“All around the world, people are attracted to the human voice. To its beauty, versatility—and to the strange things it can do,” explains Roger Thomas, musical director of the stunning vocal ensemble Naturally 7. Thomas speaks from experience, having performed worldwide with the group since founding it with brother Warren more than 10 years ago. Naturally 7 regularly opens for international sensation Michael Bublé, while keeping their own demanding tour schedule.

The music of Naturally 7 defies expectations. Their performance style grew from a cappella origins, but developed into what Thomas terms “Vocal Play”—a thoroughly unique sound that meshes rich vocals with intensely realistic instrumentals—all created with the human voice alone. “The human voice is like a fingerprint,” Thomas explains, “and little by little we found each guy has specific instruments that only he can do, the raspy voice of an electric guitar, plucking like a bass or creating the depth of a cello.”

Antonio Canaletto (1697–1770) was the leading practitioner of view painting in Venice in the eighteenth century. While not the initiator of vedute in Venice, his imagination and power of expression brought the genre to a new level. This talk by Dr. Eric Denker of the National Gallery examines the central role Canaletto played in the evolution of the form and his relationship to other painters.

Washington Performing Arts Society presents two acclaimed orchestras this spring. Sir André Previn conducts the NHK Symphony Orchestra of Japan in Prokofiev’s Fifth Symphony on March 16.

They are joined by cellist Daniel Müller-Schott for Elgar’s Cello Concerto. On April 12, former BSO music director Yuri Temirkanov returns to Strathmore with the St. Petersburg Philharmonic and cellist Alisa Weilerstein for a program of Shostakovich, Rimsky-Korsakov, and Brahms’ Fourth Symphony.

The WPAS Piano Masters Series continues with MarcAndré Hamelin performing a diverse program on April 29. Finally, beloved violinist Itzhak Perlman returns to Strathmore on May 1.

Conductor Mario Venzago leads Latvian violinist Baiba Skride in a performance of Alban Berg’s Violin Concerto, an emotionally charged elegy dedicated “to the memory of an angel,” the 18-year-old poliostricken daughter of Alma Mahler.

The Stravinsky Project Aficionados of classical composition will find much to consider (and reconsider) about Stravinsky’s position in the musical pantheon as they delve into the series of events comprising The Stravinsky Project.

During his lifetime, Igor Stravinsky, having been exiled from his Russian homeland, publically defined his music through an aesthetic of objectivity that fundamentally denied a cultural context.

However, as Soviet-trained musicians regained access to his work in the 1990s they reconnected the threads of Russian musical tradition running through his compositions. By reinterpreting Stravinsky as an essentially Russian composer whose exile subverted his musical roots, contemporary musicians and thinkers have provided a substantive rebuttal to Stravinsky’s self-created cosmopolitan modernist/ neo-classicist image.

Stravinsky himself insisted that music is “essentially powerless to express anything at all” and admonished performers not to “interpret” his compositions. Through The Stravinsky Project, the first festival of its kind in our area, audiences and experts come together to challenge Stravinsky’s anti-interpretation stance and to consider his work through the cultural lens he attempted to suppress.

For Music Center Concert Hall performances: For ticketed performances, complimentary parking is available in the adjacent Metro garage—stroll across the covered Sky Bridge directly into the Music Center. For the convenience of Music Center patrons, there is a passenger drop-off and pick-up area and valet available ($15) in the Circle Plaza at 5301 Tuckerman Lane.

Mansion & Galleries Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Friday: 10am–4pm Wednesday: 10am–9pm Saturday: 10am–3pm Admission to the Mansion at Strathmore and galleries is free.

For non-performance Music Center events, including all Education Center events: Metered parking is available on Tuckerman Lane or park in the Metro garage where a SmarTrip card is required for payment Monday–Friday.
