A little Wii Bowling aside, grandma hasn’t been spending much time gaming in the basement. And clearing his schedule for a performance at Strathmore may not have been Junior’s top priority. But that was before Video Games Live came to town. A guest orchestra, in this case featuring Strathmore’s resident partner National Philharmonic, performs pieces originally composed for video games in an intense, interactive, immersive video/audio/ live action spectacle that takes the audience inside the games. Audience members are encouraged to dress as video game characters and can arrive early to mingle with fellow gamers and play some of their favorites. “Video Games Live is all the greatest video game music of all time, completely synchronized with the biggest visuals you can imagine. It’s all the power and emotion of a rock concert, the cutting edge visuals, the cultural significance of the symphony and the fun of video games all at once!” exclaims producer and creator Tommy Tallarico.

Tallarico hopes that Video Games Live will bring young people and families to the experience of live orchestral music, as well as showcase a realm of contemporary composition that is unknown to many fans of symphonic music. “I’ve seen members of the orchestra, too, who suddenly realize this is really good music. They experience the show, have hundreds of people screaming and clapping for them. Someone will come up to me and say ‘I’ve been playing professional oboe for 40 years, and tonight I feel like a rock star!’” l

Tallarico recounts his experience as a child seeing Star Wars, being inspired by the score, and learning about its composer John Williams. In exploring Williams’ influences, he encountered Beethoven for the first time. “That was it,” Tallarico says with finality, “I knew I wanted to be a composer.” Rather than follow in Williams’ footsteps to score films, Tallarico pursued his passion for gaming and began composing the music that sets the mood for many of today’s most popular games.

Ingrid Fliter Debuts with the BSO in Chopin’s Second Piano Concerto On Saturday, February 19, 2011 the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra welcomes Argentine pianist Ingrid Fliter performing Chopin’s Second Piano Concerto. Hailed by The New York Times as “a real talent,” Ms. Fliter is the fifth pianist ever to be awarded the prestigious Gilmore Artist Award. Sight Singing Made Simple SUNDAYS, JANUARY 9, 16, 23 & 30, 4PM–5:30PM Past participants in Strathmore’s singing classes have requested this new course—and here it is! Instructor Aniko Debreceny has an extensive background in bringing out the best in her students by focusing on techniques to make their singing easier and more accurate. She focuses on how to sing in parts and other languages using solfa/solfege, numbers, letter names and rhythms. Those benefiting the most include adults and advanced high school students who have a basic foundation in musical notation and who want to advance their sightsinging skills. For the first time ever, Strathmore opened its main floor to general admission seating to allow for standing and dancing at Chuck Brown’s recent Go-Go concert on October 30. Opening was Strathmore’s very own Artist in Residence alumnus, Christylez Bacon. Looks like we’re going to have to do it again soon!

For the convenience of Music Center patrons, there is a passenger drop-off and pick-up area, and valet available ($15), in the Circle Plaza at 5301 Tuckerman Lane.
