Kevin Moore has got the blues. That’s what everyone says, anyway, but the artist who goes by the nickname Keb’ Mo’ says there’s a lot more to it than that.
Keb’ Mo’ Thursday, September 15 8PM Music Center Tickets $38–$58 (Stars Price $34.20–$52.20)
l
“I’m basically a songwriter, though I’ve been pegged as a ‘blues guy,’” he says. “Yes, the blues informs the whole process for me, but blues is such a small part of what I do and a big part of how people perceive me.” It is, however, a big part of why he’s here during a year when Strathmore is showcasing American composers, the blues and Keb’s penchant for bringing diverse elements together to create music that’s representational.
and a focus on contemporary R&B as well as the plaintive, bluesy vibe that underscores everything. “I have a record out that’s R&B, Steely Dan, gospel—even disco,” he explains. “Let the record state that I’m an Americana artist.” It’s a statement of identity that Keb asserts easily, but it’s been a long time coming. “For 15 years I was a sideman just playing with bands, just wanting to perform” he says. “I didn’t have a musical identity. One day I discovered the blues—it had been calling to me my whole life, and one day I heard it. It changed my whole perspective about music and what I was supposed to do.”
“In music those twelve notes have been done every way by now,” he says. “We’re all informed by what we’ve heard; the challenge is to mix it all together and come up with something original.”
And as an artist, Keb’ says perspective is what it’s all about.
That’s why a Keb’ Mo’ concert, like the one taking place in the Music Center on September 15, features a great deal of acoustic music, slide guitar,
“Whether someone stands before a painting or a live performance of music,” he says, “they’re experiencing (the artist’s) truth, or lack thereof. The audience is smart; they know if someone is communicating in an authentic way.” Which is why Keb’ takes his role as a composer and songwriter so seriously: “When you put the pen to paper, you have to tell the truth.” It’s why, despite his embrace of a variety of American musical forms and his commitment to the storyteller’s art, he admits that in the end it really is about the blues.

“The blues is so honest and real—there’s no hiding,” he explains. “And I don’t want to hide.”
“Let the record state that I’m an Americana artist.” ~Keb’ Mo’

Charles Ives: To Live Deliberately vision. He made no concessions; that was how he lived his life, pursued his profession, and created his music. “Everything he composed, he composed vividly.”
MSS 14, The Charles Ives Papers in the Irving S. Gilmore Music Library of Yale University. Photographer: Halley Erskine
And everything he composed touched upon the distinctly American life to which he was born. Ives was the son of a Civil War veteran; his father George was a U.S. Army bandleader and Charles Ives grew up listening to marching bands in the Danbury, CT Square. He was also influenced by the sacred music that defined his time and place in history; he became a church organist at 14—and played on his local baseball team, too.
Most men live lives of quiet desperation, said Henry David Thoreau. But not Charles Ives. Ives (1874–1954) was an American composer— Connecticut-born, Yale-educated, highly successful as a businessman and family man, and largely unknown for his music until after he died. Most folks have barely heard of him, and yet for American musicians and music historians Ives is The One: iconic, sublime, the greatest composer the New World has yet known.
Horowitz paints a portrait of Ives as an All-American kind of a guy, just as the very idea of “being American” was starting to gel. His music reflected his passions: progressive politics, a classic Yankee-WASP childhood, his relationships with his father (who died relatively young), and his beloved wife—and Transcendentalism, the philosophical construct favored by Thoreau, Ralph Waldo Emerson, Walt Whitman, Emily Dickinson, Bronson Alcott and other artists, poets and philosophers. And when the time came in the 1950s to anoint a distinctly American composer, it was the work of Ives that inspired the likes of Leonard Bernstein and set in motion a slow but steady re-evaluation of Ives-as-icon. Joseph Horowitz
Really? Joseph Horowitz, artistic director of Post Classical Ensemble as well as a cultural historian, says that Ives’ compositions hold a mirror up to the American experience. “His life is heroic,” says Horowitz. “Not only did he endure adversity, he didn’t allow it to corrupt his
