Sing Out, Sutton turning point in my dreams about being onstage professionally. I remember thinking: ‘I wanna do that! I wanna do THAT!’ SN: What about your roles? Which ones are favorites? SF: As a show, as a whole, as an experience: The Drowsy Chaperone. That was great. The most challenging, though, was Anything Goes. It became, like, this incredible journey: just to be able to sing all those songs. I’m a big Patti LuPone fan—a superfan! And, I was so intimidated. The idea of following in her footsteps was freaking me out!

DON’T MISS IT! Sutton Foster

Strathmore News recently chatted with the Broadway baby (and former “Bunhead”) to catch up on life, career and her upcoming Music Center performance on October 12.

Strathmore News: You just finished the television show Bunheads, but you’re probably best known for your expansive career on Broadway…

SATURDAY, OCTOBER 12, 8PM Music Center Tickets $26–$78 (Stars $23.40–$70.20)

Sutton Foster: I did one season of the show and I’m probably more recognized for that—I guess because I’m in people’s living rooms! A lot of people saw me on Bunheads and have no idea that I’ve been on Broadway.

Sponsored by

SN: What are some of your favorite Broadway shows? SF: Well I think my favorite musical of all time is Sweeney Todd. When I went to college—I only went for one year, to Carnegie-Mellon—the seniors did Sweeney Todd and I think I saw it five times—and then I saw the revival with Patti LuPone…horror and heart and love—so unexpected—plus the perfect score. I love it. And, you know, Me and My Girl—the national tour came through Detroit when I was 15 and it was a huge

SN: You’ve also released a studio album, Wish, and a live album, too (An Evening with Sutton Foster, Live at the Café Carlyle). Tell us about your recording career. SF: We’re actually working on a third album with Michael Rafter, musical director on Thoroughly Modern Millie. We work so well together; we have this unspoken bond, and he and I have been collecting music for the last year. It’s an interesting process. You don’t want to rush anything, you want it to feel organic...just trying new material, figuring out what we want to record. It’s all very selective— we pour through hundreds and hundreds of songs, ranging from standards, American Songbook, trunk songs, pop songs and new stuff written just for me. We’re delving into what feels right. SN: And what feels right for your Strathmore debut? SF: Well, we’ve been performing concerts now for about a year across the country, and it keeps evolving. We have a program and we tend to change it up depending on the venue. We have such a great collection we’re pulling from, and we’re so excited to be at Strathmore. It’ll be fun!

Calligraphy characters, Lesser explains, started off as little paintings before evolving into alphabetical symbols. With A Fine Line: Calligraphy, Language & Symbol, artists do more than just put the writing on the wall—they actually push the calligraphic envelope. “We have calligraphers who are using the English alphabet,” says Lesser. “They’re making calligraphy personal, original; taking it further and going to the edge.” Well-known
