IT’S ALL MADE UP & THE POIN By Michelle Davis
It all sounds like an anxiety-fueled nightmare. You find yourself on a theater stage, in front of a packed, eager audience. As the glaring spotlight turns on, you realize with sudden horror that you have no performance prepared and nothing on but your boxers. For celebrated improv comedians Colin Mochrie and Brad Sherwood, this is an ordinary night on tour. Well ok, maybe not the boxers part. They are usually wearing pants. But when they hit the stage for a night of rollicking entertainment, all they have prepped are some game ideas and audience prompts. The rest is made up as they go along. It’s a different show every night, and it is consistently, uproariously hilarious. “We find that we work best in panic mode,” says Mochrie. “We have worked to ensure that we are always outside of our comfort zone, so there is no way to plan anything or repeat what we have done before.” Improv fans will recognize the duo from their time on the Emmy-nominated TV show, Whose Line Is It Anyway? For the past 16 years, they have taken their comedy show on the road, performing Whose Line-style skits and songs in front of a live audience. StrathmoreNews chatted with Mochrie and Sherwood to learn the secret to their longevity and hilarity. SN: What was the impetus for that original tour? Brad: The impetus for the tour was to travel the globe, bringing laughter to all. As for Colin’s impetus, he is taking some pills that seem to be working fine. Colin: We started touring together basically because we are stage hogs and didn’t want to share the adulation. Brad had the idea for a two-man improv show, and I didn’t have the heart to say no.

SN: You clearly have a special chemistry. How would you each describe the other’s strengths? Brad: Describing Colin’s strengths would get too close to paying him a compliment, which makes me uncomfortable. Let’s just call him “amusing” and leave it at that. Colin: I am fine complimenting Brad because it is rarely done, and I need to practice. Brad excels at verbal games and making sense out of the nonsense we come up with. I tend to be more physical and random, so we complement each other nicely. SN: How is performing improv on stage different than performing on television? Do you feel freer without the potential of network censorship? Brad: Network censorship is a small price to pay to get to be a professional goofball. I don’t care if a censor occasionally destroys the “artistic integrity” of one of my hoedowns. Colin: On stage we have the luxury of taking as long as we want. Some of our scenes can go 15 to 20 minutes. There is freedom by not having a censor and trying to figure out what they deem objectionable, but we tend to be family-friendly, anyway. SN: Do you have any special preshow rituals to get you pumped and ready for a great performance? Brad: No. The fear of walking on stage with nothing planned is all you need to get pumped up. (And of course, Colin has pills for his impetus.) Colin: I shave Brad’s back and write possible oneliners for him to use. SN: Any tips for audience members who are particularly eager to participate? Have you ever had an audience volunteer that seemed intent on sabotaging a performance? Brad: Let’s just say, on very rare occasions, we’ve had audience volunteers that somehow made the rest of the audience wish that a dragon might fly through the theater and eat them.
Whose Line Is It Anyway? stars Colin Mochrie & Brad Sherwood bring improv antics to Strathmore.
NTS DON’T MATTER… Colin: We tend not to pick people who are jumping up and down and waving their hands; it seems like they’re hoping for a chance to audition. We’ve been fairly lucky with volunteers . . . the few that do sabotage the scene we offer up as human sacrifices. SN: Have your skills as masters of improv come in handy offstage? Brad: Well, first, it has caused some people to refer to us as “masters of improv” which is pretty cool. . . but it may not lead to our own comic book. Colin: I think our improv skills help us at least try to see other people’s points of view. The main rule of improv is “yes, and” which means you have to accept someone’s idea and build on it. All within reason, of course. It’s amazing how much easier it is to say “no” to something rather than say “yes” and see it lead to something amazing. SN: You have both mentioned in previous interviews that getting a laugh is “addictive.” Like other addicts, do you think you’ve built up something of a tolerance where it takes more to feel that same “high?” Brad: I am so addicted to getting laughs that I even do embarrassing shopping cart dances in the grocery store to amuse my wife. I hope that I never build up a tolerance to the thrill of making people laugh. There is nothing else like it. Colin: You never build up a tolerance because you’re never 100 percent sure you’re going to get the laugh. So when the laugh does come, it’s always an immediate high. Also, I have too much dignity to do shopping cart dances.
Colin Mochrie and Brad Sherwood engage in the perilous art of live improv comedy.
