyond repair. His two young children longed for a daddy that was present but instead lived every day in a distant land where only the competition of professional sports can transport a mere mortal to superhuman gladiator. His future was uncertain at best. He knew the things that he was supposed to love. He knew that his wife, the mother of his children, had her own rights, but living in some sort of crowded suburban existence was, well, just hell on earth. Restraint isn’t easy to come by when you’ve lived a life based on rage. Where do you put these emotions? Where do you find comfort? The 52

loss of ability almost pales in comparison to the loss of the men that you bond with through sweat, adversity, failure and victory. There isn’t a reasonable place to go to. There isn’t a simple path. Instead, you find yourself – as a young man – feeling old. What you’ve known of life isn’t just beginning; it has ended. Perhaps drinking is the easiest solution. Perhaps gambling makes the most sense. Coaching just doesn’t ring the same bells as playing. Besides, why in the world would he coach those who can never live up to his own perceived standards. In addition, who is going to hire him anyway? He folds his hands and grits his teeth. He sublimates his true person because this restaurant isn’t a locker room. Perhaps it would just be easier to fight. Perhaps a fist to the face would bring something to life. Nobody understands what this is now like. He’s tried running other businesses. He’s dabbled in running camps. He has had a million people suggest a million things, but now he is a stranger

in their world. All these years spent on the field for what? Memories? Autographs? A pat on the back? A friendly shake of the head? He is a rookie all over again and it truly hurts. His eyes stare beyond the whispers that he gets everywhere he goes. He was the best – always – at everything. Now, well, what now? There are promises about the future that he has no idea if he can keep. Frankly, there was no need to prepare for the inevitable when you are invincible. “I want to be a professional athlete,” he hears from kids almost every day. The kids never say what they want to be after they are professional athletes. He doesn’t want to be surrounded by more people. He doesn’t need it. He wants to be left alone. Is that possible? Can he find peace in with his own thoughts surrounded by nothing but acres and acres of open space? It haunts him. Nobody is ever going to feel sorry for him. Hell, he doesn’t want that, either. But how in the world can he ask for help now? He’s been the one supporting everybody else. He’s been the one who has been the strongest. He’s not a damn salesperson or a cubicle dweller. He is where he is now because of the glory, but where

Newspaper articles and TV shows don’t feed anything but the media’s own need to survive. He used it and they used him. Help. But, there isn’t anybody or anything to fill the void. But, ah yes, it was once glorious. It was once everything you can dream. He closes his eyes and the crowd comes back, the cheering erupts, the good moments crush the low valleys. His sore bones and lingering aches melt away in the silence of his own thoughts. He smiles silently. He opens his eyes and looks for his kid. The birthday party at Chuck E. Cheese is over. It’s time to go home. It’s time to grow up.

e love sports – watching them, that is. We love our HD televisions and the fancy remote controls that come with them. We love sports bars and the junk food they serve. Our young people, in particular, love sports video games, like Madden NFL.

As a whole, the United States is one of the worst countries on the planet in terms of lifelong sports participation. A small percentage of us play the games and the rest of us watch. The problem starts early. While the number of boys and girls (ages 5–12) participating in youth sports programs is strong, nearly 70 percent of them have dropped out of organized sports programs by 13.

This is unfortunate because the teen years are a time when sports participation can have its greatest benefits. Multiple studies show that youngsters who participate in sports are less likely to smoke, consume illegal drugs and alcohol, miss classes, have behavioral issues, drop out of school, suffer from anxiety and depression, and get pregnant. In addition, for those involved in sports, self-esteem tends to rise, grades improve, and the ability to solve problems, handle adversity and be creative improves. We need to focus on getting our young people moving more through quality physical education programs, sports and other physical 54

activities. Young people who are active through high school are more active than their lessactive school peers through their adult years. Active children tend to turn into active adults. Unfortunately, the reality today is that P.E. classes are being cut, intramural sports programs – that any student can participate in regardless of athletic ability – are being eliminated and recess time is being shortened. Colorado schools are some of the worst offenders in the country in these three areas. All of this is happening at a time when we need these programs more than ever. If current trends hold, diabetes is expected to afflict a third of the population by 2050 (obesity, a prime cause of diabetes, will afflict half the population by 2030). The expected annual cost of diabetes in 2034, according to a recent academic study, is $336 billion. As a society, we need to seriously review our priorities when it comes to sports, and redirect some of our public investment dollars.

For example, in the first decade of this century, taxpayers doled out approximately $1 billion a year to pro sports teams’ wealthy corporate owners in the form of sparkling new stadiums and arenas, according to one study. Those dollars would be much better directed toward intramural sports programs and daily physical education classes in our schools. “Most nations fund sports in a true pyramid fashion, with lots of money at the base for youth grassroots participation and little at the top for elite athletics,” says former U.S. Rep. Tom McMillen. “In America, we have inverted the pyramid. We provide little at the base for community sports and school physical education programs for our children, while lavishing public subsidies at the top, for example, giving vast amounts of tax dollars to build professional sports stadiums. If we want to win the fight against child obesity, we must flip this pyramid and devote real resources to youth grassroots efforts.” According to a report from the Secretary of Health and Human Services and the Secretary of Education, entitled Promoting Better Health for Young People Through Physical Activity and Sports, “Enhancing efforts to promote physical activity and sports among young people is a crucial national priority.” The benefits of increased physical activity aren’t just in the student wellness area. A growing mound of research shows that physically fit students perform better academically and have fewer behavioral problems. Naperville (Ill.) School District No. 203 is an example of a school system that gets it.

