BEST SEATS IN THE HOUSE
With renowned acoustics and great sightlines all around, you can’t go wrong choosing a seat in the Music Center. Even so, we all have our favorites. Get the inside scoop from a few Strathmore insiders.
Pablo de Oliveira Grassroots Marketing & Partnerships Manager
I like Promenade Center Boxes in the middle of the Concert Hall. Acoustically, they’re fantastic, and you also get a good view of the entire stage.
Jonathon Hampton Social Media & Content Manager
I like to watch how fellow conductors interpret music with their gestures and faces. I enjoy seeing how that translates to sound, particularly for choruses and orchestras, so I go for seats in the Choral Tier, surrounding the stage from above, whenever they’re made available. Otherwise, the closest seats with a side view of directors are Boxes 1–4
Erin Phillips Director of Donor Engagement
I’m an aisle gal so my favorite seat is Orchestra Tier Center Row AA 114 I love being on the floor level yet far enough back that you can take in the entire stage. Bonus—being in the front row of the section means you don’t have to worry about an NBA player in front of you—yes, it can happen!
Monica Jeffries Hazangeles President and CEO
The best seat in the house is the one you occupy! One of my favorite things about our Concert Hall (aside from the remarkable acoustics!) is that, from every seat, you have a great view of the artists on stage and the faces of your fellow audience members. We want you to notice one another’s emotions and to experience the performance together. Experiencing the arts together connects us all in a personal and transformative way.

LIVE LAWN from the
The tradition returns with a fresh lineup of summer sounds.
by Alistair Coleman
Each summer, Strathmore welcomes thousands of our neighbors for free outdoor concerts at the Gudelsky Gazebo stage. Dating back to the 1980s, the series has become a summer tradition for generations of families and friends who come together to soak in the sounds amid the cool evening breeze.
“At Strathmore, we’re dedicated to engaging the full diversity of our community. My approach to booking this free concert series is to hit as many genres as I can,” says Beth Radovsky, senior program event manager at Strathmore. “This summer, there are so many great artists to be excited about from the worlds of global music, folk and bluegrass, blues, funk, and more.”
Last year, Strathmore introduced a Live from the Lawn companion series on Thursday nights called Cool Concerts for Kids. “Our children’s concerts are going to be extra special this summer,” says Radovsky, “including Grammy-winners Falu and Dan and Claudia Zanes, our favorite Mexican songstress Sonia De Los Santos, and a dance party with Fyütch.” These upbeat, interactive performances invite kids to be front
and center, and they are a fun way for the whole family to spend a summer night.
To round out the outdoor experience, Strathmore Culinary Arts is serving up a menu of summer BBQ favorites and ice cold drinks. Patrons can also purchase freshly cut fruit, cotton candy, popcorn, and more.
“Strathmore is here to ensure that every one of our neighbors gets to experience the thrill of live performance. Live from the Lawn is one of our favorite ways to deliver on that promise,” says Radovsky.

AMPLIFY-ING ARTISTIC VOICES
New residency supports the creative process for working artists.
by Mary Murdock
This winter, Strathmore launched a new intensive residency program to further the mission of nourishing and showcasing distinctive and diverse artistic voices from across the cultural landscape. The initiative, called AMPlify, is focused on growth and creation over performance, and it provides artists with resources and connections to help them bring their work and vision to the next level. Tailoring the offerings of the program to each individual it supports, AMPlify provides the compensation, rehearsal space, and partnerships that
professional artists need to dedicate time and energy to the creative process.
The customized multi-day program takes place at AMP, Strathmore’s lounge-style venue in North Bethesda’s Pike & Rose neighborhood. AMP and the surrounding community offer a unique setting for artists to live and work for their multiday residency, with ample food and beverage options nearby and a brightly lit, professionally equipped rehearsal and performance space.
12 STRATHMORE NEWS | Summer 2023
Jim Saah
ARTIST IN RESIDENCE MIHO HAZAMA
AMPlify’s first artist in residence was Miho Hazama, a Grammy-nominated composer and leader of the jazz chamber orchestra m_unit. Based in New York, time and space reserved solely for the creative process is a rare luxury for Hazama, and something she has never had to the extent that she did during this experience. Hazama used the three-day residency to rehearse for an upcoming recording project with her 13-piece chamber orchestra.
“There were a few pieces that we had played before, but we never had time to really look into them before AMPlify,” says Hazama. “Rehearsing certain phrases over and over again is something that we really need to do because my music is sometimes quite complex. Making musicians realize what role they play in the ensemble is also very important to my music, and we all were able to work on that during my residency.”
STRATHMORE INVESTS IN WORKING ARTISTS
AMPlify is Strathmore’s second artist residency program, following the Strathmore Artist in Residence (AIR) program that has supported more than 100 artists since 2005. AIR is a yearlong mentorship program that helps emerging artists hone their professional and creative identities at the beginning of their careers. By contrast, “AMPlify is a more expanded concept,” says Joi Brown, Strathmore’s artistic director and vice president of programming. “The initiative focuses on supporting artists who are already working professionally and creating content but don’t have enough resources to spend on pure creation.”
AMPlify has helped to advance Strathmore’s relationships with working artists into something that is more supportive than transactional. “Artists need time to find their voice and create, without the expectation that there is a certain outcome,” says Brown. AMPlify is a way to move resources into the creation of new work as it’s happening, rather than only presenting the finished product. In this way, AMPlify invests in continuing relationships with working artists throughout their careers.
Strathmore looks forward to continuing this new residency with more artists in the near future and is already engaged in conversations with artists and their representatives to match their needs with the resources that AMP by Strathmore is able to provide. Through AMPlify, Strathmore has expanded its ability to support artists at all stages of development, from their first childhood music lesson to their first solo performance and well into their professional careers.

