Wayne Shorter first found fame as a member of Art Blakey’s Jazz Messengers back in the 1950s. He became Blakey’s primary composer, then joined Miles Davis as part of the Second Great Quartet, and then co-founded the jazz fusion band Weather Report. Wayne Shorter turns 80 this year and he’s still going strong. We talked to trumpeter-composer-arranger-producer David Weiss about Strathmore’s upcoming Tribute to Wayne Shorter. Strathmore News: Why Wayne Shorter? David Weiss: In general he’s one of the most important jazz composers we’ve ever had; definitely the major living composer. He’s had his own journey; he’s an important guy. He wrote music for major bands, and his body of work deserves to be re-examined: it’s a combination of a more adventurous harmony and a melody that still speaks to people. That makes it interesting to expand upon. You know, any great musician has a link to the past—it’s what they do to move it forward that matters. SN: Tell us about the Tribute. DW: There will be two groups performing, and the main act is Wallace Roney (a Miles Davis protégé) and his 23-piece orchestra. He’s performing three works by Wayne Shorter that have never been performed before. These were written for Miles Davis: two large-scale, large-ensemble pieces (“Legend” and “Universe”) written in the ‘50s, and one (“Twin Dragon”) in the ‘80s. That’s the sexy part, the selling point, the main thing: They’re major works for a large ensemble and truly amazing in their scope.

David Weiss

SN: And the second act? DW: That’s my band, the Endangered Species Band. It’s a 12-piece band, and we’ve been doing this for 10 years—paying tribute to the greatest living composer in jazz. We’ll perform music from the Blakey era, through music from The All Seeing Eye and classics from the Miles Davis era (“Fall”), up to his latest compositions from “Alegria” to “High Life.” And we have a CD coming out in August, to celebrate Wayne Shorter’s birthday. SN: This show sound pretty hardcore, who’s going to just love it? DW: It should appeal to the finest of jazz aficionados. Most people view jazz as an improvisational art form, but it’s compositional as well, and there are major composers in jazz: Thelonius Monk, Charles Mingus. For various reasons I don’t think jazz composers get their due—if we’d unearthed three new Beethoven symphonies it’d certainly be a big deal!

“They’re major works for a large ensemble and truly amazing in their scope.”

road in Glen Echo; Blue Sky Puppet Theatre in Prince George’s County and Nana Projects in nearby Baltimore were invited to be part of the festival. And they grow across disciplines, with the puppet concept popping up in the summer camp syllabus, in the Music Center, and in the Mansion’s art galleries and gift shop.

Hand puppets, string puppets, rod puppets, shadow puppets: moveable models of every size, shape and description will descend upon the Strathmore campus this June, July and August in the name of art, music, theater and family entertainment. Welcome to the summer of Puppets Take Strathmore—an exploration of the elements that make up an art form, a theme-driven festival that takes in every arm of the arts with workshops, collaborations, premieres and performances. There’s even a fine art exhibit that traces the evolution of puppetry as a craft and elevates its forms and figures to museum pieces.

“Puppetry tends to be seen in the U.S. as a kid thing,” notes Campbell. “Most other countries around the world have a different view; in other societies puppets are understood to have deep cultural, artistic and even religious significance.” So while Puppets Take Strathmore will offer plenty of picks for kids to enjoy, there will be some events—like the Puppet Slam in the Mansion August 2—that were designed with adults in mind. And even more that children and adults of every age can enjoy together.

Pickett’s Charge in Puppet Slam

“We want to celebrate the role of puppetry in the visual and performing arts,” says Lauren Campbell, development and education manager at Strathmore. “And the way Puppets Take Strathmore came together is a neat story about how ideas grow here.”

The ancient art of shadow puppetry gets the 21st century treatment when Nana Projects launches its cool hands-on Shadow Puppetry session, using simple paper cutouts and overhead projectors to cast shadows onto a screen. It’s amazing how easy it is to create characters and stories, and bring them to life through the magic of light and shadow. And don’t miss the fun when Blair Thomas & Company offers its own take on puppet creation in a special workshop that teaches how to transform paper, markers, rods and imagination into a bona fide puppet show.

So many art forms come together at the Artists and Educators Panel Discussion on Puppetry in Contemporary American Theater—it’s a perfect fit for fine artists, theater lovers— anyone who enjoys a great story well told and wants to learn more. Hard Headed Heart is an intriguing something-old-something-new creation by Chicago-based puppet artist Blair Thomas, featuring a trio of vignettes based on the works of Federico García Lorca, Wallace Stevens, and the blues classic “St. James Infirmary.” This was big in Chicago—a sellout, in fact—so why not be among the first to check it out in the D.C. area? “It has the elements of being both imaginary and real,” says Strathmore Fine Art curator Harriet Lesser, “It’s fine art and craftsmanship—another format, another point of view. And we’re excited about showing the beauty of this art form and its evolution.” No Strings Attached examines the role of fine arts in the creation of puppets and marionettes, from the carefully carved beauties of the Renaissance to the work of today’s puppet artists like marionette maker Don Becker, performing arts photographer

“Despite their use in theater these puppets are artwork; they stand alone,” says Lesser. “They don’t have to be in the realm of the puppet show, they can be appreciated on their own and for the influence they have on contemporary visual art.”

Jayme Stone: The Alan Lomax Project

FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 13, 8PM

THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 20, 7:30 & 9:30PM

She’s perhaps best known for The Joy Luck Club— and The Kitchen God’s Wife, and The Bonesetter’s Daughter—but New York Times bestselling author Amy Tan has Amy Tan many more stories to tell: about life, love, families and fame. Born to a Chinese immigrant family in California, Tan decided at an early age to escape from her “ordinary life” into the magic of the written word.

One of the most important figures in folk music, Alan Lomax was a scholar, a cataloguer, a folklorist. He captured the magic of Jelly Roll Morton, Muddy Waters, Woody Guthrie and Lead Belly on tape; his pioneering work inspired musicians from Aaron Copland to Bob Dylan, and set the stage for modern American music.

From her arrival on the literary scene in 1989 to today (her latest work, The Valley of Amazement, comes out November 2013) Tan has won admirers around the globe with her rich prose, compelling plots and keen observations. As a speaker she’s funny, insightful and brimming with stories— about writing and traveling, fame and culture, music, mothers and daughters, childhood and pets. Don’t miss this amazing evening with Amy Tan, and be sure to bring a question for the Q&A segement!

“Alan was one of those who unlocked the secrets of this kind of music.”

“This repertoire is (what) Alan Lomax recorded; all the music is coming from his archive,” says Stone, referring the collection of 17,000 tape recordings kept at the Library of Congress’ American Folklife Center. “And we’ll definitely be weaving in stories from his life—and stories about the songs so they come alive.”

After an unconventional childhood and a somewhat convoluted path to bestselling-author-dom, Tan started using her own experiences and her mother’s memories of life and family back in China to create literary magic. For nearly a quarter of a century, Tan has made an indelible mark on contemporary literature with novels—and the movies and even operas they’ve begotten—that shine a light on universal truths.

“He was the first ethnomusicologist, traveling around the world, recording music that had never been recorded before,” says composer and banjo innovator Jayme Stone. “He was kind of a maverick.”