They fund a high-quality, fitness-based, daily physical education program that provides all students an opportunity to explore a variety of team sports, individual sports and other physical activities. Every student takes P.E. every day. The physical education program stresses the mind-body connection and how regular exercise enhances wellness, academic performance and behavior. A vibrant intramural sports program also exists as an option for Naperville students, and the varsity athletic program at Naperville Central High School has high participation numbers and numerous league, regional and state championships to the school’s credit. Naperville’s results are outstanding across the board. Consider that while nationally 30 percent of U.S. schoolchildren are overweight, typically only five to 10 percent of Naperville school kids are overweight in any given year. Naperville’s focus on “exercise for the brain” has paid off in the classroom, as well, as the district’s academic test scores are way above the national average. The Naperville model has proven so popular that contingents from 42 states and 11 foreign countries have visited the district to learn about the program and how they can replicate it in their home communities. It’s time for Colorado school and community leaders to take a look at Naperville, and other model schools, and make the decision to implement similar programs here in the Centennial state. Our kids deserve it.

John Fox is a Bronco and only a Bronco By Woody Paige

ohn Fox will finish his coaching career with the Broncos.

One way or the other. As we sat at a picnic table at Dove Valley one recent day after practice, he, not I, brought up the subject of retirement. “This is my last stop,” the head coach said.

Uh, I wasn’t prepared for the statement, and really don’t know how to respond. The matter hadn’t been broached before publicly. I was talking to Fox about the fact that he had beaten two of his former NFL teams – the Steelers and the Chargers – this season and had an opportunity to cross off another former employer – the Panthers. “Don’t forget the Raiders,” he laughed. Oh, yes, the Raiders (from whom he walked away in training camp once). Fox would, in fact, beat the Panthers and, for a second time, the Chargers. He can make it a 5-0 clean sweep Dec. 6 in Oakland. Sort of. There is one other NFL team Fox coached for – the Giants, as a defensive coordinator. But the Broncos and the Giants only can play in the Super Bowl (which also would bring together the Flying Manning Bros.). The Broncos have

a rightful chance to get to New Orleans, but the Giants will need a strong closing act in December to duplicate last season’s achievement. Anyway, I joked to Fox: “Too bad you don’t have Kansas and Iowa State on the schedule, too.” Fox was a vagabond for his career (in five decades) before settling in Carolina in 2002. For a while, he believed that would be his final destination in football. However, that belief evaporated when owner Jerry Richardson surprisingly, and stupidly, blew up the franchise after Fox coached the Panthers to a 12-4 record in 2008. The next year, Fox became a dead coach walking. Life has a way of working out, though, for Fox. He ended up with the Broncos in 2010 and had John Elway on one hand and, in 2011, Peyton Manning on the other. And here he seeks to end up his coaching. He is a happy man. It took a while after his coast-to-coast excursion through college and pro football. Practically nobody remembers – there isn’t a mention in most of his bios – that Fox got his start as a 24-year-old assistant (under famed coach Sid Gilman) at U.S. International University in San Diego in 1979. (Fox had been an unpaid graduate assistant at San Diego State, where he played as a defensive back, in 1978 in his hometown.)

Then, the nomadic life began: Boise State, Long Beach State, Utah, Kansas and Iowa State, five schools in five years; Los Angeles Express in the USFL for a season; University of Pittsburgh as a coordinator for the first time; Steelers, Chargers and Raiders (where he quit in preseason his second year because he just didn’t get along with Al Davis). Fox served as a personnel consultant with the Rams in 1996 before being hired to run the Giants’ defense from 1997-2001 (and made it to the Super Bowl once). He was named the head coach of the Panthers, reached a second Super Bowl (and lost again), was shoved out and landed softly with the Broncos in 2010. (He initially planned to take off the entire season.) He’s held positions with 16 different college and pro teams in 32 years (do the math). “I’ve found a home. I was born in the East and was a coach with Carolina, but I’ve always really been a Western guy, and I’m very fortunate to be in Denver. Who could want a better situation?”

That’s when he brought up the “last stop.” Fox hasn’t talked about it before, so Mile High Sports Magazine has the scoop. “I’m 57, and I don’t want to be coaching forever. I can’t see myself coaching well into my 60s, so this is it.” But there’s one remaining objective for Fox: Winning a Super Bowl. It took Elway 15 years into his playing career before he won a Super Bowl. Fox lost the game twice, Elway three times. Elway would like his third ring, Manning his second and Fox at least one. There is, though, the other side. If they don’t win a Super Bowl this season or next, or the next, or perhaps the next, this also will their final stop, and a new quarterback, a new coach and a new executive vice president would take over. But Manning, Elway and Fox strive to ride off together from the Broncos and the NFL as champions.
