THIS JUST IN!
The songs, the stories, the sidemen . . . don’t miss a single note of
Strathmore’s season-long festival celebrates the blues.
Strathmore’s Shades of Blues festival is a carefully curated, season-long exploration dedicated to sharing the blues with everyone. Strathmore believes in the power of art to heal and lift us up from life’s difficulties, and nothing does that better than the blues. As Wynton Marsalis said, “blues never lets tragedy have the last word.” This uniquely American music sprang from humble beginnings and muddy waters to rise into a genre spanning geographic regions and linking historical eras. Though the blues is too vast a subject to cover comprehensively, we’re proud to present this wideranging and robust exploration. From the Music Center and AMP stages to the Mansion Music Room and beyond, we’re exploring the birth and evolution of this far-reaching art form. This includes everything from teaching the techniques of blues guitar with Samuel James and blues singing with Brianna Thomas to screening two new documentaries—Sidemen: Long Road to Glory and Anacostia Delta: Home of the Great “Unknown” Guitarists—plus providing musical and historical context to enhance your enjoyment. From presenting Wynton Marsalis’ rarely performed grand opus All Rise in the Music Center to showcasing the dazzling guitar work of blues icon Chris Smither in an intimate performance at AMP, Strathmore is committed to helping you explore the rich landscape of the blues and appreciate it in wonderful new ways.
From Top: Lizz Wright by Jesse Kitt, Music Maker by Tim Duffy, Gerald Clayton, Music Center by Jim Saah, Wynton Marsalis by Joe Martinez
There are countless ways to soak in the blues this season, whether you opt for an in-depth educational event with leading national blues scholars or exciting visual interpretations in art exhibitions Rise Up and La Vie en Bleu. More than just music, Shades of Blues celebrates artistic expression and breaks down barriers.

With Love, from Strathmore’s historic Mansion sets the stage for picture-perfect weddings. By Mary Mendoza Godbout
A
romantic Georgian mansion set high upon a hill, framed by centuries-old trees, a verdant lawn with a stunning gazebo, and an exquisite collection of sculptures. Anyone can tell that this is a place for art, but the Mansion at Strathmore is also a place where couples can marry in a unique and romantic setting. Built in 1899, the Mansion boasts sparkling chandeliers and marble mantels. Its opulent details—from towering Palladian windows down to intricate wood inlay floors—offer a classic elegance that’s hard to replicate in a modern hall. For Brieanne and Justin it was love at first sight; from the moment they visited the Mansion, they were sure they had found the perfect venue for their wedding ceremony and reception. “We loved the intimacy,” the couple explained. “It was wonderful the way people could occupy the dance floor in the Music Room or wander around the Mansion. Everything flowed really nicely.”
To make sure that easy flow extends to the food and drinks at the reception, Strathmore relies on Ridgewells Catering, the DC area’s premier catering company and Strathmore’s exclusive catering partner since July 2015. Ridgewells’ philosophy is to value every detail and make sure each event they cater is an unforgettable affair. With custom-designed menus, fresh farm-to-table cuisine, and personalized service, Ridgewells and Strathmore are commited to making wedding planning a stress-free experience for the bride and groom. “The best thing was how seamless it was,” bride Brieanne said. “They served everyone well and also melted into the background. Everything went smoothly and the food was really good.”

Strathmore Strathmore’s Rentals Manager Madeline Waters couldn’t agree more. “We have a great working relationship with Ridgewells,” she said. “They have a magnificent eye for design, a lot of flexibility, and a very professional staff with creative ideas.” “We work well as a team and it comes across in the details.” That left Brieanne and Justin free to plan their perfect day, and the newlyweds were able to take advantage of every inch of the Mansion for their nuptials. “On the day of your wedding, the Mansion is reserved entirely for your private party,” Waters says.
HOST YOUR NEXT WEDDING, MITZVAH, OR MEETING AT AMP
“This includes not only the Mansion’s interior, but the backyard with its impressive columns, the gazebo, and sculpture garden.”
AMP is a hip, contemporary space in Rockville’s burgeoning Pike & Rose neighborhood. Ideally located near public transportation and major thoroughfares, AMP is the perfect place to celebrate, create, and collaborate.
“We had the ceremony in the gazebo in front of the Mansion,” shares Brieanne. “It was perfect for a grand entrance from the front of the Mansion and down the stairs.” “For the cocktail hour, people gathered in the Mansion’s backyard, which is a really charming area.” “Strathmore is located on 16 acres of grounds,” points out Waters. “It feels far away in an idyllic place, while still convenient to DC with many hotels nearby for out of town wedding guests.” Plus there are many opportunities to return for a concert or exhibition to relive the happy memories of a blissful wedding day.
