Adam Pascal and Anthony Rapp Look Back on 20 Years of Friendship and Rent. By PJ Feinstein
It was the Hamilton of the MTV generation. Nearly 20 years before Lin-Manuel Miranda revolutionized Broadway with his hip-hop musical about Alexander Hamilton, a little-known composer and lyricist named Jonathan Larson redefined American theater with a rock musical called Rent. A modern retelling of Puccini’s La Boheme, Rent had its Off-Broadway premiere on February 13, 1996. Bolstered by rave reviews (The New York Times described it as an “exhilarating, landmark rock opera” with a “glittering, inventive score”), Larson’s topical musical about a group of young artists in New York
City’s East Village struggling to survive in the shadow of AIDS was quickly promoted to Broadway, where it ran until 2008. “The specific details of the story are actually somewhat incidental to the overall message, which is about love and friends,” said Adam Pascal, who originated the role of the HIV-positive songwriter, Roger. “Those are concepts that cross boundaries of age, time, pop culture, and political landscape.” Pascal believes that Rent transformed Broadway by introducing new types of performers, voices, and music

to the world of musical theater. It was also the first show in a long time accessible to nontraditional theater audiences, thanks in part to its hip, youthful cast and infectious rock-and-pop-influenced soundtrack.
“I foresee us performing together for many years to come.” – Adam Pascal Pascal was one of those “new types of performers,” a rock singer from Long Island who heard about the show from Idina Menzel, a childhood neighbor already cast as the bisexual performance artist Maureen. “The audition process was easy because I had never auditioned for anything before. I had no expectations and no fear. All I had to do was show up and play a song on my guitar.” Once he landed the part, the Broadway newcomer’s biggest challenge was remaining truthful to a character suffering from a life-threatening disease. “There were a lot of people around us at the time who did have AIDS, and I felt a responsibility to them, as well as to Jonathan Larson,” Pascal explained. Larson had died suddenly of an aortic aneurysm the day Rent was to begin previews Off-Broadway and missed the glowing reviews and accolades for his masterwork, which included that year’s Pulitzer Prize and Tony Award.
went on to star in Broadway hits like Aida, Cabaret, Chicago, Memphis, Disaster, and Something Rotten. Rent was also the launching pad for Pascal’s longlasting friendship with Anthony Rapp, who originated the role of Mark, a filmmaker afraid of selling out. Unlike Pascal, Rapp was a veteran actor, having already appeared on Broadway and in movies like Adventures in Babysitting and Dazed and Confused. Last year, when Rent turned 20, the two friends hit the road for Adam & Anthony Live, up-close-and-personal concerts celebrating the groundbreaking musical and their enduring friendship. Backed by a full band, Pascal and Rapp perform solos and duets of their own original music, reimagined Broadway classics, and heartfelt Rent favorites like “Glory” and “What You Own.” Pascal’s set includes songs from Cabaret and Memphis, while Rapp sings numbers from Once and Hedwig and the Angry Inch, among others. “Anthony was—and still is—an extremely conscientious, generous, and intelligent person,” said Pascal of his former Rent co-star. “He continues to be an amazing talent and a good friend, and I foresee us performing together for many years to come.”

Strathmore Children’s Chorus makes music more accessible.

Backstage at the Strathmore Children’s Chorus (SCC) winter concert, there are jitters and giggles but nothing that can’t be chased away by confidence and talent. This December evening, each singer is excited to be on the Music Center stage as proud parents listen and watch.
It certainly offers young singers some unforgettable opportunities. SCC members collaborate with youth music programs like Maryland Classic Youth Orchestras of Strathmore. They learn music from other cultures, sing in different languages, and perform alongside musical icons like The Chieftains and Natalie MacMaster. Jim Saah
“Before the Music Center even existed, we wanted to create a children’s chorus that reflected the diversity of Montgomery County,” says Strathmore CEO Eliot Pfanstiehl. “But we didn’t have the right person to make it a reality.”
“SCC offers an extraordinary experience for young singers,” Guerra says, noting that SCC provides, “scholarships, collaborations with guest artists, and performances on a world-class stage.” “Since no instrument, other than your voice, is required, it makes it possible for students of a wide range of ages to participate,” says Strathmore President Monica Jeffries Hazangeles, explaining how the accessible nature of choral singing makes it a perfect gateway to the arts.

Many SCC families say the program goes beyond teaching young people how to sing.
“Our auditions for the first season started with 12 kids,” recalls Lauren Campbell, Strathmore’s director of education and program director of SCC. “And by the second year we had over 150 singers.”

As a parent, I couldn’t ask for more.” Like other SCC parents, she will be there on June 11 for Celtic Sounds, the chorus’ spring concert, proudly watching the talent on stage and marveling at the incredible confidence, sonorous beauty, and joy.

INNER SPACE Interiors examines art, memory, and design in everyday life. By Chris Slattery
Sometimes a chair is more than a chair—that’s the idea behind Interiors, on exhibition at the Mansion at Strathmore through April 2. Tables, tools, tapestries: this generation of consumers can hyperdesign their home and work space, and every element of living is a potential work of art. It’s a whole new world as artists shift to a new perception of form and function. Part of the switch is the unprecedented availability of previously exotic materials; part of it is an omnipresent technology that spreads ideas and trends with ever-increasing rapidity. Inspired by this, today’s artists are increasingly adding furniture and object design to their portfolios, which excites curator Harriet Lesser. “Our life has changed from previous generations,” says Lesser, “I remember my parents and grandparents going out and buying a suite of furniture, and it was basically all the same. That doesn’t really happen anymore.” Instead, she said, modern consumers are the curators of their own homes, creating spaces that feature furniture and fixtures that can be considered art in their own right. The carefully chosen pieces express the taste and sensibilities of the people who use them, and that’s the concept Lesser showcases in Interiors.
Iconic furniture pieces like the Eames chair and the Noguchi table are, Lesser says, “perfect examples of an artist taking a piece of furniture and applying their aesthetic to it.” But now, she said, “the consumer has come even further.” Featured in the exhibition are woodworker David Knopp and blacksmith Mike Edelman. Knopp and Edelman focus their creativity on familiar and traditional materials and have devised intriguing new forms for wood and metal. Their work redefines the common object, banishes the mass-produced suite of furniture, and elevates the mundane to art. For artist Michael Brolly, furniture is a way to express not just personal taste but history and politics as well. A table of his in the exhibition reflects the heritage of his parents, who emigrated from Ireland, and pulls in elements of the Irish diaspora—famine, exile, and strife—as well as the American historical events that colored his life. “It’s all about the ghosts,” Brolly says. “Most of it is from my life; it’s about memory and what we pass down the table.”
“This is, essentially, about what has happened in the role of art and furniture and individual pieces,” she explains. “It’s about examining how people live, and what they live with.”

For the convenience of Music Center patrons, there is a passenger drop-off and pick-up area and a valet available ($15) in the drop-off circle at 5301 Tuckerman Lane. For nonperformance Music Center events, including all Education Center events: Metered parking is available on Tuckerman Lane, or park in the Metro garage where a SmarTrip or credit card payment of $5.10 is required Monday through Friday.
