CLASSICAL MUSIC, Adventurous concerto combines classical and contemporary. By Michelle Davis
In the heart of Georgia, about 85 miles southeast of Atlanta, lies the soulful city of Macon. Rich with history and musical heritage, Macon has spawned such legendary artists as Otis Redding, Little Richard, and The Allman Brothers. It is in this creative hotbed that two musical families, the Mills and the McDuffies, formed a lifelong bond. The Mills family wanted to ensure a musical education for their son. “My parents chose the church that we went to in Macon based on the music program,” says songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Mike Mills. “Bobby [McDuffie’s] mother was the music director.” As adolescents, Mills and McDuffie became fast friends performing together in the hand bell and junior choirs at church. After services, the Mills family would head to the McDuffie house to socialize. After high school, Mills and McDuffie parted ways—Mills off to college in Athens, Georgia, where he would form world-renowned rock group R.E.M. with Michael Stipe, Bill Berry, and Peter Buck. McDuffie was off to Juilliard and on to become a Grammy-nominated violin virtuoso.
living American composers.” Confirms Mills, “[we] became big fans of each other’s musical careers.” From the Royal Festival Hall in London to the National Concert Hall in Taipei, McDuffie has appeared as a soloist with most of the major orchestras of the world. But rehashing the classics gets tiresome. He yearns for creative challenge; he wants to grow as an artist. “Just selfishly,” admits McDuffie, “I’ve always wanted to reach out to living American composers instead of playing the same pieces over and over again by dead white European males.” That desire inspired McDuffie to commission Philip Glass to compose an American version of Vivaldi’s Four Seasons. With that genrebending experience under his belt, McDuffie set his sights on collaborating with his old friend.
It is a hybrid of classical and rock ’n’ roll. I want it to have the good parts of both and hopefully the bad parts of neither.
While miles and musical genres separated the two friends, their mutual admiration only strengthened with time. “I’ve always been really proud of him,” gushes McDuffie. “I consider Mike Mills one of the greatest
—Mike Mills
In 2014, he pitched his idea to Mills over dinner. “I . . . threw out this crazy idea about writing a concerto for violin, rock band, and orchestra.” Adds McDuffie, laughing, “I was just scared because I didn’t know what his reaction would be!”
At the time of the proposal, Mills was at a crossroads in his career. After 31 years, R.E.M. had amicably parted ways, and Mills had to decide whether he wanted to retire or continue making music. But there’s really no turning the music off when you’re as prolific an artist as Mills. In fact, Mills already had a melody in his head that he thought would be perfect for the project, and the drive to collaborate with his dear friend was too good to pass up. And so, Mills got to work composing his first concerto. “It’s a very intimidating thing because some of the crowd will be classical fans, I assume, and they have some pretty exacting standards,” says Mills. And on the flip side, Mills acknowledges that rock and pop fans may feel intimidated by classical music.
6
STRATHMORENEWS | Summer 2016 | www.strathmore.org
UNSTUFFED “People are scared of classical music because they are afraid they won’t understand it and others around them will,” he muses. “You never want to be the person who starts clapping before the piece is over. The concept of movements with only silence between them is intimidating because when you go to a [rock] show, you play a song, you clap, you yell, you get a drink, and then you play another song. I’m hoping to break that down.” This performance will be different. There will be guitar changes between movements, which, although cohesive, will be distinct and distinguishable. Mills hopes for some vocal interplay between himself, McDuffie, and the audience during guitar changes. The sound will be powerful and robust, but the atmosphere will be welcoming and casual. “It’s not going to be stuffy,” Mills stresses. “It should be more fun than a classical concert . . . because this is not a classical piece. It is a hybrid of classical and rock ’n’ roll. I want it to have the good parts of both and hopefully the bad parts of neither.” In large part, the key to finding the sweet spot between rock accessibility and classical virtuosity rests in the hands of arranger David Mallamud. “The arranger is a crucial component here,” says McDuffie. “It’s 100 percent Mike’s concerto, but the arranger is steeped in classical training and that’s what’s going to make the concerto successful.” Mills explains that he presents his compositions to Mallamud who then takes those melodies and arranges the parts for the string section, fleshing out the music into something more suited for McDuffie’s virtuosity. Footage from an early rehearsal of the concerto reveals an exhilarating performance underscored by rich piano textures, McDuffie’s fiery bowing, and propulsive rock rhythms. One adventurous movement makes way into a more romantic progression, with both Mills and McDuffie’s undeniable gifts taking the spotlight.
CONCERTO FOR VIOLIN, ROCK BAND, AND STRING ORCHESTRA WRITTEN BY R.E.M.’S MIKE MILLS FOR ROBERT McDUFFIE FEATURING WORDLESS MUSIC ORCHESTRA
Thu, Nov 3, 8pm MUSIC CENTER TICKETS $35–$65 (STARS $31.50–$58.50)
Mills and McDuffie at first orchestra read-through for the concerto
Although as of this writing the concerto is not quite complete, McDuffie has been floored by what he’s heard so far. “You certainly have the R.E.M. DNA in there,” he says of the concerto, which will include the Millspenned R.E.M. tune “Nightswimming” as one of its movements. “His intimate writing is really personal and achingly beautiful. I mean, what he has presented is a waltz that is just stunning . . . really inspired.” While it’s become popular for orchestras to back rock bands, in those arrangements the classical musicians take a more deferential role—not so here. “We are in the trenches together,” says McDuffie, “Nobody is backing anyone up.” Adds Mills, “I don’t think anyone has done anything like this before.” What’s so special about this performance is that the concerto’s success is derived equally from the artists’ ingenuity and their bond as friends. “It’s just an honest and sincere project, on both of our parts,” says McDuffie. “We admire each other and also each other’s worlds, and I think that’ll come through.”
“Melodies are paramount here,” says Mills, and it shows. 301.581.5100 | Summer 2016 | STRATHMORENEWS