STRUM ALONG AT STRATHMORE’S
by Maya Lee
Celebrating 15 years of building skills— and community!
Strathmore’s UkeFest, an immersive musical experience that brings together more than 100 ukulele players annually, returns to the Music Center in August for its 15th anniversary. Founded by Artistic Directors Cathy Fink and Marcy Marxer, the first UkeFest was simply a concert on the lawn with renowned musician and educator James Hill. An integral player in the festival’s history, Hill will once again be teaching several classes and cohosting ukulele teacher training and master classes with Fink and Marxer.
“Cathy and Marcy, who are masterful ukulele players and instructors themselves, always curate an amazing lineup of instructors for UkeFest selected for their elite skills,” says Beth Radovsky, Strathmore’s senior program event manager and UkeFest organizer. This year’s UkeFest features talent from across the globe, including multi-award-winning instrumentalist Brittni Paiva, renowned ukulele and harmonica player Lil Rev, Canadian Folk Music Award nominee Eve Goldberg, and cavaco player, singer, and percussionist Pablo Regis.
Some UkeFest fans have been coming to the festival since the very beginning. “It has been a joy to take these classes from [instructors] who teach the types of music I love to play,” says Robb Mapou, who first attended UkeFest in 2012. “I am involved with James Hill’s UkeHeads recording project and look forward to learning from him this year.”

The annual festival, designed for newbie and experienced ukulele players alike, offers a variety of classes and opportunities for jam sessions, so all participants leave better musicians than when they arrived.
“The ukulele is the rare instrument that allows everyone to play together no matter their skill level,” says Fink. “It embodies the spirit of community.”
Of course, fostering a creative community—along with education and excellence in the arts—has always been a priority for Strathmore and one reason behind its 15-year commitment to UkeFest and ongoing ukulele programming. “The partnership between Strathmore and the Ukefest faculty and creative team is amazing,” says Fink. “I see this going on for a long time.”
TIME IS RUNNING OUT!
New annual fund gifts to Strathmore can now be doubled—but only through June 30, 2023.
The Morris and Gwendolyn Cafritz Foundation has generously offered a grant to encourage community members like you to make your first gift by matching it, dollar for dollar, up to a total of $10,000.
Strathmore must raise $10,000 to receive this matching grant, and we are so close thanks to the generosity of arts-loving patrons like you!
Your donation will ensure that high-quality artists remain onstage at Strathmore and that everyone in our community can access them.
Gifts of all sizes make a difference. Thank you!

Maryland Classic Youth Orchestras
Students spend a week dedicated to honing their craft and creating beautiful music. by
Holly Filipiak
Each summer, Maryland Classic Youth Orchestras (MCYO) leads a weeklong camp for young violin, viola, cello, and bass players. Through a series of sessions covering topics such as music history, theory, and sightreading, along with orchestra and chamber ensemble rehearsals, these up-and-coming virtuosos spend the week surrounded by all things strings.
Summer Strings Week Music Director Jorge Orozco regularly conducts two MCYO ensembles and is an accomplished violinist who actively performs around the DMV. He is joined by a dedicated faculty of musicians who lead students through their workshops and rehearsals. Students are divided into Junior (rising grades three through six) and Senior (rising grades six through eight) groups and are provided with instruction and development according to their skill level.
The MCYO All-Star String Institute (ASSI) for invited high school musicians will happen concurrently, led by MCYO Artistic Director and Philharmonic Conductor Kristofer Sanz. ASSI is an opportunity for a select number of the area’s most talented string musicians
to come together to rehearse and perform challenging string orchestra repertoire in a highly collaborative and passionate environment. This program for experienced performers provides older string students with a sense of community and deep musical relationships.

DO YOU WORK FOR A MATCHMAKER?
Make the most out of your workplace giving
What do GEICO, Pepco, and Washington Gas all have in common?
Matching Gift Programs!
Corporate matching gifts are a type of philanthropy in which companies financially match donations that their employees make to nonprofit organizations—some match retirees, spouses, and part-time employees too!
Each company has individual guidelines for matching donations. Often, after an employee donates, they need to request the matching gift from their employer who then makes their own donation.
We can help make the process easy:
1) Scan the QR code or visit strathmore.org/match
2) Enter your employer’s name to instantly find out if your gift will be doubled.
3) Access your employer’s matching gift form, guidelines, and apply.
No results? Your company may still have a matching program. Contact your HR department to find out; you don’t want to leave money on the table!
Take advantage of your workplace benefits and feel good knowing that your gift ensures that the arts remain vibrant and accessible to all. Thank you!
An estimated $4–$7 BILLION in matching gift funds goes unclaimed per year.
“It feels like I’m giving twice as much when I submit for a matching gift. And I love that I get to extend my impact by directing some of my employer’s donations toward the programs I consider most valuable.”
—Francis Luong (Franco), member since 2017 facilitating over $3,000 in matching gifts
Over 18 MILLION individuals work for companies with matching gift programs.
