Yvette Lewis leads this class for 3-5 year olds, introducing them to the concept of a singing story. Students will work in depth with the story of The Gingerbread Man, including learning the story and songs, working with mime, gingerbread crafts and a performance during the final class. This fun and stimulating class for students in the 6th to 8th grades teaches the technical skills of drawing and cartooning with subject matter drawn from the news and social issues. Beginning with a discussion of events and situations that impact and interest young people, such as Facebook, cell phones, global warming and bullying, the class leads to finished cartoons which reflect the students’ often humorous takes on these relevant issues. Taught by Michael Cotter, cartoonist and Artistic Director of Blue Sky Puppet Theatre. All skill levels welcome. Tuition $90 (Stars Price $81)

For Adults In-Depth Jazz Singing Session I: Talkin’ to the Band

Jazz Choir Mondays, October 4, 11, 18, 25, November 1, 8, 15, 22 7:30–9:30PM MANSION, SHAPIRO MUSIC ROOM

Howard University professor Connaitre Miller brings a new class to Strathmore’s expanding jazz class offerings. Participants will learn to sing in the style of The Manhattan Transfer, The New York Voices and Take 6 to name a few. Attention will be given to different styles of jazz, ear-training for jazz harmonies, blending and balance and incorporating jazz solo singing. The class culminates in an informal performance with a three piece rhythm section. Some choral music background and ability to read music is helpful. Tuition $175 for 8 sessions (Stars Price $157.50)

The first of three in-depth sessions on solo jazz singing scheduled this season: work with outstanding local jazz vocalist and former Artist in Residence Lena Seikaly to learn the necessary vocabulary and gestures needed to communicate with the rhythm section when you perform. Music and Singing Classes

Past participants in Strathmore’s singing classes have requested this new course—and here it is! Instructor Aniko Debreceny, a music educator with an extensive background in teaching these skills, leads students through techniques to make their singing easier and more accurate. Students will learn how to sing in parts and other languages (pronunciation guides provided), using solfa/solfege, numbers, letter names and rhythms. Designed for adults and advanced high school students who have a basic foundation in musical notation and who want to advance their sight-singing skills. Tuition $135 for 4 sessions (Stars Price $121.50)

Jessica Boykin-Settles, jazz singer and Howard University music professor, will lead this season’s sessions of this popular class, introducing participants to elements of jazz rhythm, harmony and improvisation. The class will conclude with a cabaret performance with a full rhythm section. Tuition $275 for 6 sessions (Stars Price $247.50)

Music Concerts & Lectures Art Songs: Chamber Music with Words Tuesdays, September 14– December 7 7–9PM MANSION AT STRATHMORE

Co-presented with FAES Graduate School at NIH

Explore the art song as chamber music with distinguished area music faculty members and composers/ performers. The series covers European and American repertoire from the classical period to the 20th century. In each session, the songs will be performed live in the original languages, both as examples during the lectures and as an uninterrupted performance after the lecture. Lectures will discuss the lives and times of the composers and poets, as well as the particular songs. Listeners will learn to hear and appreciate the interplay between voice and piano, differences between musical styles, and the relationship between music and text. A learning adventure for music lovers! Patrons may take this course for credit, please discuss with instructor on first day of class. Tuition $290 for 14 sessions (Stars Price $261)

A Celebration of the Guitar in America

This lecture/concert with outstanding guitarist and educator, Phil Mathieu, is the opening education event for Strathmore’s yearlong Guitar Festival. This program traces the Phil Mathieu development of the instrument by featuring the music and history of iconic guitarists William Foden, “Libba” Cotton, Chet Adkins, Les Paul and Charlie Byrd, who were influential in the development of American classical and popular styles. A variety of instruments will be discussed and used to demonstrate the different styles. Tuition $15 (Stars Price $13.50)

Mosaic Stepping Stones

Enjoy a 90-minute multi-media presentation on the unique style of tenor saxophonist Lester Young and his Lester Young influence on modern jazz. Well-known local jazz musician and band leader Brad Linde shares fascinating biographical information, musical examples and transcriptions, performance of classic solos and interviews with musicians who knew Young and were inspired by his melodic approach to improvising. Every jazz fan knows that Washington is the home town of Duke Ellington. But DC has also been home for numerous other jazz greats and the location of many historic clubs and dance halls. WPFW 89.3’s Rusty Hassan has been a part of Washington’s jazz scene for over 40 years. Join Rusty for an insider’s look at the golden era of jazz in Washington as he shares the lore of the Howard Theatre, Bohemian Caverns and One Step Down and the music of Duke Ellington, Shirley Horn and Buck Hill. In this three-session workshop, led by Hilary Sloate, students are introduced to the basics of mosaic: materials, tools, techniques, cutting, adhesion, grouting and history. Each student will create their own design, and then complete a 12-inch square, allweather stepping stone to beautify any yard, flower bed or garden area! Workshop focus will include design, methods, materials, laying techniques and finishing/grouting. This class is perfect for students looking for a thorough introduction to the art of mosaic! Learn the intricacies of this beautiful technique and leave with a finished scarf! Freedom in Expression— Creating New Designs on Paper

Professional artist and educator Karen O. Brown teaches an in-depth approach to bookmaking including emphasis on one page structures, folded papers, accordions, pop-up design and overall layout. Over three intensive sessions, create a one-of-akind book or journal while gaining a multitude of mixed media skills. Brown, and learn the art of making paste papers; quick embossing; the use of rubbing plates, dotters and resist; as well as new ways to use watercolor and acrylic paint. Select from a small votive candle holder, a small dish, a medium square plate, a large candle guard or a hanging glass panel. Learn the basics of working in fused glass while exploring design techniques using a variety of textures and colors of ground, pulled, or sheet glass. Literary Arts Stories from the Attic Writing Workshop MONDAYS, November 15, 22, 29 11AM–12:30PM MANSION, CONFERENCE ROOM

Lynn Stearns of The Writer’s Center of Bethesda guides participants through the process of putting those priceless family stories on paper. Participants will discuss elements of writing (such as voice, point of view, language, dialogue, setting, structure, plot, pacing and resolution) and do brief exercises to reinforce each element, with a focus on creating compelling storylines. Each participant will also have opportunities to have work critiqued over the course of the class. Tuition $75 for 3 sessions (Stars Price $67.50)

Parking

Parking for events in the Mansion is complimentary in the Mansion lot; enter at 10701 Rockville Pike. Parking for events in the Music Center is at the paid meters along Tuckerman Lane or in the Grosvenor-Strathmore Metro Garage, adjacent to the Music Center. Payment in the Metro garage (via Metro SmarTrip card only) is required Monday through Friday and is currently $4.75.

Cancellation Policy

Strathmore reserves the right to cancel any of our education programs that do not meet the minimum enrollment up to 7 days prior to the start of the class.

Refund Policy

For single-event classes, workshops, lectures or other education programs: • All tuition payments are final and non-refundable. • Students may transfer to another single-event education program for an exchange fee of $5 and will pay the difference in the price of tuition if applicable. • If a single-event education program is cancelled or postponed a full refund of the tuition cost will be available through the ticket office for 30 days after the original scheduled date. For multiple session Education classes or workshops : • Withdrawal up to seven days prior to the start of the class will result in a full refund. • After the first class, 50% of the cost of tuition will be refunded. Supply fees not included. • No refunds will be granted after the second session.
