Vocal Jazz Intensive: It’s Not Just the Melody Saturday, April 23, 10AM–3PM Mansion, Shapiro Music Room

So You Think You Can’t Sing—Harmony Edition Tuesdays, MAY 24–JUNE 14, 7:30-9PM Mansion, Shapiro Music Room

From John Horman, the leader of our popular “So You Think You Can’t Sing” workshops, comes this class that guides singers through the basics of part-singing, rounds and harmonizing in a group. Students will also gain additional skills in rhythm and score reading to increase musical independence, as well as get an introduction using improvisation to create instant harmonies. Tuition $135 for 4 sessions (Stars price $121.50)

This workshop is inspired by the Betty Carter album It’s Not About the Melody. Students will learn the basics of “playing with” the melodies of vocal jazz standards, which is an initial step in personalizing the song and truly making it their own. Lena will help participants add “little tinkerings,” such as leaving space within the melody, giving emphasis to certain words and using an awareness of harmony to change the notes of the melody. With these skills and others learned, students will soon master the ability to embellish and improvise those jazz standards known so well. Tuition $60 (Stars price $54)

Saturday, June 11, 10AM–3PM Mansion, Shapiro Music Room

Enjoy the freedom of this iconic style of singing! Two big things required of any scatter are a strong ear and confidence. Lena will help attendees hone those skills during this class, with the goal of having participants to be able scat for the duration of a 12-measure blues form and walk out with a newfound sensibility about scat-singing. Students will gain confidence and techniques by learning how to choose scat syllables, creatively use motifs and “licks” and strategically leave space in a vocal line. Tuition $60 (Stars price $54)
